It’s safe to say that we could all use a little cheer and comfort right now, and what better way to do so than through fangirling over all the bookish news?! While I admit that I’ve been spending a bit too much time on my phone and social media lately, one perk has been staying up to date on so many cover reveals and upcoming releases. I’ve dedicated a bookmark collection on Instagram for new books and covers. Today I’ll be sharing my favorite cover reveals and new book announcements from the past few weeks.
Cover Reveals
Snapped (Playbook #4) by Alexa Martin – Because of my love for the Playbook series, I get excited for any sort of Alexa Martin book news. This cover really compliments the others, and I love the gold football barrette.
The Secret Life of Addie La Rue by V.E. Schwab – I really like the cover for V.E. Schwab’s October 2020 adult release, but I think I was expecting more? I had hoped for some sort of illustration with a woman on the cover in the style of the new Vicious and Vengeful covers. I’m interested to see if the U.K. edition will have a different cover.
Book Announcements & Deals
The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberely and Austin Siegemund-Broka – I’m loving this trend of YA authors writing adult contemporary romances- Sandhya Menon’s Make Up Break Up and Rachel Lynn Solomon’s The Ex Talk are also on this list- and I think this author duo will absolutely slay the game. I also love how it follows a co-author duo!
THE NEWS IS OUT!!! Austin and I are so excited to share that we’re writing an adult romance for @KristineESwartz at @BerkleyRomance. Co-writing is the heart of our career, and now, it’s the heart of THE ROUGHEST DRAFT: pic.twitter.com/nv4etIaeOO
— Emily Wibberley (@Wibbs_Ink) March 9, 2020
Once More with Chutzpah by Haley Neil – This YA debut is slated for Fall 2021 and will follow twins who travel through Israel during their senior year of high school.
It feels wild to have good news right now but I am unbelievably excited to announce that my debut, a Birthright YA, is coming your way Fall 2021!
All of my love to my amazing agent @laurenspieller and my editor (!!!!!) @allisonm610 for helping this dream come true 💕 pic.twitter.com/wV9LqHZDYk
— Haley Neil (@tweetinghaley) March 19, 2020
What’s Not to Love by Emily Wibberely and Austin Siegemund-Broka – This roundup would not be complete without a second update from Wibbroka! This 2021 YA release is an enemies-to-lovers romance following Alison and Ethan’s rivalry, as both have their hearts set on Harvard and destroying each other… until they’re forced to work together and things get very complicated. I’m hoping that the cover reveal will come soon.
IT’S HAPPENING AND WE’RE EXCITED
WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE a.k.a. #Wibbroka4, our YA Hating Game, is
🔥enemies to lovers (you haven’t seen nothing from Cam + Brendan yet) 🔥about what you’ll remember from high school and what you won’t 🔥a swoonfest
details to come. for now… https://t.co/BEAbK2oK3I pic.twitter.com/4s7iLJAHcW
— Austin Siegemund-Broka (@ASiegemundBroka) February 3, 2020
A Sky Beyond the Storm by Sabaa Tahir – I’m sure everyone and their mother knows and is excited about this one, but it was announced that the fourth & final book in the Ember in the Ashes series, A Sky Beyond the Storm, will be released on December 4th, 2020. I’m putting this one on here in extra motivation for be to finally pick up An Ember in the Ashes this year.
I’m hoping to make this post a regular feature on the blog!
What bookish news has made you fangirl lately? Anything that I mentioned? Anything I missed? Share in the comments!
Bookish News Roundup 1: Cover Reveals & Upcoming Releases It’s safe to say that we could all use a little cheer and comfort right now, and what better way to do so than through fangirling over all the bookish news?!

South Sudan
(Posted June 22, 2017)
I learned two difficult bits of info shortly upon arrival in South Sudan.
First my luggage didn’t follow me — even with the overnight in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Upon waiting for all the luggage to be taken off the flight, I found a person behind a lectern who seemed to be taking notes on a number of bags that didn’t arrive. He didn’t appear to have any credentials and wasn’t wearing a uniform indicating he was even with one of the airlines, so I didn’t carry a lot of hope that my large 90L backpack would re-appear. Unfortunately, my hosts, the Kandels, were outside this area, so I didn’t have anyone to help translate or guide the process. They were also wondering what was taking me so long; though, I was able to get their attention by sight through the exit while waiting in line. We decided to go back to the airport to check for the luggage on the next flight from Ethiopian Airlines. Through much of the day, I was making mental notes of what I would need to buy to finish my travels as I wasn’t very hopeful the luggage would find me. It did come on the next flight, and I was greatly relieved. When that second flight arrived, however, the airport was packed with members of the Sudanese Peoples’ Liberation Army (SPLA), which left us with a lot of unease.
The second bit was much more difficult news. After arriving at the airport, I met Lynn and Sharon Kandel (PCUSA Mission Co-Workers) outside the airport, and we took a taxi to where they stay. Upon arriving at the gate visible above, they noted what had happened the morning previous. The building where they stay is a horseshoe-shaped building; I only show one long side of the horseshoe. While Lynn was away, Sharon heard many gunshots from the apartment in which they stay. This building (and other properties in Juba) are owned by Eritreans. Unfortunately, they took the same route among their properties and with similar timing as they do regularly to gather money from the various properties. When they arrived at this property, they were rushed by two gunmen who shot into the vehicle right at the gate and snatched the money. Three of the four people in the vehicle were killed and one was in the hospital. As the taxi driver was dropping us there, one of my hosts asked me to look down at the loose gravel. It had just been placed there to cover the blood from the incident. As expected, the mood in the complex was subdued and of mourning. The place was and continued to be guarded by multiple guards and has razor wire around it. War was still going on in the north of the country, and NGOs and the U.N. were regularly reporting violent thefts in Juba. While I was there, we received a well-sourced report that a U.N. convoy of 10 trucks was ambushed just outside Juba. Incidents were happening daily from well-sourced reports.
We struggled a bit to determine how best to get around the city considering the violence. The Kandels recommended we use public transportation instead of taxis believing this would make us less of a target. Many of the events were targeting people who might have money, and we believed they’d be less likely to identify us on public transportation and might think we have less money if we were taking mini-buses and similar transportation. This worked out well, and we generally didn’t have to curtail our movement. I did hear of locals even who had suffered substantial injury because they were robbed — including a seminary student whom I met.
The Kandels were wonderful hosts and arranged that I would stay at Leisa Wagstaff’s apartment while she was back in the States recovering from an injury. I am so thankful to Leisa for offering such hospitality to a total stranger!
I was reminded of my work building the duplex in Zambia as Lynn and I shared notes on experiences building. Lynn is overseeing the building of a classroom building for a school in Juba.
The students at the school were more than willing to pose for a photo and with gusto!
I had an opportunity, also, to visit Nile Theological Seminary in Juba and even to lead a class (unexpectedly and without preparation). We had a great discussion about the challenges in South Sudan, life in Zambia, and the United States. We also discussed this in the context of scripture. Nile Theological Seminary is in great need of lecturers, and they invited me to come back to teach for a time — or to find other theologians able to do the same.
The seminary had recently moved to Juba. It was previously located in the north of South Sudan in the city of Malakal. War has been much more prevalent in this area recently, and one of the factions came into the seminary complex and burned most of the buildings. Miraculously, the library was largely saved and books were not stolen! The church, however, didn’t have a way to get the books to Juba to be kept safe. Fortunately, a person who had access to trucks in Juba but had been estranged from the church made a truck available. Books were brought to Juba and are now available in the rented seminary complex. This is a wonderful image of the gift of reconciliation in the work of the church!
I, also, had an opportunity to visit the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan headquarters and to meet staff and leadership there. I was blessed in that the Treasurer General and Acting Secretary General wrote a letter to the embassy on my behalf asking that a visa be granted for me while I was in Zimbabwe. He did this at the last minute when we learned this would be required. He also named me as “important man of God.” I think I might use this as a title in the future. :)
One night, we joined other expats doing ministry in Juba (and locals) to have dinner on the roof of the James Hotel. I was impressed with the view and how green Juba was. I must have been very used to how dry Zambia and other countries nearby were that time of year.
As we were nearly finished with our meal, the driver called one of the other members of our party. He had just recently learned the president was going to make a major announcement any minute. The driver was worried about getting back into compound as soon as possible in case the city erupted in chaos and violence. Juba (and much of the country) was generally on edge. We made our way back to the residence quickly. We learned the next morning the president had unilaterally decided to divide the country into 28 states out of the existing 10 states. This was very controversial among the warring tribes. The U.N. and regional powers were intending to start meetings with the factions in November to try to resolve this issue, and it seemed the government wanted to pre-empt this work. Fortunately, violence didn’t seem any worse than normal days.
Finally, I had the opportunity to have dinner with the Kandels and Nancy McGaughey along the Nile River. I had a wonderful time with our various mission co-workers and partners in South Sudan!

STUDIO SAMUEL HONORS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY AND CELEBRATES THE COURAGE OF YOUNG GIRLS BEING BOLD FOR CHANGE
100th Girl Entered Studio Samuel’s Training for Tomorrow Program and New Computer Lab Completed for Coding Curriculum
Studio Samuel Expands US-based Board of Directors
New York/Addis Ababa-based NGO and non-profit organization Studio Samuel, which operates with the mission of providing life skills to vulnerable young women in Ethiopia, celebrates International Women’s Day (March 8) and shares the IWD messaging advocating for a better working world, one that is more inclusive and gender equal, and being bold for change.
Studio Samuel’s flagship program Training for Tomorrow prepares adolescent girls living in poverty with critical skills, and opens pathways for the girls to realize their potential and become self-reliant. Training for Tomorrow launched in 2015 with 25 girls and kicked off 2017 with the 100th girl entering. The program is held after school and on weekends at Studio Samuel’s Training Center and includes occupational training, counseling, mentoring, computer programming, karate classes and access to healthcare. Recently Studio Samuel completed work on its new computer lab, made possible through grants from The White Feather Foundation and GO Campaign. The coding course is a favorite among the girls and helps build vital skills, including problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.
Thus far Studio Samuel’s Training for Tomorrow program has seen 94% of students elevate performance at their respective schools. Further evidence of the impact is seen with two girls having recently secured scholarships to attend college.
Studio Samuel kicked off 2017 with a restructuring of its US-based team, and welcomed three new women to the Board of Directors, with two additional appointments to follow soon. Further information on the Studio Samuel Board is here. Newly appointed Chair, Lynn Hazan, who has served on the advisory board the past four years, adds: “For me, the time is now to get involved on a deeper level and support a mission aligned with lifting girls and women. I’ve seen the impact in girls’ lives through Studio Samuel’s work and now as Chair, I’m excited to help lead this team even further.”
Studio Samuel “About Us” | View Here

The organization stands to make an impact with women, not just for women - and most importantly with the local communities, not over them.” -Philanthropist, Photographer & Musician, Julian Lennon
“Supporting the girl means impacting the community at large. Educating the girl means educating the community while breaking through to a future generation. I applaud Studio Samuel.”
- beloved Ethiopian singer, Gigi
“Organizations like Studio Samuel Foundation are critical to helping educate women and giving them the skills and confidence to improve their livelihoods and those of their families.” - Sheryl WuDunn, co-creator of Half The Sky Movement
