Broken
Summary: The events at Rheya mansion has created a rift between Blaire and her friends, particularly with Adrian. She doesn’t know who she can trust anymore and Adrian is terrified that he’s lost the one person he cherishes most.
Pairing: Adrian Raines x MC (Blaire)
A/N: I’ve been working on this all week and I finally finished it. It didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted it to, but it’s decent. This takes place at the end of chapter 8. This is also the first fic I’ve written since September. Writer’s block sucks.
Tag List: @kinda-iconic @choices-addict-25 @adrianadmirer @adrianrainesworld @flyawayboo @drakexnadira @tacohead13 @bloodboundsstuff @god-save-the-keen @galaxy-of-rosess
"Kill her."
Those two words kept replaying in Blaire's mind like a broken record. Images of Rheya drenched in blood, and grinning wickedly flashed in front of her, sending cold chills down her back. She felt her chest tighten again, and her stomach clenched as the fresh, raw memories tormented her over and over.
She felt faint and fought to keep herself from passing out. The burst power she'd used at the mansion had drained her physically and mentally, leaving her utterly exhausted. She had no idea where that power had come from, and her hands were still tingling from the blast. The thought that powers like that existed within her unnerved her. If she could do something like without even trying, what else was she capable of doing?
She leaned her head against the window with a sigh. She wanted to sleep so badly, but every time she closed her eyes, she saw the murderous, hate-filled faces of her friends descending on her, eager to kill her and drain her blood from her body. It was terrifying that Rheya had turned them against her so easily and that they had almost succeeded in killing her. That Adrian had almost succeeded in killing her.
That had been the most frightening thing. He had attempted to murder her and had shown no hesitation or remorse. He hadn't recognized her, and she had seen no trace of the man who had always shown her kindness and made her feel safe. No trace of the man she'd fallen in love with. Instead, she had only seen a monster hellbent on her demise. His eyes had been cold and empty, as though he'd had no soul. She would never forget the moment his hands closed around her neck, and how he had smiled while choking her, how his fangs had gleamed dangerously in the moonlight. Her hand unconsciously drifted to her neck and lightly touched where his fingers had dug into her skin. Any bruises he'd left had already faded, but she could still feel where his hands had been.
Blaire remembered the utter hopelessness she'd felt when she tried calling out to him, when she had tried to reach the real Adrian, only to realize that he couldn't hear her. Rheya had snatched him away just like that and had trapped him inside his own mind. She had made him want to kill her, and he had readily obeyed. Blaire couldn't suppress the nagging thought that deep down, he wanted to hurt her and that Rheya had only given him the final push he needed to act. The thought sent a new thrill of fear through her. Surely that couldn't be true, right?
She wondered for a moment if that was how Adrian used to be before he'd escaped from Gaius. He had always been vague when talking about his early days as a vampire and never went into great detail on what exactly Gaius had made him do. Was the Adrian at the mansion the same wild and ruthless Adrian that had once followed his master's every command without question? Had she caught a glimpse of the Warrior Prince? The Butcher of Antietam? Had Rheya managed to bring his inner darkness to the surface again?
Blaire shuddered at the thought. She hated thinking that way about him. He'd been nothing but kind, patient, and caring since the day they'd met, and she knew that he'd changed his ways. Rationally, she knew he would never purposely hurt her, and that it had just been Rheya working through him, but she couldn't help the fear she felt towards him now. Towards all of them.
Part of her wanted nothing more than for Adrian to hold her close like he always did, and tell her that everything would be okay. But the other half feared his touch, terrified that his hands would find her throat again and attempt to kill her once more.
Blaire wrapped her arms around herself as silent sobs wracked her body. Rheya had toyed with her mind so much that she no longer trusted her friends, and no longer trusted her own judgment. She thought back to the visions she'd had just a few days earlier, of New York in ruins once again, of those awful creatures on an unknown island, and of her unleashing her powers and massacring dozens of innocent humans. Was this the moment she began sinking into the darkness that Serafine had seen in her? Was Adrian's attempt to kill her the catalyst for the future she'd seen? Blaire didn't know, and that was terrifying.
Never had she felt so alone before.
Never had she felt so broken.
_______________
If there was one thing Adrian hated most in the world, it was hearing Blaire cry. He hated seeing her so upset and not being able to do anything about it. Especially when he was part of the reason for her tears. He wanted so badly to go and comfort her and tell her how sorry he was for hurting her, but he knew it wasn't wise to approach her right now. She'd been through enough already for one night.
He and the others sat quietly near the front of the plane. Neither of them had spoken since Blaire had retreated to the rear of the jet over an hour ago. They knew they needed to give her some space, but watching her walk away from them had stung each of them quite a bit. None of them had voiced it aloud, but they all knew they'd lost Blaire's trust and that it was going to be difficult to regain it. And it was all because Rheya had decided to use them as pawns in her warped quest for power. Adrian clenched his fists in anger. Rheya would pay for what she'd done. He would make sure of that.
"Damn it!" Jax's voice cut through his thoughts. Adrian glanced up to see him glaring at the wall, his hands gripping his katana tightly. "God, I hate hearing her cry. Especially when we're the reason she's so upset."
"I know," Lily said dejectedly. "I want to give her a hug so bad, but...."
"But we should leave her alone for now," Kamilah said. "She's vulnerable right now, and forcing her to talk will only make things worse."
"I just hate that Rheya was able to get inside our heads like that," Jax said. "The way she was able to control what we thought and forced us to turn on Blaire like that." He shook his head. "I never want to experience that again."
Adrian silently agreed with him. The way Rheya had corrupted his thoughts and made him want to kill Blaire was nothing short of terrifying. His mind had been filled with an overwhelming desire to hurt her in the most painful way possible. He had wanted to have her blood on his hands. It made him sick knowing how close he'd come to killing the woman he loved. He couldn't blame Blaire for not wanting to be anywhere near him.
Her petrified face appeared in his mind again, making him wince. He'd been aware of what he was doing the entire time, but Rheya had been in control of his body, whispering in his mind and making him relish the thought killing Blaire with his own hands. It was almost like what had happened with his serum. A force more powerful than him had taken over his mind and forced him to kill. But what Rheya had done to him felt so much worse. She had violated him and completely changed who he was with amazing ease. She had turned him into a monster, the one thing he'd fought so hard not to become.
And once again, it had been up to Blaire to save them. None of them had expected her powers to manifest in the way they had. The blast of psychic energy had expelled Rheya's presence from his mind and had instantly made him feel like himself again. It almost felt like he had been cleansed of Rheya's evil, and honestly, Adrian felt lighter than he had in a long time. He glanced over at Blaire. If she could break Rheya's mind control that easily, then just how powerful was she? And how much stronger would she be after training with Kano?
A hand on his shoulder drew him away from his brooding. Kamilah was frowning at him with concerned eyes, and he realized she'd spoken to him and he hadn't heard.
"Sorry, what did you say?"
"I said, are you alright? You haven't said a word."
Adrian sighed and ran a hand down his face. "No, Kamilah, I'm not alright." He glared down at his hands. "I almost killed her."
"That wasn't you back there, Adrian. That was Rheya," Kamilah said sternly. "She took control of us and used us as weapons."
"That doesn't matter," he countered. "It was still my hands around her neck. It was my face she was looking at."
"But Blaire knows it was Rheya pulling the strings. She knows you would never hurt her on purpose. None of us would."
He sighed again. "Knowing that doesn't change the fact that she's afraid of us now. That she's afraid of me. We've lost her trust, Kamilah."
Kamilah was silent. She knew he was right, but didn't want to admit it. If Blaire didn't trust them to stand by her, to help her unlock and control her powers, then defeating Rheya would be impossible. Maybe that's what the First had intended from the beginning. To cause a rift between them so that Blaire wouldn't be strong enough to oppose her rule.
A long moment of silence settled between them, and Adrian finally noticed that Lily and Jax had moved off to one side of the plane to sleep. He suddenly became aware of how tired he felt after running from Rheya's mansion and then being thrown into a random fight with Gaius, who'd somehow returned from the dead. Was it really too much to ask for a break every now and then? Apparently, the answer was yes.
He looked back at Blaire again. She was still slumped against the window, but her crying had stopped. Adrian wanted to sit with her, but he wasn't sure where he stood with her now. He didn't want to risk pushing her away any further, but he wanted to help her through everything that had happened. If she would let him, that is.
Kamilah followed his gaze and nudged his arm. "Go talk to her. She might be more receptive now that she's had some time to think. Just don't push her too far."
Adrian nodded wordlessly. That was the last thing he wanted to do. He made his way to the back of the plane sat in the chair opposite her. He couldn't bring himself to meet Blaire's eyes, though; the shame was too much.
"Hi," she said without turning to him. Her voice was unusually flat and emotionless, a complete contrast to her usual bubbly personality.
"Hi," Adrian replied, forcing a smile. "Are you doing okay?"
"I'm fine." She said with a glance at him, but Adrian could tell she was shaken by Rheya's betrayal and Gaius's unexpected return. He sighed.
"Blaire..." His voice caught in his throat. "I am so sorry I hurt you."
"It's okay, Adrian. I know it wasn't you."
Adrian frowned. It wasn't okay. In fact, it was the farthest thing from okay. Rheya had manipulated him in such a way that killing Blaire been the only thing he wanted at that moment, and he hadn't fought against her. He'd obeyed like a mindless puppet, and to him, that made him just as guilty as Rheya.
"I nearly killed you," he whispered, his emotions threatening to spill over.
Blaire finally turned to look at him. Her eyes were wary, but he could also see a hint of longing in them as if she wanted to be near him, but her instincts told her to stay away. He was proven right when he cautiously reached for her hand, and she visibly flinched away from him. He quickly pulled his hand back and tried to ignore the hurt welling up in his chest. He had no right to feel that way after what he'd done.
"I...I'm sorry, I just..." She stammered.
Adrian shook his head. "It's okay. I understand."
She relaxed slightly, but her eyes never left him. He shifted uncomfortably before meeting her gaze again.
"We're here for you, Blaire. We'll help you however we can." He paused. "And I'll do anything to keep you safe. I know the last time I said that the exact opposite happened, but I mean it this time."
"I know that, Adrian," she said. "It's just...the way she turned you guys against me like that...it was scary. And if I hadn't tapped into my powers when I did..."
She trailed off, and Adrian felt a fresh wave of guilt wash over him. He didn't want to think about what could have happened.
"I just need some time, okay?"
Adrian nodded. "That's fine. Take all the time you need." He looked into her eyes. "Just don't lock us out, okay? We really do care about you."
She nodded silently, and he returned to the front of the plane. He slumped into a chair and ran a hand through his hair. He hated the disconnect he'd felt between him and Blaire. They'd been through so much together over the last year, and Rheya had destroyed it all in one night. She'd severed the relationship he and Blaire had worked hard to build, and now it was at risk of never being repaired. All because she was power-hungry.
Adrian sighed and finally closed his eyes, hoping that sleep would come quickly. He didn't want to think about tonight's events anymore. He didn't want to think about what he'd lost.
He didn't want to think about what had been broken.

The Darkest Hour
Summary: Gaius has finally been defeated, but at a horrible cost. Blaire is dying and there's only one way to save her. Adrian makes a life or death decision that may or may not succeed in saving the woman he loves.
Pairing: Adrian Raines x MC (Blaire)
A/N: Just a little something I thought of after the BB2 finale. I feel like this isn't some of my best work, but I decided to post it anyway. Hopefully it's not as bad as I think it is and you guys enjoy it ^_^
Tag List: @kinda-iconic @adrianadmirer @lilyofchoices @flyawayboo @desiree-0816 @marvelifeforever @tacohead13
Six hours. The longest six hours of Adrian’s life. The wait was excruciatingly painful, and he felt like he was on the verge of insanity. Guilt tore through him at what he’d done, the choice he’d made, but he had to save her. He couldn’t lose her, not after everything they’d been through. He refused to let her die.
Adrian stood guard over the sarcophagus in the Raines Corp basement. He stared at it unblinking; all his senses focused on detecting any signs that Blaire was alive. He was vaguely aware of the others in the room, each of them as grim and somber as him. Kamilah stood against one wall with her head tilted back, and her eyes clouded and distant. Lily sat on the floor nearby with a blank expression and an occasional tear rolling down her cheek. Jax was off in one corner with his head in his hands. He hadn’t spoken since they’d left the museum, and Adrian knew he was feeling immense guilt as it was his sword that Gaius had stabbed through Blaire’s chest. They would have to talk to him later and assure him that it wasn’t his fault.
Besides, Adrian thought bitterly, if there was anyone to blame it was him. He’d promised Blaire that he would protect her, that he would do whatever it took to keep her safe, and he’d failed. He’d been unable to do anything when it had mattered the most, and now Blaire might pay for it with her life.
He thought back to the horrifying moment when Gaius had plunged the sword into Blaire’s chest. The entire world seemed to stop, and Adrian remembered screaming her name as blood seeped through her clothes and spilled from her mouth. He’d fought desperately against Gaius’s hold on him but had been helpless to reach her. He could only watch as Blaire used the last of her strength to force the stake through Gaius’s heart and finally put an end to his tyranny. She’d sacrificed herself to save them. That was how much they meant to her, how much he meant to her. She was willing to die if it meant he was freed from Gaius and his bloody past.
And that’s what made it so painful. Adrian still hadn’t forgiven himself for all the awful things he’d done and the people he’d hurt. He didn’t think he was worth saving, but Blaire had thought otherwise and had made it her mission to break the chains that held him back. That’s how much she’d loved him.
Tears flowed freely down his face, but he didn’t bother to wipe them away. He couldn’t lose her. Adrian didn’t think he could survive without her at this point. The bond they had with each other was something he hadn’t felt since he was with Eleanor. And if that bond broke, it might very well plunge him back into the darkness he’d fought so hard to escape from. Blaire’s death might be his own as he had no idea how he could go on without her.
He didn’t know how much time had passed while he was lost in his inner turmoil, but eventually, a gentle hand came to rest on his shoulder. It was Kamilah. Her usual guarded demeanor was nowhere to be found, and her face was a mixture of worry, sympathy, and sorrow. Adrian still wasn’t sure what kind of relationship Blaire and Kamilah had, but he knew she cared as much about Blaire as he did, and losing her now would haunt both of them for years to come.
“It’s been six hours, Adrian,” she said softly. “We need to open the sarcophagus.”
Adrian looked back at the stone tomb, a knot of dread settling in his stomach. He was afraid of what they would find once they removed the lid. The transformation may not have taken effect, and Blaire might be dead. Or worse, she could have turned Feral and is just waiting for them to give her a way to escape.
“What if it didn’t work? What if she’s dead? Or turned Feral?”
Kamilah hesitated for a moment as if to gather herself before speaking. “If she’s dead, we’ll give her a proper burial. One she deserves. But if she’s Feral…” she trailed off.
“We’ll have to kill her ourselves, won’t we?” Lily asked as she and Jax approached the sarcophagus. Fresh tears glistened in her eyes, and Jax wore an expression of grief and weariness.
“Yes, we will. We can’t let her escape from here,” Kamilah said, her grip tightening on Adrian’s shoulder. “If it comes to that, one of us will have to stake her.”
Adrian felt his heart clench at Kamilah’s words. The thought of potentially having to kill Blaire made him sick, but it would have to be done. Existing as a Feral would be an awful and cruel fate, one that he would never wish on anyone.
They each took up a position around the sarcophagus with wooden stakes in hand. Adrian sent a silent prayer to whatever higher being might be listening before pushing the lid back. He cautiously peered inside to see Blaire lying in the same position as when he’d first placed her on the stone. Her eyes were closed, and her skin had lost some of its color, but it wasn’t the sickly gray of a Feral. He couldn’t tell if her wound had healed as there was too much dried blood on her clothes.
He carefully touched her face and was relieved that her skin was warm. All the tension in his body melted away. She was alive.
“Blaire,” he said quietly. “Wake up.”
For a moment she didn’t move, then he saw her hand twitch and brow creased slightly. Slowly, her eyes opened, and even though he was expecting it, Adrian was still shaken by the red eyes that looked up at him. The idea that she was a vampire now had yet to set in with him.
She stared at him in confusion for a few seconds before recognition dawned on her face.
“Adrian…” Her voice was hoarse, and a small smile played on her lips. The smile he loved so much.
He helped her sit up, and she looked around, taking in her surroundings. She looked at each of them in turn, noting the stakes they held and looked back at him with a growing look of shock and fear.
“Adrian, what…what’s going on…” She stammered, and Adrian felt guilt wash over him again. He stroked her face and stared into her eyes, willing her to understand.
“I’m sorry, Blaire. I had to. It was the only way to save you,” he said as he felt tears welling in his eyes again. She’d had no choice in being Turned, hell she hadn’t even been conscious, and the last thing Adrian wanted was for her to hate him for taking her humanity.
“Save me? From…wha…” She trailed off as she finally took notice of the sarcophagus she was sitting in, and her breath hitched. Adrian helped her out and steadied her when she swayed on her feet. Kamilah placed a calming hand on her shoulder, and Blaire looked at her with wide eyes.
“Blaire, what’s the last thing you remember?”
Blaire paused for a moment to think. “I remember the museum…and Gaius…he-” she stopped mid-sentence and put a hand over her chest where the sword had impaled her. The wound had closed, and realization slowly came to her face. “Gaius stabbed me with a sword. He killed me, didn’t he?”
“He almost did, but we brought you back here,” Jax said. “And now…”
“…I’m a vampire,” Blaire finished for him. Her words hung heavily in the air as the gravity of the situation sunk in.
“We should get out of here,” Kamilah said at length. “Blaire needs to rest, and we have work to do.” She looked at Adrian. “You’ll take care of her?”
Adrian nodded and gently led Blaire out of the basement. The suite on the upper floor was still connected to the building’s power, and it would be the best place for Blaire to recover. She was silent the entire time, and Adrian wondered what was going through her mind. She had to be overwhelmed, given everything that had happened in the last few hours, and Adrian would do whatever he could to help her adjust.
The next few days would be crucial, and he would have to keep a close eye on her at all times. He couldn’t brand her until she fully adjusted to being a vampire, which meant she could still turn Feral at any moment. Adrian would also have to find a blood source for her as she would need to feed soon. But for the moment, all he wanted was to be near her, but he wasn’t sure where he stood with her now. He’d Turned her without her consent, and he couldn’t help but worry that she was angry with him.
The suite was dim and quiet, just as they’d left it when they’d taken off to Europe a few months ago. Blaire sank on to the sofa while Adrian kept his distance and leaned against the kitchen island. There was a long stretch of silence between them before Adrian finally spoke.
“Blaire, I’m sorry. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. I never intended to make this decision for you, but it was the only way to save you.” He took a shaky breath. “I understand if you’re angry about all this.”
“Adrian, I’m not angry,” she said softly. “Honestly, I’m feeling all kinds of emotions right now, but angry isn’t one of them.”
She gestured for him to sit next to her, and he obliged. She rested her head on his shoulder, and Adrian felt a wave of relief wash over him. He’d been so certain that his actions would push her away and he would lose one of the few bright lights in his life.
He looked at her and stroked her face. “I was certain you would hate me. If I’d been able to protect you like I promised, you wouldn’t be in this situation. You would still be human.”
She gazed back at him and took his hand in hers. “ There’s nothing you could ever do that would make me hate you, Adrian. Besides, I meant it when I said I didn’t want to leave you.” She held his hand tighter. “I’m happiest with you. I’m glad you saved my life.”
Adrian smiled and shook his head in wonder. How had he gotten so lucky with her? “You truly are amazing, Blaire. I don’t deserve you.”
She leaned in to kiss him, and Adrian pulled her into his arms. “Stop saying that. You deserve me and so much more. I’ll make you see that one day.”
She kissed him again, and for the first time in a long time, Adrian felt at ease. Gaius was finally gone, which meant he could move forward in life. The woman he loved most was alive and safe in his arms, and he no longer had to worry about losing her. It would take time for things to return to normal and rebuilding the city would be difficult, but the darkest hour had passed, and they could focus on healing.
And for the first time in nearly three hundred years, Adrian felt at peace.

Love Can Conquer All
Summary: Their first night in Paris was a night Adrian knew he would never forget. The night had brought laughter, confessions, and promises, but it had also brought fear and uncertainty for the future.
Pairing: Adrian Raines x MC (Blaire)
A/N: I had hoped to have this fic posted before the latest chapter was released, but I didn’t because I rewrote this so many times. I’m pleased with this for the most part, but I feel like the ending is a bit choppy. This is just some more fluff between Adrian and Blaire and is set near the end of chapter seven.

Adrian couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment he’d fallen in love with Blaire. Maybe it had been a few weeks ago during their dinner at that new restaurant, or perhaps it was the night of Marcel’s Awakening Ball where they had danced together for the first time. And who knows, it could have been the moment he’d walked into her interview nearly a year ago. Regardless of when it had happened, there was no denying the way he felt. He loved her, well and truly.
It had been quite some time since he’d felt this strongly about a woman. After what happened to Celia, Adrian had been afraid to open his heart to someone again, to love again. He had built walls around himself to protect him from more heartbreak and had refused to let anyone in. But then, Blaire had burst into his life and had proceeded to knock down those walls like dominoes. She had sneaked her way into his heart, and before he even knew what happened, he was hers, completely wrapped around her dainty fingers. And honestly, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
He gazed down at Blaire’s sleeping form beside him and admired the way the moonlight cast a gentle glow on her face, making her appear almost angelic. Adrian was tempted to place a kiss on her forehead, but he knew he needed to let her sleep. She needed it after all, while he didn’t. So he resigned himself to watching over her through the night.
Adrian considered himself lucky to have someone like Blaire by his side. There was so much that he loved about her; like the way her eyes sparkled whenever she laughed or smiled. Or her sense of humor that never failed to make him laugh, or her determination to protect the people she cared about. He had recently seen just how viciously protective she could be when they were escaping the underground temple in New York. He’d wanted to stay and fight, but Blaire would have none it. He remembered how fiercely she’d shoved him into the tunnel and told him that she refused to watch him die the same way the Baron had. That was the first time he’d ever heard her raise her voice, and he realized just how afraid she had been of losing him.
But perhaps the thing he loved most about her, is how human she made him feel. She didn’t see him as a monster or a beast like so many others in the past had. She saw him as a kindhearted man; to her, he was simply Adrian. And that was something he was grateful for. The world seemed simpler whenever he was with her, and he could almost forget about his problems. Almost. There were still things she didn’t know about him, secrets that he held close and had no intention of revealing to anyone. But just Blaire’s presence alone put his mind at ease and allowed him to relax for the first time in many years.
And he wanted her to stay by his side. He wanted to protect and love her forever, but he knew that was impossible. She would grow older while he remained the same, and one day, she would die. Adrian hated the thought of not being able to hold her close or hear her voice anymore. He couldn’t imagine life without her now, and he couldn’t lie and say that he hadn’t thought of Turning her on more than one occasion. But he could never bring himself to mention it. A decision like that needed careful consideration, and it wasn’t his place to make that decision.
Blaire had let it slip that she wasn’t opposed to the idea of becoming a vampire, but there were many conversations to be had before a final decision could be made. So many things could go wrong during a transformation; she could easily turn Feral, or she could lose a part of herself in the process that would change her forever. Plus they had no idea what effect a transformation would have on her Bloodkeeper abilities. For all they knew, it might kill her, or it could unlock a dormant power within her that she would be unable to control. It was because of those possibilities, and Gaius’ looming threat, that he’d pushed the topic aside for now. He wanted them to enjoy these moments of tranquility for as long as they could.
Adrian emerged from his thoughts when Blaire stirred beside him. A small whimper escaped from her, and her face had gone from peaceful to distressed. She looked as if she were in pain, and he wondered if she was dreaming or if she was receiving another vision. He was still unsure of what exactly triggered her visions, but she’d told him that sometimes they were painful.
“Adrian….” She murmured his name, and the frown on her face deepened. She sounded like she was on the verge of tears.
Concerned, Adrian gently shook her shoulder to wake her. Her eyes snapped open the moment he touched her and she gasped as she sat up. Her breath was ragged, and her eyes were wide and slightly panicked. Adrian put one hand on her arm, and she turned to look at him.
“Blaire,” he said quietly. “What’s wrong? Is it a vision?”
She stared at him for a moment before reaching out to touch him. Her fingers lightly grazed his face, and she visibly relaxed upon realizing she was fully awake.
“Adrian…you’re okay,” she said in a relieved voice. “You’re still here.”
Adrian frowned. “Of course, I’m still here.” He brushed her hair away from her face. “Blaire, what happened? Was it a vision?”
“No,” she shook her head. “It was a dream, or a nightmare really.” She took hold of his hand and held it tightly, as though he would disappear if she didn’t.
For a few moments, they sat in complete silence. Adrian didn’t like seeing her this way, frightened and vulnerable, and he wondered what she could have possibly dreamed about that had upset her this much. But he didn’t press her for an answer. He’d dealt with his fair share of nightmares and knew how difficult it was to talk about them.
Eventually, she spoke again. “You died, Adrian.”
Adrian’s eyes widened slightly. “I…what?”
A sob escaped her. “You died in my dream. Gaius killed you. The same way he killed the Baron and Lester. And he made me watch.”
Adrian pulled her into his arms, and she cried into his chest. He felt anger rising inside him. Gaius was thousands of miles away, and yet he still had a hold on her, just in her dreams now. And Adrian couldn’t protect her from her nightmares.
“It’s okay, Blaire. I’m right here,” he soothed. “I’m not going anywhere.”
He held her close until her sobs subsided and she pulled away from him. She looked at him with tired eyes, but the fear and panic from earlier had faded. Adrian trailed a hand down her face, and she smiled at him.
“If I could protect you from your nightmares I would,” Adrian said. “Sadly, I can’t do that. But I can and will protect you from the real Gaius. We’ll stop him from hurting anyone else.”
“I know we will. I’m just glad you’re here,” she said. “That dream was so vivid that I couldn’t tell if it was real or not. I couldn’t remember if we were really in Paris or if tonight had actually happened.”
Adrian kissed her forehead. “It’s all real, Blaire. I’m here with you, and I don’t intend to die, especially not by Gaius’s hand.”
She nodded and laid back against her pillow with heavy eyelids. Adrian followed suit and placed a protective arm around her. He reassured her that he would keep watch and she soon drifted off again. He let go when he was certain she wouldn’t wake again.
Adrian let his gaze travel from her to the twinkling lights of Paris outside the window. Seeing Blaire so distraught over the thought that she might lose him only made Adrian more determined to defeat Gaius once and for all. He wouldn’t allow his maker to destroy everything he held dear, especially not the woman he cherished the most. He vowed right then and there that he would do whatever it took beat Gaius and put an end to the bloodshed and death.
He looked at Blaire again and found himself smiling. He thought back to their conversation at the museum about war, death, and love. Adrian’s views had been rather cynical, a direct result of his nearly three hundred years of living. But now, he thought maybe Blaire and Jax were right.
Maybe love can conquer all.

You’re More Than That
Summary: After rescuing her from Gaius and Jameson, Adrian takes Blaire back to his penthouse and attempts to help her recover from the ordeal. But he's troubled by how defeated and hopeless she feels and wonders just how far into her mind did Gaius get?
Pairing: Adrian Raines x MC (Blaire)
A/N: This is my first Bloodbound fic and I’m pretty happy with the way this turned out. Takes place in Bloodbound II, just after Blaire has been rescued by Adrian and Kamilah.
“I’m tired of being a burden to you.”
Adrian lay quietly beside Blaire and watched her sleep. That one sentence kept repeating in his mind, and he wondered how she could ever think she was a burden to him or anyone for that matter. How long had she felt like that? And why hadn’t he ever noticed?
He stroked her face gently and smiled slightly when she unconsciously leaned into his touch. He’d known Blaire for almost a year now, and he’d never seen her as anything but a strong, confident, and beautiful woman who deserved the world. He saw the woman who had bravely stepped into his dangerous world and never looked back. The woman who had risked her life to save him when he’d been facing death after his trial. The woman who had fought by his side after discovering Vega and Nicole’s treachery. The woman he’d fallen hopelessly in love with. She was the farthest thing from a burden, and yet, that’s how she saw herself.
Adrian wondered what else Jameson and Gaius had done to her to make her doubt herself like that. When he’d found her in Jameson’s chambers, he’d been relieved that she was physically unharmed, but he’d seen the fear in her eyes and had held her trembling form in his arms. He had witnessed a side of Blaire that she had never let him see before. She had been genuinely afraid of what she had seen and learned about herself, that she might not be human, and Adrian didn’t know how to help her.
He’d been around for nearly three hundred years, but not once had he ever heard of a Bloodkeeper. According to Blaire, it was a psychic who shared the vampire bloodline and could access the memories of every vampire that ever lived, and could probably do much more than that. With that information, Adrian could understand why she was scared. That sounded like a lot of untapped power for one person to have.
And Gaius knew she had this ability and had already exploited it for his own gain. Adrian grit his teeth in anger and felt his fangs descend slightly. The fact that Gaius had taken her, touched her, and used her was enough to make his blood rage. Adrian berated himself for not being there. He should have taken her home last night instead of letting her go alone. He should have been there to protect her.
“Adrian…”
Blaire’s sleep filled voice broke him out of his angry thoughts. He met her gaze, and she reached out and touched his face.
“What’s wrong?”
He frowned slightly, confused as to what she meant. “Nothing’s wrong.”
“Yes, there is. Your eyes are red. That only happens when you’re agitated.”
Adrian caught his reflection in the mirror, and his eyes indeed had turned red. He willed his growing anger away and returned his gaze to Blaire.
“You shouldn’t have gone through that ordeal last night. I should have been there.”
Blaire shook her head. “Adrian, there was no way you could have known that was going to happen. I’m okay because you found me.”
Adrian sighed. “It’s just the fact that Gaius was anywhere near you that’s bothering me. He’s incredibly dangerous and unpredictable. Not to mention he’s a master at manipulation.”
“Yeah, I picked up on that. But aside from Jameson forcing his way into my head, they didn’t hurt me.”
“That’s also something that’s bothering me. Jameson has powerful psychic abilities, and he can influence people’s minds with ease.” He stared into her eyes, his brow furrowed in concern. “Are you certain he didn’t do anything else to you?”
Now it was Blaire’s turn to frown in confusion. “What do you mean?”
He sat up beside her and took her hand in his. “Blaire, why would you ever think you were a burden to us? To me?”
She looked away from him, and for a moment he thought she wasn’t going to answer him. Then she too sat up and brought her knees to her chest.
“That’s just how I feel,” she said quietly. “I had no way of defending myself last night. I got lucky that all they wanted was a memory. We both know I wouldn’t have stood a chance if they had decided to hurt me. All I was capable of was waiting for you and Kamilah to find me.”
Adrian hated hearing her talk like that. She was so much more than she gave herself credit for. She was an invaluable member of their ragtag group, and they all cared about her deeply, Adrian especially. When he’d gotten her text for help, he’d dropped everything to get to her. He’d stormed into her apartment, all his senses primed for a fight, only to find her gone without a trace. He’d immediately thought the worst and the fear of losing her had almost sent him into a panic. He needed her in his life, and he would be damned if he let her believe she was a burden.
He gently turned her face to look at him, and he saw tears glistening in her eyes. He wiped them away. “Blaire, do you realize that if it weren’t for you, I would be dead right now? Vega and the Baron would have thrown me to the sun if it hadn’t been for your quick thinking and your refusal to accept the Council’s vote. Do you know how grateful I am for that? For you?”
She stared wide-eyed at him, shocked by his admission.
“And when my serum backfired on me, you could have run away. You could have left right then and there, but you stayed and brought me back to my senses. Who knows what would have happened if you hadn’t been there.”
Blaire was at a loss for words. She honestly hadn’t thought much about those moments; to her, she had just been doing the right thing. She’d never thought about how much her actions would affect Adrian, and she certainly never thought they would mean this much to him.
“Adrian…” She began but stopped when their foreheads touched, and she looked into his dark eyes. There was some emotion there, but she couldn’t place it. Then he kissed her. His lips were soft against hers, and at that moment, she was able to name the emotion she’d seen in his eyes.
“Blaire, I love you. More than you know and hearing you talk about yourself like that is painful. Please, don’t ever think you’re not important or that you’re not strong, because you are. You mean the world to me, and you will never be a burden.”
The tears welled up in Blaire’s eyes again, and she threw her arms around Adrian and buried her face in his chest. He wrapped his strong arms around her and held her close.
“I’m sorry, Adrian,” she cried. “I never meant for you to worry like this. I was just scared. I don’t know what I am or what these powers are. I was terrified that I would never see you again.”
Adrian stroked her hair and reassured her that it was okay. “It’s okay, Blaire. I’m here. We’ll figure this out, okay?”
Blaire pulled away from him and dried her eyes. “Okay.”
“Just remember we’re all here for you. Me, Kamilah, Lily, Jax, we all care about you, and we won’t leave you. I promise.”
Blaire smiled. “I know.”
“Good,” he kissed her forehead. “You should get some sleep. You’ll need it for the next few days.”
Blaire crawled back under the covers and Adrian followed suit. He pulled her close, and she rested her head on his chest, sinking into his embrace.
“Adrian?” She said after a moment.
“Hmm?”
“Just so you know, I love you too.”
