[Eddie is the newest firefighter at the 118. Buck is the ghost haunting the 118. Unfortunately for both of them, Eddie's also a witch and needs to put Buck's spirit to rest, because that's what witches do.

Turns out, Buck's spirit? Super not interested in being put to rest. Very interested, however, in flirting with Firefighter Diaz, who is just trying to survive his candidate year.

Notes: I love this one SO MUCH. It’s easily one of my favorites. 911 is among a very long list of favorite shows, but it one of the few that is my some kind of sci/fi or fantasy thing. So, it’s really cool to read something that has supernatural elements, especially when I haven’t seen a lot of 911 fics that have that. I love how Buck and Eddie’s relationship develops. This fic also features so much of the Diaz siblings and I love it for that.

ok since people r very into my chris fic i shall share some of my random behind the scenes thoughts while writing it:

adriana has literally been waiting her entire life for her obviously gay older brother who joined the army to avoid his wife and then moved to los angeles to be a sexy firefighter to COME OUT ALREADY and by the time we meet her in this fic she is like Vibrating with the need to be like EDDIE IS GAYYYYYYY ARE YOU PEOPLE BLIND??? which is why it takes like absolutely zero prodding from chris for her to spill all of eddie's business. i think when eddie was little he was a very obviously gay little boy and as he grew up he learned how to Be Normal but adriana never forgot and she's like deeply sad about it.

chris is So fucking miserable at his grandparents' house he misses video games so bad. i couldn't find a way to really incorporate this without it feeling like a cheap "look he's a TEEN BOY" thing but yeah the second he gets back home he is slamming that headset on and gaming until eddie tells him he has to take a break or he'll burn his eyes out of his sockets.

there are a Lot of songs on buck and eddie's joint depression playlist that i listed and then cut for practicality's sake but if there's any like interest in that i could maybe put together + link the full playlist for y'all?

buck's "maddie" playlist is entirely music he listened to growing up bc it makes him think of her. as a younger sibling my music taste from birth to like. age fifteen ish. was just wholly whatever my older sister listened to and i think buck is the same way. i don't think buck necessarily listens to this playlist on his own very often but if he's hanging out with maddie and/or babysitting jee-yun he'll put it on because it makes him happy to enjoy some 90s/00s nostalgia with his best girls. sometimes he'll play it in the car when he's driving chris somewhere because he wants to carry forward some of those good memories he has with maddie with chris.

buck and eddie's texts were written in order to coincide with each other! eddie texts more frequently than buck but i think if you pay attention you can sometimes tell which days buck Also sent chris a text bc they match. some of them were sent specifically in the wake of very emotionally taxing shifts where they both wanted so badly to call chris and beg him to come home but they knew that wouldn't go well and they didn't want to make chris feel guilty so they tried to play it cool.

speaking of buck and eddie: i don't think that eddie's conversation with chris is necessarily the First step in eddie realizing he's gay or moving toward something romantic with buck. keep in mind that chris has been gone for at least two weeks by the time he talks to either of them, and buck and eddie spend the vast majority of their time together. this fic is restricted to chris' pov, and he has no way of knowing whether, say, buck and tommy broke up, or whether his dad has been thinking about some things differently since he's been gone. buck and eddie Also have to spend twelve hours in a car together just the two of them between the end of the fic and their reunion with chris. this is not me saying that buck and tommy DID break up or that buddie got together while chris was away (i don't actually have a solid "canon" for where they're at), just that i intentionally left space for a wide range of possibilities due to chris' limited knowledge of what's going on with them!!

i kinda intentionally did not delve too deeply into the psychology of the diaz parents here because i think their behavior is a bit inscrutable to chris. the vast majority of his memories of them are from when he was really little, and therefore i think he doesn't actually know them very well as people. he knows that there's some tension between them and eddie, but prior to this fic he never really bothered to question Why. all he knows is that his grandparents will probably come and get him if he calls, and that it'll hurt his dad's feelings, and in the immediate aftermath of the kim debacle that's all he cares about. once he's in el paso, he starts noticing some things that make him a bit uncomfortable, but he never does determine for sure what their motivations and opinions are about this whole situation, whether they're treating him a certain way bc he's the grandkid or bc of his cerebral palsy, and whether their treatment of eddie really does stem from homophobia or not. at the end of the day he's thirteen years old and i wanted to leave his grandparents' True Selves as a bit of a mystery because 1. i don't think They necessarily know why they do what they do and 2. i don't think there's any one answer that would be satisfying.

chris literally had zero intention of saying anything to eddie about the Gay Thing he just is very much thirteen years old and emotional and he fundamentally Trusts his father to never like. lash out at him for saying something like that. so he doesn't try too hard to hold it back and impulsively says Hey Dad Are You Gay Maybe because he's never gone so long without talking to his dad before and he's just bursting with thoughts and feelings. he's not even trying to do a buddie matchmaking thing it's just that the easiest way to make his argument is to be like (points at buck).

We're going to pretend this didn't take me, like, two weeks to get to 😅

Adriana hated, a little bit, that she wasn’t able to get an earlier flight into Los Angeles so that she could reasonably ditch her parents like Sophia had until the ceremony. She hated it, because their parents, no matter how much she loved them, were busy bodies and Adriana, the resident busy-body of the Diaz siblings, didn’t like being on the receiving end of it. It was a bit too much like looking into the mirror while she sat at the back of Eddie’s firehouse and watched Helena Diaz critique everything from the ceilings to the tablecloths, to the way a firefighter who looked five seconds away from throwing the broom at her was sweeping the floor. 

They’re so cute!!!!! Sophia had texted her about an hour into spending the afternoon at Eddie’s house watching him get ready for work. She hadn’t sent a picture along with her message but, it was fine, Adriana knew Eddie hated pictures and had to mostly be tricked into them. 

The whole family showing up for his little shield celebration was going to be enough to throw him off center. Adriana… wasn’t about to make things worse when their parents had already stepped in shit and failed to clean it up. “Couldn’t even make it to dinner,” Helena clicked her tongue and brought back up the thing that, for some reason, was worrying her the most about the entire situation. She was so worried, Adriana knew, that Eddie had seen their… less than favorable reaction to his (forced) outing as a rejection. He had barely spoken to them since, always busy, always with something more important going on. Adriana had spoken to them, as had Sophia, broken down what it was that they had done wrong but they just kept saying the same thing - it was a shock. What were we supposed to do? Confront him about it in front of Christopher? “I wonder if he’ll walk in, see us here, and walk right out.” 

“He’s going to be on shift.” Adriana answered dryly. “He can’t just walk out.” 

Abuela laughed and pat Adriana’s knee under the table. “He has been busy Helena.” 

“His boyfriend,” Ramon flinched, just enough for Adriana to notice, on the other side of the table, pursing his lips and directing his gaze to the table cloth. Guilty. Perhaps, out of all of them, their father was the one that needed to apologize the most (was the one that felt the most terrible for how things had been handled). But there had always been a disconnect between him and Eddie - Adriana remembered when Eddie had been little and he had followed Ramon around much like Christopher did him. But somewhere after Abuelo had died, Ramon had shut down, took on more hours at work, told Eddie that he had to be the man of the house. He had never had the same issue connecting with Adriana or Sophia, but Eddie… Adriana didn’t know what it was. She didn’t know if they were just too close, or if their father had accidentally pushed Eddie too far away by repeating things that he had been taught when he was little. Either way, this wasn’t something that their father not apologizing for could fix. Eddie had needed Ramon to do the right thing for once. Had needed the vulnerability to be two sided… but Ramon had walked away and he hadn’t tried to step back in yet. “Just got literally blown up. Dinner probably wasn’t his first priority.” 

Not to mention the Shannon and Christoher of it all, but Adriana was pretty sure that their parents didn’t know just how nasty the divorce had gotten. Eddie had had enough aired about his life without his permission, Adriana wasn’t going to make that worse by airing more. 

“Dios,” Sophia’s hissed whisper as she rounded the corner had Adriana flushing, if only because of the way she smacked at her arm as she said it and dropped herself into the open seat beside her. “Do not drop that in casual conversation, Rana. Eddie gets this…” She waved her hand in front of her face. “Look and this is supposed to be a happy day. We don’t need Eddie’s kicked puppy look.” 

Helena perked up, leaned across the table, and kissed Sophia’s cheek in hello. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, but the familiar scuff of Christopher’s crutches cut her off at the start. Pepa’s voice followed after him and, at a much more sedate pace was…. Adriana tried not to stare.

She had spoken to Buck exactly three times before - all on facetime and all with Eddie within an arm’s reach. He was nice, funny, handsome. Now, even without the cast taking up his entire leg, it was like someone had cut his strings. His cheeks were pale, his hair was a fluffier than Adriana was sure he liked it, and someone (his sister, her mind filled in with a guess) was hovering just to the side carrying her purse and a look of concentrated concern that Adriana remembered seeing on Helena’s face for the first six months Eddie had been back from war. 

Their father sat up a bit straighter, pushing back his chair and got halfway out of it before Abuela beat him to it, “Evan, mi amor!” It was a bit pointed, even as Helena opened her arms towards Christopher who instantly sunk into them and it did it’s job - their mother flushed. 

“Here,” Ramon cleared his throat and gave up his chair, reaching out in a move that was so fluid and familiar that Adriana had to blink to recognize what she was seeing. “Sit.” 

If only Eddie could see them now, the way Helena fussed, the way Abuela smiled in approval, the way Ramon grabbed onto Eddie’s boyfriend’s arm to help him lower himself, slowly, into his closest, open chair and immediately grabbed another to prop up his cast. 

Maybe things weren’t so lost between them all. 

Maybe….

It was about Christopher – for Eddie, it always came down to Christopher. Buck understood – really, he did – but when Eddie said, "I'm leaving the 118," what Buck heard was, "I'm leaving you."

The first time his father berates him, he's three, on the cusp of turning four, and it's his clearest early memory. He's playing in the garden with Adriana, chasing after her – she has long brown hair and it's streaming behind her as she runs, and he's trying to catch her but he trips over a discarded hula hoop and goes down hard.

His knees are bloodied, and he's wailing, big fat tears rolling down his cheeks, and his father storms out of the house and snaps, "For god's sake, Eddie, it's just a scratch. Stop crying like a girl!"

This is basically what I think would happen Adriana Diaz had been attending UCLA when Evan Buckley moved to LA and befriended him at a monthly trivia game.

Ok I'm dumb but do we have any proof that Buck and Abuela know each other, that they share recipes etc? I know it's always in fics that she loves him like a grandchild but I don't remember anything like that

Okay short version: not really. We can safely assume they’ve met and spoken, but the recipe sharing grandchild emotion is fanfic spec (but fun fanfic spec)

Longer version: I’m at work so I can’t really pull up This Life We Choose and double check that Isabel is at Eddie’s badge ceremony, but I’m pretty sure she was. Buck, as we know, went significantly out of his way to be there too. (Fun fact: there are actresses in that episode who show up both at Shannon’s wake and Eddie’s badge ceremony who are credited as Sophia and Adriana Diaz so we can also safely think that Buck has at least met Eddie’s sisters in passing.) Then Isabel was at the station with Chris et al during Christmas Spirit and. And then obviously both Buck and Isabel were at Eddie’s coming home party in Survivors.

So like, at best we can say they have canonically interacted in a few places. They know each other, and Buck is clearly aware of her importance to both Eddie and Chris (as seen in Breaking Point when he’s talking to Chris) but we know literally nothing about Isabel’s POV on the situation. We know she loves her grandson and her great grandson, that she’s got at least two kids, and that her (late) husband’s name was very probably Edmundo but we don’t really know anything else about her that I can think of off the top of my head.

If you’re looking for more specific details on like literally anything in the show, though, @liesoverthec knows like. Everything. Just like. E v e r y t h i n g.

Let’s go perspective flip or behind the scenes for “history collapsing in it’s wake” ?

Oh my GOOOOOD, you've awoken the deep love within me. I would have done the perspective flip but gosh I love rambling about these stories like a NERD.

I threw this together really quick before therapy shsjjs

history collapsing in its wake was so much fun to write in, truly, the most heartbreaking way. I got to play with so many POVs that I hadn’t explored yet - with Athena, Bobby, and again with Maddie (I actually had originally planned to write something from Sophia’s POV too but when I tell you this story took over I mean it took over). This story was meant to be an examination of Buck’s relationship with secrecy and Maddie but it very quickly became an exploration of Eddie’s relationship with his family as well and the way Eddie’s conversations with Adriana would go from 1-100 so quickly was so intriguing to write. 

More below the read more so people can avoid it if they want to. 

We’ll look at Wednesday from chapter one, as an example. When Adriana and Sophia join Buck, Eddie and Chris for dinner. 

The big starting point to put Eddie on uneven footing is that Adriana said she wasn’t going to come when he first brought it up to her at the airport. Why wasn’t he shocked? The invitation was always there, Eddie had never retracted it. In fact, the entire series, I tried to constantly show him reaching out to her and Adriana shutting him down. And a big part of this installment specifically is Eddie deciding if he even wants her in his life if she can’t bring herself to be supportive, or at least respectful, of the rest of it. It was sort of an examination of the “I love you, but I don’t like you” narrative so many of us have heard over the years in unhealthy relationships. 

As for Buck’s ADHD in this series, it’s there but I tried to keep it mostly subtle? In part, that was because I don’t have ADHD, I don’t want to inaccurately represent what he’s going through. In another, it’s because if you subscribe to that headcanon of him (in my opinion), it’s not the biggest thing about his personality. It’s in the little things, like him getting distracted, his info-dumping, the way it’s linked to his depression. It’s not anything that Eddie pays much attention to because it’s just part of the man he fell in love with. But it’s there, for example, in the following passage: 

Buck pushed himself away from the counter with a small laugh, his book upside down on the kitchen table and his phone screen side up on top of the cover. He had been reading, Eddie remembered, sitting at the kitchen table with his feet up on a different chair, Eddie’s last name stitched into the left shoulder of the sweatshirt he had tossed on that morning, reading intently until Hen had texted him a TikTok. And then he had been scrolling, the repetitive noise soft and his small laughs a balm to Eddie’s nerves.

I was trying to put in little tidbits of Adriana and Eddie just clearly not understanding each other. As I said in the first one of these you asked for (lmao), I pulled a lot of the Diaz sibling relationship from the one I have with both of my sisters. I’m not quite the Eddie in this scenario (there are some clear differences) a lot of what Adriana does, a lot of the way she acts, is based off of the way I’ve seen my middle sister act around our oldest. 

Eddie didn’t really have any reason to be nervous and yet, here he was, fidgeting like he was twenty years old with Shannon pressed close into his side, a sonogram squeezed in between his hands, begging Adriana not to say anything until he had a moment to catch his breath (she hadn’t said anything, but she had threatened to three months later when Eddie still hadn’t said anything to their parents and he hadn’t waited to see if she was the type to follow through on that threat).

Adriana inspires this inherent nervousness in Eddie. Evidenced by above, she kept his secret about Christopher before he was born, but she held it over him the entire time. I pictured it working like her constantly reminding Eddie like he forgot, not allowing him to really have time to digest it himself by asking him every few days if he had said anything yet. She used the excuse of “helping” and refused to see it as anything other than that. 

Eddie notes several times that the house was clean. That things were in their place, that the food was in the oven, etc. He’s so scared that he’ll accidentally give Adriana something to criticize because she always finds something to turn her nose up at. 

It’s interesting only because of the stark contrast in how he views Sophia. The biggest difference: Sophia isn’t just his little sister, she’s his best friend. She’s the first person he told about liking Buck, and that was after her being in LA for a few hours. He trusts her with every aspect of his life, of Christopher’s life and yet he’s so protective of her that he doesn’t want her to get dragged into whatever is going on between him and Adriana. Her things were in his house, she would have let herself in, when she did let herself in, it was to give him a hug and say hello. Sophia is great, because even when her and Eddie clash they don’t push each other far away. 

“She’s in a mood,” Sophia whispered, and reached into the pot to dip her finger into the mashed potatoes. She popped them into her mouth with a bright smile on her face. “Estaba peleando con Vince en el auto.” 

Eddie’s eyebrows shot up. “She told you that?” 

“No,” Sophia rolled her eyes. “She always does that thing with her mouth when they’ve fought, though.” 

The moment Sophia comes through the door she warns Eddie about Adriana’s mood. I wanted it to be inferred here, at least a little, that Adriana also sees Sophia as someone she’s close to. Unfortunately, Sophia is very stuck between the two of them. Eddie and Adriana clashed a lot when they were younger, and Sophia was the natural peacekeeper. It’s not a comfortable role to fit into, and it’s one that around the end of this installment and the next, Sophia learns to step out of. But the whole reason why she ended up in LA was because she didn’t want to potentially live a life where Eddie would have died and she would have been absent. She wanted a relationship with him, versus Adriana who did it all out of an obligation she viewed by their DNA. Moreover, Sophia made an effort with Eddie’s relationship with Buck. Beyond the entire homophobia thing, Sophia talked to him. She joked with him. She respected his place in Eddie and Christopher’s life. 

 I absolutely projected on Sophia hard being the youngest of three myself, but I just adored her so much as the series went on.

So brilliant! Love love the Buck and Eddie relationship and how honest and intimate it is just amazing.

And then the families and the sibling relationship… Maddie overwhelmed with what had happened and Buck ten years on and now with a supportive family around him… oh Athena’s line was just brilliant along ‘that’s your problem, you still think of him as the kid’ and Chimney saying the same thing that Buck now has Eddie and a family, Buck has a right to hold boundaries. Just amazing 🤩

Oh now let’s talk about the Diaz family because that is some of the best writing I have ever seen of them! So complicated and layered! Adriana just expecting Eddie to forgive her because she is his sister… And Sophia stepping in to protect Eddie ..

And gosh the accident with Buck and the hospital scene with the three siblings … just brilliant…

I really could go on , because I just loved every thing about it! Just amazing 🤩

Oh gosh you're so so so so sweet!!!! Day by Day means so much to me and it means even more that so many people were affected by it too.

Honest, intimate and loving - my three goals whenever writing those two together. It's so important to me that even if they struggle, they know they have a safe home within each other.

The family relationships!!! I wanted to keep them real and sympathetic (to a point), especially with Maddie and Buck. As a youngest child, I can only sympathize with the POV of the eldest, but I can understand completely every complicated emotion I put Buck through in regards to Maddie finally finding out and reacting to it like it wasn't ten years ago (because it wasn't... for her).

I'm so glad you enjoyed the nuance I added to the Diaz family! The Diaz sibling scenes at the hospital just broke me to write but were *so important* to the story!

God I love everything that you write but your perspective flips are such a special type of fun. I really fucking love seeing these extra scenes or the same scene with a completely different lense. Like the Connor scene??? He becomes less sympathetic bc he's very aware of how he was hurting buck and more sympathetic bc the way he reacted to eddie does make sense from this pov. AND his insight into buck is so so interesting bc he actually does understand him more than I expected him too. Also the idea that he almost went into his room is killing me lol.

And the Helena pov??? The way she realised who buck was like seconds before disaster?? Her desperation to fix things?? Her realisation that she doesn't know how to communicate with her son anymore?? But also "let me see how happy he makes you" actually killed me how do i go on after this?? I do have more empathy for her after this scene. Between this and the Adriana pov I'm really excited to see more of the Diaz family in the rewrite universe.

And then abby's desire to have buck for one night when he desperately wants the opposite kind of kills me. Also love the confirmation that Abbys drink did have strawberry in it lmao.

Every single time you write these I go back to the series and reread these scenes again and it's just so much fun and so fucking interesting. Like I really do adore this series it's absolutely one of my favourite fic series and I live for Fridays now

I'm glad you're enjoying the lil perspective flips! I think Helena’s was my favorite to write this time around. When it comes to the Diaz parents, imo, they more just have an issue *connecting* with Eddie, and because we only see them through him or Buck's POV, they're not always going to be shown in the kindest light. They're human, every single one of these characters are, and that makes them so fundamentally flawed.

The first time his father berates him, he's three, on the cusp of turning four, and it's his clearest early memory. He's playing in the garden with Adriana, chasing after her – she has long brown hair and it's streaming behind her as she runs, and he's trying to catch her but he trips over a discarded hula hoop and goes down hard.

His knees are bloodied, and he's wailing, big fat tears rolling down his cheeks, and his father storms out of the house and snaps, "For god's sake, Eddie, it's just a scratch. Stop crying like a girl!"

12) Who is your favourite character to write for? Why?

Eddie, and I enjoy writing him more than anyone. I even enjoy writing him more than Buck.

He’s my favourite character and I just think he’s the most interesting to play with in terms of fic writing. I just prefer writing from his POV. He’s the most interesting to me out of all the characters on the show (which is one of the reasons why I was so mad about 4x08 - that’s not the Eddie Diaz I know and love, that’s for sure).

13) Who is your least favourite character to write for? Why?

I don’t really have one for 911 - I tend not to include Michael very much but that’s only because he’s kind of a fringe character.

41) What’s you favourite minor character you’ve written?

I love writing Adriana and Sophia in the Songs Universe, and honestly - I really like writing Buck’s parents as drunken lushes in the Songs Universe as well? I enjoy writing villains, not gonna lie! Oh and I liked writing Judd from Lone Star as well. 😊
