Safe and sound. She feels something wedged between her molars — seaweed, maybe, and the bitter tang of unease. A faze that washes over her tongue as she prongs it out from its enamelized prison. She’s safe and sound, sprawled over linen, and somehow the churning behind her ribcage doesn’t simmer away.

She’d been instructed to send a message, actually. It’d been a command. The first time is an accident, but she begins to wonder if she’s breaking some unspoken, unagreed upon rule when she airs Harry Realtor’s Good morning text the next day, sidling out of bed to haphazardly attempt taming her mane of sleep-mussed hair for the workday.

She thinks, it must stipple more into a morally ambiguous territory, rather than a simple sex-rule-disappointment thing, when she notices his Everything okay? message a few hours post her lunch break… and opts to silence his notifications entirely.

She doesn’t know what she’s running from. Seeing his texts surge through the aether and light her LED alive makes a raw panic curdle her bloodstream, but she’s known for weeks that the leather and chains — an alter ego she’d become well accustomed to — was entwined with the seemingly sweet real estate agent, masquerading.

Metathesiophobia. That’s what it’s called on the internet. A long word for a throbbing affliction. Harry doesn’t text again. Dissecting the root of the discomfort feels like discomfort in and of itself.

I'm uncomfortable calling the ghouls 'characters' because for me they fall in a third category after 'characters' and 'real people' : alter egos.

Characters are not determined by who plays them. They can change interpreters ad infinitum, like Doctor Who for example. Before their physical characteristics, they're stories.

The ghouls aren't characters because they weren't written. Tobias didn't give a story to each musician in the band. They came in, crafted a personality for who they were onstage, and made that personality grow through a mix of stage choreography and improvisation.

If they leave the band, the next musician to replace them doesn't perform under the previous member's name. And that's because they're not characters. They're irreplaceable. They're literally defined by who's under the mask. There's only one Aether and when someone took his place after he left, they got their own name based on their little quirks and the era they started in.

That's why it's so weird for me to excuse changing their physical characteristics by saying "they're just characters, Swiss is not Jutty, he doesn't have to be brown". We've all seen Jutty's last performance with Drag Talk and we all commented on him dancing exactly like Swiss - that's because Swiss IS Jutty, just with a fictional layer on him that allows everyone to divide them into two different persons.

Swiss is Jutty's alter ego for Ghost, he very much shares his features with his creator. And when it comes to Aether, it's normal that everyone was so weirded out when figurines were made based on him, with Chris' jewels being very present on them. Because 'ghouls' are a Ghost creation, but the little details that made Aether Aether belonged to Chris and Chris wasn't in the band anymore. Fans found the figurine inappropriate for a very legitimate reason.

Of course you can headcanon a ghoul as queer or older/younger because those are invisible details hidden under their helmets and therefore they fall in the "fictional realm". But if people are mad because you drew Cumulus skinny when she doesn't present like that onstage, or Swiss white when you can clearly see that he isn't, well, they're probably right to be pissed at the misrepresentation. It's a bit disrespectful towards the people under the masks too.

I think people get a bit lost on that topic because Copia is more of a character than he is an alter ego and they think the same goes for the ghouls. But there's clearly a difference between them for me.

Some personal Genshin idol au headcanons:

Scara and Heizou were the secret members of 4NEMO. During their rookie days, only Aether, Venti, Xiao and Kazuha would show up in music videos, lives and interviews. All of their songs would have Heizou and Scara's voice and fans would go crazy about who they actually are (and would go even more crazy when they're finally revealed)

Raiden Mikoto (the Shogun), Fischl, Beidou and Keqing are in the same group called Electra. Lisa is their manager. Their concept is mostly dark and royalty theme which is not so kid-friendly because their songs always mention death or blood. Tho they do have some love songs and by they i mean only Keqing.

Albedo is a solo artist. He's usually active in social media and would occasionally release some songs.

I like to think that scaramouche and wanderer are kuni's Alter-ego type of thing (like August-d and suga).

DCKZ. The most popular member is Childe since he would release lots of solo songs or duet songs with one of the other members. Guizhong is alive and she's their manager. People would usually make rumours about her and Zhongli dating. Diluc and Kaeye's relationship is a little better than their relationship in the game.

6reeze and dckz are rivals but they would usually go to eachother concerts in disguise.

Lisa, Jean and Guizhong are the most well-known managers. Guizhong is just like Kaeya and Childe so it's much more likely for Diluc and Zhongli to properly manage the group. Jean is literally the mom of 6reeze. Lisa is probably the best manager for Electra cuz she's the only one who can manage their personalities without getting scared.

TVT Dream ( Razor, Chongyun, Bennett and Xingqiu) are the rookies and also the youngest idols in Teyvat Ent.

Lumine is a well known make up artist

The Kamisato siblings are the two duo singers. They're more active in the modeling field.

Barbara, Xinyan and Yunjin are all solo artists but they're usually seen together for fan signings, interviews, vlogs etc.

Both Yiuno and his twin sister, Yiuna, are naturally gifted in aether manipulation—so much so that even the likes of his former mentor, Shatotto, and later on his partner, Y’shtola, are able to discern in one glance. RECONNAISSANCE. “Knowledge is power,” is a quote often used by scholars, usually associated with books. However, to Yiuno, the same can be applied to field work, especially the kind of jobs he’d take on. Terrain of the site he’d be scavenging as a gleaner. Profile of the target he’d be killing as an assassin. Always preparing himself for the worst.

Shortly after their birth, kits (young Viera children) were placed under custody care in a specialized facility within the civilization; raised collectively by adult Viera designated to be their caretakers, none of the members knew who their birth parents were. They didn’t care, either—the concept of blood relation never once crossed their mind, for they were taught since young that everyone in the clan is family. The only exception to this is Yiuna, his twin sister. Their birth was met with scrutiny, for no twins were born in the clan for centuries until they came. They share a special bond that they can’t explain, but they know and they can feel it between them. They were banished from the clan due to Yiuna’s deceit—she disguised her brother’s true gender and made him to pretend to be a female so that the wood wardens wouldn’t take him away from her when they hit puberty. After the Seventh Umbral Calamity, Yiuno woke up in the middle of the Black Shroud with an amnesiac Xaela, Sora Amariyo; Yiuna was nowhere to be found. He became a mentor and guardian both to the young Warrior of Darkness, and they began their journey through the realm. As of DT, Yiuno is still searching for Yiuna, trying to reunite with his missing twin sister.

PETS.

Yiuno owns a collection of minions—automated mechanical dolls that he uses as either unsuspecting scouts or diversion puppets in his line of work. He can also summon familiars, in the form of black-feathered owls, to do his bidding.

SMOKES? Never. He despises the smell. ALCOHOL? Drinks socially to maintain some cover stories; this is especially so when he assumes the identity of the mysterious courtesan, Yiune. While he’s unable to get drunk due to his unique body condition, he does enjoy a wine or two on special occasions. DRUGS? Similar to alcohol, drugs have no effects on him due to his special circumstances. However, he has no qualms to use them on others. MOUNT? Yiuno rescued a chocobo sometime during the ARR timeline—the chocobo was apparently abandoned by its original owner because it was an albino. To avoid any issues with the law enforcement, Yiuno registered this chocobo as his mount with the Grand Companies, naming it “Sören”. CRIMINAL RECORDS? Too many to count, given his immorality; some were major historical incidents, such as the War of the Magi. Though Shatotto erased his name from history and bore the weight of his crimes onto herself, Yiuno would never forget the sins he’d committed, even till this day.

Actually, they're not a hero nor a villain. They are a doctor. They just randomly appear near you when you're hurt in an alley and they'll patch you up no matter who you are (except if you're on his "No healing" list).

They normally only go by "It" when they're posing as Doctor Sanctus since they are intending to look like a neverborn.

They have small fangs.

Aether can see ghosts since they are, essentially, a supernatural being. Which leads me to:

Aether learned their medical skills from ghost doctors. A lot of them wanted to just pass their knowledge to someone and Aether was the only near person who could learn.

Their long-term teacher was a ghost of a surgeon man who died in an attack (for being gay and being Jewish in the past) near a Jewish Church after trying to defend his friend.

Apparently I have a type when it comes to enemies to lovers trope. For me if the ship isn’t too toxic then I would be into it.

1.Dasey-Canadian tv show about 2 step siblings who couldn’t stand each other but have sweet moments and show that they become closer as series progress. They were literally enemies (not really but Derek likes to prank her and she would get annoyed and try to get back to him to piss him off) to friends to lovers trope. They have such a strong chemistry and we all wanted them together growing up. Truman was literally Derek 2.0 but toxic. The fandom is still growing strong to the point we have a spin off movie and hoping it becomes a TV series because there’s so many unanswered questions. Like Casey is obviously sick of her husband and seemed burnt out AF plus I want to see him be uncomfortable and a third wheel in front of Dasey since everytime they have a love interest they automatically become a third wheel aside from Sally (she was an amazing love interest) plus I just want Dasey to act more like a married couple.

2.Zutara-Zuko and Katara were enemies to friends. I was really hoping for them to be lovers by the end of the series and was so disappointed. They have so many things in common with parallels that they would be each other ying Yang. They both lost their mothers, both are stubborn when they get mad, he rises with the sun, she rises with the moon, water and fire are polar opposites. He was the blue spirit and she was the painted lady alter egos. She was the first one to trust him and he betrayed that but also tried really hard to make up for it. He was the only one who gave her closure to find her mother’s killer and let her decide on what she wants to do and they became good friends from that mission. The Ember Island play showing us that Zuko and Katara were into each other but also making fun of Zutara. June always calling Katara Zuko’s gf whenever she makes an appearance. Then the battle between Zuko vs Azula and how he saved Katara from lightning and almost died in the process, that was a powerful scene I have ever seen in a child’s cartoon. Plus if they were a couple Katara would make an amazing fire lady since she already has the skills from travelling with the Avatar and solving problems whenever they travel, Zuko would see her as an equal plus it would show that the fire nation is serious about ending the war by marrying a waterbender and show a balance to the rest of the world. Plus if they were parents they wouldn’t Favorite one or the other and treat their kids as equals since Zuko knows how to fight without his fire bending and could teach his son/daughter and Katara has Sokka. I’m still bitter on how it ended and even to this day Zutara is a pretty popular ship.

3.Chilumi-Ever since Childe came over and said “Hey Girlie hold still” comment or even the Japanese dub. Many people ship them as a couple since they are enemies but he’s so kind towards her and even after their fight he is still kind. It gives off enemies to lovers and if it was an anime where Lumine is the main character and Aether wasn’t a main character, then the writers would 100% make Chilumi a thing and probably just kill him off by saving her. It’s one of the most popular ships in Genshin.

4.Catwoman and Batman-Enemies to lovers but Catwoman is more of an antihero, yes she is a criminal but if it’s to save Batman from another enemy or he needs her help, she would do it since she loves him plus they can hook up afterwards. They even get married afterwards in the comics.

5.Martin and Diana from Martin Mysterh. Not really enemies but they also like to fight alot but then have their nice moments. In the cartoons they are opposites and would argue but when it comes to saving one or the other they would in a heartbeat and have sweet moments plus in the comics they are literally a married couple and never were step siblings…

6. Flash and Killer frost. In comics they were enemies but in TV series Killer Frost is Caitlin Snow. During the TV series they have a really amazing friendship and have many things in common and I thought the writers would pair them together since that’s what it feels like during S1 and how so many villains would kidnap her and he had to save her. Even in another dimension when he was fighting Killer Frost he told her he doesn’t want to hurt her. When Caitlin frost became killer frost again he didn’t want to hurt her and she worked with Evil Barry (Savitar) now Killer frost and the flash work together when it comes to fighting. I really dislike WA because WA was the toxic ship I have ever seen and the fandom were so toxic and I stopped watching The flash.

7.Maou and Emi from The devil is a part timer. They were enemies since he’s a devil and she’s a hero. She defeated the demon king Satan but wanted to make sure he was defeated so she followed him to the human world. During the human world Maou would show Emi kindness while she was hostile towards him. In one scene he saved her by treating to her wounds. They became frenemies, he apologized but she still doesn’t 100% forgive him from his past but is willing to understand and become a friend to him. They even became parents which made them closer into having a family bond.

8.Nick and Adalind from Grimm. They were enemies and became lovers because she got pregnant while pretending to be his ex gf. They gotten closer and Nick was willing to protect her to make sure their baby is safe and they became a couple in the end.

9.Caroline and Tyler. Not really enemies but since Caroline is a vampire and Tyler is a werewolf…it makes sense that they would not like each other plus before they became occults. Tyler thought she was selfish and spoiled, Caroline thought he was hot headed and temperamental. They became a couple later on in the series and broke up…I stopped watching Vampire Diaries when she got with Klaus and Elena got with Damon.

10. Aerrow and Cyclonis-Stormhawks was a Canadian cartoon and I loved it as a kid. Whenever I seen Aerrow and Cyclonis fighting I was just thinking dang I wish they were an enemies to lovers couple. Idk why I thought that but apparently some people agreed with me since there’s fanfiction.

14 associations — yiuno.

ELEMENT. Ice and Fire. In Thaumaturgy, balancing duality—of life and death—forms the basic foundation in this school of magic. While the two elements are of opposing nature, in the hands of an accomplished spell-caster, they can be turned into terrifying forces of destruction. Being the last direct disciple of the great Mhachi sorceress Shatotto, Yiuno is not a mage to be trifled with. Though he often hides his potent magical talent and sticks to his trusty blades to get his work done, those who are highly sensitive to aether may suffer sickness just by being around him for too long.

ASTROLOGICAL SIGN. The Spear. In Astromancy, this constellation is the sixth gate of the Lesser Heavens, often associated with the element of Ice. This is the reverse of the Elemental Wheel, where Ice is the first order in the cycle of Creation. It is said that “the Fury (Halone) resides in a palace of ice carved by Her own spear—ice formed of moonbeams collected by the Lover, Menphina.” As the final gate to open before the seventh, whereby attuning to the latter is equivalent to a dying wish, it is the last stand where one will be filled with the power to overcome their enemies, and gain the compassion necessary to show mercy to their foes.

GEMSTONE. Alexandrite is an interesting gemstone known for its color-changing properties under different types of polarized light, which reflects the many faces that Yiuno wears under different circumstances. To the public’s eye, an average adventurer and humble alchemist wandering from place to place. To those more acquainted with the arcane arts, a treasure hunter of ancient and dangerous artifacts. In the underworld, a ruthless assassin who pretends to be a beautiful ‘courtesan’ and seduces his targets into Death’s embrace.

NUMBER. Three. Yiuno has a twin sister, Yiuna; his alter ego, Yiune, is a feminine disguise he employs for his assassination jobs (long story short, it later becomes an actual form he can shapeshift into). However, back in the Amaurotine era, these three were originally a family of triplets.

COLOR. Monochrome—specifically black and white—is both a fitting and an ironic theme to Yiuno. On one hand, he embodies duality given his two-faced nature, and also the contrast between his public image and secret identity. On the other hand, he mainly thrives in the gray area—a Chaotic Neutral at heart.

FLORA. Antirrhinum, more commonly known as Snapdragon or Dragon Flower, is one of those flowers with double meanings. On one hand, it symbolizes grace, strength and protection, which are some of the positive traits that Yiuno possesses. On the other hand, it also represents indifference and deception, bringing out the darker, negative side of Yiuno.

FAUNA. Strix. According to in-game description: “A guardian bound to the Rare Tomes Room on the highest floor of the Great Gubal Library. Similar to skatenes, Strix is an owl which has been enchanted with heightened intelligence. Strix’s comparatively vast intellect, however, grants the creature command over spells of formidable potency.”

SEASON. Autumn and Winter. Autumn, of falling leaves and a fiery but sorrowful palette, a season where time starts to slow down as daytime becomes shorter. Winter, of falling snow that paints the landscape white, a season where time comes to a standstill and dangers lurk in the shadows of the long, long night.

TIME OF THE DAY. Dawn and Dusk. Less about the exact time of the day, but more about the changes in time that happen at that very moment—representing the shift Yiuno would experience in his life. Be it his gender identities, or the blurred lines between a blessing and curse to his immortality… It’s like the two sides of the same coin: the difference is all but a matter of perspectives. The real test is how he acts upon those perspectives.

PLACE. Though there are a few locations that may appear to be synonymous with how others would perceive Yiuno, such as libraries and graveyards, I’d say the most accurate association would be the labyrinth. Filled with many twists and turns at every corner, much like Yiuno’s long and complicated life—or, his dark and troubled mind.

SMELL. It’s really hard to pin down a specific aroma for Yiuno, partly because masking his true scent is something he pays attention to as a master of disguise. To some, he’d give off the fragrance of a finely aged red wine, brimming with wisdom and dry humor; to others, he’d probably smell like walking death, counting down to their impeding doom under his bloodied blades.

FOOD. Royal Eggs. However, given his wandering lifestyle and the need to stay undercover most of the time, he doesn’t have the luxury to eat this all the time. He has since come to view this as a self-reward on rare occasions he gets the chance to enjoy a royal meal in a quiet inn room.

BEVERAGE. Espresso con Panna, with double shot. Yiuno is a huge caffeine addict, and this is the only in-universe drink that can sate his obsession with coffee.

SONG. “Nageki no Oto” (EN. Song of Lamentation), by KOKIA. A song about war and loss, which is very fitting given Yiuno’s darkly colorful past.

FFXIV Writes 2023 | Day 17 | Writer's Choice: Visitation

Viviane is visited by the spirit of her Aunt and Former mentor Doshaine.

“If you knew my story you’d have a hard time. Believing me, you’d think I was lying. Joy and sorrow never last. I’ll die trying not to live in the past.”

The voice must have carried malms as loud as Viviane sang the words. She had risen early, spent the morning baking, and tried to keep out of her mind the show she had that night. Sometimes it was easy to slip into the persona of Mysteri, her performing alter ego and sometimes she could feel her knees quake as she cast the glamour that changed only parts of her now. There was a time when she didn’t go on stage unless her entire body was changed to someone else.

“I left my clothes on that cold river rock. My cares and my woes rolled up in my socks. I lay down in that mountain stream. And the icy water rushed over me”

“I know your story had a front-row seat to it.” Vi nearly dropped the tray of cookies she had just pulled from the brand-new oven in her bakery, the voice making her lower lip quiver.

“Oh no you don’t, you stop those tears right there. Takes a Hells of a lot to cross the barrier from the spirit world to here, if you start crying then I will cry and before I know it I’ll have to go back.” Around she spun then, but like all the other times she had heard a spirit speak in her days, this one as special as it was, was nowhere her eyes could see. She could smell the perfume, and hear the cane against the brand-new wooden floors but that was all.

“But I cannot see you.” She blurted out, the tears trying to creep from her eyes and flood her face but she knew the whisper was right she had to hold it together for both of their cases.

“Not your gift to have now is it Vi?” a warm chuckle followed and she felt a breeze blow across her face. “Just enjoy the gifts you do have, at least allow us a bit of time to talk.”

“Of all the days you pick.” Vi found herself sniffling, it was the perfect day really. She had been a nervous wreck since the sun came up, hence the hours of baking.”Ah Doshaine, I cannot tell you how good it is to hear your voice.”

“Surprised you aren’t boarding up the door and windows to make sure no one comes in here and catches you talking to yourself. Have things really changed that much around here?” The disturbance of the aether caused her to turn her head, her eyes scanning the area right in front of her, if she was lucky enough she could catch a glimmer of a shape or an outline of where the disturbance was but today there was nothing besides the lingering sensation of being watched.

“I am not overly worried. I have come to a place where I realize that most of the people with any attachment to Gridania or the Inner Parts of the Shroud will just find it normal. Those who are traveling might as well learn it before they have it happen to them directly.” Her shoulders rose in a shrug and she made her way towards the single small table that had been left by the builders and she took a seat, her chin coming to a rest in the palm of her hands.

“I’m proud of you.” This time she felt her hair move, a flutter of it dancing along her neck.

“Haven’t had the chance to tell you that, heard you singing and had to push my limits. Don’t have much time left, but you have come so far, Viviane. From the broken woman who appeared on my doorstep one day, barely able to say her own name without crying. To the star you are today. They know your name, girl but it is more important that you do.”

The tears stung her eyes again at the words, and her heart started to pound in her chest. That was the hardest part of talking to the spirits, her aether was stolen far quicker from her than any other time, and the first place she felt it was always the racing of her heart.

“Thank you” she whispered, then fell silent again, a ghostly pair of lips pressing a warm kiss on her forehead.

“Vi wake up!” Qiha yelled in the door “We have to get to Ul'dah, it's two bells to the show. You were sound asleep! Come on. I need to be there for security detail.”

Starting awake, she looked around her Qiha was right she had been sleeping, she could even feel the lines on her face from the tablecloth where it had bunched up “Alright alright keep your drawers on I’m coming” she yelled back, the stretched, rising to her feet soon after.

“Maybe it was a dream” she muttered to herself, moving to pick up her bag and making certain her oven was off. She would have likely continued to think that had she not looked up at the mirror on the wall and seen the word Believe scrawled across the glass to remind her it had all been real.

HEAVENSWARD, STORMBLOOD AND DRK QUEST SPOILERS BELOW!!

Gan:

Gan and Haurchefant used to date in Heavensward and promised each other to travel together after the Vault, so after his passing she carried some of the dirt from his grave in a bag and spread a little bit of it on the wind every time she visited a new place. When she fell in love again, she spread the last crumbs of the dirt over Azim Steppe.

Gan knew that Esteem was not a person, but a manifestation of aether from the get-go, but didn't realize where the aether originated from, and so failed to determine Esteem as their own alter-ego and thought it was the previous owner of the job stone being pissed that they stole it.

I don't know if I mentioned it on this website or not, but Gan is from my fan-made Magan tribe, a cultist tribe of Black Mages. It derives its name from my grandma's maiden name, we had village witches in our bloodline (regardless if you believe in this stuff or not, I think it's neat). Lena, the manipulative khatun of the tribe and Gan's mom, alludes to the name me and my other blood relative were baptized with (not my legal name).

Alma:

Heavensward events are not in Alma's backstory. During HW / Stormblood while she was training under Zenos he appointed her as the Eikon Slayer - basically WoL but for the Empire. I included this part in her story mostly because I really wanted her and Gan to have an epic battle as enemies at some point. Alma was not Eikon Slayer for very long though. She originally agreed to this only to kill gods, but she couldn't turn a blind eye to Empire oppressing nations under its heel and the more apparent her presence was, the more garlean military began to pressure her to do the same.

At some point Alma used to be a part of Mol tribe but left for Kha tribe after experiencing a personal tragedy. Kha and their trades with outsiders were the main reason Alma was able to travel to Eorzea, start anew there and meet Gan. Because of her feisty nature she had a moniker "Mol Wolfling" in the Steppe, as in "wolf among the sheep". Some teased her like that, while some demeaned her.

As someone who spent a few years in Garlemald and loves tinkering with small mechanisms, Alma feels most at home among Ironworks crew. Cid was one of the first people to accept her post-Eikon Slayer arc and they're besties now.

*Akeru investigates the rest of the house until she comes across a set of stairs that lead downwards into the basement. With nowhere else on the floor to investigate, she starts to head down.

Wha...What the...!?

*Upon going down, she is immediately greeted with a horrifying sight. In the center of the room is a bed with messy covers that appear to be stained in blood. Lining the room are several sharp tools and surgical equipment, alongside a bunch of computer parts and technology Akeru doesn’t recognize.

This is bad...this is reminding me of the basement in my birth mother’s mansion...Is everyone else seeing this?

...Guys?

Guys...!? Guys!? Where are you!?

*Akeru begins to panic. She tries talking into the earpiece, but hears nothing in response.

Wh-Where did you all go!? D-Don’t leave me down here!

???: Akeru! Calm down!

Wha-! Who are-!?

404: Yes, it’s me. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Going down into the basement briefly cut the connection to the earpiece. It’s too dark and musty down there to establish a secure connection.

Wh-What do I do then?

404: Relax, I’ve already sorted it out. I reorganized the connection so that everyone can get a clear-enough view of what you’re seeing and hearing. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to hear them, but trust me when I say everyone’s listening.

404: To be honest, I actually hacked into the earpiece and have been watching you the whole time. I see you already encountered poor Lara. It was brave of you to do what you did.
