Decent capture of this show. Whenever Terry Mann is on stage it's a fancam. The first 20 minutes are completely blindly filmed so i defaulted to wideshotting most of it. Due to usher activity a lot of the show is shot this way, whenever he left i could zoom and such, second big issue with this video is the obstruction. The people in front of me never stopped moving and they kept getting into my shot constantly so there is a lot of obstruction that i try my absolute best to avoid.Some washout, shakiness and readjusting throughout.

Earlier last week, the Lucille Lotrel Awards kicked off award season with the 2024-2025 slate of nominees. The Lortels are the only awards that recognize exclusively off-Broadway productions. Not every show that plays off-Broadway is eligible, and frankly, I'm not even sure how it would be possible to vote on all of them. This year, seventy shows were under consideration (the full list is not public knowledge), and thirty-two were nominated in some capacity. And I must dissent.

Whilst it hasn't been ever officially stated as to "what went wrong" with Tekken 6 and specifically Jin's characterization. Especially because the Tekken devs (especially Harada) are liars. Usually to make it out as if they're actually carefully planning stuff and not just making up the story as they go along, they'll make statements that are clearly untrue (usually because they contradict former statements)

However, there have been tidbits of information they've given, especially during the time of T6's release, that does give you insight as to what happened here. And mostly it all boils down to Harada.

Despite Harada claiming Jin in his 2nd favorite character (the first obvs being Heihachi) - I don't think Harada liked Jin to begin with. I think he was always bored with Jin as I don't think Harada likes characters that are mostly good. (As even recently, he stated he relates to Kazuya more than Jin. Although, still claiming Jin is his second favorite.)

This is an old tweet from Harada that I feels completely gives away what happened;

Harada has been trying to make Jin a villain since his conception basically. The writers didn't want to do this. Now this is only me theorizing - but due to Harada loving Heihachi, this makes me believe that as I said, Harada was bored with Jin and thought he'd be more interesting as a villain. However, the writers, disagreed. Because making Jin a villain goes against the original concept for him. Which the original concept for Jin was to be the Good Mishima (this was even mentioned in the SFxTK artbook) and to be a tragic (or "unfortunate") hero. iirc, I believe another artbook or something mentions that Jin was supposed to be Kazuya's opposite as well. He's what Kazuya might've been if Kazuya was raised by a loving family and not by Heihachi. Therefore, having Jin behave exactly like Kazuya also destroys the purpose of his character. So, after the creative clashes against director and writers, they finally came to an agreement - they'll make Jin a bad guy... if it's for a good reason.

And that's where the incredibly sloppy and inconsistent writing comes in. It's why Jin is so fucking weird in Tekken 6. It's why he's a total coldhearted bad guy (what Harada wanted) yet is still supposedly doing something good (defeating Azazel to save the world... by throwing the world into a war????) But I felt like they still could've executed this a lot better? But who knows, given that Harada's the director - he could've been telling the writers that they weren't writing Jin as "villainous" as he envisioned.

But then the backlash was major. Fans didn't like how Jin was written. Harada reported even getting hateful letters in the mail because of this (which is kinda funny now... given how hated Jin's character is amongst many fans. Probs 'cos a lotta newer fans don't remember what Jin used to be) and seeing as the writers didn't even wanna do this... it's why Harada conceded and then let Jin return to what he was rather than pushing it.

Again, a lot of this is simple speculation off a tweet. But I just have the strongest feeling that if the writers hadn't argued with Harada about making Jin at least "somewhat good" and if the backlash wasn't there. Jin would've been a straight up villain in Tekken 6 - I mean, he already sorta was, but what I mean is that he wouldn't have had any good motives (saving the world supposedly) and that I wouldn't even be surprised if he remained a villain.

But I guess there is one thing that always confuses me about my own speculations, Harada's tweet, and Harada's adamancy in making Jin a villain... why did Harada wanted to make Jin a villain so bad if he was just gonna introduce the next main character as... a Mishima who is a Good Mishima? Like as great as Lars is... it just makes his character feel weird when... why do that when you could've just kept Jin as the Good Mishima? I sometimes wonder if maybe they also planned on doing the same with Lars (making him bad later) but I don't know.

Regardless of what the writing process behind Tekken 6 truly was, it remains bizarre and just... bad. And again, I return to my statement; it just made me wish they had retconned it. It was that much of a mess that they should've just retconned it.

'Most of us want to connect and be understood. Most of us want to feel less alone in the world. It’s why we read books and watch films. Taichi Yamada’s novel “Strangers,” a ghost story set in Japan, may not be my story, and yet it spoke to me on a profoundly personal level. As Harada, the melancholic screenwriter, wanders back to his childhood home on the outskirts of Tokyo to reconnect with his parents, I was transported to my own childhood home, pulled into my own past. His story was becoming my own, and that is what I needed to put on the page.

Filmmaking is always exposing, but for this movie to work, I knew I had to dig further into my own life than I had before in my work. I needed to be specific, hoping that honesty would unlock the universal themes of the piece. It is worth stating that this is not an autobiography; unlike the protagonist, my parents are still alive, but the story offered the scope for me to examine loneliness and loss, and how these experiences shape our childhood and ultimately define the adults we become. It allowed me to explore my understanding of love, both familial and romantic, and how those dual aspects can inform each other, for better and worse.

Unlike the original source material, there was never a question that I would keep the central character straight. If this was ultimately a story about love, then it was important to me that it would portray queer love. I had been looking to say something about growing up gay in the 1980s for some time and how that experience haunts many of us like a ghost, but I hadn’t found the right story until now. Telling any queer story can be a challenging experience. The pressure of representation can be a heavy burden, but I knew I wanted my focus to be narrow, to the experience of a distinct generation of gay men who grew up in a certain time and place. Again, specificity became the mantra.

The script came together during the pandemic: trapped in my apartment, separated from family, fearful of what might happen to the world and everyone in it. I dug deep into my own memories: photos, diaries, music. Many of my own stories became Adam’s. And as I wrote about my protagonist returning to his family home, it was my own childhood home I pictured. And then, as we prepared the production, I made the decision to shoot in that actual location, a place I hadn’t been back to in more than 40 years. I wasn’t totally prepared for how it would make me feel, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

It was a strange experience working in that space, shooting scenes in my parents’ old bed or around the Christmas tree in a version of my old front room. I felt dragged backwards and forwards in time. I developed eczema again, something I hadn’t had since I was young. The body seems to remember. I wasn’t the happiest of kids. Interestingly, it seemed to have an effect on many of the cast and crew too, all navigating their own complicated relationships with their pasts as the film’s themes emerged throughout the production. Again the specific seemed to be becoming universal.

Editing was a long process. For months my editor and I were locked alone in a room trying to craft the unusual tone, the liminal space in which the film exists. With it came the growing anxiety that in sharing this film, I would be revealing too much of myself. As we shared cuts, I could sense how over-sensitive I was to any criticisms of the film, feeling it was, in effect, a criticism of me. But if I wanted the film to radiate a certain vulnerability, then it had to contain my vulnerability too.

Now the film is out and seemingly connecting with audiences. It is reassuring to know that perhaps we did something right. We managed to excavate a feeling that others can recognize. We found the universal in the personal. It has allowed people to reflect on their own lives and the important people within it.

I’ve been asked if I feel liberated somehow now that the film is out there. That is a hard question to answer just yet. I do feel that making the film has given me a greater understanding of the nature of love and its power to soften the harder edges of life, but it has not been an easy ride. Nor, perhaps, should it be. Making any kind of art is often both as joyous and as painful as life itself, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep trying.

  "Days of Wine and Roses" in its movie form starring Jack Lemon and Lee Remick was more subdued and macabre than this musical version that opened at Studio 54 last night. The story is pretty much the same as the movie version, only we get a more upbeat tempo with the music and it goes anathema, unfortunately with the plot. The plot deals with alcoholism between the two main characters: Kirsten Arnesen (Kelli O'Hara) and Joe Clay (Brian D'Arcy James).

 In this musical, all the actors are very good; the two leads are excellent, but the problem lies with both the direction (Micheal Greif) and the music and lyrics by Adam Guettel; both trip up the book by Craig Lucas. The problem with the direction is that we get two people who are deeply in love with one another and even with that, the show never knows when to stop being silly and to start dealing with these two lovebirds serious problem, which is alcohol. It is not till the very end that we see what damage the booze has done to this couple, even then it never hits home with the audience as hard as it should. In the music we get songs that never really resonate nor keeps our attention for very long. While "Underneath" and "Forgiveness" are the evenings best, many of the other songs are forgettable; and this is with two of the best singers today on Broadway!

  With a pleasing scenic design (Lizzie Clachan), lighting by Ben Stanton and well appointed costumes by Dede Ayite and sound by Kai Harada all work well as does the Co choreography. What makes this musical less memorable is how the music runs in the opposite direction of the book.And even where the book stands out against the backdrop of the shows poor direction, it too fails us at parts.

In all honesty, I have a feeling Harada begrudgingly doesn't think about Jin like that anymore. Like I feel he really wants to but realizes he can't. Especially given during the Tekken 7 era, there were apparently fans who still viewed Jin as a good guy and Harada would try to shut them down for it. (Mainly bringing up that Jin is still "responsible for many deaths".) The fact that Harada, or so he claimed, was adamant about Jin becoming a villain for "15 years" (this was during the release of Tekken 6) and apparently wasn't able to do this BECAUSE of that conflict with the writers, I don't see why he'd view Jin any differently if he's been wanting him to be a villain for over a decade. I know people's opinions change, but like... he's also talked about the massive backlash he received for Jin in Tekken 6, and also the fact that every other person (including Jin's voice actor) also hated it along with the fans. So, because of all that, I feel Harada only changed his mind on Jin because of the pressure. I feel if everyone was okay with Jin being a villain or didn't make as big of noise, Harada would've continued with it to this day.

Howeverrr... it also seems Harada or some writer[s] may have finally stopped caring about more villainous characters / stories. Since as I've pointed out on my RP blog, all the characters seem far less villainous or power hungry than they used to be. Eddy no longer likes power & has let go of his need for revenge, Jin is now back to his good self I guess, Xiaoyu is no longer a yandere like she weirdly was in Tekken 6, Heihachi's motivations have been changed to put him in a better light, Devil [Jin] has been retconned to be a protective force rather than a corruptive one. Lars was heavily implied to become bad as well (as both Heihachi and Kazuya warned Lars about how Mishimas are cursed to betray each other) And well, I betcha anything Kazuya will get his redemption arc in the next continuation of the story. So, Tekken has definitely lost its "edge" with the Bad Boys. Dunno if that's a result of Harada's tastes changing or something else. Harada had mentioned in the earlier days that his own family reminds him of the Mishimas. Then later said (I think this was during the Tekken 7 era? Maybe right before) that after having children, he began to understand / respect his parents and family more. Therefore, it could be that the change for these characters (especially Heihachi) is because Harada is less bitter about his personal relations. But that is just me completely theorizing, but it DOES add up to why the Mishimas are no longer a cursed lineage and why they're even presented as Heroic now if you think about it.
