Adding the drums and bass for track 3 - 12/03/2019

In order to fit the minimal style instrumental, I decided to keep the drums fairly loose with not too much going on. Despite this, I still took my time on the grid positioning, sample selecting and mixing of the drums on a whole. To begin, I started to think about what snare to use. Hansen, (2017) states that a snare can be anything providing you hit it with a stick. Taking this into consideration, an alternative snare was what I was searching for. Instead of a typical snare sound I decided to use a click sound effect that I found in a sample pack deep in my macbook. The sound resonated with me and it sounded great when flicking through and hearing it over the stabs. 

For the hi hat type sound I decided to use a shaker however, instead of inserting them onto the quantise grids, I reversed them and they naturally came away from the grid, creating a swingy, slightly lazy feel. This is a very popular technique used in Hip Hop and creates a humanised groove, making the beat almost easier to listen to (Houghton, 2017).

The kicks were also very minimal in terms of how frequently they hit. In order to beef the kick up a bit, an 808 bass sample was added over the kick. This was used as the main bass line and once in tune, sounded perfect for the track. The drums did not need to be very full up as I wanted the vocals to be the main dynamic filler of the track. Each of the drum elements were equalised, compressed and saturated until crisp.
