MASTER LIST OF INSTRUMENTAL PLAYLISTS FOR WRITING (OR FOR STUDYING, MAKING ART, ETC.)
Tumblr media
I find that the perfect writing playlist can GREATLY enhance the writing experience. Even if it doesn't make your writing "better" (which it can, since it helps writers with visualization, tone, and mood), it can definitely make your writing flow easier!
Personally, words distract me when I'm writing, either by breaking my train of thought or by getting me too into the music so that I'm jamming out to my favorite tunes instead of writing.
Therefore, I've amassed a vast knowledge of instrumental music across a variety of media over a course of many years. Now here I am, deciding to share all of them with you!
Maddy’s Favorite Instrumental Songs
Just like the title says. All of the best pieces of instrumental music I've ever heard, compiled together with no regard for genre. It can be a bit of a whiplash playlist, but some amazing recs in there that I just like listening to in my free time, not just for writing.
Maddy’s Ultimate Instrumental Playlist
A mega compilation of 550+ fantastic instrumental music from a variety of media and genres. Kind of a whiplash playlist if you put it on shuffle, but is a great start for anyone looking to find what kind of instrumental music they like! Playlist Groupings in Order: Independent instrumental songs, live action movies, animated movies, animated tv shows, live action tv shows, video games.
Maddy's Instrumental for Sleep
Some more chill vibe instrumental for people who either A) want to sleep or B) want a relaxed playlist that won't distract you with loud volume and sudden changes in tempo or melody.
MISC PLAYLISTS:
you're a haggard adventurer discovering worlds beyond your wildest dreams
Music to inspire wonder and wanderlust, the kind of feeling you get when you finally reach the end of a mountain hike and see the world stretching out before you.
you're a hero who's just lost everything
Basically the most sad instrumental music I could find. A playlist for grief and revenge.
more beneath the cut :)
you're a cowboy in the great American West
Cowboy instrumental for all of your ambient and writing needs. Or if you just really want to feel like a cowboy.
you're a divine witness
Epic choir music (no English). Most religious, some not, but all kind of have that eerie sacred vibe. I listen to this while writing my book about angels and demons.
you’re a scholar uncovering the secrets of the universe
Great chill study playlist! Has the kind of same exploratory/discovery type feel as the haggard adventurer playlist, but more dark academia.
you’re a villain plotting to take over the world
Villain-coded instrumental! Sinister, dark, and/or unsettling.
you're an academic weapon
HIGH BPM STUDY PLAYLIST! Keeps me focused, hyped, and helps me work faster!
you're an ancient god
Playlist that gives an ancient/eerie vibe. But some ancient gods are merciful- so there are some upbeat songs for wonder and awe!
you're falling in love
Music that encapsulates what I think falling in love feels like. Very beautiful, tender, and uplifting instrumental.
you're fighting the final battle
Intense and epic battle music for all of your fight-scene-writing needs! Good for getting shit done, but isn't necessarily restricted to high BPM like the academic weapon playlist.
you're having a tea party
Refined instrumental for a tea party, including classical, big band, and some miscellaneous goodies.
you're in a chase scene
Music for writing chase scenes. Pretty good hype music, too. Includes soundtracks from classic chase scenes in popular media!
you're in the medieval times
Medieval-sounding music for all of your ambient and/or writing needs.
you’re in your childhood room. the door is open a crack. people talk softly downstairs.
A playlist dedicated to nostalgia, to the feeling of lying in bed with your nightlight on after being too tired to stay awake at your family get-together. Could either make your day or break your heart lmao
you're the happiest you've ever been
Lighthearted instrumental meant to lift your spirits! A playlist dedicated to the joys of the little things.

it's sad how many reviews and stuff around tmbg seem to centre linnell as the sole dark and creepy writer of the band, never really crediting flansburgh too. do "hide away folk family," "dirt bike," "rabid child," "black ops," "cloisonné" mean nothing to them, smh.
#tmbg#this rigid dichotomy they tend to get forced into even tho linnell has written some happier songs and flansburgh plenty horrific ones#I'll be honest tho. I fully went into tmbw-interp-tab conspiracy when I first heard ''sleeping in the flowers'' lmao#I thought that song was about somebody getting murdered#the title seemed like a euphemism to me#it's actually. according to flansburgh. just about getting high in central park#and it's inspired by itchycoo park by the small faces which I knew and loved before and it's GREAT go listen to that. it's '60s psychedelia#so the lyrics are prob fantasising about spending time with the crush and essentially playfully talking sweet nothings together#bc they're stoned and in love#but honestly I thought ''you proclaim that you're an island. I proclaim that I'm one too''#''I declare that I am england. you declare that I have drowned''#sounded to me like someone trying to get away and be alone but the other person not getting the hint#esp bc the narrator introduces themself as not wanting to be ''known as the creep''#the part about getting a ride home with a drunk guy ''who showed me how to spin my head round and round''#sounded like the driver helping them get their story straight/take their mind off it#and the narrator feels they came across as ungrateful about their advice in their shocked state#plus the way the instrumental between the verses and chorus changes from fuzzy and gritty to lighthearted brass#like it's catching you off-guard#but it's not about any of that it's about being high#anyway none of that is an example of a genuinely creepy flansburgh song but

cello cello
my cello got wet today cuz i had to walk home in the rain (╯︵╰,) but its ok i got home in time to wipe it off
but if i left it at school, i would have gotten even more wet cuz the orchestra room is an underfunded storage closet that always floods
but if i bring it on the bus, there is a very high chance that it will break cuz there is like over 80 kids on this bus so its like 3 to a seat and so the only room is my lap and kids are aggressive
i also have to bring it home on fridays so do i drive? but gas is expensive and what if i get in a car accident and my cello gets smashed? my just paid off cello just destroyed man
do i risk my cello by putting it on the peg popping, bridge shifting, neck snapping bus, which are fixable ouchies or just leave it at school where there is a chance that the room will flood when it rains and get it warped, which is not much of a fixable ouchie
also i would use the school cellos but they suck and make me more self conscious about me sucking
also i didnt know this whole time my cello is a 1/2 size (this size is very small) and not a 3/4 size (a little bigger, but still small), so they have given me the wrong cello for the past 5 years (they were supposed to give me a 3/4, i called and they were like oops, but it took me 5 years to notice lol), oh well i like him, his name is Julliard :3

I don't know where to go with this question so maybe i can get some answers on tumblr...
Is it too late to start learning how to play a musical instrument at the age of 22?
And is it possible to become at least somewhat good at it over time?
I want it so much, it's my biggest dream, music has always been my passion, it gives my life meaning.
But i'm turning 22 in a week and i can only play like two songs. I don't have time to practice regularly cause i spend most of my time on studying in university. I try to practice when i can but it's hard and i don't know what i'm doing, i can read sheet music but that's pretty much it. And i feel like i would never learn how to play properly :(
I would appreciate any opinion or advice.

Hiii!!! I was wondering, if you had any advice to give for an aspiring bassist, what would it be?
Hi anon! I'll try my best to answer your question but ofc everyone's situation is different (and I assume you mean improving in the instrument)
I guess a very important thing is to tell whether the instrument is right for you; if practicing feels like a huge drag or a chore that's probably not a good sign
And also, of course you should practice the hard stuff that'll push your boundaries, but just experimenting and learning your favorite songs can also be very beneficial and help you enjoy playing more
Ahh hope this helps!

Taking a break from our regularly scheduled programming to ask for electric guitar suggestions.
I know it's going to be a huge learning curve, but I really want to learn one & one of my friends has a band that I'd love to join.
Any good starter brands? Or things such as picks that I could use when first starting?
