Pearl’s Mischief: The Day I Tried to Save the Yard
One day, not too long ago, I was in my room, getting ready for the day as usual, when suddenly I heard a loud crash from the kitchen window. My heart raced—there was no one home except me. Everyone had already left. Even though I was terrified, I knew it was my job to protect the house. I rushed downstairs, but on the way, I tripped over little Johnny’s shoes, the same ones I’d been nagging him to put away for days. After recovering from the tumble and shaking off the pain, I continued my sprint toward the kitchen.

To my surprise, I spotted my favorite toy ball sitting in the hallway. I hadn’t seen it in ages! Of course, I had to stop and play with it for a minute, rolling it around and savoring the moment before carefully putting it aside to play with later. With the ball safely tucked away, I dashed into the kitchen, and there it was—my breakfast! A delicious plate of salmon, eggs, and rice, with a refreshing bowl of water on the side. My tail wagged uncontrollably as I raced to my bowl and gobbled it all up. For a brief moment, I forgot all about that mysterious noise.

But then, the sound echoed through the house again. I padded over to the window to investigate and, to my annoyance, it was just the lawn people. They were messing up my yard, as usual. I barked furiously at them, but instead of being scared, they just laughed at me! Oh, how that got under my fur. I hate it when humans laugh at me! I knew I had to get revenge.
Then I remembered the special door my mom had installed just for me. She told me it was only for emergencies—like when I needed to go out and no one was home to let me out. But this felt like an emergency, right? I reasoned with myself. So, I bolted through the little door, ready to confront the lawn guy.

As soon as I stepped outside, I felt this strange, electric pull calling me—whispering, “Come here.” I barked at the lawn guy to scare him off, but he seemed unfazed. Before I knew it, my curiosity got the best of me, and I found myself wandering toward the source of that mysterious energy. I was so caught up in the excitement that I didn’t even notice the lawn guy on his phone, probably calling my parents.
It wasn’t until I was halfway down the street, heading straight into the fun and frenzy of the neighborhood, that I heard my dad’s voice. He was running after me, calling my name, “Pearl!” Uh-oh. I knew then I was in big trouble. I tried to sneak back home before he could catch me, but my arch-enemy, Goldie—the next-door neighbor’s dog who thinks she’s better than everyone—started barking. She got my dad’s attention with a smirk on her face. I growled at her, ready for a fight, but by the time I turned around, my dad was right in front of me, looking very displeased.

“Hi, Dad,” I barked sheepishly.
“You’re in big trouble, Pearl,” he said, crossing his arms. “We told you not to go outside when we’re not home. Now, I’m taking your door away, and you’ll have to use the potty pad like you did when you were a puppy. And, you’re on punishment—back to your cage!”
I whined in protest. It wasn’t fair! This all started because of the lawn man. I was just trying to protect our home!
