Today's Topic: Why Some Animals Eat Their Own Kind! Although primarily herbivorous, chimpanzees enjoy eating meat occasionally, hunting for monkeys and bush pigs. Their tastes can be even closer to home, however. We may not like to think of our closest animal relatives indulging in something so gruesome but they sometimes feed on their own too. This primarily takes the form of eating newborn infants. It is thought that male chimpanzees do this when they don’t think they are the father, to free up breeding opportunities for new females, and to outcompete other males. Thank you for watching! The Benefits and Limits of Urban Tree Planting for Environmental and Human Health
Many of the world’s major cities have implemented tree planting programs based on assumed environmental and social benefits of urban forests. Recent studies have increasingly tested these assumptions and provide empirical evidence for the contributions of tree planting programs, as well as their feasibility and limits, for solving or mitigating urban environmental and social issues. We propose that current evidence supports local cooling, stormwater absorption, and health benefits of urban trees for local residents. However, the potential for urban trees to appreciably mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution over a wide array of sites and environmental conditions is limited. Consequently, urban trees appear to be more promising for climate and pollution adaptationstrategies than mitigation strategies. In large part, this is due to space constraints limiting the extent of urban tree canopies relative to the current magnitude of emissions. The most promising environmental and health impacts of urban trees are those that can be realized with well-stewarded tree planting and localized design interventions at site to municipal scales. Tree planting at these scales has documented benefits on local climate and health, which can be maximized through targeted site design followed by monitoring, adaptive management, and studies of long-term eco-evolutionary dynamics.

Ocean Acidification: Building a Path Toward Adaptation in the Arctic
http://oceanacidification.noaa.gov/AboutUs/AreasofFocus/AdaptationStrategies/Management/TabId/2803/ArtMID/13546/ArticleID/12070/Ocean-Acidification-Building-a-Path-Toward-Adaptation-in-the-Arctic.aspx
Source: oceanacidification.noaa.gov
NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is a United States government agency that focuses on the conditions of the oceans and atmosphere. As a scientific agency, it aims to inform the public about important the environment and manage resources for the betterment of global societies, economies, and our environment.
The article discussed how ocean acidification in Arctic waters are undergoing changes that will threaten the livelihoods and well-being of the Arctic communities in the coming decades. Due to the absorbance of rampant carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into cold Arctic waters, animals from all levels of the food chain will undergo potentially irreversible damage, causing alarm for the indigenous communities who will be most directly and gravely impacted. NOAA provided some specific examples, such as chemical changes in the water that threaten the ability of animals to build and maintain skeletons and shells. The potential detrimental economic and sociocultural ramifications inspired a coalition of economists, scientists and stakeholders to try to have some sort of plan moving forward concerning societal vulnerabilities and changes due to the changing oceans. The coalition is striving to provide indigenous communities with information and therefore support so that they “have the information to build bottom-up adaptation planning.”
The article from NOAA connects to the report “Rising Carbon Dioxide Levels Threaten to Permanently Disrupt Vital Ocean Bacteria” in Project Censored. The report discussed how the damage done to one ocean bacteria in particular, Trichodesmium, is detrimental to the health and function of the ocean as a whole. The bacteria is responsible for converting nitrogen gas into materials that can be used by all forms of sea life to grow and live; however, Trichodesmium that is exposed to increased levels of carbon dioxide goes into “reproductive overdrive,” causing it to consume an increased amount of nutrients like iron and phosphorus and depleting those resources from other organisms in the ocean. This leads to the chain effect of sea life that is damaged.
