Aspec Adrien

I was asked to elaborate on why I view (and always write) Adrien as some flavor of aspec (asexual spectrum) and I am happy to do so! It's part of what drew me to the character in the first place as I am also aspec. This does mean that my read is going to be biased as we tend to treat ourselves as the default, meaning that we're inclined to see similarities that may not be intentional. In fact, I don't think Adrien was intended to be aspec, a topic I'll touch on more at the end. First, let's talk about why I read him as aspec.

There are certain elements that feel more like "vibes" than hard evidence. Things like the fact that Adrien developed his crush after getting to know Ladybug instead of just immediately liking her because she's cute. That's not a uniquely aspec experience. It happens to those who identify as allosexuals too. In fact, I read Marinette as allosexual even though her crush on Adrien also only came about after getting to know him a bit.

The thing that really makes me feel like Adrien is out of character when he's is written as non-aspec is the way the love square's secondary romantic relationships have been handled as well as the writing around their main crushes.

Marinette has several crushes over the course of the show: Luka, Catwalker, Adrien, and Chat Noir. Yes, three of those are the same guy, but she doesn't know that, so we're treating them as separate characters. The Luka and Catwalker crushes are the main ones I want to talk about.

When Marinette meets Luka, we get this:

Anarka: ...could you go and tell Luka that we're waiting for him to start rehearsals? Marinette: Of course. Uh, but who's Luka? And where is he? Anarka: Luka's my son, you'll find him in his cabin. Scene: Below deck in Luka's cabin Marinette: (sees Luka) Uh! (Luka looks up at her) Hey, my name's Ma-ma uh Mamamarinette! Your mom sent me down here. The groove...uh... the group's waiting for you.

In this scene, Marinette starts stuttering and blushing before Luka even says a word. And when Marinette is joined by Catwalker in season four? She's so distracted by this cute new boy that she can't fight properly. Which was a weird choice, but it's what happened so let's run with it.

These are foreign concepts to me. I have never been nervous around a cute boy because - for me - cute is an ascetic thing, not an element of attraction. Before I learned about the ace spectrum, I legitimately thought this sort of thing was something made up by Hollywood as a lazy shortcut for writing romances. This is why I say Marinette reads as allosexual and why Adrien feels distinctly aspec because the writing around him and Kagami could not be more different.

Their first interaction is a fencing match, leading to an akumatization, leading to this:

Adrien: I personally think the point was yours. Kagami: That's not what your friend saw. Adrien: Marinette can get flustered easily. She's kind and means well. She'd never cheat. Today was her first-ever experience with fencing. Kagami:(she looks surprised for a moment, then smiles.) You like her a lot, huh? Adrien: Marinette? Yeah, of course! She's a very good friend, and you'll really like her too, once you get to know her.

There's no blushing or flirting or any of the things that characterize Adrien's behavior when he's in love. This trend continues through all of the Adrigami sub plot. It never feels like he's actually into her even when they're dating. His heart remains fixed on Ladybug who still receives lots of flirting and pet names even though he's off the market. It really reads like he's only dating Kagami out of a want to be loved and not because he actually feels anything for her.

To be clear, he was in the wrong there. He should never have agreed to date Kagami if he wasn't willing to fully commit to their relationship, but I also can't ignore what this implies about his sexuality given that Marinette is such a stark contrast. While I think the writer's actual intent was more, "oh, Adrien was only ever destined for Marinette" or some other BS, the fact that the same cannot be said for Marinette means that this comes across as a difference in sexuality. Marinette can easily crush on people based on pure physical attraction while Adrien either doesn't experience physical attraction or he only experiences it under heavily limited circumstances, two options that are highly characteristic of aspec people.

If Marinette and Adrien were only able to crush on each other, then I wouldn't read into this so much. It would just be your standard romance plot as a lot of romance-focused media avoids complications like love triangles once an endgame couple has been chosen. But that's not what the show gives us. Marinette crushes on many people practically at the drop of a hat while Adrien has a much harder time falling in love. But once he is in love? He's all in! Ride or die!

This was probably done to subvert the gendered stereotype that boys are the thirsty ones and girls are the ones whose hearts remain "true." A stereotype that's bullshit! It was another reason it took me so long to understand the sexuality spectrum. Before I understood the various ways a person could experience attraction, I thought it was just a male vs female thing where guys experienced a thing that girls like me just didn't (my christian upbringing did not help to dispel these notions). Because I've done so much work to get rid of these harmful stereotypes in my own worldview, the stereotype idea didn't even occur to me until late in the game. And even if that was the intent? It doesn't change the fact that sexualities are a thing and Adrien reads super aspec.

I'll end with a brief note as to why I don't think the writers intended to make Adrien read as ace. It's mostly due to the fact that they've claimed Twitter credit for Max being ace and Alix being aro. This means that the writing team is at least aware of the sexuality and romance spectrums, but instead of claiming that Adrien is intended to read aspec - credit I would give them as I don't think rep needs to be explicit to count - they claim rep through two background characters who you could slap almost any label on without contradicting canon because canon never even touches on how these two feel about sex and romance. A lack of expressed interest is not the same as a straight up statement of disinterest. Based on what is in the show, you could write Max and Alix as fully allo and still have them be show loyal. And, to be clear, you're allowed to write these characters with any sexuality you want even if canon says they have a specific type of romantic and/or sexual attraction. They're fictional characters, not real people. This was specifically a discussion of my read on canon and what the writing staff has explicitly confirmed about their intended rep or lack thereof.

I like lukanette regardless of whether they’re platonic or romantic or something in between or completely outside the spectrum

Never really felt chemistry with adrigami though. Like I see how they could be friends but they just never seemed to really vibe? As if they were reading a script in declaring how important they were to each other but there was no real emotion behind it. I can’t really find a way to attribute Kagami’s insistence on pursuing Adrien to anything a normal person would consider as a regular crush and Adrien never really seemed to have much interest in Kagami so it gave the vibes of him just kinda going along with it just cuz (it’s been an issue with the show never having Adrien put effort into non romantic relationships at all post S1 with the only exception I can think of being getting laxatives for Marinette that one time? idk but the lack of importance given to his platonic relationships made the little effort they made him put into romantic interests feel like a bad coping mechanism)

As for Luka and Kagami on their own

I quite like Luka but think he could’ve done without the daddy drama. Also idc what canon says, he will be a music therapist whether he wants to or not. I hc him having like three different jobs as a young adult rip

With Kagami, I like a combination of various aspects of the 3-5 different personalities she’s had so far but she’s too inconsistent for me to have solid opinions about her. She’ll probably have a whole new personality in S6 and every half season going forward anyway. In my heart she’s just a unknowing lesbian picking the beards that look best on paper bc she’s convinced that’s what attraction is supposed to be like (practical and with good reputation) and also as a young adult she fakes going to business school and uses the money to bribe her mother’s employees to stay quiet about her spending the time pursuing an art career

Also Kagami hates that Marinette rides a motorcycle (death machine) and gets close to setting it on fire herself before Ladybug is forced to use it as a projectile to stop a villain’s plan and miraculous cure isn’t able to save it (Ladybug is crying throughout the whole incident for some reason) (oh yeah I refuse to entertain the idea that Kagami learns maribug’s identity in such a lame way so in my heart she’s doesn’t know)

Luka brings balance and reflection, Adrien brings energy and happiness, and Marinette brings drive and heart... and chaos which is always a nice touch. Even canonically, we see how the three of them vibe together and understand each other (Wishmaker) and support each other (Migration). Each individual couples makes a great pairing and what's better than one SO who loves you unconditionally? TWO SOs WHO LOVE YOU. Because they all have two hands.

-He the secret keeper. The missing link between the two. He's the calmness and the storm, the one who's the biggest loser and the most competent of them all. They're all holding hands and deserve to kiss

Alright. I don't think that was meant to be a good thing in and out of universe. Monarch betrayed Bug Noire. The ending felt overall unsatisfying. Something happened to Lila right at the end. The London Special including someone managing to do a wish. Marinette's grown a strong sense of justice. She'd tell Adrien who Monarch was if she could. And possibly even more. If Chloe is meant to be so irredeemable, then what was the point of her showing self-loathing issues back in Maledictator? And why was Felix allowed to get away with far worse? If Marinette is supposed to be so flawed and make a mistake every episode to learn from, then why is this show enabling her stalking so much? And why doesn't that show follow that exactly? If this is meant to be such a baby's show, why is it so in-depth and serialized like a show for far older kids? I don't think we can trust a word Thomas Astruc says. TV show creators can lie and misdirect us. It's happened before with Gravity Falls. Something's up. Something's not right. And hopefully Season 6 will explain and resolve it.

Kagami paced out onto her balcony, sipping a cold glass of milk as tiny droplets of water dripped from her hair on to the towel draped around her shoulders. She leaned against the railing with a sigh, gazing out at the street below and listening to the distant hum of traffic a few streets over.

Nights like this were almost unbearable. She couldn’t stand the quiet. Her muscles twitched, longing to move, but she’d already run five kilometers on the treadmill before her bath. Nights like these left her restless, eager for something else to do lest she be left alone with her thoughts. Thoughts she’d rather not focus on for fear of her carefully crafted walls crumbling beneath her, and several of them were especially loud tonight after dinner with her family.

Nothing she ever did was good enough. She won all of her matches at their recent tournament, but still her grandfather pointed out her mistakes. Every missed step, every strike that was just a fraction of a second delayed. They’d sat for hours picking apart her every move, pushing her to try harder and be better. Because winning meant nothing if she didn’t do it perfectly.

She chugged the rest of her milk, eyes shut tightly as she tried to bury her thoughts. There was no point in feeling sorry for herself. She just needed to try harder.

“Hello?” She gasped in surprise at the sudden voice above her, surging forward with ragged coughs as she attempted to dislodge the milk from her lungs. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

She spun around to see reflective green sclera and a mop of messy blond hair.

“What are you doing here?” She cocked a skeptical brow, palming her glass in a preparatory stance, ready to launch it at a moment’s notice.

“Sorry, I was just out patrolling, and I got kind of lonely. You seemed like you could use some company too.” He explained, ears flattening against his hair.

“So, what you just randomly pop in on stranger’s balconies when they look troubled?” She glared at him, folding her arms over her chest and cocking a hip, but upon seeing his pained expression, she pursed her lips. “Well, I suppose I’ll allow it this time seeing as I could use a distraction right about now.”

“You and me both,” Chat Noir remarked, hopping down to stand beside her. “What’s got you feeling down?”

“Family,” she said after a moment, chewing her lip. “You?”

“Family,” he said, crossing his wrists as he leaned against the railing. “There’s someone…they expect me to be perfect all the time, and I just wish that I could mess up just once. I hate having to live by other people’s standards.”

“I know the feeling,” Kagami admitted, averting her gaze and leaning against her fist.

“That’s the reason I love being Chat Noir so much. For just a little while, I can do what I want. Say what I want, get out, be free. If I wasn’t Chat Noir, I don’t know what I would do,” he said with a shrug.

“Probably the same thing I do,” she said, lips curling into a crooked grin. “Fill your time with senseless activities in order to push away your thoughts.”

“Do you ever just want to run away?” He asked, turning to her, and she tapped her nail on the metal contemplatively.

“Yeah. All the time,” she said finally, and Chat eyed her for a moment before extending a hand to her.

“Come with me.” When her eyes narrowed, he let out a short laugh. “I promise not to do anything weird. Let’s just get away for a while.”

At that she quirked an interested brow, hesitantly placing her hand in his.

“Okay. Just a little while.”

Gale Reviews: ML Season 5 episode 12 Perfection

(As mentioned, this is airing before episodes 10 and 11. So obviously, spoilers below)

-Chat noir absolutely bragging about being in love while helping Ladybug pull a fishing rod. Good for him.

-Also not gonna say I called their dynamic when Adrien and Marinette are in love with eachother, but I TOTALLY called it.

-They fished a boat out together. So someone who handles calculations get on that feat analysis.

I feel like it was good. Nothing too earth shaking. But I did enjoy the cuteness. The adrinette is great and I don’t care what people say, the platonic ladynoir is great. The Post relationship pre reveal is good.

Adrien singing was cute. I do want to know exactly what is holding Marinette back.

I do feel I’m missing what happened during kwami choice.

what are your thoughts about miraculous ladybug ships??

I’m assuming you mean, like, individual ships and not just the nebulous idea of characters from Miraculous Ladybug being in relationships, but you didn’t specify which ones so I’m just going to do some of the popular ones I’ve seen.

First off, the Love Square. I don’t ship it. It was cute at first, but their behavior towards each other has gotten more and more unhealthy and it’s not great. Fanon is okay, but I prefer other ships and if I read a fic with the Love Square in it, it’s for another ship/plot/etc. The thing is, the writers had a chance for Adrien and Marinette to have other relationships and grow as people and then get together, and then they ruined it for themselves.

Adrigami — I kinda like it. They’re cute. I ship them more than the Love Square. I wish they’d stayed together longer instead of the writers forcing us back into the same boring, toxic “they’re made for each other so it’s okay for them to be fucked up about their attractions” dynamic of Love Square.

I’m still a little salty, let’s move on.

Lukanette — again, cute. I kinda liked them together and I definitely ship them more than the Love Square. I wish it had lasted longer.

Marigami — beautiful. Absolutely breathtaking. I love them. 10000/10.

Lukadrien — MY OTP!!! I love this ship so much, it is my absolute favorite Adrien ship.

Marcaniel — they’re absolutely perfect, your honor, and they deserve everything good in the world. Comic Boyfriends. Rainbow Tomato. Perfect.

Julerose — all hail our lesbian queens!! (Yes I know Rose isn’t a lesbian, that’s not the point). I adore them.

Chloenette — not really my thing. Tbh, I’m not really into the Enemies to Lovers trope, and I can’t really see Chloé and Marinette being anything more than friends (I still resent Astruc for backing out of Chloe’s redemption arc), but I can see where people are coming from ig.

Chlonath — I don’t even know where this one comes from?? Have they ever even interacted outside of that one scene where she makes fun of his art and outs his crush on Marinette? I don’t see it at all.

Kimax — I really like this one. Classic jock x nerd type shit. Best friends but make it gay. Genius x himbo. Perfect.

Chloebrina — I kinda ship reformed!Chloe with Sabrina. At the very least, I’m pretty sure Sabrina’s in love with Chloe.

Gabenath — they deserve each other, tbh.

DJWifi — *chef’s kiss*

I don’t really like any ships with Alix, since she’s canonically aromantic. She’s just sort of vibing, the closest thing she has to a significant other is her skates.

I also don’t ship anyone with Lila because she’s a bitch and I hate her guts. And I don’t think she’s capable of having a healthy relationship.

And obviously, I don’t ship Gabriel with any of the children bc they’re children and that’s pedophilia. If you ship pedophilia, you better get your ass in the fucking corner.
