Supply and Demand of the Manual Transmission in America
by: Faraz Ahmed (ID: 68257683)
I am a firm believer and enthusiast of the manual transmission. I think that there is no other form of enjoyment in driving a car. The power you have to row your own gears and be connected with the car and you can dictate when to shift is addicting. My image of a perfect car is a 2-Door Coupe with a manual transmission and at least a V6 or V8 engine or even a high revving 4 cylinder. I own a 1999 Acura Integra GS-R in the perfect spec. (2-door hatchback in Milano Red paint) as well as a 2001 Chevy Corvette Targa-Top in red. As you may have suspected both have manual transmissions. Many other people like myself are enthusiasts of the manual transmission but in todays market it is very different. Crossovers are now the craze and coupes let alone manual transmissions are not of the averages drivers concern. Almost all around the world besides North America manual transmission vehicles sell much more than in North America, especially in the U.S.
https://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/sc-auto-cover-manual-transmissions-20180710-story.html
According to the Chicago Tribune, “Manual transmissions account for just 2 percent of all vehicles sold in 2018, according to data from Edmunds.com. In 2006, 47 percent of new models in the U.S. were offered with automatics and manuals. Now it’s down to 20 percent and dropping sharply.” back in the 80′s and 90′s many cars had manual transmissions some were only offered with them and some were trim exclusive like my Integra GS-R, it did not matter which body style you got, sedan or coupe/hatchback the GS-R trim was only available with a manual transmission. Nowadays you'll be lucky to find a car that you want that even offers it.
This graph shows that because the demand of manual transmission cars is low then the supply will be low as well because manufacturers are obviously not going to make cars that the majority of consumers do not want. The crossover craze started back in the early 2000′s and it doesn't seem that its gonna stop.
https://www.caranddriver.com/features/g20734564/manual-transmission-cars/
For example on the above car and driver article they claim that they are only 40 new cars you can buy with a manual transmission right now in 2019. Most of them have something in common, they are all performance vehicles. The cars on the list range from Honda Civics and Accords to Porsches and BMW M cars. Most of the cars on the list are very expensive and/or they are not practical because they may only have 2 doors or not enough seats or trunk room. Most people buy a car to get them from point A to point B as easy as possible and having to row your own gears is too difficult for them which I see as being lazy. But at the end of the day it is their decision. But some cars since their inception have kept the manual transmission because they saw constant high demand for them.
The Chevrolet Corvette since its inception has always commanded a manual transmission as a drivers choice and even today Chevrolet has still offered a manual transmission on the entire range of Corvette including the 650 horsepower and torque Z06 (that soon will be mine haha) and the 750 horse power ZR-1 while most other manufacturers only reserve the manual transmission for its base model cars or not even offer it at all.
https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/car-technology/news/a30217/2016-corvette-manual-take-rate/
In the above Road and Track article, they say that 23 percent of 2016 Corvettes have manual transmissions and obviously back in the 80′s and 90s that percentage was bigger but 23 percent for today is a lot. The article even says it itself by saying, “...but in reality, 23 percent isn't too shabby. Considering the take rate for manual transmissions among all U.S.-market cars typically hovers around 5-7%, nearly a quarter of all Corvettes sold is impressive.”
https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1091860_40-percent-of-corvette-buyers-stick-with-manual
According to this motor authority article they say, “General Motors has confirmed to Edmunds that 40 percent of Corvette Stingray buyers choose the seven-speed manual transmission option.” Thats very impressive and gives hope for enthusiasts like me that the manual transmission isn't dead.
Some people may say that manufactures do not care about the consumers and they only offer certain options out of convenience because they can offer it cheaply and it may be a money-maker that is why the corvette till this day has a manual transmission because it sells well. But that's not always that case. Porsche had to listen to the consumer when they unveiled their new Porsche 911 GT3 a few years back.
https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/videos/a5043/2014-porsche-911-gt3-road-test-review/
I am in the minority of enthusiasts when I say I do not like Porsche I just thin k they are overpriced and I would never consider buying one but I am sure they are great track cars. But when the new 991 generation 911 GT3 came out many purists were shocked to find out that it did not offer a manual when pervious years they always did and Porsche was supposed to be the ultimate drivers cars and driving an automatic isn't being connected to the car. Road and Track in their article say, “You still want a manual? You're in the minority. Porsche says worldwide demand for this car is beyond production capacity already. Even though it doesn't exist yet.Technically, too, they say the free-revving engine pretty much demanded this gearbox because so much of the character was designed around incredibly fast shifts; in a dead straight the engine flies to redline so quickly you'd have a great deal of trouble executing clean shifts with a traditional gearbox.”
Because of this the demand for older 911 GT3′s with a manual transmission went up and Porsche noticed this and realized their mistake because many wealthy owns who have connections straight to Porsche expressed their concerns that there was not a manual and because Porsche is obviously not making money on the used 911 GT3′s with manuals they decided to refresh the 911 GT3 and offer a manual transmission again.
https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-shows/geneva-auto-show/news/a32836/2018-porsche-911-gt3-manual/
In the Road and Track article above, they say, “Porsche stirred up quite a controversy when it decided to offer the previous 911 GT3 only with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. That PDK gearbox is brilliant, but if ever a car deserved a manual transmission, it was the GT3, and enthusiasts lets Porsche know. Good news: Porsche was listening. For the 2018 911 GT3, the manual is back.” This just shows that there is still a demand for manual transmissions for certain cars.
Overall, the biggest problem is this crossover craze and the fact that people are just not buying manual transmission vehicles brand new. The only way we can save the manual transmission is to learn how to drive them and buy cars equipped with it brand new so that manufactures know that there is a demand for this transmission again and we will soon get many more vehicles that offer it again. But it all starts with us and if we really want this transmission to stick around then we need to put in the effort and take the leap of faith.

When moviegoers first saw King T'Challa in action as Black Panther it was a real showstopper: The Marvel comic book character clings to the top of a sleek new Lexus LC sports coupe as he surfs through the busy streets of Busan, South Korea, in a high-speed chase that ultimately destroys his remote-controlled ride.
The scene’s a crowdpleaser, to be sure--and it successfully sells Lexus' image as a maker of high-performance luxury sports cars to a younger audience. Starting this weekend, with a prominent role in Sony's sci-fi franchise Men in Black: International, the Japanese automotive company hopes to add another hit to its credits, giving it supporting roles in summer blockbusters for two years running.
But betting on a movie's success is a game that most veteran studio executives have a hard time playing, let alone luxury automotive brands. And no matter how much money is sunk into a project, there are no guarantees at the box office.
For instance, Black Panther could have been a big miss for the Japanese luxury automaker. The titular main character, who rules a fictional technologically advanced African nation, was relatively unknown to most audiences prior to the movie’s release. Lexus executives weren’t allowed to read the script before signing on to support the film, giving the company no guarantee of how its brand would appear on screen. The production also wanted six coupes to use for filming, which forced Lexus to provide custom-built prototypes that can cost upwards of $1 million each, since the actual car was not being produced.
For Lexus, whose corporate parent Toyota isn't known for risk taking, the gamble paid off. Black Panther blew away expectations to become 2018’s highest-grossing movie in the U.S., earning more than $700 million domestically, and nearly $1.4 billion worldwide. And the film didn't just appeal to comic book fans, it also over-indexed with African-Americans, given that Black Panther was the first big-budget Marvel Studio’s movie to feature a black actor as the lead.
"Lexus has always been committed to celebrating the rich diversity of our customers, but Black Panther catapulted it to a new level," says Lisa Materazzo, Lexus’ vice president of marketing.
Betting on blockbusters
With Men in Black: International, Lexus is taking less of a risk. Sony has put considerable resources into breathing new life into its $2 billion franchise, which now stars Chris Hemsworth (Marvel's hammer-wielding Thor) and Tessa Thompson, who proved a winning duo together in Thor: Ragnarok.
In the new MIB film, Lexus' aggressive RC F sports coupe races through London, helping agents escape threatening aliens, before transforming into a jet. Lexus' RX Hybrid and LX SUVs are also featured in scenes with alien encounters.
In both MIB and Panther, Lexus is portrayed as a future-forward designer of high-tech vehicles, a positioning that promotes the company's newest slogan "Experience Amazing." "The beauty of film integrations is that none of the traditional rules apply," Materazzo says. "It's an opportunity to partner with filmmakers to imagine all of the possibilities."
This isn't necessarily new ground for Lexus, which has introduced other high-tech products like a hoverboard and sports yacht concept over the past several years to expand the brand's appeal to affluent buyers in the sought-after 45- to 55-year-old market.
Lexus is looking to use films as a way to launch new emotionally engaging campaigns around the release of its new sports cars and luxury sedans and SUVs. It especially sees movies as a way to tap into conversations around cultural events.
But forcing your brand into the story doesn’t come cheap. In addition to providing expensive prototypes to filmmakers for Panther, Lexus produced a comic book and custom videos, as well as bought a 30-second Super Bowl spot for the tie-in and LC 500 launch that cost the company more than $5 million.
But when Marvel's movies have made a combined $21 billion worldwide to date (including the most recent "Avengers"), you take the risk.
A strategy as old as Bond, James Bond
If Lexus seems like it's siding up to well-dressed secret agents, there's a reason: The brand is focused on pushing the performance of its cars, technological innovation and style--while having some fun. That kind of limits just who gets to drive its hero cars.
"We consider how our product aligns with the character who drives it," Materazzo says, and "how the integration might enable us to illuminate a core brand truth within the story.”
But the automaker wasn't specifically looking to get into the superhero business, though Black Panther was expected to be groundbreaking in bringing the character to the big screen, given that star Chadwick Boseman is the first black actor to headline a big-budget superhero film which features a largely African-American cast.
So putting Black Panther in a LS 500 sedan and LC 500 coupe in the film and marketing materials was akin to pairing James Bond with Aston Martin.
But moviegoers haven't always embraced the films Lexus has supported with product placement. In 2017, the same year "Experience Amazing" launched, Lexus developed the designs for a futuristic jet for Luc Besson's pricey sci-fi fantasy Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which didn't take off, earning just $226 million worldwide.
On the other hand, when the films work, they clearly help improve Lexus' brand image, and boost sales. It’s "Long Live the King" Super Bowl spot helped boost searches for Lexus' LS sedan by 2,500%, according to auto site Kelley Blue Book shortly after the ad launched. And online searches for Lexus rose 15% the week after Panther's debut, while the LC 500 was up 10% on its own, according to Autotrader.
Lexus recorded its best global sales year in 2018, moving 698,330 vehicles off dealership lots, an increase of 4.5%--a tough figure for anyone to reach, in what's becoming a crowded luxury auto market.
"Auto companies partnering on movies is more about exposure than sales," says Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Autotrader. This is true especially summer blockbusters that attract millions of moviegoers, she adds, noting that Nissan's affiliation with the Star Wars films enabled it to have a themed auto show exhibit, "which surely drew lots of kids with their parents in tow to an exhibit they might otherwise have skipped."
In addition to the Black Panther franchise--which Lexus isn't expected to give up though a sequel isn't expected until 2021--the automaker will likely appear in future Marvel movies. Marvel Studios' marketing mavens prefer long-term relationships with brands. For instance, Audi has been the vehicle of choice for Iron Man since 2008. Other Avengers films also featured Acura.
But it also has eyes on other franchises, as evidenced by its high-visibility role in MIB. Lexus says doesn't have a "strict rule" for how many films it wants to rally around per year, "one high profile partnership per year (feels) about right," Materazzo says. "We are actively considering several possibilities."
Whether MIB tanks or soars, Lexus’ diversification is a smart strategy for Hollywood tentpole brand integrations. Because even with all of Black Panther‘s success, if the movie proved one thing it’s that you can’t stay in Wakanda forever.

Peugeot Is Coming Back, But What Will Its Lineup Look Like?
So, Peugeot is coming back to America. Which cars and SUVs will it bring? It’s an interesting question made even more so by the fact that by 2016, when CEO Carlos Tavares first announced PSA Peugeot Citroën’s intention to return to the United States and Canada, the company was starting to engineer its latest models so as to avoid any major tear-up to adapt them to U.S. safety and emissions regulations.
Peugeot has redesigned most of its lineup since then, and the parent company already has begun certifying models for sale here, which is a long, tedious, and costly process. The automaker’s first product is already in America in the form of its car-sharing program called Free2Move, which has already launched in Washington, D.C. without any of PSA’s own models.
Next up, expect Tavares and North American PSA president Larry Dominique to announce timing of the return here, which is promised before 2026. If the reintroduction of Peugeot—it last sold cars in the U.S. in 1991—is at the latter end of its stated 10-year timeframe (the clock started ticking in 2016), most current Peugeot car and crossover SUV models probably will have been replaced with all-new versions. If the return is early in the ’20s, most existing models would only need mid-cycle refreshes.
Which Peugeots are likely to come to U.S. and Canadian dealerships? Here are my best guesses, beginning with the most-likely models:
E-Legend
This retro design EV concept premiered at the 2018 Paris show, with styling based on the lovely Pininfarina-designed 504 coupe that made its debut at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. The Paris car is powered by two electric motors producing 456 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Peugeot claims a sub-four-second zero-to-62-mph time and a range of 370 miles for this Tesla fighter. If it reaches production, it’s a no-brainer for U.S. import and would serve as Peugeot’s performance and style icon, while also helping fulfill California’s zero-emissions mandate.
3008
At 175.1 inches long, on a 105.3-inch wheelbase, the Peugeot 3008 is on the small side within the booming compact SUV segment. The also smallish Hyundai Tucson is 1.3 inches longer than the Pug, and its wheelbase is 0.2 inch shorter, for comparison. The problem with this SUV and most compact and smaller Peugeot models is that they’re powered by engines inappropriate for the U.S. market. In the U.K., it comes with either a 1.2-liter gasoline three-cylinder, or a 1.5-liter diesel four. Considering the ongoing diesel issues in the States, expect the French automaker to send us either gasoline four-cylinder engines, pure electrics like the E-Legend, and perhaps hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrains in the works using the 1.2-liter engine. Midsize Peugeots come with a 1.6-liter gasoline four, and I expect it to be the base engine for compact models coming to the U.S. The 3008, which is in the middle of Peugeot’s SUV range, is its most technologically advanced crossover, with 3D navigation, Apple CarPlay, a 180-degree backup camera, enhanced parking assist, a smart electronic tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof.
508 Fastback
An all-new midsize flagship sedan launched in Europe last year, the 508 is 187.0-inches long, on a 110.0-inch wheelbase, featuring handsome fastback styling that’s not to be confused with Mercedes-Benz CLS-class-like “four-door coupes.” Its gasoline engine options include a 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated 181 for horsepower and 184 lb-ft, although the 308 GTi Sport’s 205-hp version of the engine (see below) is more likely. Peugeot may be working on a higher-displacement version of this gas four, or a turbocharged version for our market. Like most other Peugeot models, the 508 is sold in the U.K. in trim levels starting with Active, and matriculating north through Allure, GT Line, and GT, and I’d expect the two top trim levels for the U.S., three at most. There’s also an all-new 508 wagon, although this body style has very limited appeal in the U.S., even when raised slightly and outfitted with cladding and all-wheel drive.
5008
Peugeot’s three-row SUV is barely midsize at 182.7 inches long, and the French automaker may choose to sell it here with only two rows to compete with such models as the Chevrolet Blazer and the Ford Edge. Overall height without the roof rack is 64.6 inches. The 181-hp 1.6-liter four is available here, and it’s equipped with current driver-assist systems, including blind-spot information, active lane-keep assist, advanced driver-attention assist, and automatic high beams.
2008
You’ve noticed by now that Peugeot’s cars are named with a three-digit number with “0” in the middle (a trademark forced Porsche to rename its “901” the “911” in 1964), while the SUVs get four digits with two zeros in the middle. The Peugeot 2008 is a B-segment crossover, that’s roughly five inches shorter in length and four inches shorter in height than the Buick Encore. The prospects for bringing the 2008 to North America may hinge on whether Peugeot can make the 1.6-liter PureTech (the marque’s name for its gas engines) four-cylinder fit.
308/308 GTi Sport by Peugeot Sport
If Peugeot chooses to import this compact hatchback (there’s also a station wagon version, as shown above, but forget it) that will only happen with the advent of an all-new model before the marque’s return here. For an idea of what to expect, look at the styling of the all-new Peugeot 208 subcompact (shown below). Upsize that styling to VW Golf territory and you have the next 308. It’s is sold in the U.K. with the 1.2-liter PureTech three or the 1.5 diesel, while the 208, which is on Peugeot’s latest platform, includes those engines, plus an EV model with a claimed 211-mile range. The Peugeot GTi Sport comes with a 205-hp, 244-lb-ft version of the 1.6. The GTi also comes with a Torsen limited-slip differential, 19-inch wheels, and an EAT8 automatic developed with Aisin. There’s a conventional six-speed manual available on this car, but you can almost certainly forget that, too—the additional cost of emissions certification, somewhere in the $1 to $2 million range, would not be worth it for sales in the thousands, if that many.
Market Position
Peugeot’s bigger cars, executive sedans like the C-/D-segment 508, have long been positioned in France and Western Europe as semi-premium models. When Peugeot returns, it will come here in relatively low volumes and nibble at such marques as Volkswagen, Mazda, and perhaps Subaru, and we’ll only get the higher trim levels with their more profitable margins. I think Peugeot’s cars will be positioned to strike at the upper ends of those rival brands and could perhaps even take on entry-level Volvos, Audis, and Acuras. The Peugeot 308 and 308 GTi would take on VW’s Golf and GTI and the Mazda 3; the 508 would target the VW Passat and Arteon, and perhaps upper-trim Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys; and the 3008 might aim at the Mazda CX-5 and perhaps even the Volvo XC40.
Not Likely for the U.S.
The 108 two-door, an A-class-size hatchback; the iON, a rebadged Mitsubishi i-MiEV; the Rifter small multipurpose van; the Partner commercial van; the Traveller minivan.

Acura Gets the Brand Back Together, Again
MARYSVILLE, Ohio — This marque’s cultural high point came in 1994, when The Wolf (Harvey Keitel) warned Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) there had better not be so much as one scratch on his Acura.
The movie was Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-robbed “Pulp Fiction,” and The Wolf had lent Vega and Winnfield his Acura NSX as part of his effort to clean up their botched plan to retrieve their boss’ suitcase. And yes, it was product placement.
The movie came out just as the Acura NSX was getting some attention as not just the first Japanese car to retail for more than $60,000 in the U.S., but also as one that was worth it—an affordable Ferrari alternative that could be driven around town as easily as a Honda Civic. As an engine supplier, Honda had won the last of six Formula 1 Manufacturers Championships—four with McLaren, and two with Williams—in 1991, and for the last couple of years, the McLarens wore the Acura marque as its engine supplier for North American races.
For 2019, Acura has unified its styling, having eradicated the last of its much-derided “platypus” grilles from its lineup. Like everyone else in the industry, Acura’s sport/utility business is leading its passenger car business. For the first three quarters of 2018, Acura outsold Cadillac by just 1,243 units, with 114,483 to hold onto fifth place among luxury/premium brands in the U.S. It’s still well behind fourth-place Audi for the year, by nearly 53,000 units.
Acura marketing is playing up the marque’s technological advances and its longstanding image as a driver’s brand, led by its halo, the fabulous hybrid NSX supercar. The full-line event took place at the 170,000 square-foot NSX factory, where approximately 100 workers assemble the midengine car by hand. Here’s a quick look at what I saw and what I drove:
2019 Acura ILX A-Spec
The compact ILX is the last Acura model to benefit from a redesign featuring the new, five-point grille and the dual hood strakes. The rear license plate pocket has been moved from between the taillamps down to the bumper, giving the tail a stronger, more massive look.
The new design is handsome, if a bit anonymous, and it doesn’t fix the Acura ILX’s biggest problem. The ’19 model is a refresh, rather than a full redesign, and thus is based on the Mark IX Honda Civic and not the far superior Mark X Civic that premiered three model years ago. So the old 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four also is a holdover, combined with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with torque converter.
This unusual hybrid tranny is very smooth. It launches the car and shifts more smoothly than even the best wet-clutch DCTs, though it’s a bit of a downer that there are no new Acuras available with a Honda manual, still among the best gearboxes available.
The four’s 201 horsepower is adequate, though not special. The ride-handling balance seems just right for a premium compact with somewhat superficial sporting pretensions, with a smooth ride and some compliance in the corners (our Central Ohio drive route didn’t serve up any particularly challenging roads). The steering is too light, though, and lacking in feel and feedback, and the rather heavy understeer is a reminder of how far the ’16 Civic has come in this department.
In its defense, Acura has shaved $2,110 off the base price of the ILX, bringing it in at $26,895 for 2019, near the top-spec levels of the Civic. The A-Spec, with its special paint options and spectacular blood red leather seats with Alcantara center-seat trim, is $30,645 with the premium package and $32,545 with the technology package. The A-Spec still lacks a front passenger seat power lumbar control.
The ILX is the bestselling premium compact in its class, among Millennials, Acura says [the others in that segment are the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A220]. Choose an A-Spec with Still Night Pearl dark blue paint over that blood red interior, and you’ve got a vibrant look that’s hard to match in a Honda Civic, even the Si or Type R. Still, I can’t help but think that if Honda could be convinced to let Acura spend development money on something that’s not an SUV, an Acura based off the Type R, with a small rear wing and toned-down sedan body, slightly softer suspension but with the 306-hp 2.0-liter turbo and six-speed manual would make a dandy replacement for this car.

2019 Acura NSX
Editor-in-chief Mike Floyd has a thorough review of this supercar’s mid-cycle update, which features new, stickier Continental SportContact 6 tires designed specifically for the car, and retuned adaptive dampers, electronic power steering, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, vehicle stability assist and stiffer front and rear stabilizer bars to work better with the new tires.
I got a total of about nine laps in the 2019 Acura NSX at the Transportation Research Center’s 1.9-mile road circuit, the first three on cold tires in sub-50 degree weather. I’d rather drive the old and new cars back-to-back to confirm Acura’s claims that turn-in is quicker and rotation around the corners in the midengine car is more progressive and predictable. All I can say is that the turn-in is about as close to perfect as you could want, without the too light nose that plagues so many rear-engine Porsches, and progressive rotation that’s easier to adjust than in a mid-engine 718. The Acura NSX is as easy to drive fast, confidently, as a BRZ/86 or Miata/Fiata, though with 500 horsepower being fed to the four wheels via Super Handling AWD torque vectoring.
Acura also showed off the NSX’s new Thermal Orange Pearl paint option. Several cars were making their way through the model’s bespoke factory during our tour. The only bad news plaguing the NSX is disappointing sales—it’s hard to imagine what Honda or Acura might put in this plant to supplement capacity utilization. Acura says it has sold about 2,000 NSXes, all built in Marysville, Ohio, and shipped globally.
In the U.S., Acura sold 850 NSXes in 2016 and ’17, while McLaren sold 1,193 of its Sport Series models here in those two years. Year to date, Acura has sold just 122 in the U.S., so far. So go check out the Acura NSX, rich enthusiasts.
2019 Acura NSX Specifications
ON SALE Now PRICE $159,300 (base) ENGINE 3.5-liter twin-turbo DOHC 24-valve V-6/500 hp @ 6500-7500 rpm, 406 lb-ft @ 2000-6000 rpm, plus three electric motors. 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec
It’s reassuring to see that young Billy Rehbock had as much trouble with the two-screen infotainment system as I had. Acura lent me a white RDX A-Spec to drive the 204 miles between Detroit and Columbus, Ohio, and back, and I gave up on using the navigation system when I couldn’t find the keyboard to type in my destination address. Instead, I plugged in my iPhone and used Apple CarPlay.
The controls for changing radio stations, or to go between FM and XM are barely more intuitive, but once underway, the RDX was the right kind of SUV for this trip. It’s not too big, although it feels more like a midsize two-row instead of a compact SUV from the inside, and it’s comfortable and compliant without being too soft. Steering turn-in is quite crisp, and my only complaint about dynamics is the steering felt a bit busy on long, straight roads, needing a bit too much minor correction. May be the tires.
The A-Spec interior has the same leather-and-Alcantara red and black seats as the ILX A-Spec, but there’s also Alcantara trim on the middle of the passenger-side dash. Nice touch.
In Marysville, Acura showed off the RDX’s fourth-generation AWD software, which can shift up to 70 percent torque to the rear and up to 100 percent to a single wheel, just like Gen III, but more quickly. On a wet skidpad, the RDX was easier to drift than an AWD TLX with Gen III software, and on a rally-style rock-and-gravel twisty road, the RDX caught itself out of a slide more quickly, though the MDX with Gen III software was looser, and thus more fun to a frustrated rally driver like me.
The all-new, 2019 Acura RDX has crisper handling than most of its Asian and American premium competitors and with a much better ride than its German and Italian competitors. The 2.0-liter turbo is more refined, with more useful power than pretty much any other downsized turbo four in an AWD SUV. The Acura RDX has the rare combination, for an SUV, of crisp handling and good ride quality, like the Mazda CX-5, but with a more premium interior and a better, more powerful engine.
2019 Acura RDX Specifications
ON SALE Now PRICE (as tested) $46,895 ENGINE 2.0L turbocharged DOHC 16-valve I-4/272 hp @ 6,500 rpm, 280 lb-ft @ 1,600-4,500 rpm TRANSMISSION 10-speed automatic LAYOUT 4-door, 5-passenger front-engine AWD sport/utility EPA MILEAGE 21/26 mpg (city/highway) L x W x H 186.8 x 74.8 x 65.7 in WHEELBASE 108.3 in WEIGHT 4,068 lb 0-60 MPH 7.5 sec (est) TOP SPEED 130 mph (est)
The Classics
Acura also gave us time to drive perfectly maintained cars from its Torrance, California museum: a ’91 NSX Formula Red, ’01 Integra Type R, and ’03 3.2CL Type-S. I didn’t get time to drive the NSX, though I drove a couple of the last first-generation models about 2004 or ’05, and I can say the new NSX faithfully captures the spirit of that car. Acura doesn’t need to replicate the stiffly suspended, high-rev/low-torque model of the ’01 Integra Type R, though a new model following my suggestion above would make a good modern interpretation.

[OC] The Cadillac ATS is the Car Enthusiasts Asked for, but Nobody Bought via /r/cars
[OC] The Cadillac ATS is the Car Enthusiasts Asked for, but Nobody Bought
So if you go on the forums, and talk to people about their favorite sport sedans, usually one of the most common front runners would be the BMW E46. Ask them why, and they’ll talk about how the E46 had a perfectly balanced chassis, a brilliant manual transmission, solid engine choices, and a great driving position. This is usually followed up by complaints about how no automaker makes anything like it anymore, alongside claims that people will definitely go buy one if available.
Yet the thing is, there is a car out there, that you can buy brand new off a dealer lot today just like it. In fact, it has been around for quite a few years now, the Cadillac ATS. In fact, I’d argue, the ATS is arguably a better drivers car than the E46, and it could be argued to be the single best enthusiasts sports sedan on the market today.
During development of the ATS, the Cadillac engineers straight up said that they benchmarked the E46 when it comes to driving dynamics, while trying their best to reduce weight, and it definitely shows. The weight distribution is nearly 50/50, and the handling is definitely more “sports car” than “luxury sedan” (rumors say that the ATS has a better chassis setup than the Corvette even).
The moment you step into the ATS and start driving, you’ll quickly realize that it is special. I have almost never driven a sedan like that, where you can always feel the advantages of driving a longer wheelbase sedan (verses say, something like a BRZ), with the high speed stability, airy passenger cabin, and the complaint ride, but at speed, it almost feels like the car magically shrinks around you.
The difference between an ATS and say, a Mustang, Acura ILX or a C class is immediately apparent. All you have to do is to get up to highway speeds, and then start quickly darting from lane to lane. A quick sharp turn of the wheel to the left side and you’re immediately in the left lane, while a quick sharp turn to the right and you’re immediately back into the right lane. The car is stable, mostly flat (with only minimal body roll), and the steering is always complaint. Try the same with a Mustang, and you can feel the car dive and roll into each turn, while try it fast enough with an ILX, and you’re going to start getting hints of understeer urging you to turn the wheel less.
Steering wise, the ZF electric rack is arguably one of the best steering racks on the market today. It strikes a good balance between the best feature of electric racks (linear, adjustable steering weight), with the best parts of hydraulic racks (the feedback). It isn’t completely detached like say, an Infiniti Q50 with steer by wire, but it also doesn’t transmit every single little crack into the cabin, negatively impacting NVH. As for braking, even the basest model ATS comes with 4 caliper Brembo disks up front. The response is linear, and it is very difficult to make the brakes fade with even “slightly past the point of legal” driving on public roads. Of course, better brakes are optional, and come standard on the ATS-V.
Your choice of engine in the ATS is essentially your choice of experience, a different motor completely changes the character of the car. The 2.0 Turbo gets you oodles of torque at any rev range, and although there is a little bit of turbo lag (much less if you use premium instead of regular gasoline), it is totally predictable and controllable. Pick the 2.0 Turbo if you want a civilized, effortless cruiser with minimal noise and no drama. As for the naturally aspirated V6, it needs to be wrung out, and pushed close to the red line and kept high in the RPM range. It’s a high revving DOHC V6, so think Nissan 370z. The twin turbo v6 of course, is the best engine the ATS offers, combines the strength of both engines while turning everything up to 11. Now of course, I wish the ATS was offered with the Camaro’s LT1 V8, but even without it, the ATS does have a solid engine lineup.
Transmission wise you get an OK GM 8 speed auto (good transmission for the drag strip and if you leave it in drive, paddle response is a bit slow) and what I will argue is one of the best manual transmissions on the market today, purely on the basis of the no lift shift. It is almost magic the first time you figure it out, you can keep your right foot pinned down, pedal to the metal, while every time you need to shift you don’t need to let off the gas, just depress the clutch and move the shifter. The ECU deals with literally everything else.
Cadillac even offered enthusiast friendly configurations and trim setups. You can get the ATS in either sedan or coupe, and RWD versions with the 2.0 Turbo and ATS-Vs have a 6 speed manual option. The manual transmission is a no-cost option, but here’s the thing: When you pick the manual, you don’t just get a different transmission, you also get a limited slip differential. Price wise the base ATS is price competitive with the F30 320i, but you get loads more power, and a standard LSD.
Compared to the E46 3 Series, the ATS is better in almost every single way. You get more power standard, a more complaint chassis, and better transmission options. Even the much derided CUE and the hated gauge cluster is better than the E46, even at its worst, CUE is leaps and bounds better than 2004 iDrive, and the much hated gauge cluster in the ATS still compares well with the one in E46 and E90 BMWs.
But here’s the thing, Cadillac made a better E46 in an era when even BMW have moved away from what made the E46 great. What are the best selling luxury sedans on the market today? In 2017, the 5 best selling luxury sedans in the US was the Mercedes Benz C class, Lexus ES, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti Q50, and BMW 5 series, all sedans which project a sporty image, but are actually all luxury cruiser first, sports sedan second. Hell, Cadillac’s own best selling sedan is the XTS, an old fashioned FWD luxobarge, designed to float over bumps.
So there you go, Cadillac made a better E46, in an era where the market is asking for the F30. Cadillac sold barely any of them, and unfortunately, the 2018 is the last year for the sedan, and the 2019 will be the last year for the coupe.
However, that brings me to my last point. Often we joke that enthusiasts wish for cars that were used from the factory, as they don’t exactly want to pay for the first owner depreciation. Well, here’s the thing, because Cadillac barely sold any of them, over here Cadillac Canada offers $8300 incentive on every single ATS, AND you can finance the car at 0% for 72 months. Combined with the fact that any Cadillac dealer would easily lower the price further if it means you took a slow selling ATS off their hands, the ATS is the closest thing you’ll ever get to “used from the factory”
As for me, I looked really close at a 2017 coupe, but ended up with the Mustang. Why? because I'm not much of an enthusiast in the classic sense. My number one priority on any car is the color, and I just didn't like Cadillac's blue.

2019 Acura ILX A-Spec Specifications
ON SALE Now PRICE (as tested) $30,645 – $32,545 (with Premium Package/with Tech Package) ENGINE 2.4L DOHC 16-valve I-4, 201 hp @ 6,800 rpm/180 lb-ft. @ 3,600 rpm TRANSMISSION 8-speed dual-clutch automatic LAYOUT 4-door, 5 passenger, FWD sedan EPA MILEAGE 24/28 mpg (city/highway) L x W x H 182.2 x 70.6 x 55.6 in WHEELBASE 105.1 in. WEIGHT 3,144-3,148 lbs 0-60 MPH 7 sec (est) TOP SPEED 130 mph (est)
