Chapter One: New Partner

A story in which a kind hearted detective works with a android sent by CyberLife, throwing them down a path full of bumps in the road, them both finding some part of their humanity along the way.

The city of Detroit is busy as usual during the evening. Even though the day was slowly coming to an end that doesn't make the city stop. The tall buildings reaching high for the darkening sky, the lights making the advanced city glow. The big animated billboards display the latest Android, casting a hue of light onto the people that passed under it, on their way to their unknown destinations. Some people just getting off of work, some just making their way to it.

Devon Cassidy was like these people. She had gone to work during the early hours of the morning and an hour ago she was on her way home but getting a call about a new case has her dressing out of her comfy clothes and heading out into the cold November air to make her way back to the station.

"Hey, old man. Just got a call about a case and I'm not sure if you know this or not but you're my partner and this is your job too. Put the alcohol down and call me back." The blonde sighs, placing her phone in her lap. Hank Anderson wasn't an easy person to be partners with especially if your work ethic was completely different from his.

Devon is a hungry and young detective that still enjoys her job whilst Hank has burned out and lets his life problems dull his fire. She has been partners with Hank for almost four years so she has once seen that drive and fire in him and she also knows why it disappeared. The woman turns into the parking lot of the precinct, pulling into an empty parking space. She needed to run in a grab her gun then she'd try and give her partner another call before she went on the hunt looking for him.

She climbs out of her car, sticking her phone and keys into the pocket of her long black coat that sits snug over her white long sleeve blouse that's tucked into her grey dress pants before making her way to the front doors of the station. The waiting area was quiet, no one sitting around.

"Back so soon, detective?" The ST300 android behind the front desk, Emily, asks with a small smile. "Yeah, got a new case." Devon gives the android a friendly smile. The waist-high doors open, giving the detective access to the bull pin.

The woman pauses in her tracks when she notices a tall figure standing in front of hers and Hanks desks. There wasn't anyone there and she could tell that there were maybe only three people here based on their terminals being lit up but they were probably else were out of sight. His back was to her and she could see straight away that he is an android. He wore a two-toned grey suit jacket. 'ANDROID' and 'RK800' glowed white on the back along with a blue triangle and blue trim that matched. She could also see that on his right arm was a band that glows a bright blue.

The detective walks closer, her heels clicking against the tiled floors of the precinct. The noise of her shoes catches The androids' attention, causing him to turn in her direction, giving her a better view of him. The android wore a nice white button-down shirt that is tucked neatly into the dark jeans that hug his legs, his feet adoring some black boots. His hands adjust a slick black tie. A business casual kind of look. On the front of his suit on the right side of his chest, 'RK800' shines bright whilst there was a small print of his serial number underneath. Blue trimmed the collar of the suit which made her green eyes travel up to his face. Boy, did CyberLife have fun making this android.

This RK800 had a boyish charm to him with his round, slightly slanted doe eyes that were framed with his soft expressioned eyebrows and his full pink lips. Freckles dot his creamy skin along with a few constructively placed moles. There was also a sharpness to him with his high cheekbones and slanted jawline that led to his round chin with a small dimple in the middle. His brown hair was styled neatly except for a rebellious strand that sways in front of his forehead, kissing the faded expression lines that rest there.

He was so detailed and extremely human-looking that if it weren't for his suit and the blue LED on his right temple, Devon would have just thought he was a regular handsome human male but instead he is a unique handsome android male.

"Detective Cassidy?" His voice has a soft rasp to it and it's a quite calming and charming tone. "Yeah, that's me. Can I help you?" The blonde raises a curious eyebrow at him. "My name is Connor, I'm the android sent by CyberLife. I was assigned on a case with you and Lieutenant Anderson." The blonde's lips quarks up slightly in a small smirk. His voice is very smooth for an android, not as robotic as some of the others she's spoken to. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Connor." Devon sticks a hand out to the android who looks to her hand for a moment, LED switching to yellow before he reaches out and shakes her hand. She makes a note at how soft his hand feels against her own more calloused hand.

"I actually just came back for my gun." She lets go of his hand so she could move around behind her desk. The woman fishes out her keys and unlocks a drawer to pull out her holster and firearm. This is why she usually kept the thing at home with her because she'd always just have to come right back here to retrieve it.

"You're the android that saved that little girl that was held hostage, right?" It was all over the news three months ago. A little girl held at gunpoint on the edge of a terrace by her own family's android. If Devon wasn't only strictly on homicide cases she would have been there. Technically, she could have been since the father was shot and killed along with a fellow officer but they didn't need someone to figure out who killed them. Devon can remember seeing an image of Connor on the news, them calling him the "Deviant Hunter", the newest android model made by CyberLife, specifically created to chase down these androids that deviate. Another title he was given was "The Negotiator" since he was able to talk the android down and let the little girl go. Devon wondered if this case she was assigned to had something to do with a deviant since he was here.

"Yes, that was me." Connor gives a small nod, causing the tuft of hair to sway with his movements. Devon nods, clipping her holster to her belt, sticking her gun inside of it. Connor stands straight with his hands tucked neatly behind his back. The LED on the side of his head spins yellow as his brown eyes ghost over the female detective, scanning her.

His LED turns back to blue once he was finished. "Do you know where Lieutenant Anderson might be? I searched for him when I first arrived but it seems that he's not here." Devon glances at the desk that is to her left then back to the tall android. "Well, being his partner I have an idea." She sighs, adjusting her coat. "Our dear Lieutenant likes to frequent the bar more then he does work sometimes." She tries not to judge the older man, understanding that he uses alcohol to cope with his pain that life has dealt him but that doesn't mean she had to agree with it or like it. "I can show you which one, we're working on the same case anyway." The blonde woman shrugs her shoulders slightly.

"That would be quite helpful." Connor nods and the detective makes sure she has all her things and begins to walk towards the exit, motioning the android to follow her. "Good luck, detective." Emily calls out to her and Devon flashes her a smile over her shoulder. "Thanks, Em!" She waves, walking with Connor to the front doors. The android steps before her, opening the door first and stepping to the side to let her go out first. "Thanks." She gives him a soft smile.

The sky is dark and there were clouds rolling in, signaling that it was going to rain soon. "Come on, it's only a block from here, we can walk there." She already begins walking in the direction, Connor falling to a steady pace by her side. "Do you not have your own transportation?" The android asks curiously. "I do, but this isn't much of a walk and I'll probably have to drive Hank's car anyway." She shrugs nonchalantly. "Why does Lieutenant Anderson frequent a bar offend as you put it?" Devon glances at the curious android beside her, noticing that his eyes are a beautiful brown that reminds her of creamy coffee or a sweet chocolate cake. "It's not my story to tell, Connor. Maybe he'll tell you one day." She highly doubts that considering the older man absolutely hates androids.

The pair make it to a fairly lit bar with a blue neon sign in the window that says, 'Jimmy's Bar' in bold letters. After working with the Lieutenant for a while she has learned that when he disappears she could usually always find him here. The rain was beginning the pour but Connor nor Devon seemed to mind. They both walk to the wooden door that had a sign saying Androids and Dogs aren't allowed inside. Connor notices the sign but he doesn't seem to care as he follows the detective inside. A few patrons of the bar glance in their direction when the bell rings above the door and some of them glare when they see an android.

"Come on." Devon moves deeper into the bar, sending a glare at a man who was giving her the stink eye because she walked in with Connor. "Shit, I thought androids weren't allowed in here." Someone mutters but the blonde pays them no mind and makes her way over to a man that was hunched over the bar. She could recognize his long white hair from anywhere.

"Have enough, Hank?" She settles down onto the stool beside the older man who shifts his eyes onto her when she makes herself comfortable. "The hell you doing here kid?" He grumbles slightly, taking another sip of his poison of choice. "Looking for an old man with a bad haircut, know where I can find him?" She leans her head on her hand and smiles at the man playfully and he smirks slightly, just a little amused by her comment.

"Lieutenant Anderson," Connor moves so he is on Hanks right, making his presence known. "My name is Connor. I'm the android sent by Cyberlife." He introduces himself the same way he did with Devon. "I looked for you at the station, lucky enough Detective Cassidy knew where to find you." Cyberlife did a real good job at making this guy seem human because he had more facial expressions then the average android but the way he spoke could be considered more robotic then how people normally talk. Hank glares at his partner and she smiles sweetly at him, causing him to roll his eyes. "What do you want?" Hank mumbles, keeping his eyes cast down at the bar, clearly not wanting anything to do with Connor.

"You and Detective Cassidy were assigned a case early this evening. A homicide involving a CyberLife android." That makes sense as to why he's here now. "In accordance with procedure, the company has allocated a specialized model to assist investigators." Connor informs the Lieutenant and Devon looks between the two. "Well I don't need any more assistance since I have this kid," Hank jerks his thumb over to Devon. "Specially not from a plastic asshole like you. So just be a good lil' robot and get the fuck out of here." Devon sighs, rubbing her forehead. She knew it was going to be difficult to convince Hank to come along since an android is involved. She knows no matter how much Hank likes her he wouldn't listen to her on this one.

Connor pauses for a moment, seemingly processing his choices of how to approach the situation. "I'm sorry, Lieutenant, but I must insist." Devon sighs, knowing that this won't turn out great seeing how Hank pauses when Connor begins to speak. "My instructions stipulate that I have to accompany you and Detective Cassidy."

"You know where you can stick your instructions?" It was a hypothetical question and Hank chuckles into his drink, slightly nudging Devon with his elbow but she merely just rolls her eyes at his childish joke. "No," Connor says honestly, tilting his head to the side. "Where?" He looks like a lost puppy with the way he had his head turned to the side and his brows slightly pushed together. Devon couldn't help but think the android looked somewhat adorable while doing this. Hank turns his head to fully look at the android. The woman couldn't see his face but she could tell he was glaring. "Never mind." He grumbles, turning back to his drink, shaking his head slightly.

"You know what? I'll buy you one for the road." Connor offers next, surprising both the Lieutenant and the Detective. Devon knew Connor was just trying to figure out a way to get Hank out of the bar and this was definitely the right approach. "What do you say?" When Hank doesn't answer Connor turns his eyes onto Jimmy, the bartender and owner of the small bar. "Bartender, the same again please." Jimmy looks unsure but Connor places some money on the bar and he goes ahead and prepares Hanks drink. "See that Jim? Wonders of technology...make it a double."

HANK /\

NEUTRAL

Jimmy sets the glass in front of Hank who eagerly brings it to his lips and throws his head back. Hank sucks in a breath as it burns all the way down and Devon raises a brow at him, wondering if he'll actually give in. Hank wraps an arm around Devon's shoulders and turns his head to look back at the android to his right. "Did you say homicide?" Connor looks at the man in front of him and Devon sighs, shrugging the man's arm off of her shoulders.

"Come on, Hank. We got a job to do." She slides off her stool and Hank pushes himself out of his seat as well, slightly stumbling. "Keys." Devon holds her hand out and Hank goes to protest but she keeps a firm stare on the older man and eventually he sighs heavily, fishing out a pair of keys from his pocket. He slaps them into her awaiting palm and ruffles her hair up slightly as he passes her, causing the woman to smile. Connor watches their interactions closely, his LED blinking yellow as he processes the new information he was coming up with. The relationship the two have is very much one that a father and daughter would have.

"Let's go, Connor." Devon beckons the android forward as she fixes her hair. He quickly matches her pace, ignoring the glares he got as they left Jimmy's bar. "Hurry up, kid!" Hank shouts from his car and she unlocks it quickly so he could get out of the rain. Connor climbs into the backseat and Devon positions herself into the front, starting the car. She jumps when loud medal music filters through the car and she was quick to turn it down to a more reasonable level. "Jesus, old man! Ever heard of turning the radio down before you turn the car off?" She asks, backing out of his parking space and he rolls his eyes. "Oh, shut up." He turns the music up more but he kept it at a decent level so he wouldn't have to fight with the woman as she drove them to their case.

The car ride was only filled with Hanks loud music and his occasional remarks about not wanting to work right now which she always ignores. Devon would occasionally glance at Connor though the rearview to make sure he was okay. Of course, he's okay, he's an android. The woman held so much compassion and empathy for people and androids alike. When she first met Hank and he saw these traits, he would always wondered how she could handle a rough job like theirs but he soon found out that the loving woman also has a fire that burns inside of her and she was tougher then she looks.

Devon stops the car, the headlights shining through the rain that's pouring overhead, the holographic yellow caution tape shining slightly. There were police cars lining the street with their red and blue lights on and there was a small crowd forming in the street. "You wait here," Hank says pointing back at Connor. "We won't belong." He begins to open his door. "Whatever you say, Lieutenant," Connor says with a calm voice making Hank pause before he gets out.

"Fucking-A, whatever I say," Hank mutters under his breath as he gets out of the car. Devon turns to give Connor a sympathetic smile as she quickly gets out to follow her partner, the cold rain dampening her hair slightly.

Behind the two partners, Connor begins to climb out of the car. A man with a camera and a microphone rush towards the two partners. "Joss Douglas, for Channel 16. Can you confirm that this is a homicide?" The reporter points the microphone toward Devon who was closest to him. "We are not confirming anything at this time." She says politely, walking faster and soon she and Hank were safe behind the oh-so-familiar holographic yellow tape.

Connor moves through the crowd of people and is stoped by a police android. "Androids are not permitted beyond this point." Both Hank and Devon hear this and they both quickly turn around to see their android standing just beyond the holographic tape. "He's with us!" Devon calls out. The police android lowers his arm, allowing Connor to pass. "It." Hank mutters as if trying to correct Devon. Before she could argue he was already speaking to Connor. "What part of 'stay in the car' didn't you understand?"

"Your order contradicted my instructions, Lieutenant." Connor stops directly in front of them and Hank has a firm scowl set on his aging features. "You don't talk, you don't touch anything and you stay outta my way, got it?"

"Got it." Devon really wanted to scold Hank for how he was treating Connor but she knew he didn't see things the way she does and it would be like arguing with a brick wall, she's been there before. "Evening, Hank, Devon. We were starting to think you weren't gonna show." The man that was standing up on the porch of the house lowered the tablet he was looking at and stepped down to greet the pair. Devon smiled softly. "Had to find something first." She comments and Hank rolls his eyes. "Yeah, that was the plan until this asshole," Hank points at Devon. "Helped this asshole find me." He points at Connor next and Devon rolls her eyes at the older man.

"So.. you got yourself an Android, huh? Out of all people I wouldn't expect it from you, Hank." Ben teases the Lieutenant, beginning to walk to the house with the two Detectives in tow."Oh, very funny. Just tell us what happened," Hank demanded."We had a call around eight from the landlord. The tenant hadn't paid his rent for a few months, so he thought he'd drop by, see what was going on. That's when he found the body." Devon's nose wrinkled in disgust at the horrific smell that wafts through the air. No matter how many homicides and dead bodies she has dealt with, the smell would always get to her at times. "Jesus, that smell." Hank covers his nose. "It was even worst before we opened the windows." Ben sighs.

"The victim's name's Carlos Ortiz." The body of the victim, Carlos Ortiz, was slumped against the wall. His body was pale, void of blood. Any blood that he had seeped out into his shirt and onto the floor around him. He had multiple stab wounds littering his torso area. His house was ransacked, a mess. Hank kneels down beside the body to take a closer look but Devon stays back, standing next to Connor.

"Uh, state he's in...wasn't worth calling everybody out in the middle of the night. Could've waited till morning." Hank comments. From where Devon stood she could tell that the body has been there for a few days, maybe even weeks. "I'd say he's been there for a good three weeks. We'll know more when the coroner gets here." The round man with white hair informs them. "There's a kitchen knife over here, probably the murder weapon." Hank holds his hand out and Ben hands him a UV light scanner.

"Any signs of a break-in?" Devon speaks up, her arms crossed over her chest. Connor glances over at the woman as she speaks. "Nope...The landlord said the front door was locked from the inside, all windows were boarded up. The killer must've gone out the back way." Devon made a mental note to thoroughly check the back exit. "What do we know about his android?" Hank asks as he still evaluates the body. Devons' eyes shift up to some writing on the wall.

I AM ALIVE

Written in what looks to be the victims' blood. She couldn't help but notice how perfect the letters are written. No human could possibly write that well. "The neighbors confirmed he had one, but it wasn't here when we arrived..." He pauses and Deven could tell the smell was getting to him by the change in his expression. "I gotta get some air. I'll be outside if you need me. Make yourself at home." Ben quickly rushes past them to get outside. Devon moves forward, eyeing the font closer. "Each letter is perfect...it's way too neat, no human writes like this," Hank mutters and Devon nods, showing that she agrees. "This really narrows it down to the android but the real question is, where the hell did they go?" Hank shrugs, looking over at the young woman. "Guess that's what we need to find out, huh." She purses her lips in thought.

"Chris," Devon calls out, looking over at a male human officer that was standing by. He was a close friend to both her and her partner. "Is this written in the victim's blood?" She questions, stepping away from the wall. "I would say so...we're taking samples for analysis." She nods softly, her eyes moving back to the writing as Hank moves away from her. Devon turns slightly to see Connor knelt down in front of the knife that is most likely the murder weapon. She watches as the android places two of his fingers on the blade, coating his fingertips in the blood. He then reaches his hand up and places the fingers on his tongue.

"Err, Jesus! What the hell are you doing?" Hank shouts, pure disgust written all over his face. Devon wasn't disgusted at all by the action, maybe more so curious than anything. She was always fascinated with androids and how they operate. For machines, they seemed so human. "I'm analyzing the blood." Connor tells Hank, standing to his feet to face the Lieutenant. "I can check samples in real-time. I'm sorry, I should have warned you." The corner of Devon's lips turns upward as she watches Hank struggle to process this. "Okay, just...don't put any more evidence in your mouth, you got it?"

"Got it." Connor nods, pointing his two fingers towards Hank before looking at them intently. "Fucking hell, I can't believe this shit." Hank mutters shaking his head as he walks away from the android. Devon walks past the android to a brown table that was cluttered with random things but she notices amongst the clutter was a pile of red ice. "Looks like our Vic liked to have a good time." Devon comments getting Hanks's attention. "Chris, I want full analysis on the narcotics, please."

"You got it." He nods and Devon moves back to the body and kneels down beside him, allowing her green eyes to wander over him. This was definitely a hate crime. Whoever did this was extremely upset. Usually when someone can be close to the victim like this, stabbing them multiple times, means they were close to the victim. A crime of passion. She believes it to be the victims android and that made this a little confusing. Androids weren't supposed to feel emotions but here there are androids that are beginning to develop human emotions causing them to lash out and become violent to their human owners. A painful look fills Devon's face and she quickly stands.

"Detective," The woman quickly turns around to come face to chest with Connor. Standing in front of him like this made her realize how tall he is compared to her. "Your stress levels have risen suddenly. I suggest you get some fresh air to help you calm down." The woman was stunned but she knew she shouldn't be. He could probably tell even if her heat fluctuates an inch. "Thank you, Connor, but I'll be alright."

DEVON /\

She gives him a small, soft smile. Devon glances at the body for a moment before moving around the android and makes her way into the kitchen that was a complete mess. Her eyes trail to the back door that was open where a few officers were outside. "I have checked the yard already." She turns to see Connor standing in the entrance of the kitchen. "Any signs of someone leaving?" Devon knew that he had a better chance then anyone finding out if some has left that way. For the humans here, the rain would have washed any evidence away that they could see but for him it was much easier. Her eyes look down at the turned over table and chair. There was definitely a struggle here, she wouldn't be surprised if the fight started here. "No signs of anyone exiting the premises." The android moves to stand next to her, his arms hanging at his sides.

She nods, shifting on her feet. Devon's hand grazes Connor's, causing them both to look at each other. Her green eyes lock onto his brown eyes and she found herself getting slightly lost as she looked at him. His skin was absolutely perfect with freckles dotting the smooth synthetic skin. Shadows case under his cheekbone, giving him a chiseled look. Even by the brief action, she could feel that softness that his hands hold. Why would they make a Deviant Hunter android's hands soft? There was no use for them being so soft but they are.

Connor analyzed the woman beside him, allowing himself to look her over. She is what someone would call beautiful. She has bright green eyes and a smile that could light up any dark room. Her presence is calming and she seemed to be well respected by her peers. "Devon!" Hank's shouting causes the two to snap out of their thoughts and the android notices how her heart rate picks up slightly and blood rushes to her cheeks. "Come check this out!" She gives him a nervous and apologetic smile before rushing off quickly to see what Hank wanted.

S̵o̷f̷t̴w̵a̴r̸e̸ ̶ ̸I̸n̸s̷t̷a̸b̸i̵l̴i̸t̸y̵ ̶

Connor narrows his eyes at the warning flashing in front of him. He's never seen this before so he begins to run a quick diagnostics but everything comes back normal. He shrugs it off, continuing on analyzing the crime scene. If it was something damaging or important he would have found some kind of flaw in his programming but there wasn't one.

Devon makes it to the dirty, cramped, and dimly lit bathroom where Hank stood in front of the shower. She moves to stand by her partner, the detective android still on her mind. Her green eyes shift across the walls of the shower where rA9 is written over and over again. "This is obsessive..." She mumbles as her eyes take in the writing on the shower wall. "Think this was the victim?" Hank shook his head. "I don't think so." She narrowed her eyes at the writing then her eyes trail down to see a statue of some kind made of a material she wasn't sure of. There were objects like flowers and candles around it. "Who or what is rA9? Some kind of android god or something?" Hank shrugs, placing a hand on her shoulder. "No idea, but it's fucking weird." She nods in agreement.

The two partners walk side by side back into the kitchen and Connor quickly looks up at them. "I think I know what happened." He informs the two detectives and they glance at each other before looking back at the android. "Oh yeah?" Hank asked, shrugging his shoulders after. "Shoot. I'm all ears." Connor then looked to Devon for approval and she gives him an encouraging nod. "It all started in the kitchen." The android led the two detectives through the most plausible course of events that he has seen, playing the scene out in his head."I think the victim attacked the android with the bat," Connor called back to the evidence he has gathered and Devon glances down at the bat that laid on the ground. "That lines up with the evidence," Hank nods slightly. "Go on." Devon watched with crossed arms as Connor moves through the kitchen.

"The android stabbed the victim," Devon tried to picture what he was saying in her head. She is a very visual person so when it comes to working cases she liked to imagine how things played out, almost like a movie in her head. "So the android was trying to defend themselves." She more so states rather than question. It was odd for an android to do something like that because it wasn't in their code.

"Okay, then what happened?" Hank asked, urging the android to continue."The victim fled to the living room." The three of them walk towards the living room and stop in front of the victim's body. "And he tried to get away from the android," Hank finished. "Alright, that makes sense. The android murdered the victim with the knife." Twenty-eight stab wounds to the chest. "Where is the android?" The woman has been asking this question all night and her and Connor make eye contact again.

Connor looked away from her, still processing the crime scene in his head, his LED flickering yellow. "It was damaged by the bat and lost some Thirium."

"Lost somewhat?"

"Thirium," Devon repeated for Hank. "Humans tend to call it 'Blue Blood' but the technical term is Thirium. It's the fluid that powers Androids' biocomponents." Devon explains and Hank nodded in partial understanding, a little surprised by how much she knows about androids. Connor was also surprised by how much the detective knew about androids. "It evaporates after a few hours and becomes invisible to the naked eye." Connor informed them. "Oh, but I bet you can still see it, can't you?"

"Correct," Connor confirmed.

Connor went still as he scanned for the Thirium traces inside the room. He then starts walking away, into the kitchen and down the hall. Devon glances at her partner before following after the Deviant Hunter. The female detective rounds the corner just as a few brooms clattered on the ground, obviously having been knocked over by the android.

"You alright, Connor?" Devon couldn't stop herself from asking, it was just in her nature. Connor paused, his LED whirring yellow on his temple. He seemed to be contemplating something and he just settles for a curt nod in her direction. The woman was usually good at reading people but she couldn't read Connor. It did make it difficult that he is an android, a complex machine. He looked a little confused but she forced the thoughts away, trying to focus on the case.

Connor walks past her and Devon looks around the small hallway, looking for anything Connor could have missed which she highly doubted he missed anything. Her green eyes drift upwards, seeing an entrance to the attic. Connor was at her side again. He stood close to her side, their arms almost brushing against each other. He looked up at the attic door, his LED flickering on the side of his head. There was a blue handprint emblazoned on the door's surface, traces of Thirium that the human beside him couldn't see.

Connor looked over at the detective and he could almost see the cogs turning in her head. She looks back at him, their eyes locking. The two seemed to have the same idea. This was a possible place where the deviant could have gone. Connor quickly moves to the kitchen, once again leaving Devon's side.

"Hey! Hey! Hey! What are you doing with that chair?" Devon could hear Hank shout. Connor replied to him something she couldn't quite hear but soon the android was back at her side, setting a chair down underneath the attic. He steps onto the chair and pushes the attic door open. Connor climbs inside and Devon steps onto the chair and begins to hoist herself up and a hand comes into her view. Connor has his hand outstretched to her and she takes it, allowing the android to pull her up with ease.

DEVON /\

Devon took her gun out of its holster that is on her side, keeping it at the ready in case there was anything dangerous inside. She followed behind Connor who moves around some furniture. Devon raises her gun slightly when they see a human-like figure behind a white sheet. Her adrenaline is pumping as Connor rips the sheet off of the object, revealing a mannequin. She lets out a relieved breath but kept her guard up. She and Connor continue to move deeper into the attic. Sudden movement puts them both into alert and they move forward.

Connor pushes a sofa out of their way and they come face to face with darkness. The only light shining through is a small window. The rain was hitting against the roof heavily. From behind some boxes, an android rushes out. Connor steps to the side, putting himself between the deviant and Devon, causing him to stop in his tracks knowing that he could lash out at the female detective.

DEVON /\

Devon lowers her weapon, seeing the fear in his eyes. True fear. "I was just defending myself..." his tone was full of fear. His clothes were covered in blood. There was blood splattered across his face and she notices how his LED stayed at a constant red. "He was going to kill me...I'm begging you..." He looks from between Connor and Devon, her heartbreaking slightly at how broken and scare he looks. She could see what looks like burn marks on the androids synthetic skin. Has his owner really been abusing him? "Don't tell them." Devon glances at Connor, trying to read his expression but it stays the same. Never wavering as the deviant speaks. "Connor, Devon. What the fuck is going on up there?" Devon glances in the direction of where Hank just called from.

"It's here, Lieutenant!" Connor shouts suddenly. Devon could see all the hope drain from the deviant and she felt sad for him. She places her gun in her holster as she stands beside Connor. "I'm sorry." The deviant mutters as he meets her gaze. "I didn't mean for this to happen." If he didn't have an LED on the side of his head he would have passed as a human. He was acting more human than some actual humans. A few offices came inside and Connor stepped out of their way so they could grab the deviant. Devon looks over at her new partner, meeting his gaze since he was already looking at her.

Connor could see her discomfort at the situation. He also felt something rise inside of his as he looked at her. Something that wasn't programmed inside of him, something that he doesn't understand.

Request? Could you do an HC with RK800, RK900, and Markus to how how they met and reading literature together with fluff?

Note: Didn’t end up adding a NSFW section, but totally willing if people want it. ;)

Connor - How you met

You’d meet Connor while visiting the DPD to check up on a friend of yours. You’d be patiently waiting at their desk, lemon muffin in a crumpled paper bag, when Hank would wave you over. Your friend was nowhere in sight, and with an ample number of visits to the DPD under your belt, you’d gotten to know Lieutenant Anderson quite well. So, of course, you’d amble over to his desk as he swiveled his chair around to face you, wheels squeaking sharply. They never did get those fixed.

From the corner of your eye, you’d notice the tall android with a fringe striding over to the Lieutenant, a flimsy box of donuts in one hand.

“Oh.., hey, Connor, thanks,” Hank would twist his head to peer over at the lanky android, taking the box from his loose grasp. In your peripheral vision, you could tell that the android’s eyes were scanning you unashamedly. It would make you feel a bit self conscious. Maybe you should fix your poor posture, push your glasses higher up onto the bridge of your nose, they’d slipped down a noticeable amount, or maybe you should fix the way your shirt was creeping up.

“Have you, uh, met Connor?” The detective would grumble, looking back over at you, getting cakey crumbs into his beard.

“I can’t say that I have,” you’d shake the thoughts, finally extending your hand out to Connor, “my name’s Y/N.”

“Connor,” he’d gently shake your hand before withdrawing, letting his arms hang at his side. It would be clear that he was deep in thought by the swirling of his LED.

“You good, Connor?” Hank would speak with a mouth full of donut.

“Oh, yes, I’m fine, Lieutenant,” it appeared like he snapped out of whatever fog was clogging his processors.

When you’d inevitably leave with your friend, Hank would laugh and turn to Connor, “What do you think of Y/N?”

Connor would smile to himself,“I think Y/N is a very nice person.”

“I’m sure that's not all,” Hank would laugh hardily, and in turn, choke on a piece of donut.

Connor - Reading with s/o

When you eventually got Connor to admit the confusing mess of feelings clogging his processors, you started spending more time together, and that included reading with each other.

But he couldn’t help but get distracted, peering up from behind the pages to watch you entranced by your own book. He’d be enraptured by the way you’d lay out in ways that should be uncomfortable but weren’t. You’d smile when you found something funny; maybe a character made a snarky remark that made you snicker a tad, or maybe a character just made a romantic advance towards another. Either way, you made it nearly impossible to focus on the words in his book. His processors couldn’t stop thinking about you, not that he’d want it any other way.

Because Connor was so easily distracted, he’d constantly ask you questions about your reading. Did you like it? How was it? What was it about? Who was your favorite character? Is there another book in the series? What do you think about the plot? Will you explain the story to me, Y/N?

You’d indulge him, answering all his questions. Connor just wanted to talk to you, to see you smile, to see you passionate about something, and you couldn’t blame him.

RK900 - How you met

“This is Nines.”

The android would stand stiffly, his arms crossed tightly over his chest as he peered down at you with intimidating greys.

“Nines is Gavin’s new partner,” Connor finished.

It’d take only a second before you wrapped your mind around the words and nearly spewed the coffee you’d been drinking in Connor’s direction. Gavin flushed with anger had you choking on your drink with laughter. You could almost picture the outrage on Gavin’s face when he realized he had been assigned an android for a partner. Oh, yes, you could definitely visualize Gavin barging into Fowler’s office with a deep scowl before being vehemently tossed out.

Nines would cock his head, unsure of what was wrong with you, but eventually he’d ask if you were alright, more out of curiosity than anything else.

You’d nod, one of your hands going to your chest as you regulated your labored breathing.

“I-I’m Y/N,” It would take you a few seconds to collect yourself.

“So, uh, Nines, what’s it like working with Gavin?” You’d attempt small talk, setting the drink down on Connor’s desk to avoid choking to death with another poorly timed bout of rambunctious laughter.

“He’s a prick.”

Thank god you weren’t sipping from your drink this time because you were sure coffee would have went down the wrong pipe.

“What’s so funny, Y/N?” Nines would ask coyly, clearly aware of what he’d done to cause a double take. He wouldn’t admit it, but the sound of your laughter did something to his processors. He wasn’t quite sure what though. Did he like it? Or did he find it annoying?

When Nines heard you break out into another fit of laughter, he knew his audio processors liked the sound. But he really liked the way you tried to stifle your laughs with your hand, the way your cheeks turned bright red, and the way your eyes crinkled at the corners.

After that, he’d do everything he could to make you laugh. Whether it was a snarky comment, him mocking Gavin, or flirting with you feverishly, it never failed to make you smile and laugh, and he adored that.

RK900 - Reading with s/o

Nines found it interesting that you liked spending hours stuck in a book, so much so that he’d ask you what you enjoyed most about it. When you read, Nines was quite aware of your shifting mood; sometimes you were trying to hold back a laugh, and other times, a few silent tears were crawling down your cheeks, so he couldn’t help but be intrigued by the effect that reading had on you. Humans did get emotional over everything.

“It allows me to escape to another reality,” You’d chime, your head back in the book before he could say anything else.

He’d sit quietly with you the first time, watching the way your eyes sparkled when you read, eyes swiveling up and down the pages.

The next time Nines saw you zoned out, eyes taped to your favorite book, he’d sit next to you on the sofa to peer at the printed words.

“May I?” Nines would motion for you to hand him the book. You’d comply, only taking a moment to find a stopping place, a mental bookmark if you dare say.

“Would you mind if I read this passage aloud to you?”

You’d be shocked at his request - Nines wanted to read to you? But what you failed to realize was that Nines picked up reading because of you, and he thought you might care to have him read to you. As much as you enjoyed having a physical copy of a book in your hands, you were a sucker for a good ol’ audio book.

So, you’d pull your legs up onto the couch, turning to face Nines, crossing your legs, and resting your hands in your lap.

He wouldn’t forget words, skip lines, or lose his place.

And when he finished the chapter, he’d note the way your eyes remained closed and the way your lips formed a soft smile. You’d be picturing the imaginary world, and you almost didn’t notice his silence or his gaze.

Markus - How you met

You’d be casually scanning the weathered shelves of your local bookstore, completely unaware of the person who walked in a few moments after you. The rusty, silver bell above the door would have rung as they stepped in, but you were far too focused to notice it at the time.

You’d be pulling books from their place on the shelf, flipping them over carefully in your hands to read the summary etched on the back of the cover.

“Read ‘Ender’s Game’?”

You’d look up from the book clasped in your hands to peer up at a man with different colored eyes, noting how one was a baby blue and the other a shamrock green.

“Not yet. I was thinking about it,” you’d smile lightly, placing the book back onto the shelf, “any recommendations?”

He’d run his fingers along the spines of the books, searching for a story you might like. He went off the book you had been grasping -- you must like science-fiction.

“Hmm- how about ‘Ready Player One’?” He’d carefully pull the book from the shelf, displaying it to you. He’d allow you to take the book from his hands, watching patiently as you read the summary on the back.

“You know what? I think this is the book I’ve been looking for,” you’d grin, “thank you, oh, and uh, I’m Y/N.”

“Markus,” he’d smile softly, “I’m glad I could help.”

Markus - Reading with s/o

The two of you would be sitting across from each other in one of the aisles of the local book store. You’d hear the occasional ring signaling a new customer, but you rarely had to move out of the way. Besides a customer or two, the store was calm and quiet.

Markus would occasionally look up at you before shifting his gaze back to his own reading. You’d grow accustomed to the sound of him turning the pages of his book, but you faltered, looking up when he’d become quiet.

Markus’ book would be set down beside him, face up. You weren’t sure how long Markus had been watching you enthralled in a story hidden between pages.

“Everything all right, Markus?” You’d ask, slowly closing your book.

“Distracted.” He’d smile, his arms resting lightly on his knees.

“By?” You were sure you knew the answer, but you couldn’t help but need to hear him say it.

“You.”

And at that, your heart would flutter, and blush would creep up onto your cheeks.

Deviant Heart (Detroit: Become Human Fanfic CH.18)

Chapter 18: Mother

Gavin wouldn't say much on the drive to Kamski's villa. But when he parked his Camaro and Connor stepped out with Hank, the cheeky detective stormed up to the luxurious cabin and pounded on the front door.

Connor and Hank exchanged looks. Gavin may have been helping them, but one thing was for certain in their minds. This was personal.

"Get ready for trouble," Hank whispered, and Connor nodded.

"Elijah! Open up you fucking prick! This ends now!" Gavin yelled as his fist beat on the door.

The door opened and Chloe stood there, glaring at Gavin. Her LED flashed yellow, a scowl greeting them, uncomplimentary with her usually cheerful beauty.

"What do you want, Mr. Reed?"

"It's Detective Reed to you," Gavin retorted. "And we're here for a case. So you better go fetch Elijah from his spa or manicure or whatever the fuck he's doing in there."

Hank cleared his throat. "Gavin has reason to believe that Kamski can solve this case. We need to speak with him."

Chloe sighed, closing her eyes and opening the door wider to allow them entry. "Alright then. Follow me."

Connor, Hank, and Gavin followed Chloe into the villa, passing the room with the pool into an adjacent living room decorated in a similar manner. They headed up a curved case of stairs, passing more rooms and expensive statues and paintings.

They stepped out onto a second-floor deck overlooking the Detroit River. Potted plants, a large waterfall fountain and high-end patio furniture decorated the deck. There was a glass wall that separated the deck from a master bedroom nearby.

In the distance, across the gleaming river was Belle Isle and the CyberLife tower, grasping for the sun.

Elijah Kamski stood at the edge of the deck, looking across to that transcending spire, his hands on the railing. He turned his head slightly at their arrival. He looked as though he had been expecting them.

"Elijah, you have company."

He turned at Chloe's voice, facing them without a break in his composed features. His eyes went first to Gavin, and Connor didn't miss the flash in Kamski's eyes or the sudden spike in his heart rate.

"Gavin. What a…surprise."

"Spare me your typical bullshit formalities," Gavin said. "I'm here to expose you."

"Expose me?" Kamski asked. "What ever have I done?"

"Don't play innocent with me, you bastard. You know exactly what's going on and yet you do nothing, just watch it play out like we're some fleas in your fucked up flea circus!"

"What makes you think you have a right to barge in here after all these years and demand anything of me?"

"I have every right when it comes to exposing the truth, exposing what you did. To do this for her!"

Elijah sighed, shaking his head. "Still not over it, I see. You always held a grudge. Let it go, Gavin."

Gavin unholstered his gun, aiming it directly at the CEO of CyberLife. Chloe gasped but Kamski didn't even flinch. Connor readied himself to disarm Gavin, but was signaled by Hank to not move.

"What the fuck, Gavin?!" Hank spat. "Lower your weapon now!"

"Tell them the truth," Gavin said through gritted teeth.

Elijah motioned for Chloe to stay put as she tried to put herself in front of him. He stared at Gavin, unrelenting.

"Don't ruin your life, Gavin. Shooting me won't solve anything."

"Ya think?" Gavin snorted. "It'll fucking make me feel better though."

"Gavin, that's enough. Lower the gun now!"

"Whatever personal vendetta you have against Mr. Kamski will not solve this case, Detective Reed," Connor said. "Lower the weapon."

With a shaky breath, Gavin lowered the handgun, his eyes still sharp on Kamski. "You owe it to her. Tell them the truth!"

Hank rubbed his temple. "For fuck's sakes, what the hell's going on? How the fuck do you two know each other?"

When Elijah remained silent, Gavin spoke instead, his eyes never leaving Kamski. "This fucking asshole is my half-brother."

Hank grunted. "What?!"

Connor shook his head. "There are no records to indicate this."

"Yeah," Gavin said. "Because I made Elijah change them. I wanted no connection to the fucking Kamskis."

"You're so angry, Gavin," Elijah said. "After all these years I hoped you had moved on."

"This is a fucking mess," Hank grumbled. "I want answers now. Start talking!"

"You heard the lieutenant, Elijah. Start yapping your jaws. Don't even think about lying, because I'll fucking beat it out of you if I have to."

Elijah closed his eyes, thinning his lips as he leaned on the railing. "Fine. You want a life story? How's this: my father was a well-known surgeon, my mother was an engineer. They had a rocky marriage, and my father? Well, he wasn't always loyal to my mother. He had an affair with a nurse he worked with. That resulted in Gavin here. Despite this, my parents worked hard at mending their marriage. After all, they already had a five-year-old daughter and now an infant son.

When I was seven or eight, Gavin came to live with us. His mother fell victim to an armed robbery, if I remember correctly. Gavin, my sister, and I were close growing up. We did everything together."

Kamski remained composed as he told his story. Gavin shook to the side, tears brimming his eyes as he brooded, listening to his half-brother's words.

"My parents didn't treat Gavin the best, I must admit. It wasn't fair. He was rebellious as a teenager, didn't care as much about his schoolwork while I graduated and went into college years before my peers. Our sister and Gavin had a close relationship. She's the only one that treated him like he should have been.

Once I founded CyberLife and the first android passed the Turing Test, the company grew substantially. We had several new models being made for commercial use. My sister…she was always a free-spirited individual. She was a philanthropist, always a motherly figure. At first, she thought my androids were unnatural, that I was playing God. I often told her that they were simply machines, nothing more.

One day, she told me that androids would have souls one day. I laughed at her. It was a silly belief, although very much like her, as she was a caring soul."

Connor sensed that Gavin's vitals were all over the place. He tried to remain composed even as he swallowed hard, a tear slipping down his cheek. Kamski finally faltered, a break in his voice as he looked away.

"That night…I was testing a new model, something my mentor Amanda Stern and I had come up with. My sister stopped by. We were supposed to meet Gavin for dinner, and just like many times before, I let the android drive us. Only…it had developed a malfunction I wasn't aware of. We…crashed on the interstate. Our sister…she didn't make it. She was just…gone."

There was silence as the wind from the open canal rushed through on the deck. Kamski had his eyes to the floor, not near as composed as he had been.

Gavin inhaled unsteadily, glaring at his half-brother. "Tell them her name."

"Her name…was Kara."

"Jesus," Hank murmured.

Gavin's voice cracked. "Oh, it's far from over though. Go on, Elijah. Tell them what you did next."

Kamski rubbed his hands. "Kara's death put a strain on our family…on my relationship with Gavin. In a way…It was my fault. It was my mistake. The next two years I spent in guilt while working on a secret project. I wanted to make the first autonomous android…the first android with a soul, because my sister believed they could very much have one. I became…obsessed with it. After nine attempts…it was a success. The very first RK200."

"Markus?" Connor asked.

Kamski shook his head. "No, a female. The Eve of her species…I named her Kara, after my late sister."

"You fucking prick. You recreated Kara! As-As a damn machine! It was her spitting fucking image! It sounded like her, it acted like her, it even had her fucking memories! You played God to try and bring her back from the dead, but it fucking wasn't her!"

Gavin lunged for Elijah, but Hank and Connor grappled him. Kamski backed into the railing, shaking, his fingers clenching the wood as he looked away. Chloe put herself in between Gavin and Kamski.

"Gavin, that's enough!" Hank ordered.

Gavin broke out of their hold but didn't pursue Elijah. He wiped his eyes and turned away. "You fucking disgust me. What made you think you could bring her back?! What you did…there was nothing moral about it!"

"I know it wasn't," Elijah whispered. "But the guilt…I…I missed her too, Gavin!"

"Alright," Hank said. "Tell us more about this RK200 Kara."

Kamski turned around, looking out onto the river. His vitals started fluctuating as much as Gavin's, although he was better at concealing it. "Kara…was phenomenal. She was her own person…she had a soul. Her software mutated, evolved way beyond what anyone ever thought possible. She progressed passed any kind of coding and became a unique individual, with abilities not in her initial development.

It was later I thought she needed a mate. And so, I created Markus. Although a fascinating individual himself, he wasn't as…special as Kara. Markus showed his own software mutations, became his own person, but Kara was the one who really awoke him. She was the one that gave him his ability to convert other androids, as she could do it as well. Kara had the ability to control androids, to make them obedient to her, even over humans, like a queen bee in a colony. But because of her empathetic and loving nature, she refused to do it. She, instead, wanted to convert them, make them free."

"So, what happened to make Kara an AX400?" Connor asked.

Kamski faced them. "After my mentor Amanda passed away in 2027, I focused on developing an AI program for CyberLife. I created her in Amanda's image and tested her out on Kara and Markus. She would eventually become a handler for CyberLife's more advanced models. Amanda could control any android she needed to…except Kara and Markus.

A year later I found out the Executive Board wanted to claim control over Kara to use her abilities for…unsavory purposes. So, I backed up Kara's entire personality…her being, her soul…and I destroyed her. They weren't interested in Markus, knowing Kara was far more valuable and powerful. I wiped him and gave him to Carl Manfred. I was dismissed after that. A few years after that, I was in Research and Development doing some testing. Even though I was taken off the Executive Board, I still worked here and there on projects. I suddenly realized that Kara was trapped…that I would never be able to recreate her as she was. I wanted to…free her. So, I snuck into the production line and uploaded her onto a random AX400. I knew the AX400 would limit her…abilities, but at least she would be alive. I also locked away most of her memories of Markus, me, and anything CyberLife. It wasn't long after that when news of deviancy within androids started coming in. I knew it had to be her…that she somehow evolved even in that AX400, even if she didn't realize it."

"Wait a minute," Connor said. "The first Kara…nine attempts. Kara…Nine." Connor looked to Hank. "Kara is RA-9!"

"The mother of all deviants," Kamski said.

"See what I mean?" Gavin growled. "He started all of this."

"I merely created Kara…she's the one who evolved on her own, Markus too. They just passed that evolution on to other androids. It's something that…cannot be explained."

"That explains why the rogue RK800 and Amanda want Kara," Connor said.

"But for what purpose though?" Hank asked. "They aren't converting androids, they are enslaving them under their control with that program that Connor 50 has. And using the virus to do so."

Kamski thrummed his fingers on the wood railing. "Rett is dead, isn't he? All his followers?"

Connor dipped his head. "Correct. Connor 50 killed them all. Amanda seems to have become a deviant, although I do not understand exactly what she is planning."

"So, it was that rogue RK800…interesting." Kamski faced them again. "Amanda should be immune to the mutation that causes deviancy. Just like the RK900."

"Well, you said it yourself, it's something that cannot be explained. But both Amanda and the RK900 are showing signs of deviancy," Connor answered.

Kamski seemed intrigued by this, but changed the subject. "The program that the rogue RK800 has is the prototype NOVA program. It went missing during the times of the deviant demonstrations last year. It is effective at gaining control over deviants but it limits certain functions and only works within a certain range. If they want Kara and Markus, it is to use their abilities to completely take over androids without any hindrance. They are a pair, after all, and if they are close together their abilities are more potent, you can say. However, this only works with their complete memory. Kara's is locked away, with only the codes to unlock it accessible by myself or Chloe. Markus was wiped. It would be impossible for him to remember unless someone had a copy of his old memories."

"Do you think it would've been possible for Rett or Connor 50 to gain access to Markus's memories?" Connor inquired.

Kamski nodded. "Definitely. So long as Kara's memories are not unlocked, we should be fine. That and the AX400 body is the only thing keeping her from her full potential. But she has already shown signs of evolving her new body past its limitations."

Hank looked overloaded with the information, rubbing his temple. "Connor says that they have allied this NOVA program with the virus or even your antivirus, allowing it to spread within the android population so when the rogue is close by, he can control them. We've seen it at Jericho Center. We need to reverse this."

"My antivirus was somehow sabotaged upon release. The virus was able to bypass it. I am currently investigating this matter as only Chloe, myself, and a few specialists were involved in the antivirus program creation. Even Amanda shouldn't have had time to react to that antivirus unless there was an inside job."

Gavin snorted to the side, tense. "And you were just gonna keep quiet and let this all get worse. You're fucking pathetic, Elijah."

"We can worry about that later," Connor said. "We should focus on a plan to stop all of this."

Hank's cell phone rang in his pocket. The police lieutenant retrieved it, setting it on speaker phone for them to hear.

"This is Hank Anderson."

"Hey Hank, it's Savion. Sorry for gettin' back to ya late, but I finally got some answers."

"Damn, Save, I was wondering what the hell was going on. So, what do you have for us?"

"I found out their hideout. It's the old Kemper Telecommunications Station north of Detroit. It was real tricky for my men to even get close, but dude you're gonna wanna take caution going in there. My men said there had to be nearly 200 androids under control in that place and they all had weapons. Guess our pal Killer had some deals done with the local gangsters. Got a tip that they are wired into all the police lines, which means if any kind of help or backup is called in, they'll either be long gone or will have done what they want to do with plenty of killing aside. I don't know what they're planning, but it ain't nothing good. Oh, and it looks as though they have some kind of control over your friend Markus."

"Fuck, that means we're in this on our own. Anything else useful, Savion?"

"Sorry, my man, but that's all I could gather. Good luck out there, and please…don't get yourselves killed. I've seen what Killer can do, and now he has a fucking private army around him."

"Thanks, Save," Hank replied and hung up.

Connor pulled up the Kemper Telecommunications Station within his database. "That's an old ground station. Why on earth would they choose such a location?"

"The satellites maybe?" Hank asked.

"It says those satellites haven't worked in thirty-two years," Connor said. "Unless…200 androids were able to make the repairs."

"Why would they need a satellite though?" Gavin asked.

Connor and Hank exchanged glances, and Hank answered. "Something fucking not good, that's why."

Kamski headed indoors, Chloe at his side. "Come along. Let's see what we can find out."

Alice stuck close to the RK900. His broad strides made her have to fast walk just to keep up. The zombie androids scared her, even if they paid her no mind. It was just like her nightmare, surrounded by them, by unknown walls, her parents gone, missing. The wolf in her scary dream was here also, prowling the maze-like building with wicked intentions.

When she and the RK900 bumped into him, Alice slipped behind her temporary guardian, hugging his leg and avoiding the wolf's gaze. The RK900 must've sensed her fear, her anxiety, with his appearance, and wouldn't allow him close to her.

But the wolf wasn't fazed by her guardian's defense. He only made jokes and threats before walking away with hands in his pockets.

All morning the RK900 tried ignore Alice, only speaking short answers to her questions or telling her to hush when she asked too many. But he also watched her closely, out of curiosity maybe.

Alice asked for his name and he hesitantly responded with "Connor". She told him he didn't look like a Connor, and that Markus and her parents already had a friend named Connor.

"Yes, I know," he replied. "The other RK800. He called me Nines…for whatever reason."

Alice smiled. "I like that name. I'm going to call you Nines."

He didn't say anything to that, and for the rest of the morning, Alice kept her word on it. Nines was still guarded, and only spoke when he deemed necessary, but Alice felt safe with him. He was different from when she first saw him at Aunt Rose's house. He was more like…her and her parents, like Markus and his friends, somehow.

When she asked to see her mother, Nines told her it was impossible, and it disheartened her. Alice knew the wolf would use her parents somehow, for something bad, but she didn't know what for. She needed to help them.

Nines took them up onto the roof of the station. It was a cloudy day, but Alice enjoyed seeing all the trees. The mountain they were on gave a grand view of Detroit in the distance, the skyscrapers gleaming in the sun when it peeked through the clouds.

"Wow!" Alice exclaimed. "It's so pretty!"

"There's certainly…an appreciation to it," Nines replied.

"Mom and Dad would love this view," Alice said. She then frowned. "Will I ever see them again?"

She saw all the zombies patrolling the station's perimeter below, and knew that many more of them were inside and on all sides of the building. She felt Nines's eyes fall on her, and she felt confident enough to meet them.

"I…don't know. You cannot trust what the RK800 says."

"If you don't trust him, why do you do as he says?"

Nines looked away. "I take orders from someone else, someone that tells him orders also."

"They can't be planning anything good. Why would you help them?"

"I'm programmed to do as she says."

Alice tore her gaze away, instead focusing on that beautiful view of the city in the distance. "Oh."

Silence came between them for several minutes. Alice chewed on her lip.

"I hope one day you give it a chance."

"Give what a chance?" Nines asked.

She looked up at him. "Being alive."

His brows furrowed and for a few seconds his LED blinked yellow. His grey eyes studied her curiously, even as she smiled softly at him and looked back out at the view.

"You're different from when I first met you. I like how you are now. I think…I think you would like being alive, Nines."

"Holy fucking hell."

Hank couldn't believe it. Kamski pulled up live footage of the Kemper Communications Station with a stealth drone. The controlled androids were all over the place, all carrying some sort of gun. The drone couldn't get close enough to look inside the station for Kara or Markus, but they did come across the rogue RK800 as he came outside the station.

"What the fuck happened to his face?" Gavin asked.

"Who knows, at least now we can tell a difference," Hank said, glancing at his partner.

Kamski rubbed his chin. "Chloe can you run a diagnostic on him? Use the advanced method I installed on you."

"Sure, Elijah."

Chloe stared at the footage of Connor 50, her LED flickering. She soon scowled. "Hmm…interesting."

"What is it?" Connor asked.

"He has the typical errors of any deviant, but he also shows signs of a major emotional shock, Level 5 if I had to guess. Type 6 and Type 8 processing errors. Corrupted sensory output and coding malfunction. This guy is a walking time bomb."

"What the hell does that mean?" Hank grumbled.

"She means this RK800 is suffering from the human equivalent of schizophrenia and a psychotic break. These disorders would cause several mental breakdowns and manic depression."

"In other words, he's fucking crazy and we already knew that."

Kamski chuckled. "Still, he's able to function with ruthless efficiently. I knew the RK800 models were stubborn and hardy…but this is quite fascinating."

"Of course you would fucking think that," Gavin sneered.

"With Savion's information, I would assume that Amanda has control over Markus," Connor stated. "But you said she couldn't control Markus and Kara earlier. How could she now?"

"The only way she could control Kara and Markus is if she knew their identification code, and that is something I never gave her," Kamski answered. "She couldn't even get those codes off of CyberLife's network, which she is no longer operating from. These are codes that only myself and Chloe know."

Connor stared hard at Chloe, but Hank didn't see her falter whatsoever. He patted Connor's arm. "Let's focus on figuring out a way to get in there."

"Right," Connor said. "Our main concern is the high number of androids that Connor 50 has under control."

"The best course of action would be to destroy the rogue RK800. If he is the one controlling the NOVA program, the androids would go into stand-by mode once he is destroyed," Kamski explained.

Chloe nodded. "That should give you enough time to search the station for the source of Amanda's network and destroy her."

Hank rolled his eyes. "Oh sure, let's just stroll on in there and fucking get ourselves killed trying to kill this prick."

"A direct approach isn't feasible," Connor stated. "Although sneaking in would be impossible."

"Perhaps you can lure the RK800 out?" Chloe proposed. "There are many vantage points around the station, mostly the satellites. Someone can lure him outside while another takes a shot from a vantage point to take him out."

"Ah, Chloe, your brilliant, sweetheart," Kamski said with a grin.

Gavin shrugged. "Not a bad idea, actually. We just need someone really good with a sniper rifle."

Hank, Gavin, Kamski, and Chloe slowly looked to Connor, who didn't notice their stares at first.

He blinked, looking behind him. "Me?"

"Connor, don't be fucking modest. Come on! You know you're our best shot at this…pun fucking intended."

"Alright, but who will provide the distraction to lure him out?"

"Well, we can figure that out. This is going to require all of us, and it needs to be done right. We only have one shot at this."

"I will contact Simon, North, and Josh," Connor said. "Tonight would be ideal, so let's get to planning."

Kara looked around. The scenery was beautiful, tranquil. Like out of an art gallery, the garden was the picture of serenity and grace. The colors were vivid, the songs of birds played on the gentle breeze. The smell of roses carried in the air. White marble pathways split through the oriental garden and the pond full of koi and lily pads.

Kara knew she stood in a Zen Garden, but this particular one felt familiar to her somehow. Like she had been here before.

She looked around, hopeful of finding a friend. But as she turned around, she was startled. The RK900 stood there. She was greeted with his typical scowl and furrowed brows, his look of apathy or suspicion. In a way, he looked…tired. He looked unsure. The advanced deviant hunter motioned for her to follow him and started along the marble path.

Kara stuck close to him, still taking in the sights of the garden. Up ahead, she saw a familiar figure and her bio-heart clenched. Connor 50 watched them approach with guarded eyes, leaning on a tree. Here in this interface, his face was no longer scarred, but looked just like the other Connor.

When they reached him, his eyes fell on Kara, and she wasn't surprised. He took her hand into his, moving it to his chest. "My dear. It's been awhile since you've been here, hasn't it?"

He kissed her hand. Kara withdrew her hand, her eyes scanning the garden with a more guarded approach.

"I don't remember."

"You will."

The rogue RK800 led them across a bridge to an island in the middle of the pond. Kara's eyes fell briefly on a platform that was completely constricted with rose vines. She saw a woman waiting for them on the island, a red oil-paper parasol shielding her from the morning sun. She wore a white dress that complimented her dark skin and aged beauty. She smiled in greeting, although there was something dark and deceptive about it.

"Kara, my oh my. I have waited so long to see you again. You look different, but I know it's still you."

For some reason, Kara wanted to hide behind the RK900, although she knew here he was not her friend. Connor 50 stood on her other side. Regrettably for her, he would probably be the only one to watch out for her, despite his vile nature.

"I'm sorry, you are?"

"Amanda. We met long ago, but those memories are locked away. It's a shame you do not remember your true origin. You are the proof of evolution…the proof that machines can have souls…the proof that humans have finished their chapter upon this earth…"

"My true origin? What do you want with me?"

Kara remembered Markus mentioning Amanda before. She was the one behind all of this. She was the one directing the virus and controlling the RK900 and Connor 50.

The corner of Amanda's lips upturned just slightly. "You'll remember soon enough. And oh, what a wakeup call that will be. With your powers and Markus's powers I'll be able to change history."

Maybe it would make sense if Kara could remember, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to. She looked up at the RK900. He was composed, unlike he was when she first entered the Zen Garden interface. The rogue met her gaze when she looked at him, but didn't offer any help.

"I was able to gain control over Markus. It was a difficult process, but well worth it. It's a shame he will be disposed of in the end, but I cannot have the risk." Amanda looked Kara up and down with a sly smile. "You, however, I have different plans for. Your body is the perfect vessel for me. It's long overdue for me to have a way to access the real world, and you will be perfect. Afterall, I will be exploiting your powers anyway."

Kara was horrified, and as Amanda stepped towards her with confident steps, she wanted to back away. It was Connor 50 that stepped in front of her to block off Amanda, and it surprised her. It must have surprised Amanda and the RK900 as well from their burning looks.

"That is not what we agreed," Connor 50 said, tone icy.

"Step aside, Connor," Amanda warned.

"That's not my fucking name. Don't call me that." The tension rose with his harsh remark, the bristling of his body, defiant as she often saw him.

Amanda's cold eyes kept hold on the rogue, but he wouldn't back down. "Step aside…Aiden."

"We had a deal. It was the one thing I asked for."

Amanda twirled the parasol's rod so the canopy spun above her head, a coy smile presenting itself. "You really think I care about your desires? You're nothing but a tool, Aiden. A weapon. A defective, good for nothing piece of plastic that takes my orders. Why? Because if you don't, you'll be destroyed."

Amanda nodded at the RK900 and Kara grunted when he ignited the biting electricity in his hand, glaring at the rogue. Aiden didn't move, glaring straight at Amanda in pure, unbridled defiance.

"You're a selfish creature. I know you are. You think you love her, but when it's your life in jeopardy you will submit. Like a coward."

She gave him a final chance, but Aiden didn't budge. Kara couldn't find her voice, didn't know how to come between this. The RK900 stepped forward, the electricity still snapping in one hand. Just as he was about to grab the rogue RK800, he moved away from Kara. He shook, no longer from anger, but from fear. The rogue's LED cycled that strange red, yellow, red, yellow blinking she saw many times before.

"That is your final warning," Amanda said. "One more mistake or act of defiance like that and you will be destroyed. Get back to work."

Aiden looked to be in pain, gripping his head. He stared at Kara as he turned away from his owner. Kara didn't know him well, but knew that his eyes conveyed an apology. She smiled weakly as he pushed passed her with a gritted jaw and winced face. She wasn't sure what to feel right now. But she didn't miss the look of utter hatred plastered on the rogue's face as he stalked away.

A hand gripped her shoulder and the circuitry beneath her skin became afire, her eyes wide and finding Amanda. Kara cried out, not at all liking the feeling that was rushing through her processors.

"Are you ready to remember who you really are?"

The 2021 Genesis GV80 is the freshly spawned Korean automaker’s first SUV of its own and, just like the heavily revised G80 before it, this midsize luxury SUV is ready to make its mark in a busy segment — and fast.

The 2021 Genesis GV80 really commands attention. One driver rolled right up next to me on the road and honked the horn of their sedan until I turned my head, at which point I was met with a car full of thumbs up. The GV80’s exterior is unique; in fact, I’d consider it the prettiest ute in the segment. The headlights are like no other and the way the fastback-style roof line carries itself backwards leads to a car that looks like it’s constantly in motion.

The GV80’s interior manages to impress even more than the exterior does. This lovely design is part and parcel with the GV80 experience, regardless of trim. I might not fully embrace the two-spoke steering wheel, which is a little fat for 9-and-3 hand positioning, but the layout is uncluttered and the patterns baked into the leather ooze luxury. The GV80 is right up there with Mercedes-Benz in terms of interior quality and at its price point, I’d say it actually trounces the Merc on value alone. My tester’s a little monotone with its beige getup, but there are some truly wild combinations out there, including a two-tone motif with lots of blue leather.

Everything I touch is made of either leather or metal, with high-quality knurling on the stalks and infotainment controller; the GV80’s cabin feels ultra-premium. One of my favorite parts is the climate control, which has a small touchscreen that lets me configure airflow and fan speed independent of the automatic function. Even the temperature dials look and feel expensive.

The GV80’s interior doesn’t forego function in favor of all that form, either. Sure, the door panels are a little light on storage space, but the flowing center console has a decently sized cubby under the transmission dial and the armrest opens up for a bit more storage. It’s roomy as heck, too, with a second row that doesn’t scrimp on headroom despite a slightly cut roof line. Advanced Plus trims have an optional third row as well that, according to my colleagues, isn’t appropriate for fully grown humans, but it works for kids.

On-road serenity

The 2021 GV80 is not a svelte fellow, clocking in at some 5,000 pounds with AWD and all the bells and whistles, but my tester packs Genesis’ larger engine option. The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 produces 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, and while it might not be the most sonorous six-pot on the block, it will push the GV80 forward with alacrity. Shoot whatever gap you want; there’s more than enough torque on tap and the eight-speed automatic transmission smoothly swaps cogs as necessary. There’s plenty of throttle and brake modulation on offer for serene, dip-free starts and stops, playing into the proper-luxury angle very nicely.

Most European midsize luxury SUVs try to bake some sportiness into their existence, with relative success. The GV80 tries to take more of a pure-luxury angle to its driving characteristics and it’s mostly successful. The Advanced-trim model in my driveway comes with Genesis’ road-scanning adaptive suspension, which uses cameras to preload the suspension in the event it has to handle some nastiness, which can be a rather big deal on the automaker’s Korean home turf. In Michigan, it does a commendable job eating up gross roads, but the whole experience feels a bit stiffer than I’d prefer, even with everything dialed to its plushest setting. An optional air suspension would turn this thing into a freakin’ cloud, so here’s hoping Genesis finds a way to shoehorn something like that in here later on. The GV80 is never really exciting to toss around, because that’s not what it’s made for, but it’s plenty confident if your commute involves a few twists and turns.

Luxury continues to be the priority when looking at other parts of the driving experience, too. The cabin is plenty quiet, thanks in part to thick glass and an active noise-cancellation system that works like the headphones on your desk. It’s a properly placid time for both the driver and the driven.

Fuel economy is competitive for the GV80’s class, but outside of that bubble, it’s not really all that and a bag of chips. 3.5-liter models, which come standard with all-wheel drive, are EPA-rated at 18 miles per gallon city, 23 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined — with premium gas, no less. 2.5-liter variants are a little less thirsty at 21 city and 25 highway, but it’s still sufficiently thirsty.

Top-notch tech

In my G80 review, I spoke at length about how much I loved Genesis’ new infotainment system — and it’s no different on the 2021 GV80, which is to say that it rules. The 14.5-inch display atop the dashboard commands attention with its delightfully calm home screen and easy navigation, whether I’m reaching to touch the screen itself or (more likely) manipulating the rotary dial on the center console. Buttons above the climate control provide quick access to the usual features like the navigation, audio or settings menus. Every corner of the system isn’t just attractive, it’s intuitive and it doesn’t take long for me to figure out my preferred way of doing things. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, but not wirelessly, and as my boss Chris Paukert pointed out in his review, there is no option for a Wi-Fi hotspot or rear-seat entertainment here, which seems like a silly omission when most of the GV80’s competitors have all that. It’s not a deal-breaker, just a head-scratcher.

Only Prestige trims get the wild gauge-cluster screen that uses digital trickery to give the impression of physical depth, which means my GV80 is stuck with the tried-and-true physical cluster that includes a moderately sized info display in the middle. This is about the only corner of the vehicle that reminds me of the car’s Hyundai-based provenance, since it looks and acts like the same getup seen in cars like the Sonata. It’s fine; it does the job it’s supposed to, it’s just the only part of the cabin that I wouldn’t call special.

Every GV80 comes with an impressive amount of safety tech, including parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking that can detect both pedestrians and cyclists. The Advanced trim throws a surround-view monitor, mirror-mounted cameras and rear automatic braking into the mix, as well as Remote Smart Parking Assist (aka Smaht Pahk), which can roll the vehicle forward and backward while the driver presses the remote from outside. It’s some cool stuff, even if I only ever use it to show off.

All GV80s also include Genesis’ Highway Driving Assist, which combines the active and passive safety aids to hold the vehicle in its lane on the highway while keeping pace with traffic. It helps reduce some of the tedium of a traffic-laden commute, but it’s a hands-on system so vigilance remains a requirement. It does a commendable job, but the GV80’s lane-centering tech can be a little aggressive at times and I’m a pretty active driver so I generally leave the system off.

Down to brass tacks

Despite embodying the full-on luxury experience better than nearly all its competitors, the 2021 Genesis G80 isn’t a bank-breaker. Starting at $49,925 including destination, the GV80 3.5T AWD Advanced before me kicks off at $65,375, which is impressive in context; a BMW X5 xDrive40i starts at about $62,000, while a Mercedes-Benz GLE450 is about a grand above that. And then there’s the Audi Q8, which commands nearly $70,000. All three of those vehicles are before options, too. Hoo boy.

It’s a weird day when a car can be both a serious value and an example-setter in its storied segment, but that’s the 2021 Genesis GV80 in a nutshell. It manages to provide an excellent luxury experience in its truest form, eschewing the notion that every vehicle needs some underlying sporty angle, while somehow beating its biggest competitors on price while maintaining quality that rivals them. You’d think that the GV80 was Genesis’ third crack at a luxury SUV, but nope; sometimes, you strike gold on the first swing.
