If you gave me the ability to make a house it would be quite brightly colored except for places like bedrooms and activityrooms. To get nearly anywhere you'd have to do some sort of exercise.

The wife spent part of her childhood in I believe Myanmar as her mom and dad moved the family to the locations her mom’s work empowering women (even back in those days!) took them. My client has such an appreciation for that culture and an incredible time of her life, so I wanted to make sure that was reflected somewhere in the design. Finished churchbuilding

The churchbuilding for churchims is done. Church elders Howard Maher, Kylian Freeman and Solomon Eaten are taking a look before it opens for their community.

Solomon: This is looking way better then last time.

Kylian: O, wow! This is such a big auditorium!

Howard: With enough seating for now.

Solomon: It will fit more chairs if we place them closer together.

Howard: Upstairs has also room for more chairs. Let's go look

Kylian: This is looking way better then I ever thought it would be.

Solomon: How did they fix the rooms in the basement, Howard?

Howard: Well they added another wall, that was done pretty easily. Now we have first the two bathrooms, then on the left our room for meetings and it will be used for sunday school, on the right the nursery with an bedroom when the childeren need to nap, and at the end is the activityroom for the teens and childeren.

Kylian: I'm very impressed with all of it.

Howard: And I heard Solomon's wedding will be the first service held in this building, isn't it Solomon?

Solomon: Yes it will be. I'm very excited to finaly marry Hannah.

Kylian: Samantha can't wait for her to become part of the family. She always wanted her brothers to marry so she would have more sisters. But so far only Seth has gotten married. So she is very excited for you and Hannah.

Solomon: Yeah, I know. Hannah likes having an older sister like Samantha. I'm glad they are getting along. That's all I wanted.

Kylian: and it means we still can hang out.

Solomon: Exactly!

CASESTUDIES // housing asylum seekers

Three projects compared on location, duration, size, residents-mix, space per person and public facilties. 

AZC Rijswijk is located on an industrial terrain and has space for 500 asylum seekers. Each asylum seeker has 5 m2 of space besides access to a school, activityroom and studyroom. These facilities are not available for neighbours. The project is temporary and consists of containers. 

Plan Einstein is located in a neighbourhood and housed 558 asylum seekers and 52 students. It is unknown how much space is reservered per resident. There is a lot of public space and activities which can also be used by residents in the surrounding neighbourhood: a language cafe, studyspaces, gardening... The project was temporary on this location but has been moved to another location in the mean time because of the success. It was situated in an old office building.

Grandhotel Cosmopolis is located in the city centre and besides housing 60 asylum seekers functions as a hotel as well as 20 ateliers for artists. Each room is 15m2. A cafe, bar, cinema room, studyspace and communal kitchen are available for use by all the residents and neighbours can visit the cafe/bar as well. The project is permanent and is situated in an old a geriatric home.
