Description:

One day, a birthday gift from my dead sister arrived. THOUGHTS & WHY READ THIS:

- plot = 10/5 

- art = 5/5

- i started reading this yesterday cause i was bored and now i’m done & all i can is holy macaroni it’s so beautiful and it blew my mind

- the story is well connected and i couldnt believe the plot twists 

- all the characters are hands down! 

- a roller coaster ride of emotions!! made me laugh so hard and made me cry cause omg

- seriously this deserves many readers

- arguably one of the best this 2020 (even if it was finish/released yrs ago)

- pls dont make the same mistake as i did and read it now!

- so many factors that makes the story worthwhile

- same author as ‘lee doona/girl from downstairs’ & ‘shackles - story of brother and sister’ i am now convinced that sunbaenim is a genius in this field

- mystery, thriller and suspense all in one

- comedic gold

- a gem basically

- and holy macaroni i swear they are doing this guy dirty cause he’s a softie

- he’s so soft towards his sister

- his sister is kinda suspicious and idk im smelling something else

- keeps me on my toes and makes me hug my teddy cause i’m kinda scared on what’s to come and at the same time i am so thrilled

oKAY assuming that super junior does a quarantine concert or something like that (pleaSE! PLEASE! *cue leeteuk’s “please, siwon-choi” in the distance*) THEN. i would really like the following songs. tbh they’re kinda all over the place and not isolated to a single album so. i guess these songs could be a 15th anniversary special line up as well?? i don’t know but here we go 

note that this ‘playlist’ of songs has to have heechul AND sungmin in it, at the very least. ideally, i would like all 15 members back, but i get that it might be a little difficult. and these songs don’t even have to be sung live, i would be happy with a simple stream of pre-recorded videos <3 a girl can dream, okay!

homestay

automaticity shakes him awake before his mind does; the side-effects of a rigid sleeping schedule beaten into his body for two years. but he’s home now. he’s finally home. there’s no more drills and rules to adhere.

so he pulls himself awake, laughs at the greeting barks of his baby and runs his hands through the curly fur that matches his bedhead.

two years is plenty of time to dictate change anywhere else. but he appreciates the constants that remain on this small island. like the pan that still fits perfectly in the grasp of his hand, catching the twirling omelette with every flick of his wrist. like the neighbours that still greets him as if they’ve only last seen each other last week, easily catching up on stories they’ve missed.  

although this, in itself, is the classic song and dance he’s loved all these years. he’s still seeking a new number to hum along to, a new melody singing to his ears.

so he pauses the playlist and this morning jog, wipe the sweat from his brows as he inhales the wind into his lungs, letting his eyes wander as he catches his breath.

the hiring notice on the community board stares back at him.

it’s not the first time he’s taken something like this as a sign. so he takes a closer look. repeats the digits that he copies onto his phone under his breath. and he’s calling before the second thoughts come.

( somehow it already feels right. feels like he’s picking the pieces of a puzzle he’s long forgotten about. )

he’s born in the midst of the rainy season, in the middle of the hour of the ox, when the moon has yet to descend from the sky. he fills the room with his cries and they hear him loud and clear, even through the downpour raging on outside.

it’s no surprise to anyone, because sturdy are his roots, built by his mother and moulded by his father. they can already tell; he’s going to be a strong child.

his foundation started with his mother. she is a ‘해녀’ and so was her mother and her grandmother and her grandmother’s mother. it’s only natural after all. she’s descended from generations after generations of the proud female divers that helped built jeju into what it became today. therefore, so is he. although he can’t inherit the tradition himself, she waters him with unconditional love and utmost diligence. so he grows with respect and appreciation for her strength and all whom are like her.

his aspirations, however, stemmed from his father. an unassuming man who hailed from the mainland. who filled his settled days with stories of people and places far far away, further than his children can fathom. they listen as he dances through the routines of a homemaker; he makes a ritual out of rousing the void of wanderlust he has already satisfied while they have yet to fulfill. all before dinner time, while they’re circled around the table, swimming in side-dishes that carry the scent of the sea, waiting for their mother to come home.

just like the moon and the sun, their influence will forever hang over him, on all his nights and days.

sometimes he is like his mother, skirting by the seaside as the sun meets the horizon, while the sky mirrors the same shade of orange as the floats that littered the waves, hoisting the nets with her catches on his back, proudly flaunting the day’s haul to their neighbours.

sometimes he is like his father, making adventures out of the mundane, roaming their neighbourhood like an unexplored land as the wind whistles their secrets to his ears, forging friendships with passersby and faces he recognises all the same.  

sometimes he is neither.

sometimes he is both.

sometimes he dreams of being a mermaid instead, strong and free, diving under the seabed, following wherever the currents flow, discovering new places, wondering what he’ll see tomorrow.

reality is rarely ever fair, neither to a good man nor to his children who doesn’t know any better — except the oldest child, who is still many candles away from adulthood, but sickness isn’t the sympathetic sort.

the doctor prescribes them with hope, if nothing else. it’s no promise, but it’s enough to keep him going, put on a mask for his younger siblings, they don’t have to know. his mother is thankful. so he keeps reassuring her, picking up the shattered pieces of their peaceful lives, pretending like it’s not too heavy for his much smaller hands.

two years later, he’s wearing a black suit, not like the one his mother dons when she goes out to the sea, no. that suit is a symbol. a representation of his pride and admiration for her.

the suit he’s wearing now is different, ill-fitting around his frame, too big for his shoulders to fill, the sleeves loose around his arms, the tie knotted around his neck all wrong.

he stares at the mirror. loop. unloop. tug. loosen. pull. it’s just. not. right.

ah, 아방 would know—

he swallows. fingers tighten around the fabric. reminders are harsh and sudden. one day he will remember that.

fortunately, humans are good at adapting. eventually, he learnt how to drag himself out of bed every morning, how to tie the brightly-printed apron behind his back as oil heats on pan, how to roll sheets of egg neatly onto plates, how to dice up vegetables evenly, how to discern the right amount of salt that sprinkles from his fingertips.

unfortunately, he’s not perfect — it’s impossible to replicate the taste and flair of another’s cooking, especially when he’s only got his memories as the recipe. they can see that he’s trying, so they shower him in compliments and hums contently with spoonfuls in their mouths.

he can tell it’s not the same. this isn’t a void he can fill no matter how hard he tries. but that’s ok. they’re finally moving on with their hollowed hearts. that itself is enough for now.

sometimes he sits by the pier, watching the travellers that comes and go, wondering what stories they have left untold.

on the quieter days, he stares at the sea, thinking about his friends, long departed for the mainland, starting the next chapter of their lives in big cities while he’s still here, waiting as time passes by, feet buried in the sand.

he doesn’t regret it, residing where he is needed, choosing hearth over what he could’ve seen beyond the ocean.

but sometimes, he still likes to dream.

they’re in the midst of the rainy season, during the wee hours of the morning, when the sun has just risen into the sky. he’s hugging his little sister tight, trying to hold back the sniffles and welling tears in his eyes.

it’s not the first time he had to send his sibling off, so she chides him for getting all sappy even though he promised he wouldn’t.

“it’s only 서울, 오라방. i’m not going to the other side of the world.”

it doesn’t matter, because he’ll miss her all the same. but he doesn’t need to tell her that because she already knows, and she leaves with promises to call and how she’ll return home promptly for 추석.

his relevation only comes now that their roof of four is reduced to two — how the past seven years of his life has completely revolved around his younger siblings — and in their absence, he grows listless, idling most of his days away, lingering in a house that suddenly feels too big for his comfort. so he escapes the confines of his mind by branching out, switches his jogging route every few days, drives around the curves of asphalt and dirt he’s all but memorised.

and it worked. for a short time it did. he fooled himself into believing a change of pace to his daily life was enough. it’s certainly a lot easier than admitting that he’s lost in the cycle of time, suspended in the limbo of a man who no longer has a purpose to work with.

perhaps it’s fortunate that he’s always been an open book. because it’s not long before mother’s reading him right in the open. dreams and aspirations — she reminds him of them. of how he used to want to see a bigger world beyond this tiny island. and she is right. but he doesn’t know where to start. and the longer he stayed here, the harder it became to uproot himself.

until the letter that dictates his future arrives one afternoon. he takes it as a sign and rips the bandaid off in one go, enjoying one more meal with his mother as she pats his shaved head, and departs on the first plane that leaves next morning.
