McKinsey: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)C
COMMENTARY:
This video provides the most important reason to re-elect Biden/Harris in 2024 and either Michael Steele or Kamala Harris in 2026. Tei difference between the Ivy League Socialism of McKinsey and the Democratic Socialism of the Declaration of Independence if the difference between the Fresh Water economics of the Conservatism of William F. Buckley's Sharon Statement and the Salt Water economics of Eisenhower's 1956 Presidential Platform, McKinney has been a major proponent of the Fress Water economics of William F. Buckley's Conservatism, which is a vehicle for the Nazification of America as a wite supremacist insurgency. Which is to say, McKinsey was created and operated on the basis of Steve Bannon's proposal to dismantle the administrative state of Democratic Socialism and replacing it with the authoritarian state Trump has been describing since he began his attempt to steal yet another election by the same order of voter fraud as the butterfly ballot of 2000 and violent political action like the Weather Underground of the Students for a Democratic Society.
The Fresh Water economics that defines Conservatism is the instrumental organization of McKinney, the University of Chicago, the Harvard MBA business model, GOPAC's political Strategy and Steve Bannon's nexus of American Nazification in the global Nazification that financed the Hamas political theater, Dilbert, and Maga Mike Johnson's version of Jesus in contrast in contrast to the Salt Water economics of Eisenhower's 1956 Platform, Adam Smith, Paul Krugman's Peddling Prosperity, the Nixon-Moynihan legislative design for Affirmative Action, Jack Kemp Republicans like Mitt Romney and Michael Steele and Biden's Build Back Better $7 Trillion cunt hair.
Here's the thing: the Taylor Swift generation will be running America before I die if I live to be as old as my mother, who died at 80. 13 years, in other world. They need to understand differently than they do now. The Oliver Stone version of Vietnam is based on the same Fresh Water premise as Maga Mike Johnson's version of Romans 13;1 - 7. Ken Burns' Vietnam is an example of the Oliver Stone version of Vietnam.
I mean, the history is all true as an assembly of recorded points of time within the context of Post Modern Historic Deconstruction. and fits the same laws of scholarship that permits Bart Ehrman and the Jesus Seminar to propose that the Gospel of Mrk is a derivative of the theology of Paul.
I present a Salt Water version of Vietnam that begins with the connection of Clausewitz to the 2nd Amendment, which exposes the Fresh Water fraud of the NRA version of the 2nd Amendment. It's like MAGA Mike Johnson's version of Romans 13:1 - 7. We lost the battle of Vietnam, fair and square, and it is important for the Taylor Swift fan base to understand that Vietnam came down to a contest between Marxism and the Harvard MBA program and Marxism won.
McKinsey's business model is based on the same Fresh Water Finite Game of the Ivy League Socialism of Thomas Jefferson's assertion that his personal property rights were superior to Sally Hemings human rights, including her personal property rights.
Here's the thing for the moment: The McKinsey business model is the same Fresh Water business model of the Detroit 3 before the UAW strike and the Salt Water Quality Assurance business model of the UAW.
Here's the important take-away from the UAW strike is that the Quality Assurance business model assumes the principles of leadership contained in the dimensions of Men, Money and Motivation applies equally throughout the Theory W curve of any enterprise. The essential premise of the US Army Ranger School is that the leadership model of the infantry squad apply to the Army Chief of Staff in a bottom-up organic performance kind of way. That's what the "Be All You Can Be" military training is all about. The French has an axiom that the private soldier carries the Field Marshall's baton in his kit. That's the UAW business model and that's what these new contracts are based on. What the Detroit 3 stockholders will discover is that the Quality Assurance Model is wildly more profitable in terms of market value than the McKinsey Business model.
And when that happens, Wall Street will realize that being woke is better than being Dilbert.

Coconut oil is one of the few foods that should legitimately be considered a “superfood”.
The unique combination of medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil can produce huge health benefits for anybody. The health benefits range from improved brain function to direct fat loss, and many other health benefits you do not want to miss out on.
There have been multiple studies aimed at discovering the wide range of health benefits of coconut water as well, including proving that it is incredible for liquid hydration.
Together, coconut oil and coconut water compose an excellent tag team of nutrition and health benefits!
Benefits of Coconut Water
One of the most interesting features of the coconut water is its refreshing ability; as it has an incredible hydration ability that makes it a very good drink for all athletes.
When used properly, coconut water can be an effective replacement for sugary and artificial sports drinks.
Similarly to aloe vera juice, coconut water is a natural hydration drink that you don’t want to miss out on!
Electrolytes in Coconut Water
The electrolyte level of coconut water has proven to be excellent for replenishing nutrients lost through sweat. It has prompted research on the use of coconut water for short term intravenous purposes, and a specific report was made of the successful use of coconut water as a short term intravenous hydration fluid.
Coconut Water Reduces Stress
Coconut water reduces stress, in and out of training. Based on the results of a study that was conducted on fructose fed hypertensive rats to investigate if tender coconut water mitigates oxidative stress, it was suggested that coconut water has the ability to reverse and also prevent high blood pressure that was induced by a diet that is high in fructose.
This can be achieved probably through the inhibition of lipid peroxidation, improved insulin sensitivity, and the up-regulation of antioxidant status.
Together, your physical and mental stress will become naturally lower, allowing you to feel more relaxed on a daily basis!
Reduce Blood Sugar
Results from a study on the effects of coconut water on diabetic rats revealed that coconut water was able to reduce their blood sugar level and oxidative stress in. Coconut water can literally increase your ability to burn fat, as it stables necessary hormones in your body to fuel the burning of actual fat!
Coconut Oil Benefits
Coconut oil is nearly the epitome of fat burning products for one main reasons. Many products claim to burn fat, but at best they usually just increase your metabolism. This works for a certain amount of time, but isn’t necessarily the be all and end all of fat burning.
The medium chain triglycerides which coconut oil contains have been shown to increase the metabolism of people who consume it in just 24 hours, resulting in increased energy expenditure in the body, and in the long term can lead to a loss of significant weight.
Along with this, coconut oil also effectively helps mobilize fat cells, making them able to be burned.
Regardless of how much you increase your metabolism, there is a certain layer of fat in your body which cannot just be altered through caloric changes. Especially if attempting to maintain a certain amount of muscle mass while losing “weight.”
Coconut oil proves more effective than nearly any other fat burning supplement for this property alone!
Coconut Oil is Naturally Disease Fighting
Lauric acid accounts for almost 50% of total fatty acids present in coconut oil. When coconut oil is digested enzymatically, a monoglyceride called monolaurin is formed. Both monolaurin and lauric acid can kill pathogens such as bacteria, virus or fungus. These two substances have been shown to kill:
Staphylococcus aureus bacteria which is a very dangerous pathogen
Fungus in the form of yeast Candida albicans, a common source of infection in humans.
Regularly in taking coconut oil bolsters your entire immune system, building a form of “bubble” around your body that is impenetrable by most diseases.
Coconut Oil and Coconut Water Improve Blood Cholesterol Levels
I want to say this first. The “cholesterol” in food and the “cholesterol” in our blood are two completely different things. Cholesterol in food has actually no effect on the cholesterol in your blood. They should be named differently; it literally does not make sense.
The majority of foods that negatively affect blood cholesterol levels are sugary and artificial, not high in saturated fat as many dieticians will tell you.
Coconut Oil is loaded with saturated fats that do not affect blood lipid profile as erroneously believed for a long time.
The majority of saturated fats which come from natural sources are incredibly healthy for you.
There are many studies showing the direct effect of saturated fats on testosterone levels even!
Saturated fats raise HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL change for a milder subtype.
In a study of 40 women, it was actually observed that coconut oil lowered total cholesterol and LDL level while raising the HDL when compared with the intake of soybean oil. This improves the risk of cardiovascular disease in the long term.
Coconut Oil Benefits Your Hair and Skin
In addition to dietary benefits, coconut oil is very useful in other applications; as many people use it for cosmetic purposes, which will improve the health and appearance of your skin and hair. Studies carried out in individuals with dry skin show that coconut oil improves skin hydration and lipid content of their skin.
Other cosmetic applications include coconut oil use as a dentifrice and above all as a mouthwash, which has been shown to kill bacteria in the mouth; improving dental health and eliminating bad breath.
I have actually begun using a toothpaste that is simply a blend of turmeric and coconut oil, to great success! It has an incredible whitening effect as well as strengthening your teeth.
Coconut Oil Improves Brain Function in Alzheimer’s Patients
In a study conducted in 2006, consumption of medium chain triglycerides in patients with moderate Alzheimer’s showed an immediate improvement in brain function. Other studies provide the same results, and therefore have created a need to conduct more intensive studies with medium chain triglycerides for their therapeutic potential in patients with Alzheimer’s.
Studies show that the fatty acids present in coconut oil can increase levels of ketone bodies in the blood, and these can provide energy to the brain of Alzheimer’s patients which reduce their symptoms.
Alzheimer’s is one of the biggest causes of dementia and occurs mainly in the elderly population.
Direct Effect on Abdominal Fat
Since coconut oil can reduce appetite and increase the rate at which fat is burned, it seems logical that it can help you lose weight. Coconut Oil has proven to be quite adequate for reducing abdominal fat, which is surrounding your vital organs and is of high risk to your overall health.
This fat (also known as visceral fat) is the most dangerous and is commonly associated with many diseases of the Western world.
In a study conducted with 40 women having abdominal obesity, supplementing your diet with an amount of coconut oil at 30ml a day both reduced body mass index and waist circumference in a period of only 12 weeks. In another study of 20 obese men, there was a reduction in waist circumference of 2.86cm after only 4 weeks of taking 30ml of coconut oil a day.
Concluding Thoughts – The Benefits of Coconut Oil & Coconut Water
There are several benefits that you enjoy from the use of coconut oil and coconut water, and if you feel comfortable you should give it a try!
I have had incredible success since starting to use it more consistently, and my wife absolutely loves it for her hair!
I am also a huge believer in Bulletproof Coffee, which combines coconut oil and butter with your morning cup of coffee. In my opinion, it is one of the most enjoyable ways to get your daily amount of coconut oil in!
If you want to enhance your Bulletproof Coffee even more, I advise that you combine your coconut oil, coffee, and butter with some CBD Oil! MCT oil can be substituted for coconut oil, but they can be interchanged for each other since their benefits are very similar.
Together, this is one excellent way to start your day!
Whether eaten as a fruit or used for cooking, you will definitely enjoy some of the health benefits explained quickly

The Serpent Who Cried French
Today's pet peeve: Introductory material to some sciences that would cite some ancient (or not-so-ancient) scholar's bonkers-sounding theory as an example as if to say "Ha look at how stupid people were before the Enlightenment created Empiricism" and more often than not the examples they cherry-picked were either 1) an isolated case of one scholar's musings that was not widely regarded at the time, 2) a very bad misunderstanding of someone's joke or quip, or 3) straight up mythology or fiction In Linguistics, I just found this trope in the form of one Swedish philologist cited as “Andreas Kemke,” who ‘claimed’ that in Paradise, God spoke Swedish, Adam spoke Danish, and that the Serpent spoke French. You can probably find this factoid in any random Linguistics textbook, mine is not even in English. First off, apparently this person’s name was not even “Andreas Kemke,” it was Andreas Kempe. He lived from 1622-89, and was a religious dissenter to the Lutheran establishment in Sweden, to the point of him being forced into exile in 1664. Now, it should be pointed out that due to a number of quirks in biblical canon and extensive theorizing that existed prior to Kempe, it was a not-so-uncommon idea at the time that Swedish was the original language spoken by God. Long story short, in the Christianized Swedish mythology, Swedes claimed descent from Magog, the grandson of Noah, who was alleged to have migrated to Scandinavia before the events at the Tower of Babel splintered the languages of humanity. This lore is reflected even today in Swedish regnal names, which used a fictitious numbering that stretched back to Biblical times, with a lot of conspicuously-invented Karls or whatever. However! As Claes-Christian Elert (who is basically my only source for all of this besides the original anecdote) pointed out, there are several elements in Kempe’s proposal that pointed to him being at least not as serious as the textbooks made him out to be. The most obvious being the multi-lingual nature of the proposal. How could there be different languages if you’re working with a biblical framework, and the Bible clearly says that there was only one language before Babel? Kempe even spiced in some prototypical conception of linguistic shift with Adam speaking Danish, reasoning that the laryngal sound in Danish sounded ‘effeminate’ to him (Swedes and Danes pls confirm), which fits the frightened Adam fresh from Original Sin. The French-speaking Serpent is simply natural because France was an enemy of the Protestant reformation and are therefore evil. Moreover, the whole thing was framed as a discussion between members of the clergy in a bar, in which the author avatar, after expounding his groundbreaking philological hypothesis, proceeded to *checks notes* wow the clerical audience by “enumerating twenty-six varieties of sausage made in his home province, Vastergötland.” Now, doesn’t it sound kinda suspicious that this guy, an expatriate who was explicitly driven out of his country by the Lutherans, proceeded to write a book about himself mansplaining biblical theory (spiced with Swedish exceptionalist ideas) and regional sausages to a bunch of Lutheran clergy, who just nodded along for the whole ride? I’m not saying that a bunch of writers of linguistics textbooks in the following centuries fell victim to what basically amounts to high-effort shitposting, but it certainly does sound like it. Read more on this thing in ‘Andreas Kempe (1622–89) and the Languages Spoken in Paradise’ : https://benjamins.com/catalog/hl.5.3.02ele has the DOI and you know what to do with it.

2019 MLB Predictions
AL East
Boston Red Sox – (all in a Boston accent) Man do I hate them moah than those gold-chain and backwahds fitted hat wearin’ Yanks. The team just won the World Sehries in pretty easy fashion. How can I bet against ‘em? They have the same loyneup. Heck, if they strengthen theahr second base and catcha positions, there will be no stawpin’ ‘em.
New York Yankees – They added Adam Ottavino and Troy Tulowitzki. Their bullpen is filthy. They have enough home run hitters to knock it over that 200-foot right field wall. This team is poised to win 100 games. I dread watching a bunch of gold chains and bare-chested Yankee fans banging the padded outfield walls during the playoffs, but it’s going to happen, so I’ve just accepted it.
Tampa Bay Rays – This team was sneaky good last year. 90 wins and no one talked about them. Their analytics department is one of the best in baseball. They added Mike Zunino. They have an all-around solid team. They might be able to land that second wild card.
Toronto Blue Jays – They’ll hold Vlad Guerrero down until he works on his defense or loses weight until he magically figures it all out around a Super Two cutoff date. They are obviously rebuilding because they can’t compete with the top three teams above them.
Baltimore Orioles – This team is brutal. Unless Trey Mancini, Chris Davis, and Mark Trumbo find strokes again, they may lose 120 games.
AL Central
Cleveland Indians – They were rumored to be in talks with teams about trading Kluber or Bauer. They didn’t. Their lineup is still solid and they don’t have much competition in the Central.
Minnesota Twins – The Twins might be sneaky this season, unfortunately. Nelson Cruz at the DH helps. Berrios is a future Cy Young winner. They have talent.
Chicago White Sox – They didn’t land any marquee free agents. We know why. Moncada and Anderson will take steps forward. We can maybe even see the same from López and Rodón. Eloy will be up right around April 15 for some reason, and Abreu can stay healthy. They’re poised to win about 73 games…MAX.
Kansas City Royals – They’re somehow going to be worse than the Sox. They have some fast guys…I guess.
Detroit Tigers – They may trade Castellanos and Josh Harrison by the end of the season. Look for them to round off an VERY weak AL Central in 2019.
AL West
Houston Astros – Come on. It’s the Astros. My guy Alex Bregman will be in the MVP race and finish second to Michael Trout. Altuve, Correa, Cole, Verlander, Springer, etc. It’s still a loaded team.
Oakland A’s – I doubt they live up to what they did last year. They were a sneaky good team, but they also had Trevor Cahill and Edwin Jackson put together their best seasons. Not to mention, their closer was Blake Treinen. Treinen is back, but I don’t see this team being better than 2018. Maybe they’ll surprise me.
Los Angeles Angels – They got Trout. They got Ohtani. They’ll get 82 wins or something.
Seattle Mariners – They’re rebuilding. Kikuchi hides the ball better than a magician with a card up his sleeve. They have some youthful talent, but again that’s about it this season.
Texas Rangers – This is just not a very good team. That rotation is absolutely atrocious.
NL East
Washington Nationals – Eaton could be at full health. Maybe Drake LaRoche will lead them to a World Series. I don’t know. Losing Harper didn’t necessarily kill this team. They added Yan Gomes, as well.
Philadelphia Phillies – Harper joins them, and so does Cutch. This team is good now. The rotation needs some work, but the lineup can do the heavy lifting.
Atlanta Braves – They added Donaldson, but compared to the rest of the division, they didn’t improve as much over the offseason.
New York Mets – The rotation is always good, and everyone gets hurt by week 3 because their training staff is worse than coffee breath. Cano can always hit. Lowrie was a nice addition. The same goes for Wilson Ramos and Edwin Diaz. If the staff is healthy, this team is solid.
Miami Marlins – That sounds about right.
NL Central
Milwaukee Brewers – They added Grandal to catch. The rest of the team is the same. This is an easy pick.
Chicago Cubs – Watch them win the World Series because I put them here. If they don’t have injuries, this team can win the division.
St. Louis Cardinals – Goldschmidt was a heckuva addition. Maybe Fowler can stay healthy. This bullpen is still shaky, though.
Cincinnati Reds – The Reds added Kemp and Puig. They also added Sonny Gray. This team could surprise some people. That lineup is sneaky stacked.
Pittsburgh Pirates – This team is so-so. Unfortunately, they’re playing in one of the toughest divisions in baseball.
NL West
Los Angeles Dodgers – They’re still good. Kershaw is experiencing injury issues again, sadly. The rest of the team is good. They added Pollock. Catcher could be shaky, but this is still a good ball club.
Colorado Rockies – They extended Arenado and Blackmon. This is a morale boost. They’re still good.
San Diego Padres – They added the prized possession, Manny Machado. Watch out for Franmil Reyes. They dude hits for power. Tatis, Jr. will be up around the same time as Eloy and Vlad. This team is the ultimate kick to the stomach for White Sox fans. Thank GOD, they play on the west coast.
San Francisco Giants – This team is not very strong. Their best players are older than Cub fans claiming no one goes to Sox games.
Arizona Diamondbacks – They’re as weak as George Costanza without his glasses.
AL Playoffs: Red Sox, Indians, Astros, Yankees (WC), Rays (WC) NL Playoffs: Dodgers, Nationals, Brewers, Cubs (WC), Phillies (WC) World Series: Yankees vs. Nationals, Yankees = Champions

Fact, or Corporate Fiction? Facts and foolishness Announcing phony news on April Fools’ Day is one of corporate America’s favorite occasions for shameless publicity stunts. But when stonks, Dogecoin and $69 million JPG files are real things that warrant serious business coverage, the risk of jokes being taken seriously could hardly be higher. Some say that’s a good reason to skip them, not to mention the gravity that a pandemic has cast over things. With that in mind, can you spot the prank among these recent announcements? (Scroll to the bottom for the answer.) A: To celebrate National Burrito Day today, Chipotle is giving away $100,000 worth of Bitcoin. B: Volkwagen’s U.S. operation is changing its name to “Voltswagen” to emphasize the company’s push into electric vehicles. C: Robinhood is nixing a confetti animation when app users make a stock trade to reduce “distraction.” D: Krispy Kreme is giving anyone who shows proof of Covid-19 vaccination one free doughnut per day for the rest of the year. E: Managers at Goldman Sachs are giving junior bankers gift baskets with fruit and snacks in response to complaints about burnout. HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING Business groups challenge President Biden’s proposed corporate tax increases. The Business Roundtable and U.S. Chamber of Commerce were among those that praised Mr. Biden’s plan to spend trillions on infrastructure. But they rejected his idea to pay for it by raising taxes, saying that doing so would endanger the economic recovery. The latest setbacks in quelling the pandemic. Johnson & Johnson said it would delay future shipments of its vaccine after a mix-up at a manufacturing plant. A top E.U. official said the bloc would allow “zero” shipments of AstraZeneca’s vaccine to Britain until the drugmaker fulfilled its commitments to Brussels. And France announced a third nationwide lockdown as its cases mount and inoculation efforts lag. A tough day for initial public offerings. As Deliveroo had “the worst I.P.O. in London’s history,” other offerings also struggled. In the U.S., the SoftBank-backed real estate brokerage Compass priced at the bottom of a reduced range, while the low-cost airline Frontier sold at the low end of expectations. And in Canada, the space tech company MDA priced below its range. Microsoft wins a huge contract to make augmented-reality headsets for the U.S. Army. The tech giant will receive up to $22 billion for equipping soldiers with sensors based on its HoloLens technology. It’s another big defense contract for Microsoft, which beat out Amazon to provide a $10 billion cloud computing system for the Pentagon. Executives get a ‘sense of urgency’ in Georgia A day after 72 Black executives signed a letter calling on companies to fight restrictive voting bills more forcefully, executives have begun speaking out more directly about laws that limit ballot access. But their statements came too late to affect a sweeping law passed last week in Georgia that added new requirements for absentee voting, limits on drop boxes and other restrictions that have an outsize impact on Black voters. Today in Business Updated April 2, 2021, 3:58 p.m. ET Delta and Coca-Cola reversed course. Ed Bastian, Delta’s C.E.O., told employees, “I need to make it crystal clear that the final bill is unacceptable and does not match Delta’s values.” James Quincey, Coca-Cola’s C.E.O., said he wanted to be “crystal clear” that “the Coca-Cola Company does not support this legislation, as it makes it harder for people to vote, not easier.” The statements by the Atlanta-based companies angered local politicians, including Gov. Brian Kemp. In the past, corporate stands on controversial issues have led to political retribution: In 2018, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle stripped a tax break proposal from a bill that would benefit Delta after the airline ended a promotional discount for N.R.A. members. The State House passed a similar measure yesterday, but the Senate didn’t take it up before the chambers adjourned for the year. Retaliation also goes the other way: In an interview with ESPN, President Biden said he would “strongly support” moving Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game from Atlanta, scheduled for July. “It is regrettable that the sense of urgency came after the legislation was passed and signed into law,” said Darren Walker, the Ford Foundation president, who is a board member at Pepsi, Ralph Lauren and Square. Others companies based in Georgia remained circumspect. A UPS spokesperson said the company stood “ready to continue to help in ensuring every Georgia voter has the ability to vote.” A spokesperson for Home Depot reiterated the company’s stance that it believes “all elections should be accessible, fair and secure.” A spokesperson for Inspire Brands, the owner of Dunkin’ Donuts and Arby’s, said that it “values inclusivity” and believes that “every American should have equal access to their right to vote.” “The argument is they are recruited, they’re used up and then they’re cast aside without even a college degree. So they say, how can this be defended in the name of amateurism?” — Justice Samuel Alito, assessing the “stark picture” painted by college athletes in an antitrust case against the N.C.A.A. that the Supreme Court heard yesterday. The Red Sox sold a stake to private equity. Now what? RedBird Capital Partners confirmed its deal to buy a stake in Red Sox parent Fenway Sports Group, a transaction that values the company at $7.35 billion. DealBook spoke with RedBird’s founder, Gerry Cardinale, and Fenway’s chair, Tom Werner, about what happens next. Buy and build. RedBird plans to acquire more teams: Mr. Cardinale noted that his company doesn’t own teams in the N.B.A., N.H.L. or M.L.S. For its part, Fenway plans to tap new opportunities in ticketing, sponsorship and media. (As part of the RedBird deal, the N.B.A. star LeBron James bought a stake in Fenway.) In media, Fenway controls NESN, and RedBird owns a stake in the YES network. “You should expect that we’re going to continue to look for ways to innovate in that area,” said Mr. Cardinale, who helped create the YES network. Deepening ties with online gambling is also on the table. “We do have an excellent relationship with DraftKings,” Mr. Werner said, “and we’ve already had some conversations with them about partnerships.” The deal was a better fit for the private market instead of a SPAC, the executives said, after talks to take Fenway public via a blank-check firm fell through. “In the middle of Covid, with the mandate to re-underwrite the next wave of growth for Fenway Sports Group, we probably would be better off doing that privately and then give ourselves the option down the road,” Mr. Cardinale said of going public. He also called the current SPAC market “very frothy.” What worked at WeWork WeWork was founded in 2008, rose spectacularly, reached a $47 billion valuation and famously crashed before a planned I.P.O. in 2019. (It announced a deal last week to go public by merging with a blank-check firm that valued it at roughly $8 billion.) A new documentary, “WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn,” tries to find lessons among the ups and downs. It streams on Hulu, starting tomorrow. Jed Rothstein, the director, told DealBook that he believes what’s most compelling about WeWork isn’t what went wrong, but how it initially succeeded by turning strangers into a kind of tribe. “We still need that,” he said. “The core idea of WeWork met a real need for community,” Mr. Rothstein said. “The voids people were trying to fill have only become more real.” After a year of social distancing, he likes the notion of curated communal spaces, which is what WeWork offered. Talking to early WeWorkers who bought the vision and later felt betrayed, he was surprised to find how much the company gave its devotees, notably a feeling that they were part of something bigger. That is worth acknowledging in a world where people will increasingly work remotely and for many different companies in their careers, Mr. Rothstein said. WeWork’s co-founders, Adam Neumann and Miguel McKelvey, both had communal childhood experiences. Mr. Rothstein said he thought they sincerely wanted to replicate the good in group life and inspired people who hadn’t seen that before. But Mr. Neumann also focused on what he didn’t like — sharing equally — and emphasized an “eat what you kill” mentality. Ultimately, his hunger turned the community dream into a nightmare for many. After the director talked to people who followed the initial vision, his perspective changed. “People in the film experienced real growth and fulfillment mixed with their anger,” he said. “I realized the story is much more nuanced.” THE SPEED READ Deals The media conglomerate Endeavor filed to go public for a second time, while raising $1.8 billion to buy full control of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It also added Elon Musk to its board. (WSJ, CNBC) Vice Media is reportedly in talks to go public by merging with a SPAC. And the S.E.C. issued two notices for companies looking to go public via SPAC. (The Information, S.E.C.) Junior bankers aren’t the only ones feeling burned out. Young lawyers are, too. (Business Insider) Politics and policy New York became the 15th state to legalize recreational marijuana. (NYT) Efforts by aides to Gov. Andrew Cuomo to hide New York State’s Covid-19 death toll coincided with his efforts to win a multimillion-dollar book deal. (NYT) An accidental disclosure by the I.R.S. revealed a $1 billion tax dispute with Bristol Myers Squibb. (NYT) Tech Best of the rest The ad agency Deutsch is doubling referral bonuses for Black job candidates. (Insider) Amazon wants its employees mostly back in its offices, while the Carlyle Group and IBM favor hybrid working models. (Insider, Bloomberg) Paul Simon is the latest musician to sell his entire back catalog: Sony Music Publishing will buy the collection, including classics like “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” for an undisclosed amount. (NYT) Feeling burned-out? As more workers consider a return to the office, our colleague Sarah Lyall is writing about late-pandemic anxiety and exhaustion. Tell her about how you’re coping. April Fools’ Day quiz answer: B. If you were fooled by Volkswagen’s prank, you’re in good company. Volkswagen reportedly told journalists that a draft of the announcement was not a stunt. It later called the stunt just “a bit of fun.” Source link Orbem News #corporate #fact #Fiction

Books, Books, Books
Lists are all the rage at the end of any year and this plague year is no exception. Since I’ve read a fair number of books by friends this past year or so, I thought I’d send out my “Goodreads” reviews of all three books that I’ve enjoyed with the hope of giving each a bit more recognition (and perhaps a bump in sales) in the New Year. The reviews are presented in the order that I reviewed them. All three books are available on Amazon or through your local independent bookstore. Also try IndieBound, the online independent bookseller.
[End of Year Note: My apologies for not being more active on social media lately. I’m working on my own follow up to “We Shall Not Be Moved” and have tried to stay away from all forms of distraction, including social media. With any luck, my next project, the story of the Tougaloo Nine Library Sit-In, will be on its way to the publisher at the end of 2021.]
And now, for our 2020 BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!
Wave On: A Surfing Story by Michael E.C. Gery
(Amazon Digital Services, 2018, 432 pages, Autobiographical Fiction)
[Reviewed August 2019]
"A wonderfully adept stoner’s diary for the boomer generation."
I was thoroughly enchanted with “Wave On” from beginning to end. Even when I wasn’t sure exactly where we were going, the ride was exhilarating. Perhaps it was because I knew many of the places where the action takes place: Williamsburg, the Outer Banks, Annapolis, Ocean City, College Park, and even The Who concert back in 1971 [or was it ’70?] at Merriweather Post Pavilion, which I also happened to attend!! I read very little fiction but a fair amount of biography and memoir, and I must say that I rarely find a work of fiction that is as engaging and heart-driven as “Wave On.”
Part One is a pure, lovely, romantic love story that is contemporaneous with our early adulthood and, thus, easy for me to put myself in the shoes of Cro as he tries to navigate the strictures of young adulthood in a laissez-faire new world of the mid-1960s. The fact that he has been schooled at an Episcopalian Boys school and loves all of those old hymns and prayers makes it all the more real for me, having attended a 4-year Catholic high school seminary. Cro’s goofiness, uncertainty, and (initial) shyness around women also resonated.
What I loved about Part One is that Gery establishes a voice for Cro, the Narrator, that is immediate, engaging, alive, and consistent throughout the entire novelization of what I believe is Gery’s young adult life. (A new term I just picked up--“autofiction” i.e., autobiographical fiction--seems to apply here.) Cro is so normal in his struggles to understand how the world works, so honest in his mistakes, so in love with his environment—the ocean, the waves, the shore—that he makes us love them, too, perhaps a bit more than we already do. But it is that voice that intrigued me throughout. No matter what kind of scrape Cro and his interesting band of friends and lovers gets into, there is a confidence that they are up to the challenge. [I must admit that Cro’s drift during Part Two with regard to his professional aspirations and even his family life was a bit baffling, but I came to think that the weed had a lot to do with his lack of ambition and direction.]
Part Two, of course, gets a bit more complicated as real life intervenes and our little Love Couple begins to encounter troubles from within and without. I hated to see that and was certain that Cro was going to lose his wonderful Ella and Adam and couldn’t see my way through to how it all might resolve, particularly when Maryanne enters the picture and the Neil Young Concert kiss betrays a problematic (if not fatal) flaw in our hero. But I suffered through all of that, wanting to see how it all came out in the end. Although there was no deus ex machina, the surprising turn of events that helps resolve these dramatic arcs is shocking yet consistent. It all made narrative sense and helped explain why we were taken on so many to such a happy ending.
“Wave On” is a wonderfully adept stoner’s diary for our boomer generation. I can’t wait for Gery’s next work of autofiction to continue the journey with him.
Hard Road South by Scott Gates
(Blue Ink Press, 2020, 254 pages, Fiction)
[Reviewed, May 2020]
“A little jewel box of a novel.”
“Hard Road South” is a little jewel box of a novel set during the early days of Reconstruction Virginia. This beautifully rendered tale imagines a naïve Connecticut Yankee—a former Union soldier—who travels South to visit and potentially settle in some of the lush foothills of the Shenandoah Valley where he once engaged the Confederate “enemy”. Hoping to find peace while helping to reform a culture that wishes to be left alone, our hero, one Solomon Dykes, finds fast friends but also fast enemies amidst the verdant pastures of his would-be Old Virginny Home.
An early scene sets the tone: A down on her luck woman is stopped in the town of Middleburg—the place that would become the enclave of the likes of millionaires John and Jackie Kennedy and Jack Kemp Cooke a century later—by some Union soldiers still on the scene occupying this “foreign” land to ensure compliance with Union directives. Her transgression? Wearing the Confederate uniform jacket of her dead husband. The three Confederate buttons on the jacket must be removed or she will be arrested and charged with treason. Such is the over-reach of conquering heroes.
Our damsel in distress is aided by the swift thinking of one Jeb Mosby, a local farmer, who pulls out his knife and gently removes the buttons so as to spare his life-long neighbor the embarrassment of arrest. “Such was life now,” Mosby observes. “Filled with reminders—small as they may seem—that life would not soon be returning to how he’d left it before the war.” It is small observations such as this that gives this book its charm and its weight. Representations of what life must have been like for the conquered South are constant reminders that the likes of Solomon Dykes were not at all welcome and most likely would be rebuffed should the opportunity arise. Scott Gates is new to novel writing, but you wouldn’t know it from his sharp eye for detail and his pacing. Gates gives his story and his characters plenty of room to breathe and develop while providing the reader with glimpses of the specifics of their war-torn lives. A Southerner by birth, Gates offers a sensibility of one trying to bridge the great divide while not shying away from the difficulties building that bridge might require. This is a tale for our time, as well, as our nation is once again fraught with deep divisions perhaps not seen since the ending of that great Civil War more than 150 years ago. We are stuck and unable to move forward until some fundamental rift gets settled. “Hard Road South” is a highly readable, thoroughly enjoyable yet cautionary tale for our time. Perhaps we can learn from the past and this time get things right. Perhaps …
Small Business Big Heart: How One Family Redefined the Bottom Line by Paul Wesslund
(Highway 61 Communications, 2020, 242 pages, Nonfiction)
[Reviewed, August 2020]
“Big-hearted Book Teaches That Care for Others = Good Business”
In the midst of a global health crisis—the worst we’ve seen in generations—and while we struggle as a country, as a people, to find our footing morally and culturally during a reductio ad absurdum political creep show, Small Business BIG HEART lands as a corrective, a balm to soothe frayed nerves and intemperate minds. That is not to say that this big-hearted book is pablum. No, the stories it brings are all too real—people who often have lost their way through drugs, alcohol, and bad choices; refugees who have fled horrific circumstances and are looking only to start a new life but can’t due to the stigma of being different; and one family in particular that is faced with its own dissolution as well as the loss of its dream of a thriving family business. The high-stakes rollercoaster ride that journalist Paul Wesslund takes us on is dizzying not only for its incredible highs and sometimes tragic lows, but also because it introduces a concept too often forgotten … no, disregarded … in modern business life—what corporate governance experts would call “the duty of CARE.”
Sal and Cindy Rubino are two hard-working business owners who, through the course of their trials and tribulations, manage to hold on to the dream of a creating their own business from scratch while also enduring the inevitable personal strains that such a dream exacts. The two met and fell in love while working toward Hospitality Management business degrees in Miami, but the real story starts when they try and apply the lessons of their training in the difficult day-to-day drudgery of actually running their own restaurant—simply named “The Café”—in an offbeat, run-down section of Louisville, Cindy’s hometown. It is here that their skills and wills are tested to the limits and each will have to adjust their visions to fit the realities not explored in textbooks. And it is here that their hearts will be broken, and then opened to the truths that adaptability and innovation can be applied not only to recipes and business models, but to the very people you employ and the methods you use to build a team for success.
Along the way, we meet all manner of broken individuals. The restaurant business is notorious for laying waste to lives due to its thankless dawn-to-dusk hours and the constant requirement to please the customer at all costs. Wesslund has an expert’s eye for the telling detail and the wrenching story line. [I found myself tearing up at any number of stories throughout this engaging, nonfiction tale.] His twenty years as editor-in-chief of Kentucky Living, the largest circulation monthly magazine within the state, shows in the well-drawn portraits of individuals from as far away as Bhutan and as near as Pricilla’s Place, a half-way house just a few blocks from the Café, where Cindy and Sal would find some of their best employees. Perhaps Wesslund’s (not to mention the Rubinos’) refusal to judge people by the standards of upwardly mobile middle-class values but instead, with extraordinary discernment, to look deeper into their souls to spot their special sparks and unique talents is the hallmark of this extraordinary book.
It is rare outside of evangelical circles to find a book that so openly espouses Christian principles, but Sal and Cindy make no bones about the fact that their faith community helped to save their marriage as well as their business, and Wesslund recounts the strength of those relationships and the power of religious inspiration with rare delicacy. Yet the book is not all seriousness and drama. We get, of all things, recipes (!) at the start of nearly every chapter—a creative way of introducing a new topic or the next development of this constantly churning story. And we are introduced to Cindy’s creative cooking style, to Sal’s winning smile and to their gracious, open approach to hospitality.
Small Business BIG HEART runs the gamut of the small business life cycle. It is a soup-to-nuts (literally) primer on the ups and downs of small business management. As such, it is tough medicine for anyone daring to think of creating their own start-up. Given that, however, it provides a deeply affecting microcosm of how we as a society—as a culture—might live if we, indeed, saw everyone we encountered as a member of our own family. It does not skimp on the tough decisions that must be made to keep a business afloat—the “tension between compassion and the bottom line”—but it provides a template on how to “run a business with heart”—where everyone can be a winner.
Wishing you a New Year full of new books, new ideas, new opportunities, new promise.
