so i've been thinking on this for a few days now, and of the ae games that i've played (dragonfable, adventurequest, mechquest, and aqworlds, though it's been over a decade since i touched that last one), mechquest is honestly the one with the darkest tone overall? like, right out the gate, the world that you play in is at war. the very first mission you do on the dropship in the prologue is track down an alien infiltrator that snuck in. by the time you reach soluna city the shadowscythe invasion has seeped into so much of everyday life. the hospital is overwhelmed by the war and needs volunteers. the museum doing archeological digs is having to contend with the shadowscythe at ancient temples. the *pizza place* sometimes comes under attack by the alien forces attacking loreon. and this is all stuff that happens before you ever even go off planet.
sure, mechquest still has the ae games classic combo of absurdist humor and internet memes and tonal whiplash, and the other games can certainly get dark, especially dragonfable, but the overall *tone* of mechquest is the darkest and the bleakest, under the surface. especially since we all know how it ends. or at least that's how it feels to me.
#mechquest#ae games#thoughts and analysis#i started thinking about this at work a few days ago and have not been able to stop since#mechquest is DARK#incredibly fun don't get me wrong#but so so dark#i joked about having the hero having to use their shitty van to transport cysero due to an ambulance shortage in another post but honestly#that just further adds to my argument about the tone#things are dark! and scary! there are moments of levity and joy but they are overshadowed by the war with the shadowscythe#and something about that has grabbed my brain and refused to let go

AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights Review (Nintendo Switch OLED)
For this AdventureQuest 8-Bit Dungeons & DoomKnights Review, we must try and defeat DoomKnight and his army of the evil undead. Explore a huge world and battle vampires, ghosts, death knights, liches, ancient evils, giant flying eyeballs, chicken cows... and other unspeakable horrors!
AdventureQuest 8-Bit Dungeons & DoomKnights Review Pros:
- Beautiful 8 Bit graphics. - 195MB download size. - Chiptune soundtrack. - The music player is in the extras menu. - Screen settings - CRT filter, frame/border, aspect (pixel perfect/4:3/widescreen), and color palette (vanilla/game child/game child contrast/virtual child/greyscale). - A beautifully created game manual that acts as a tutorial, shows off the map, and is housed with many images and tips. - Chaos mods - play the main game in black and white mode, play the game as the dog, or play a spin on the Pac-Man genre. - Necronancy is a different game where you play as Nancy the necromancer. - 2D adventure RPG gameplay. - Solid tight controls. - Hack and slash combat. - Enemies can drop coins and items randomly. - Save points are found in the world. - The game plays out on a screen-by-screen basis. - Respawn enemies by leaving and red entering a screen. - Many secrets to find. - The game has excellent Easter eggs and nods to classic games and tropes. - Main and mini-boss fights. - Get a bloodthirsty Pomeranian sidekick! - Meet new memorable characters. - All character interactions are done via in-game art sequences. - Instant reloading upon death, you go to your last save point. Enemies can stay dead upon respawning. - The health system at play is 3 dots and you can pick up health. - Modern retro adventure game. - Gets very addictive. - Over time collect upgrades for more health or skulls. - Skulls are used to send your dog out through dog doors and get killed. - Excellent level design. - With some deaths staying permanent with enemies and doors staying open it does make replaying parts a bit easier or less stressful. - Does have the cool thing of having a respawn point right next to big boss fights. - Progression is very satisfying. AdventureQuest 8-Bit Dungeons & DoomKnights Review Cons: - Takes some getting used to not pressing the start button to pause. - Jumping is fine but it's not how modern games are it's a case of pressing jump and then moving rather than both at the same time. - The manual doesn't mention the controls. - Is difficult a lot of the time but always fair. - Movement is not always as smooth as you would like. - Doorways are very sensitive meaning you can constantly walk in and out of a door by accident. - A game like this has the get hit by enemies the moment you enter a screen niggle. - Checkpoints are far apart. Take on Vampires & Ghosts with AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights
AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights action RPG adventure game for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Which is the result of the work and effort from developer Artix Entertainment. Available on Steam with Positive reviews. While having my fair share of experiences with all sorts of Linux titles. Today, I'm diving into AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights, a title that's getting some attention now. Developed by Artix Entertainment and published by Nami Tentou, this release stands out as a unique blend of retro charm and humour. First off, let's talk about what sets AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights apart. This title is a homage to the classic 8-bit era, reminiscent of early NES games. It’s a journey through a pixelated world brimming with a quirky mix of enemies – think vampires, ghosts, and even chicken cows. Yes, you read that right, chicken cows! It's clear that the developers aimed to sprinkle a generous dose of humor into the experience. What's appealing about em>AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights is its sheer size. With over 500 screens across its Overworld and Underworld, it promises a sprawling adventure. Additionally, it includes two bonus games – "ChronoKnight" and "NecroNancy" – something you don’t often see. And for those who like to tweak their experience, there's a range of mods and visual options, including a nostalgic CRT filter.
AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeon & DoomKnights Trailer
youtube
The storyline centers around Artix, a young hero on a quest to become a Paladin. The narrative kicks off with a familiar trope – returning home to find it destroyed – and propels you into a quest against an undead army. It's a simple yet effective setup that serves as the backdrop for the adventure. However, it's not all smooth sailing. AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeon & DoomKnights has its quirks, and not all of them are charming. While the title starts off with a basic combat system, it evolves into a more complex style reminiscent of Metroidvania. This shift is also welcome but could have been smoother. On the flip side, the humor is a big win. The digital manual and magazine are filled with laughs, bringing a light-hearted touch to the action RPG adventure. But, it's worth noting that some elements like loot and secrets don’t quite hit the mark. So this may leave a bit to be desired. AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights is a mixed bag. It's a nod to the past, packed with humor and a large world to explore, but it stumbles in some areas like gameplay depth. For those who cherish 8-bit nostalgia and a good laugh, it's worth a look. It's a journey through a pixel world that's sure to evoke memories and smiles, even if it doesn't redefine the genre. Priced at $19.99 USD / £16.75 / 19,50€ on Steam. While offering support for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC.

Lastly, unlike the original game, AdventureQuest 3D features a real-time multiplayer combat system, replacing the old turn-based single-player combat. The developer intentionally designed it to be playable through short sessions. On the other hand, AdventureQuest 3D is also the ideal game to play while you’re out and about. You can be more flexible with your strategies when facing different opponents, utilizing the various unlocked classes available to you. Hence, you’re never limited to a single class or a certain set of abilities for all your battles moving forward. That’s because the game allows you to choose and switch between classes on the fly. For example, while you do play as a fictional, class-based character, you’re not limited to only one class. However, there are tons of little features sprinkled within the game that makes it unique from others. It features many staples of the MMORPG genre, including various classes, a vast fantasy world, mythical creatures, and magic.Īt first glance, AdventureQuest 3D might seem like your regular MMORPG. What Is AdventureQuest 3D? Photo from SteamĪdventureQuest 3D is a massively multiplayer online RPG (MMORPG) that comes as a sequel to the original AdventureQuest. Is it the same as the original? The mobile MMO is a sequel to the old classic and brings back everything you loved from the original. There’s a world to discover full of player interactions, enemies that can use actual items in the world, and even pet monsters.Īberoth is an old-school RPG that doesn’t offer many tutorials and thrusts you into the world to make your way and survive against serious threats. Pick up the key and sneak out of the dungeon to start the real adventure. In Aberoth, you begin as a prisoner guarded by a sleeping orc who has misplaced the key on the ground by your cell. Aberoth – Old School RPG That Won’t Hold Your Hand If you don’t like PvP battles against other players, choose one that doesn’t include others. Consider whether you want gameplay that involves others when choosing the best browser-based RPG for you. Many modern browser games also incorporate some MMO elements, bringing other real players to team up with or fight again. Others will let you adventure for as long as you want, which means you can grind through monsters to earn XP. Some browser-based RPGs will lock you out from completing more objectives once you’ve run out of stamina or energy for the day - depending on the system. Some games offer the classic medieval adventure story, while others are set in broody cities or islands that float through clouds.Īnother consideration is whether you mind limited progression. Choosing the Best Browser RPG GamesĬonsider what type of environment interests you as a factor because you’ll spend a lot of time in the world as you complete quests and level up. It just takes a little more work to ferret out the best ones. While many classic games like AdventureQuest switched to gameplay that requires a download, there are still plenty to choose from, that work right on your browser. Browser games are still alive - despite what you might believe after the demise of Flash in browsers.

Free casual games
Over the past decade, free online gaming has boomed. It now includes a large number of game developers, publishers and web portals, as well as millions of casual gamers. Although they are more scarce than portals and publishers, talented game developers are still in high demand. However, more brands and companies are looking for sponsorship deals to provide free games of high quality.
Sponsoring online games can bring your brand exposure. More companies are turning to game sponsorship and product placement as a serious advertising channel. Portals are plentiful with many gaming-oriented sites offering developers' creations. In fact, some game developers even offer their own portals like Ninjakiwi or Armor Games. These two are the most popular and innovative gaming designers, with Armor Games ranking in the top 1000.
These flash game designers and developers are often the ones behind such success. It is usually only a few experienced designers who plant the seeds that allow top-free gaming websites to flourish. The popularity of casual gaming, both paid and free, has made it so popular online that it is the most prominent genre on the top-trafficked websites in the world.
Ninjakiwi has an in-house team of developers. They are also the owners of Bloons, a very popular brand of games. Bloons' first game was released in 2007 and has been played hundreds of millions times. It is easy to see why online games are becoming so popular with advertisers. It's even more fascinating to see the demographics of casual gamers, with a significant percentage being young adults. This has attracted the attention of blue-chip companies such as O2 and Orange, who frequently advertise through Mochiads, an in-game preloading ads platform.
The creativity, detail, and complexity of the games' designs will increase as more people advertise for them. Developers now create games that are targeted at specific age groups, such as teens, young adults, and mothers.
The number of Ninjakiwis games is growing rapidly. Their brand has been more prominent over the last year and they have expanded their production of Bloons games to other concepts. Some have received more enthusiasm than others. There are following free casual games.
Boombot Games - 1 & 2
Hotcorn Games - 1 & 2
Potion Madness
Powerpool
Replay Racer - 1 & 2
Rings
Shinju
Sinta
Zeba
Save the Alien
Ninjakiwi is a well-known brand with their products being published on hundreds of gaming portals. Mochiads is one of their advertising platforms. This platform is used by both game publishers and game developers who make revenue from publishing games. Developers and publishers make money through game impressions and clicks.
Armor games is the other free game developer mentioned above. It is the largest of the 2. Armor games develops in-house games, but sponsors independent developers. They fund their creations and share revenue through their advertising platform. Ninjakiwi has a smaller range of games than Armor Games, and Armor has helped to fund some of the most innovative games on the Internet. Below is a list of some their top games:
Armed with Wings – 1 and 2
Smash the Castle
Hedgehog Launch
Hedgehog Launch 2
Fancy Pants Adventure 1 and 2
Gemcraft
Gemcraft Chapter 0
The Last Stand 1 and 2
Pillage the Village
Sonny
Sonny 2
Warfare 1917
It's not uncommon for developers and portals to share each other games. Miniclip.com, the largest casual game provider online, originally suggested this idea. Miniclip.com was the first to allow webmasters publish their games on thousands more sites. It can be very profitable to share and create viral copies of popular games online.
There are many other high-quality game publishers, developers and portals. Some of the best ones to mention are Crazy Monkey Games and Addicting Games.
Many classic arcade games have been remade free of charge. This will be a great delight for fans of the 80s arcade.
Flash has been used to reimagine classic games like PacMan, Ms PacMan and Space Invaders. They are also available online as free games. These flash reproductions were created by Paul Neave (a skilled flash developer).
In the midst of this 10-year period of rapid growth, more comprehensive flash gaming communities emerged. Artix Entertainment has created five flash games, including MechQuest. This is an example of a very popular community. MechQuest, an online Fantasy/Sci-Fi Web RPG that allows you to play both a paid and free side. It is built with flash and has millions members. It aims to strike a balance between casual game play and more serious gaming.
Free online games like MechQuest and AdventureQuest, DragonFable and ArchKnight are a good start to what online gaming should look like. They offer gamers a balanced dose of online entertainment that doesn't require a lifetime commitment to making progress or gaining rewards. Games like World of Warcraft, which reward excessive game play, are the exact opposite.
In the near future, the free games market will continue its rapid growth and more developers will enter the market. It remains to be seen if flash will continue to be the main publishing platform, but it will still hold its position as the dominant platform for all free online games developers. As free games become more popular and encroach on paid gamers, fans can expect to see more flash games available online.

It highlights three character classes that you can switch between voluntarily. You'll additionally get an open world to investigate, huge amounts of journeys, and that's just the beginning. The game offers a full scope of multiplayer alternatives, including PvP and community modes. It's a lighter, marginally reviving interpretation of the MMORPG type. Notwithstanding, on the opposite side of that coin, this game isn't as profound as different MMORPGs.
School of Chaos Online
Value: Free to play
Envision an existence where tormenting was alright and school yard battling was supported. That is basically School of Chaos Online. It consolidates the furious public activity of secondary school with the environmental pressure of a jail and you can play it with a huge amount of individuals. It has a huge amount of stuff to do. Be that as it may, not at all like most MMORPGs, you can really make your own missions. You'll have an adjustable character, different battling moves to learn, and you can join factions to take part in tribe wars. It's totally different from different games in the class. Be that as it may, in case you're searching for something like that, this game isn't for you.
Note:Also read here more about Wow classic.
Sins Raid
Value: Free to play
Sins Raid is another more current MMORPG for portable. This one uses mechanics from old MMORPGs while likewise remaining generally present day. It has a little, yet exemplary arrangement of character classes alongside community assaults, huge amounts of stuff to do, good character customization, and the sky is the limit from there. Moreover, this one inclines toward the game's capacity to be playable both performance and with others so there is no strain to bounce on and promptly join an organization or anything like that. The game has procedure RPG components too in the event that you like that. This may not be a MMORPG in the most perfect sense, however it's still great.
Balanced punishment
Value: Free to play
Balanced punishment is another of the fresher Android MMORPGs. It has a ton of a similar stuff as different MMORPGs, including the huge open world, huge amounts of missions, gigantic helpful and serious fights, and online PvP. We delighted in that this game has FPS style PvP game modes, for example, Occupy where you catch a point and fire slings at one another. Character customization is better than expected and the narratives and journeys aren't stunning yet they aren't horrible either. This is an auto-play MMORPG so players who detest that should avoid this. Moreover, the miniature exchange technique is extremely forceful as of the hour of this composition. You can even now advance without them, yet it takes longer.

The Offspring are playing a gig inside World of Tanks
Is it your dream to see The Offspring perform in a war zone? You’re in luck, oh haver of hyper-specific dreams, because the Californian rock band is set to play all their hit songs inside World of Tanks tomorrow, September 18. Put down your guns, stop loading that shell, because there’s going to be an armistice, and it’ll be set to timeless classics like Pretty Fly (For a White Guy).
This is a first for Wargaming’s vehicular skirmish game. Before, the only music you could make was the sweet sounds of war, which sounded a lot like explosions. It comes hot on the heels of The Offspring headlining Wargaming Fest: Tanker Day in Minsk, Belarus, which happened over the weekend.
Drafting a popular music act to perform in a game has happened before. According to Epic, 10.7 million people attended Marshmello’s concert in Fortnite earlier this year. 43 million people later watched the EDM artist’s recap video on YouTube. And, back in August, nu metal band Korn drew a crowd for their raucous set inside MMORPGs AdventureQuest 3D and AdventureQuest Worlds.

The Growing Popularity of Free & Casual Games
Free online internet gaming has exploded over the past 10 years and now comprises of a large collection of game developers, publishers, web portals and millions of casual game players. Talented game developers are in more limited supply than publishers and portals, yet even they are steadily growing in supply as more companies and brands look for sponsorship deals with high quality upcoming free games.
Wide brand exposure can be gained from sponsoring free online games and more companies are looking towards game sponsorship and in game product placement as a serious advertising platform. Portals are in the greatest supply with a huge amount of gaming orientated sites offering the developers creations, indeed some game developers also offer their own web portals such Ninjakiwi and Armor Games. These are two of the more popular and innovative gaming developers with Armor Games holding a top 1000 traffic rating.
Behind such successes are talented flash game designers and coders, it is usually one or two experienced designers that plant the seeds from which top free gaming websites flourish. Casual gaming both free and paid downloads have become so huge online that the genre has the greatest presence in the world's most highly trafficked websites.
Ninjakiwi have an in house team of developers, they are owners of the very popular brand of games named Bloons. The first Bloons game was introduced back in mid 2007 and the series has already been played hundreds of millions of times. If you compare such an audience exposure rate to the most popular video watched on you tube, it is easy to see why advertisers are turning to free online games to reach global audiences. What's more intriguing are the demographics behind casual game players with a considerable percentage of the audience being young adults. This demographic has caught the attention of many blue chip companies including mobile giants Orange and O2 who regularly advertise through Mochiads - an in game preloading ads platform.
As the advertising revenue increases for free games so will the creativity, detail and complexity of their design. Developers are now creating games targeted specifically at certain age ranges, including teens, young adults and mums.
Ninjakiwis' list of games is expanding rapidly. As their brand has received greater exposure over the past year they have branched out from their original success of Bloons to produce other games with different concepts, some have been received with more enthusiasm than others. Some of their successes include:
Bloons - Including the player packs, more bloons and even more bloons, tower defense games, hot air bloon, bloons pop 3
Boombot Games - 1 and 2
Hotcorn Games - 1 and 2
Potion Madness
Powerpool
Replay Racer - 1 and 2
Rings
Shinju
Sinta
Zeba
Ninjakiwi has established a loyal fan base with their range being published across hundreds of medium to large sized gaming portals. One of their advertising platforms is through the previously mentioned Mochiads, a major advertising platform for both game developers and game publishers who earn revenue from publishing games. A small advert is shown whilst each game is loading in a web browser, developers and publishers earn money from game impressions and advert clicks.
The other free games developer previously mentioned, Armor games, is the larger of the 2. Armor develops in house games and sponsors independent developers, funding their creations and offering revenue sharing across their advertising platform. Armor games has a much more extensive range games than Ninjakiwi and has funded the creation of some of the most imaginative games on the internet, a list of some of their best games is compiled below:
Armed with Wings - 1 and 2
Crush the Castle
Hedgehog Launch
Hedgehog Launch 2
Fancy Pants Adventure - 1 and 2
Gemcraft
Gemcraft Chapter 0
The Last Stand 1 & 2
Pillage the Village
Sonny
Sonny 2
Warfare 1917
It is common to find developers and portals alike sharing each other's games. This idea was originally invoked by the biggest casual free game provider on the internet - Miniclip.com. Their success grew from allowing webmasters to publish their games on thousands of smaller sites. Sharing and creating viral copies of successful games can prove a very lucrative strategy on the internet.
There are many more high quality game developers, publishers and portals, ones worth a mention include Crazy Monkey Games, Addicting Games, Newgrounds and Kongregate. Free game production has also seen the remake of many old classic arcade games which will delight fans of the 80's arcade.
Classic games such as PacMan, Ms PacMan, Space Invaders, Pong and Frogger have all been remade using flash and are now available to play as free online games. Paul Neave, a talented flash developer is responsible for such flash reproductions.
More comprehensive flash gaming communities have sprung up within this landmark 10 year period of growth. One example of an immensely popular community is MechQuest, this is one of currently 5 flash games created by Artix Entertainment. MechQuest is an online Fantasy/Sci-Fi Web RPG game that offers both a free and premium paid side. The game is built using flash and has millions of members in its community. Striking a balance between casual and hardcore game play it aims to offer a compromise allowing players who do not wish to spend all day at their PC's a casual multiplayer experience.
Of course free online games such as MechQuest, AdventureQuest, DragonFable, ArchKnight and BattleOn.com are a step in the right direction for what online gaming should be about (if we are looking from a healthy perspective), they offer gamers a balanced dosage of online fun which don't require a lifelong commitment to progress and gain in game rewards. The total opposite would be games such as World of Warcraft which are designed to reward excessive amounts of game play.
The free games market will continue to its rapid growth in the foreseeable future and more developers will come into the market. Whether flash will remain the markets main publishing platform remains to be seen but for now it will keep its dominant position with all free online game developers using it. Fans can expect to find more elaborate free online flash games being introduced in the coming years as free games compete and very much encroach upon paid game audiences.
