Godd save us from the “Experts”

Went to an auction in the North - Irvinestown, a couple weeks ago. Fairly ordinary, a few nice things, and this frame hanging on the living room wall. I glanced at it, but kept coming back to it as the auction droned on. Pulled it off, turned it over - was beguiled by the hand-forged iron hanger, and the inscribed name of one F W Barton.

It was me and an invisible online bidder - I chased hard, and won.

I believe it to be an original 17th century carved and gilded auricular frame from Florence.

Yes, I know there have been copies made. But this is OLD. the hanger is old, the lettering is old, the carving is great, the gilding is heavy and lovely - and it doesn’t look like a 19th century copy to me. The man whose house I was in and whose stuff was being auctioned, had also written his name on verso. He dated it when he acquired it, so it’s been in that house since December 1952.

I started researching the Barton family, and found my guy. The original Barton made a fortune importing Bordeaux wines in the late 1600’s - he bought vast amounts of land, built several big important estates - one of which was a few miles from Irvinstown. (Now demolished)

The place, the names, the dates, and even a particular Barton who lived in Florence in the mid 1700’s - everything points to this being an original work.

But

I sent photos and my research to the “expert” at Adam’s. Without actually examining it, he has responded “19th century copy - probably with a connection to F W BURTON “ - an artist who did a lot of pre-raphealite paintings and used baroque frames. “ worth between €200-400.”

Without consideration of all the similar-looking gilded auricular frames in museums across the world? Without examining the piece in your own hands? I “thanked him” - and remarked that “I am left wondering why anyone would trouble to carve such a thing in the mid 19th century - when the taste in decorative ornament would have followed along the lines of French or English frames of the period?” A polite fuck you….

I’ve sent the photos to Lowy’s in NYC, and to Bassenge Galleries in Berlin. Here’s hoping to find somebody with eyes and a curious mind…

Stories Where Being Gay Isn’t Necessarily The Whole Plot (Though Sometimes It Is) That You Might Not Have Heard Of

These are just a couple of books that I’ve read that touch upon LGBT+ themes in a way that I find interesting or unusual. There’s some interesting perspectives here and I’ve tried to recommend books where being gay and coming out isn’t the ‘main issue’ of the plot. Hope y’all enjoy.

Me Being Me Is Exactly As Insane As You Being You - Todd Hasak-Lowy

Summary: Follows the life of a high schooler named Darren as he struggles with the divorce of his parents and the loss of his best friend.

Genre: Highschool Drama

TW: None :)

Deals with a parent coming out as gay from the perspective of the child which is not often widely spoken about.

It’s also written entirely in lists so if you like funky formatting this is for you.

More Than This - Patrick Ness

Summary: A teenage boy drowns. He dies. Later he wakes up in an English suburb.

Genre: Dystopian

TW: Suicide

An extremely well written book (and one of my favourites) by the LGBT+ icon Patrick Ness.

Feels like every chapter ends with a cliff-hanger.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson - John Green and David Levithan

Summary: The interlocking stories of two boys who share the same name - Will Grayson.

Genre: Highschool Drama

TW: None :)

I really liked the fact that the book didn’t deal with the character discovering they were gay and coming out but the aftermath - it was very nicely portrayed.

It’s cool that the chapters alternate between the two authors.

Pet Peeve: One of the authors definitely doesn’t know how to write teenagers (but don’t worry it gets better).

100% Heartwarming.

Release - Patrick Ness

Summary: Takes place over a single day. High schooler Adam is about to make a couple of small decisions that will change the course of his life. Across town a ghost rises from the lake.

Genre: Highschool Drama cross with Urban Supernatural

TW: Religious based homophobia, murder, sexual harassment.

Really enjoy this one - it just makes you feel all gooey inside!

Touches upon living with a religious, homophobic family but it feels very genuine.

Some smexy times - ironically there’s one on page 169 ;)

The Wasp Factory - Ian Banks 

Summary: Between the ages of 6 and 9, Frank murders three relatives. Living a isolated life on a Scottish island and missing his brother who has been admitted to a mental institution, Frank fills his time with murderous acts as dictated by The Wasp Factory

Genre: Horror

TW: 18+ Murder, animal death, mental illness, trauma, misogyny, gore and overall disturbing themes.

A truly gruesome book - please avoid if you don’t like gore.

However it does bring to light some interesting themes surrounding gender identity - whether it’s presented in a positive or negative light you decide.

My English teacher recommended this to me what I was 13 - what the fuck dude.

“She’s late,” Josephine murmured toCullen who glanced to the stairs that led up to the Inquisitor’s room.

“I’ll go see what’s wrong,” heagreed – eager to abandon the opening act of the ball. Hosting a Summerday ballin Skyhold had been a terrible idea in his opinion. Even with the threat ofCorypheus a year gone and the remnants of the Venatori disappearing into theNorth having so many strangers was still a security risk.

He’d expected to find Lark hunchedover her desk, lost in last minute paperwork. She was nearly as bad as he wasabout snatching minutes here and there to tackle it and then losing track ofthe time.

Instead she was in front of hermirror, lip caught between her teeth and apparently torturing her hair.

Lark had had long hair before theConclave, she’d cut it to the short length – just above her shoulders - that itwas today just after Cassandra had declared the Inquisition. He could stillremember staring the first time he’d seen the new style and wondering what hadhappened to the tons of red curls that had previously framed her face.

Of course all he’d managed to say about it was ‘You cut it.’ and makethe mage feel self-conscious.

Maker, they’d been so awkward witheach other in those early days.

“What are you doing?”

“I don’t know,” she huffed, lookingback at him, letting her hands drop before she turned back to glaring at herreflection for not cooperating. “Nothing looks right. I can’t…I should’ve letJosie hire a dresser or let her or Leliana do it.”

“You look fine, Lark,” he crossedthe room to her.

She was fussing more than she hadbefore the ball where she’d had to simultaneously save Celene’s life, impressOrlais, and end a civil war. Josephine was building alliances and garneringfavor tonight and Leliana had the Game to play but apart from minding theirmanners the rest of the Inquisition leadership was meant to spend the holidayenjoying it.

“What’s wrong?”

“What? Nothing I…uh, might haveneglected to tell you something,” she cringed. Her violet eyes dropping to thefloor but she turned away from the mirror to him so he could put her armsaround her – careful not to muss the fine gown that Vivienne had helped theInquisitor had made for that night. “My family’s coming. And I…” she trailedoff again. “It’s stupid.”

“Your family’s here?” Cullen pulledback, startled. Well, not startled, truthfully, he was far closer to alarmed:He hadn’t expected to meet them. Well he had,but not that night. But…that wasn’t important just then.

There had been a Bann Trevelyan on the guest list. But there were severalBann Trevelyan’s. The Trevelyan’s were a rather large Marcher clan and it wasnot unusual for Lark’s more distant relations to visit Skyhold. One of herbrothers had joined the Inquisition in those early days, but Leo wasn’t who she’dbe fretting about.

“All of them, well almost. Mama’s going to behere. And Papa. Luke and Lori too. Lowie didn’t come, but no surprise there.”

Lowell Trevelyan disliked everyoneand everything on principle from what little Cullen had heard about the family’smiddle child from his younger two siblings. None of them expected him to acceptan invitation from Lark.

Not that any of them had trulyexpected the entirety of the Trevelyan Clan to come either.

“You’re not happy to see them?”

“I am, but I just…” she tucked herhead against Cullen’s shoulder, her voice muffled by the fancy tailored jacketthat he’d been forced into by Josie. “I don’t want to disappoint them again,Cullen. I broke Mama’s heart because I was a mage and then I was a rebel.”

The Trevelyan’s were a religiousfamily. Lark was supposed to join the Templar Order – it’d been considered anhonorable position for the youngest child of the family, and she had said shewas eager to follow her eldest brother on that path. Or – if the warrior’s pathhad not suited her (or if Lark’s mother had managed to talk her out of it) –there had been a talks of a betrothal with the son of some Orelsian house.

The explosive manifestation of her powers haddefinitively ended both her chances to bring the family honor as a Templar and insured that she would be unable tomarry as a noblewoman.

“Lark,” he said gently into herhair. Now that she’d gotten her arms wrapped around him there’d be nodislodging her to get her to meet his gaze, much as he would’ve preferred tomake sure she could see the sincerity on his face. “You’re not adisappointment, not to them, not to anyone.”

“….you’re biased,” she muttered,her arms tightening a little more.

“You survived the Mage-Templar war,you survived the Conclave, you endedthat war, closed the Breach, ended anotherwar, defeated Corypheus,” her arms loosened and she shifted back just enough tolook up at him. “You’re beautiful and kind and a brilliant chess player.”

The blush across her cheeks madehim smile and he moved one of his hands from her back to cup her cheek.

“Don’t you think you’ve doneenough?”

She tilted her head into her touch,a little sigh escaping her lips. Before she straightened a little, meeting hisgaze like he’d just asked her if she was ready to storm Adamant again: “Okay.Okay. Just…help me fix my hair, please? Josie’s going to kill me if I’m anylater.”

“Probably,” he laughed, kissing herlovingly before he let her go and gently fixed her hair with his fingers sothat the curls were mostly ordered and none were sticking up at strange angles.

Then he fetched a flower crown thathad been left on the pile of books on her desk, Andraste’s grace and some blueflower whose name he didn’t know had been woven together by one of the childrenin Skyhold.

He’d spotted Lark wearing itearlier that day while she was running errands around the keep as InquisitorTrevelyan and was glad to see it was still vibrant. He had his suspicions thatLark had laid one of the more frivolous necromancy spells that Dorian hadtaught her on them to keep them from wilting too quickly.

He set it on her crown and couldn’thelp the smile that pulled on his lips.

“Perfect.”

“Biased.”

He chuckled softly, pulling herback in for another kiss. With a smile he murmured against her lips:  “I suppose I am.”

An update

So I haven't posted in a while, I feel like I’ve been working flat out, but have nothing to show for it, so I think I need to work a little smarter at this point.

First things, First: This time last week I received some feedback as to what way could be best to take my digital product Click forward, and it was to really focus on the content this week- who I’m going to look at and really start to build the content, I had originally planned on doing 5 masters of photography- those who set the standards for others, 5 current photographers who are still working, and 3 upcoming artists, those that people should start looking at.

What I currently have done is 3 masters; Niepce and Daguerre, Ansel Adams and Weegee. I have 3 current photographers; Petra Collins,  Ben Lowy and Paul Nicklen. And 2 upcoming photographers; Justin Hogan and Omar Z Robles. 

I feel my target was a little unrealistic, as it took longer to find artists I was interested in, pieces of their work that showed some of their best work and then obviously some information on the artist as well. I found it difficult to find some analysis of pieces, except for Weegee’s ‘The Critic’ which was seen as quite a controversial image as it was planned.

I also began sketching logos, which this week I will digitise and choose which is most suitable.

I highlighted some of the favourites which I will digitise first.
