Archimedes Sting, 2025. Archimedes Defense and Up.Fi have collaborated to create a military version of Tesla's Cybertruck. Three different versions are planned including one with an AMP Drive G125TM aviation-derived 800V genset capable running on a variety of fuels and charging the Cybertruck up to 125 kW. There will be a Baja version, the Sting Protector that comes with amour plating and the Sting APC that has additional protection against IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) as well as mine protection.

1938 Mercedes-Benz W154

In September 1936, the AIACR (Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus), the governing body of motor racing, set the new Grand Prix regulations effective from 1938. Key stipulations included a maximum engine displacement of three liters for supercharged engines and 4.5 liters for naturally aspirated engines, with a minimum car weight ranging from 400 to 850 kilograms, depending on engine size.

By the end of the 1937 season, Mercedes-Benz engineers were already hard at work developing the new W154, exploring various ideas, including a naturally aspirated engine with a W24 configuration, a rear-mounted engine, direct fuel injection, and fully streamlined bodies. Ultimately, due to heat management considerations, they opted for an in-house developed 60-degree V12 engine designed by Albert Heess. This engine mirrored the displacement characteristics of the 1924 supercharged two-liter M 2 L 8 engine, with each of its 12 cylinders displacing 250 cc. Using glycol as a coolant allowed temperatures to reach up to 125°C. The engine featured four overhead camshafts operating 48 valves via forked rocker arms, with three cylinders combined under welded coolant jackets, and non-removable heads. It had a high-capacity lubrication system, circulating 100 liters of oil per minute, and initially utilized two single-stage superchargers, later replaced by a more efficient two-stage supercharger in 1939.

The first prototype engine ran on the test bench in January 1938, and by February 7, it had achieved a nearly trouble-free test run, producing 427 hp (314 kW) at 8,000 rpm. During the first half of the season, drivers such as Caracciola, Lang, von Brauchitsch, and Seaman had access to 430 hp (316 kW), which later increased to over 468 hp (344 kW). At the Reims circuit, Hermann Lang's W154 was equipped with the most powerful version, delivering 474 hp (349 kW) and reaching 283 km/h (176 mph) on the straights. Notably, the W154 was the first Mercedes-Benz racing car to feature a five-speed gearbox.

Max Wagner, tasked with designing the suspension, had an easier job than his counterparts working on the engine. He retained much of the advanced chassis architecture from the previous year's W125 but enhanced the torsional rigidity of the frame by 30 percent. The V12 engine was mounted low and at an angle, with the carburetor air intakes extending through the expanded radiator grille.

The driver sat to the right of the propeller shaft, and the W154's sleek body sat close to the ground, lower than the tops of its tires. This design gave the car a dynamic appearance and a low center of gravity. Both Manfred von Brauchitsch and Richard Seaman, whose technical insights were highly valued by Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, praised the car's excellent handling.

The W154 became the most successful Silver Arrow of its era. Rudolf Caracciola secured the 1938 European Championship title (as the World Championship did not yet exist), and the W154 won three of the four Grand Prix races that counted towards the championship.

To ensure proper weight distribution, a saddle tank was installed above the driver's legs. In 1939, the addition of a two-stage supercharger boosted the V12 engine, now named the M163, to 483 hp (355 kW) at 7,800 rpm. Despite the AIACR's efforts to curb the speed of Grand Prix cars, the new three-liter formula cars matched the lap times of the 1937 750-kg formula cars, demonstrating that their attempt was largely unsuccessful. Over the winter of 1938-39, the W154 saw several refinements, including a higher cowl line around the cockpit for improved driver safety and a small, streamlined instrument panel mounted to the saddle tank. As per Uhlenhaut’s philosophy, only essential information was displayed, centered around a large tachometer flanked by water and oil temperature gauges, ensuring the driver wasn't overwhelmed by unnecessary data.

Sebastian Vettel in the Porsche 963

Sebastian Vettel has prepared meticulously for his stint with the hybrid prototype. On 14 March, the 53-time Formula 1 race winner paid a visit to the FIA WEC team at the Porsche Penske Motorsport facility in Mannheim. One day later, the Heppenheim native completed an extensive simulator session at the Porsche Motorsport Centre in Flacht and familiarised himself with the special features and complex controls of the Le Mans race car. This was followed on 21 March by the first familiarisation kilometres with the Porsche 963 on the in-house test track at the Weissach Development Centre. In dry weather with tarmac temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius and 10 to 13 degrees cool air, the F1 champion completed almost two Grand Prix distances in Aragón without any problems. "Of course, I also keep an eye on other motorsport disciplines and know many drivers who are active in the WEC and Le Mans. At some point, my curiosity was so great that I had the idea of trying it out myself. Porsche gave me the opportunity to test a current hypercar with the 963," says Sebastian Vettel. Finally now getting to shill some other fics I read from the recent 4/13 crop, and y'all. Y'all. Have I got the Rosemary for you.

Do not get taken in by the anodyne simplicity of the summary here. This fic is a masterclass, a real love letter to the Snarky Broads. It covers so much ground it makes 15 kw seem short in comparison to what I learned about the characters by reading it. The most I think I can say other than just "read it" is that I was totally along for the ride the whole time, and at no point was I totally sure either what would come next on this psychological journey or where it was going to end up. Not because I didn't see the "Angst with a Happy Ending" tag, although I didn't, but because it was that immersive and convincing. Even if you are not die-hard Rosemary fans as the author and myself are (full disclosure), I think there is plenty to get excited about.

I'm also very excited about there being a series called "epilogues minus epilogues" to which this fic belongs. It suggests there will be possibly quite a bit more where this came from.

Tips for pronouncing Dawntrail placenames

A lot of streamers are commenting on how "hard" the place and personal names in the new FFXIV expansion are to pronounce, as they are largely based on indigenous American languages, and specifically languages of Central and South America.

Folks, I want to be clear: this shit is not hard if you just take a moment to learn.

Most of these languages have spelling rules that were imposed by the Spanish. Because of this history, they tend to use the Latin alphabet, often with specific "Spanish-y" features. Here are some common letters and letter combinations in traditional Spanish-influenced writing: HU/UH = "w" J = "h" TL = "tl" but with the "l" silent/airy TZ = "ts" X = "sh" Y = "y" (not the Spanish sound, which is closer to "zh") Z = "s" (not "z")

For certain languages, you will also see C or QU for a hard "k" sound (the latter before I or E, as in Spanish), but CU for "kw" before other vowels. Likewise LL is often a "ly" sound, and Ñ is "ny".

That said, many modern ways of writing these languages have discarded some of the Spanish-isms or added additional markings to differentiate sounds that Spanish does not have. They may still use J and X, for example, but will use W and H for the same sounds as in English. They also tend to use K instead of C/QU.

When you see an apostrophe after a voiceless consonant (P', T', CH', K') this indicates an ejective; these are sounds we don't have in European languages, the way to produce them is to close the back of your throat (like the catch in the middle of "uh-oh" or the 'okina in "Hawai'i") at the same time as you say the letter. This should produce a pop rather than a puff of air as is normal in English

I would assume that "Yak T'el" uses an ejective.

Likewise in many South American languages, there is a Q sound that is much like the Q (qaf) in Arabic - it's like a K but pronounced much further back in the throat, with the back of the tongue hitting the uvula. If you speak French or German or European Hebrew, it's like the R sound, but instead of gargling, you just bounce your tongue against the back of your throat.

That said, it's okay to pronounce T' as "t" or QE as "ke" if the sounds aren't in your native language. Go ahead and pronounce "Yak T'el" like YOCK-TELL or YAK-TELL if you like.

At the end of the day it boils down to this: if you can pronounce "Fourchenault Leveilleur", you can pronounce "Tuliyollal" or "Ihuykatumu" or "Urqopacha".

After recovering from sticker shock from our electric bills (Thanks Duke Energy), I started looking at other rate plans they offer.

Particularly the Time of Use (TOU) plans.

Most plans seem to only for the Duke loyalists who have ONLY electric heat and water heaters. Some also include cooking.

So there remains one TOU plan available to us.

All TOUs are pretty onerous, but this one is especially special. Not only do we have to be mindful of what we are using at any particular time, but there are also two Demand Charges.

Over the month, the half hour where we used the most electricity, at any time of day, gets charged $4.24 per kW. In addition, another $2.22 per kW is charged for the highest usage during the “On-Peak Period, which is three hours of the day (subject to change) where the rates are highest anyway.

So to compare apples to oranges, I’m building spreadsheets to compare our current rate plan with this one. Duke Energy has a rate comparison tool on their web site, but it is currently down. I guess they are still loading the new rates into it.

One thing I’ve realized: going to a TOU plan means you go from living in a house to operating a house.

General Reading for Evan June 13 2024

~I have been trying a system of shuffling my major deck and then shuffling my major/minor deck to get 1 or 2 cards to support it. It's been interesting. I prefer it because it helps me focus. If I get more minor cards than major, I will shuffle and ask for more and make it even. Here I was able to pull 1 major/1 Minor, pulling additional cards for better clarity. (some majors came out). I don't try to separate them. I figured let the cards fall where they may.

What is Evan's general energy today

Scribe/9 of Pents

My Scribe is one of my bonus cards. She is writing in her open journal with her pink feather quill pen. She is funky, fun and creative. Could this signify a new script or possibly a play that will be upcoming? Evan says he has tried writing screenplays himself, so maybe he is going to try to finish something he has started. This could also signify writing your own story in life. Manifesting what you want. Filling in your own pages, figuratively speaking. The 9P suggests solo pleasures and taking time for yourself and also financial gain and luxury. A new project of some sorts could be in his future. I also want to mention that Evan journals. So, possibly this could mean he is journaling when he's alone to get his thoughts in order.

Gray/King of Wands

Gray for me signifies that something is hazy or unclear. Maybe that "gray area" where it's not straightforward. Also a slow progress. The KW represents a bold, powerful leader with charm and courage. I feel like this is either work related, where he is not sure if he tries to maybe write on his own, he would be taken seriously. Or it could mean he is having major self doubt and doesn't feel adequate in some way.

Moon/King of Cups Rev.

I struggled with this one a bit. The moon can represent unforseen problems, but can also be trust in your own intuition. But the KC (R) fake, serious, stiffled. I might just be as simple as him struggling to trust his intuition and it's blocking him from following his heart. He might not trust he can do the things he dreams of doing, like writing for instance. Or that he may not even get anywhere with it.

Chariot/4 of Wands

I liked these cards coming out together for him. The Chariot represents action and change or a journey. The 4W represents a homecoming or reunion. Celebrating with friends and family(!) He is probably going to take some much needed time to go home and see his family. Shamrock touched awhile back on there possibly being a family event coming up. (Of course, my first thought was "is he going to take Nat!!?")

Tower/4 of Cups Rev.

I had to look into this one a bit more because they are not the greatest vibe when you look at them. But then I saw the Tower representing an "a-ha" moment, a clean slate, a path out of suffering. As opposed to ruin and unwanted changes. The 4C (R) represents instability, scattered, unhinged. I take this as possible change of attitude towards recent events in his life. Maybe being able to let some suffering, that he may be causing himself, go. Maybe his friends and family back home will help him (!).

Temperance/5 of Cups Rev.

Balance, self control, harmony and patience/Emotional freedom and overcoming challenges. I just see him freeing himself somewhat of emotional turmoil he has possibly been living in lately. Maybe to do with love or his career. Honestly, maybe he is starting to achieve this with Nat?

Sun/7 of Cups

Joyous outcome, success,material happiness/too many choices, commitment issues. I believe this may be career related. I could see stacks of scripts sitting on a coffee table and Evan sitting on his (blue, just kidding) couch ready to dive in. He has to be choosy and it might be hard for him to decide what to pursue.

Justice/4 of Swords

Cause and effect, win-win situation, truth comes out (!)/ Retreat, rest, recovery, solitude. Really, I don't know. This could touch on the confession one of the readers (shamrock?, experienced?) saw. Whatever is going to come to light will be a win-win situation for Evan and the other party involved. He will be able to rest in solitude and recover.

Strength/7 of Wand Rev.

Unconditional self love, self respect and courage (second time seen)/Surrender, release. I think he's trying to let go of the past and figuring out that he deserves good things in his life. Finding the courage to reach that conclusion. He has to work on himself. Can't love others if you can't love yourself.

The Hanged Man/Tower

One of the instances of my majors wanting to come through for clarity. In this case I see him possibly seeing things from a different perspective and having clarity. The tower represents unwanted changes and ruin. He will either work to prevent that or when the destruction hits he will realize he can only go up from there.

High Priestess/Ace of Pents

In my cards the high priestess has blood pouring from her third eye. It is heavily based on intuition. The AP represents new job, raise, promotion, new income investment. As I'm writing this I am wondering if this means a play as it is something he hasn't done much of and would generate a new income or an investment for him. (Someone saw this recently, admin?) Maybe a new TV show? I feel like he needs to follow his intuition and he will be successful.

Star/5 of Swords

The Star brings renewal, hope and inner clarity. It also means "being in the spotlight." However, 5S is not a great card on its own. Bully, theft, abusive relationship. However, together I feel like this could mean he is either letting go of the past romantic baggage, or maybe this has something to do with his current romantic life. He was definitely put into the spotlight. It could be that he is getting backlash about how him and Nat met from someone. Maybe he is going to decide to ignore the haters!! Maybe this means he is helping Nat navigate through all the online bullying. (Although she seems to be holding her own, but we don't know how she really feels)

Hermit(!)/The World

Our hermit Ev over here. This man sure enjoys his solitude (don't worry Ev, I'm introverted too😘). A quest for self clarity and personal truth. Completing a lesson or goal. Possible travel. This could be a sneak into his future. What cycle will he be completing then? If he's alone, is it a relationship ending due to him traveling for work or other reasons? I stopped here as the world represents the end of the fools journey.

I then decided to ask a few questions about where he will be by the end of 2024

Love: Wheel of Fortune/3 of Cups

Changes in a relationship that could be good or bad. Good friends becoming romantic. I asked if this is about Nat and the card I received is a Yes card. The 5 of wands (but, holy shit didn't shamrock get this?) I got "yes, but only if you can work hard to resolve conflict" Pretty self explained.

Career: Queen of Pents/Ace of Wands Rev.

I see a talented business partner, mentor. The queen is an older, motherly type (!) I actually looked at career for these cards. I was wondering if this could be a female director co-star. I wondered if it might be Kate or Niecy again. When I pulled cards to clarify I got Ace of Wands (R) which told me it is not either of those. But, the I got the Hierophant so I think it will be someone seasoned and "traditional. " Possibly someone with a name we recognize but hasn't worked with Evan in the past. He went to see a play recently with a female director. My mind keeps going to plays. I don't know if this has anything to do with it. But he could be scouting plays. Maybe he has had offers from various play directors and is trying to decide who he wants to work with.

I asked about the state of his mental health by the end of the year: King of Cups Rev./2 of Cups/ 9 of Swords Rev.

To put it in a nutshell, I saw him coming out of darkness. KC (R) can mean he's been moody and cold to certain people. Using manipulation to get what he wants. But he will develop deeper emotional connections and bonds, communicate honestly with loved ones and learn to express his feelings. He will find clarity and hope. This could be due to seeking professional help or looking to his friends and family for help. Possibly Nat? No matter how he gets there he will reach a turning point for the better!
