Advanced Variable Geo
Variable Geo certainly wasn’t a good fighting game. Like many adult games, it primarily existed to show off its naked female contestants, with the quality of the fighting action coming in at a distant second, not to mention the inherent ropiness of PC98 action games. Such games have a limited audience to their content, but the publishers must’ve felt the series had mass market appeal. Which is why later on the game underwent a reboot on various console systems as Advanced V.G., with questionable content heavily toned down or removed altogether, depending on the platform, making the V.G. series accessible to more players.

Advanced Variable Geo 2
The first Advanced V.G. game is a very mediocre take on Street Fighter II formula, with some Fatal Fury thrown in for good measure. Of course, it’s understandable that it’s very hard to exceed the industry veterans in their field, especially when your prior experience was mainly adult games for Japanese PCs. TGL surely learned their lesson and focused their effort on the sequel, Advanced Variable Geo 2, released in 1998 exclusively for the Sony PlayStation. But is this one still another run of the mill fighter featuring a cast of pretty gals, or maybe there’s more than meets the eye?

Sega Saturn - Advanced Variable Geo
Title: Advanced Variable Geo / アドヴァンスト ヴァリアブル・ジオ
Developer: Interrupt / Studio Deen
Publisher: Technical Group Laboratory (TGL)
Release date: 14 March 1997
Catalogue No.: T-32501G
Genre: 2D Fighting
TGL are not really known for their great games but they do have a cult following like many crappy Japanese game companies do. Advanced VG comes in slightly above that crappy game company image but only just. The Saturn has its fair share of girly fighters such as Sonic Council, Pretty Fighter X, Asuka 120% Burning Fest, Sailormoon SuperS, and the piss-poor Fist. So how does Advanced VG stand up to those? Well, it’s certainly no Asuka 120% but it’s not as bad as Pretty Fighter X either. Graphically it’s not much of an improvement over the original Super Famicom and PC Engine Super CD versions apart from bigger sprites. The animation seems just as poor as the background. However, the Saturn version does have much better cut scenes but even these are poor for what a Saturn can do. Playability-wise this is also a bit of a dud with only the most basic of moves available and hardly any combinations. Sound-wise it’s not too bad I guess but I still wouldn’t listen to the music on its own apart from the opening and intro themes.
To be honest I wouldn’t bother getting this unless you’re a sucker for girly fighters or just want it for collection purposes. Even with a Story mode (that’s annoying because you can’t skip anything) this isn’t going to keep you entertained for long.
There was also a limited-edition box set which comes with a jigsaw puzzle and is a whopping 25 cm x 32 cm in size. That box set carries the catalogue code T-32506G.
