Here's an interesting article from Nature. The title is a bit generic and makes it seem like there's nationwide dolphin attacks happening, but in reality it's about a single male Indo-pacific bottlenose dolphin that has been frequenting a bay for some years, seeking out human contact, and now there's increasing conflict.
Solitary sociable cetaceans are not a new phenomenon, they have been known for decades, and from all around the world. There's regular reports going back to the 1800's, and Pliny the younger even wrote of a solitary dolphin in 109 AD.
Wherever they go, these solitary dolphins (often bottlenoses) attract attention. In some rare cases a good, mutually beneficial relationship develops, as with Fungie the Dingle bay resident (who sadly passed away in 2020, aged over 40).
However, often things get out of hand, not in the least due to media attention and all manner of people seeking "that special bond" and "magical experience" of meeting a dolphin in the wild. They are so friendly and angelic and surely this one must love to interact with me because why else are they here?
But dolphins are wild animals, and they can and do regularly harm humans. Even when they seek out these interactions themselves, when both parties don't know how to conduct themselves around one another, injuries happen. Often, in the end, it's the dolphin that pays the price. Frequently their life is cut short by propeller blades, or they are otherwise injured by human activity. In rare cases there's a happy end, where either equilibrium is found, or the dolphin rejoins their conspecifics. I think it is an interesting observation (and perhaps 'antidote') in this time of "meeting dolphins in captivity = bad and they must hate people, meeting dolphins in the wild = amazing interaction with a free spirit that can't possibly go wrong".
For further reading, here's an interesting overview of known cases of solitary sociable cetaceans, and some of the concerns.
And if you want to read of a very interesting individual case: here is an initial report of attempts to "educate" JoJo the solitary bottlenose dolphin from the Turks and Caicos Islands, on proper human interaction etiquette. The intervention was successful as JoJo continues to live there to this day, and has been assigned a personal human guardian who is trained to provide him with the social interaction he needs. This way his aggressive and sexual interactions with other people has been mitigated.

Snippet Sunday Tuesday
Still focused on finishing Hollowed Out (ao3) and The Sus Boy Next Door (ao3), but here's a sneak peak at a request fill in progress 👀
“You know babe,” you say as you turn the page of your paperback. “More people are staring at you now than they would have if you’d worn appropriate beach attire.”
You push your sunglasses down your nose to peek out at your miserable boyfriend, who’s pouting beneath the umbrella in the beach chair beside you. He’s dressed in his usual attire: jeans, baseball cap, hoodie pulled up over his cap. Except, he isn’t in Gotham City. He’s on a beach, in a tropical paradise, surrounded by beachgoers in their swimsuits. It’s upwards of 100 degrees out. You have no idea how he hasn’t passed out from the heat.
“I still don’t know why we had to come here. Ocean’s ocean,” he grumbles, slouching lower into his chair, hat sliding forward to cover more of his face, bare feet sinking deeper into the sand. Somehow you’d managed to convince him to take his sneakers off at least.
“No, this is supposed to be the most beautiful beach in Turks and Caicos. And we don’t have a beach, dear. We have a pier.”
“And a pool. And I’m pretty sure I saw some sand.”
You sigh, turning back to your book. “I did suggest we go skiing instead, but you insisted on somewhere warm.” You don’t have to look up to know that he’s grimacing like he does when you’re right.
“When I rented an entire house overlooking the ocean for just the two of us I assumed we’d stay at our own private ocean.”
You glance over at him again, and can’t help but smile at how pitiful he looks, with his hands stuffed into the pocket of his hoodie, big beads of sweat dripping down the side of his petulant face. He must’ve finished the paperback you’d slipped out of the back pocket of his jeans and placed in his hands to keep him occupied—a trick you’d learned from babysitting your four year old cousin.
You furtively fold down the corner of the page to mark your place in your book. The man haaaaaates when you do that, like you're desecrating an ancient, sacred text, and not his beat-up, second-hand copy of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
“What are you doing?” he asks, his pout melting away to a hopeful expression.
“Packing up,” you reply as you slide the book into your beach bag and begin to fold up your towel.
“We’re leaving?” he says, his pale blue eyes pleading, like a kid who’s waiting to find out if he gets to go to Disney World.
“I suppose there are some activities that we can only do in our private ocean.”

Questions!!
What would be the one thing Tyler could never forgive?
Does Esme ever find having so many kids overwhelming?
I know both Addie and Takota especially have shown signs of anxiety, do they worry they will always have to deal with it.
How does TJ feel about his mental health issues
Fun
Is there anything that truly embarrasses Tyler?
Is there anything besides Crocs that Esme wears that he absolutely hates?
Is there anything that Tyler wears that she absolutely hates?
Do they want to travel more? Where do they want to go next as a couple and as a family?
When they first started living together, were there any quirks about each other that surprised them?
Does Esme have her own surfboard?
Has Tyler ever had to set his own bone?
Is Esme a crier over pain?
He could definitely never forgive cheating. That would be the one that would completely break them as a couple. As far as other people go, it would be if they betrayed him to those who hold grudges against him and would do anything to get their revenge, including hurting his wife and kids
The level of noise in the house and the constant running around for different after school activities, friend groups, sports, et,c sometimes does get to her. It's so very easy to stretch yourself thin, and she tends to take on way too much, even though she isn't doing all of it by herself. and did I mention the level of noise in that place? ;)
Esme and Tyler both harbour some unease about it, and worry about their futures. Both likely had anxiety themselves as kids (and for good reason) and never had it dealt with. In the end, they turned into undiagnosed adults with shitty coping mechanisms. They want better for their kiddos.
As he matures, he finds that his issues aren't as overwhelming anymore. He has signs of ADHD but has only been diagnosed with Intermittent Explosive Disorder. Medications keeps that under control, and he's very good at taking them every day. As he gets older, he'll find other ways of dealing with things and healthy outlets (like surfing, working out etc) to combat bad moments.
FUN
I don't think there's anything that truly embarrasses him to the point of no return (LOL), but Esme is the one person who can make him blush. He jokes about hating being called certain things (after all, he's big and bad and can kick major ass and doesn't want to ruin his reputation) but if she dares to say he's cute or adorable or she teases him about having the 'feels' for her way back when, he's totally turning red. Starts in the cheeks and goes right to the tips of his ears lol
His hatred and disdain are reserved solely for the Crocs lol
There is a grey knit sweater that she absolutely despises and wishes she could sneak out of the house and either bury it or burn it. And while she doesn't necessarily hate his collection of board shorts, she does wish he'd stop buying the damn things lol
They've been very fortunate when it comes to travelling. The two places they really want to go as a couple are Iceland (and stay in one of those glass igloo/hotel rooms) and Nepal. As a family, they go to Disney World every second year and so far, the kids haven't expressed in going anywhere else. They've taken them to Paris, to the Amalfi Coast, to Turks and Caicos.
I think the fact that he has those OCD traits and extreme cleanliness shocked her, because where he'd been living was a complete disaster. But that was a chronically drunk and hopped up on pain meds Tyler. The Tyler she got was someone working hard to stay sober and clean, so the 'real' him showed more. I think he was surprised at how organized she enjoys being. And how someone so small can be such a blanket thief. And of course, her talking in her sleep to the point he can carry on a conversation with her.
She does have her own surfboard. Pink, purple, yellow, and white stripes :)
He has, unfortunately. A few times. And he's popped a dislocated shoulder back into place too many times to count. Which (despite seeing him practically dead) freaks Esme out every time lol
It takes a lot of pain for her to cry over it. She managed to give birth to a ten pound, nine ounce baby completely unmedicated. As well as a set of twins. She has a high pain threshold for a tiny thing.

Everyday is a new adventure, right? Right. Today was no exception, only I did something I’ve wanted to do for years. Yes, I said YEARS.
I ventured with my two best friends to the Lavender Farm where we spent time with each other among the beautiful aroma of lavender, the pollinating bees and three equine friends. When I first decided this was something I wanted to do, we were in the height of the pandemic. The farm wasn’t open to visitors. So, waiting was in the cards. I think, however, it was worth the wait. My 57 pictures from today would probably say the same thing.
We were surrounding by various shades of purple and green emanating their pleasant (and naturally bug repelling) aroma. I could have called this heaven. But that means, I’d need sun screen 24/7 as we were in open fields. The sky was overcast and we did encounter a brief shower - not enough to scare us away though. We ventured the rows of the fields looking for the sprigs we deemed “just right” to snip from the mother plant. The bees were content enough to share, but I am sure they’d prefer if we did not snip their plants for our bouquets for the sole purpose of decor and addition of pleasant aroma to our homes. Surprisingly, there were two horses and one pony in the midst of everything. Much to my chagrin, there wasn’t feed. Therefore, interaction with the beautiful creatures was limited, but much loved.
The farm also had a lovely shop that featured every way in which lavender could be used. For libations, culinary uses, bath and body items and candles, among other things. I purchased a pre-cut bouquet of lavender to hang above my window. For some reason, in my mind - it’s going to bring me positive energies through my window. I also acquired a t-shirt, which if you know me in real life, you know I do NOT need another t-shirt. And lastly, I purchased foaming hand soap and a linen/all purpose spray.
Our excursion was followed up with a much needed lunch. I think we built up our appetites as we walked the fields (although, they were not extensive). Cracker Barrel was a surprise selection for all of us, but we enjoyed the comfort food, and the shop in the front. Maybe we enjoyed the shop a little too much. At any rate, it was a very well spent afternoon. It was one of those afternoon’s that are often wished for, but seldom repeated.
And that my friends, is the worst part, the lack of time available for these types of activities as one ages. Adulthood is wished for by the young with such strong fervor, but there’s no doubt that those wishes come with ignorance to how much being an adult is NOT what we all think it’s cracked up to be. Gone are the days of saying, “I have plans with so-and-so. See ya later, Dad”. Now, responsibility takes over. At 37, I’m well aware of this lesson, but it still “gets” me at times.
Our attempt to avoid the time in between visits is to work on my bucket-Iist. To be honest, I’m still trying to figure half of that out. But as I think of things, I will let the girls know, and I know they’ll be there to do, see, help, accomplish, tackle- whatever the idea brings with it. Our next one is a simple sleep over. Like in high-school. John Hughes movies, pizza, ice cream, girl talk. And we also discussed a trip over seas to Turks and Caicos. I’m all about travel. I LOVE TRAVEL. I just get hesitant to long term plan as I never know what “mood” my body is going to decide to be in and for how long. I know my friends are very patient and understanding when it comes to that part of it, but it doesn’t make it easier for me.
The limitations of my body have been (and continue to be) the most difficult part of my diagnosis. This brings me back to Mom-Mom’s favorite saying, I’ll tackle this “One Day at a Time”.
One frustration for this weekend coming up, is I want to travel to the family reunion, but my body is not cooperating. A few hours away from home and my body is screaming at me to have pain medication and lay in bed. But when I do so, my mind is racing so much that I inevitably get up and do some small task in my room just to settle that feeling of needing to be in action/move/accomplish/do. I am nervous for my fundraising walk at the end of September. If I feel this way now, can I walk 3.1 miles (5K)? I’ll crawl if I have to. I have too much determination. Not to mention my support system keeps growing my team and I know they’ll help me make it. The entire time, we can push onward with the mantra of “F” Cancer. The girls surprised me with hoodies for the walk that are Metastatic Awareness colors. I cried like a baby, I’ve never felt so supported by my friends - not to say that they’ve never cared, but this is a whole other level of care and concern that is hugely touching and heart filling. I feel lucky for all of the people I have in my life that I have been able to count on during this time and while having this disease. And all I can say, is thank you while doing my best to be there for them to show my gratitude in return.
Well, this was a lengthy one folks. Thanks for bearing with me as I rambled on yet again.
El Fin.

TLR chapters 7 & 8
Click here for the rest of the series!
Click to see the rest of the snark & image descriptions
Chapter 7
No free food or drinks are allowed outside the staff cafeteria. It’s why I’m guzzling water instead of some fruity cocktail adorned with a frilly umbrella straw. I can’t afford a fifteen-dollar margarita on a regular Wednesday! Are you insane? In this economy?
I would question which guests can afford a fucking $15 beverage… But the answer is: people who travel to Turks and Caicos and stay at a fancy resort.
“We’ve been pretty lucky so far this hurricane season,” Lara muses out loud. She must be on her weather app. She checks it a lot. She’s a constant worrier when it comes to tropical storms. If there’s so much as a rain cloud in the sky, she’s going to duck for cover. “But storm watchers are tracking—” . . . gibberish . . . boring . . . don’t care . . . “Uh-huh.” “It could be really bad. Winds at really high speeds. A ton of rain.”
FORESHADOWING!!
Having had enough, I look away from them and down my drink in one fast go. “Come on, I’m done swimming. Let’s go play tennis.” I want to hit some balls really, really hard.
Chapter 7 summary: Paige, Lara, and Camila hang out at one of the pools, within line of sight of where Blaze is tending to the bar. Paige is only focused on one thing. Lara is obsessing over the latest hurricane data. (Again, this is probably going to be important later.) Blaze comes over and tells them that he put vodka sodas with lime into the plastic water cups for them. However, before he can do anything else, Cole comes out and starts glaring at all of them. Blaze runs back to the bar. Then another employee, Tamara, comes over and starts talking with Cole. Despite how much she hates him, Paige sees red when Cole doesn’t remove Tamara’s hand from his arm.
Chapter 8
I led a group through the caverns of the Conch Bar Caves in the morning and then took a family out paddleboarding through Chalk Sound National Park in the afternoon.
So Todd wants to cut Paige’s job, but my main question is… Why aren’t there more people to help guests do activities? It seems like it’s a popular thing to want guided activities. So why aren’t there like 10 other people who can take more guests out? (Obviously, for a fee.) It’s like having a money printing machine, and then chucking it out the window. PEOPLE WANT TO DO THINGS WHEN THEY’RE ON HOLIDAY!! LET THEM PAY FOR IT!!
I worked a standard day at the resort: I led a group through the caverns of the Conch Bar Caves in the morning and then took a family out paddleboarding through Chalk Sound National Park in the afternoon. After dinner, I played tennis with Lara, Camila, and Théo.
How the hell does she have the energy to do three things in one day? I’m exhausted simply thinking about doing literally one of those things.
“Could have fooled me. C’mon, you’re probably just missing home. Your old life. Some girl that’s waiting for you back in —” “Ohio.” I snapped. “Right. Ohio. The land of . . . hot dogs?” “Buckeyes.” “Right, you miss your buckeyes, which are a type of bean . . . ?” “Tree.”
I am 34 years old, and this is the first time that I’m learning what a fucking buckeye is. (I have never been to Ohio.)
I imagine if we polled a group of board-certified psychiatrists, they would unanimously agree that Cole and I are dysfunctional at best, damaging on average, and at worst downright destructive. The product packaging for our relationship would warn that prolonged contact with Cole Clark or Paige Young may result in nausea, bleeding from the ears, and homicidal tendencies.
Is it bad that I kind of agree? I’m not really commenting either way on how likely it is that they’ll be long-term or not. But what I’m saying is that they both seem attracted to each other, but that’s merely surface level. It’s literally lust. Mainly because Cole is socially awkward and Paige is pretty. They don’t seem to have much in common. I’m not saying that they’re going to be a toxic shitshorm, like Paige is implying. All I’m saying is that they’re not well-suited for each other beyond MAYBE a few months of fun.
Fortunately, Blaze started working at Siesta Playa two weeks later. A perfect distraction.
Chapter 8 summary: Paige tells us of how she’d “accidentally kissed” Cole 2 months earlier. (The wording there is intentional, so please keep it in mind.) She was walking back to her dorm after a long day, and saw Cole sitting alone on the beach. He seemed sad, so she thought that she’d…? Cheer him up? I’m not quite sure what her end-goal was, but whatever. He was reading what I take to be a rather retrospective novel, and Paige was trying to comfort him. However, after a moment, it’s obvious that her main line of comfort is distraction (which I guess), so she tells him to get up, take his clothes off; that they’re going to go for a midnight swim. They swim over to a sandbar, where he pulls her out of the water. Then, because they’re so close to one another, they kind of start to kiss. And I’m fine with the kissing business. What kind of threw me is the fact that Cole got to second base. You don’t “accidentally” let somebody lick your nipple! But then Paige kind of remembered that she doesn’t like Cole all that much, and ran off. The next morning, they agree that last night never happened. However, despite this agreement, they then spend about half a page discussing this! Why! Paige was anxious about others finding out at first. But then, she began to relax, and quickly slipped into her fantasies about that night going so much differently than it had.

The Personal Agenda I (Part 1)
Hello, all! I thought I'd share this with you. I have had a plan for my life since about the year 2006, which I developed after I graduated from Harvard University in 2005 (class of 2002). I used to call it The Plan then I called it The Agenda/The Agenda I, and now it is called The Personal Agenda I. So far, I have developed two Personal Agendas - The Personal Agenda I and The Personal Agenda II. I am actually immortal (I have the genes for it), even though I am trying to achieve immortality. In fact, all that talk of anti-aging and immortality you see out there? That's because of me. So, the personal agendas are what to do with my life. I'm not sure if I'll ever stop creating them. So far, the stuff to do in each agenda lasts a long time. The documents are not perfect. They are still a work in progress. But, I have refined them over and over again throughout the years, culimating in these masterpieces. Here is part one of The Personal Agenda I, for your viewing pleasure:

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter. Better yet! Check out “Heart of the Game, Fredonia” and see if they can sell you those D12’s with the symbols on them. Tell them “Shujin Tribble” sentcha. And “Hail, Hail, Fredonia!” Home of the Blue Devil!
Even though it’s still only just barely into the New Year, you need a vacation. And since we’re nothing if not cheap, we’ll just tell you where you should go even if you can’t afford it. And, no! We’re not going to tell you to Go To Hell. Chances are you’ve already been told that enough times this week.
Aries
We’re dropping you off just north of the Dominican Republic at Turks & Caicos! This collection of roughly 100 islands is popular with honeymooners and for good reason: sparkling white sand, crystal-clear water, and nearly 350 miles of colourful coral reef! Be sure to spend a day or two lounging on Grace Bay Beach with plenty of opportunities to snorkel, scuba dive, and ride horses along the coast. So This Week… Be sure to check your horse’s belly strap before you go riding. Not because you’re liable to fall but because you want to know if you’re on a stallion or a mare. Trust us, there is a difference in temperament.
Taurus
If you bend an ear you’ll enjoy all the art and flowers and canal-lined streets and "coffee shops" and high-end boutiques… Welcome to Amsterdam! Yes, you could enjoy the art or the food or the bicycling… and you can have a stop to enjoy the street food scene by eating herring or Dutch fries, or satisfy your sweet tooth with stroopwafels. So This Week… Buy some stroopwafels at your local grocery store and TRY to imagine they aren’t Cock-Waffles. We DARE you.
Gemini
WELP! If picturesque beaches and warm weather are what you're after, look no further than the British Virgin Islands! You’ll have easy access to Smuggler's Cove and Brewers Bay. And if you book your hotel room on Tortola, the area's largest island, you can hop between the smaller islands on boat tours. So This Week… Re-learn all your maritime terminology before you try to steal a 20-sail pirate clipper. Oh, and buy some sea sickness pills.
Cancer Moon-Child
This might be a little weird, but you’re getting sent to the “U-A-E”! the United Arab Emirates, specifically to Dubai. You COULD do something simple, like visit the Dubai Mall. Or how about indoor Ski Dubai? And how about freaking out after getting to the top of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on the planet, at over 800 Meters tall. So This Week… We know you wanted to know, so - it would take just shy of 13 seconds for you to go “SPLAT!” after jumping off that thing, with an impact of over Seven-Hundred-Thousand joules. So don’t do that! It might not hurt YOU, but it’ll hurt someone else.
Leo
We’re sending you to the largest island in French Polynesia - Tahiti! And just to get you over your fear of the ocean we’ve booked you into a lavish overwater bungalow. And once you’ve stopped having a panic attack, there’s prime snorkeling and surfing conditions all around you. If you're staying on dry land you COULD look for more cultural activities, like the island's temples, or shop for Tahitian pearls. So This Week… Don't ask what a pearl necklace is worth here. Just trust us.
Virgo
Your vacation is just a chance for you to get away from everything and be calm, peaceful, and serene. We’re sending you to the lush Indonesian paradise of Bali. Right now it’s the dry season, so beachtime will be perfect. Follow that up with tours through some temples, and finish up with dinner in the village of Kintamani, home to a towering (and active) volcano. So This Week… If you take a Balinese cooking class and the instructor suggests heating your pan in the magma, IT’S A TRICK! DON’T DO IT!
Libra
Talk about an historic location, your destination brings you to one of the original Seven Natural Wonders of the World! A place with, literally, one-of-a-kind scenery. You’ll be looking through some of the over 600 islands and 1,500-plus species of fish, but you better be careful with them all. You’ll be Underwater up the coast of Queensland, Australia and snorkeling in Australia's Great Barrier Reef! It will be a bit dangerous, being that it’s ’stralia, but we trust you not to do anything life threatening. So This Week… learn what Ozzie plants you are NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH - specifically the “Gympie-Gympie”. Do NOT touch it! Seriously! This is No Joke! You WILL want to die!
Scorpio
The best part about your destination is you pretty well already know the local language and cuisine. Take your choices from historical landmarks and modern-day attractions, London, England is a world unto itself. Do things the easy way: join a tour that takes you to the Tate Modern art institution, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Borough Market, and the British Museum. And once you’re done there, have a sit down classic afternoon tea. But plan on a weekend trip to share a Sunday roast at a local pub. So This Week… get used to the taste of Malt Vinegar because you WILL be shot on sight for trying to put ketchup on your Fish-n-Chips!
Sagittarius
Not only are you headed to a beautiful city overlooking the Balearic Sea, but you’ll get an amazing theme song out of it. You’re headed out to Barcelona, Spain! Walk through Medieval architecture, take in the intricate Basílica de la Sagrada Família, and enjoy Antoni Gaudí's whimsical creations in Park Güell. Spend some time in the water at Barceloneta beach before checking out the restaurants and bars along Las Ramblas at all hours of the night… which will be perfect for your jet lagged brain. So This Week… find your old Spanish notes from High School and try to remember if you were taught Castilian Spanish or not. It WILL make a difference in how you’re treated.
Capricorn
Regardless if you say it cah-RIB-bee-ahn, or cah-rah-BEE-anne, you’re headed to the mountainside resorts of St. Lucia. Planning on swimming and relaxing in the ocean? Head to Reduit Beach or Anse Chastanet. Want a little more adventure? Try zip lining through the Chassin region’s rainforest. It’s the dry season now, so it’ll be a little more expensive, but considering what the weather and food will be like, it’ll be worth it. So This Week… stop being stingy and just buy a new bottle of sunscreen. That last one expired in the twenty-teens.
Aquarius
You want to claim you’re an “oenophile”, do you? Well we’re shipping you off to Santorini, Greece! It’s a top honeymoon destination with breathtaking sunsets, whitewashed villages and colorful beaches. History buffs could check out Ancient Thira, then get your wine-tasting in while visiting central Santorini's wine tours. The best part of this whole vacation is… alfresco dinner at Amoudi Bay. So This Week… make sure you have lots of memory storage for your camera and a proper power adapter so you don’t blow it up this time.
Pisces
Have we got something special for you! Someone, and we’re not naming names, actually PAID for a Certain Somepony to get, and I QUOTE… “a naughty scope”. So Roxy? You’re getting sent to Negril, Jamaica to spend a week at Hedonism II! You’re booked in Mid-March for “Hedo Swing Breakers” with your choices of fun like: a Boozy Easter Egg Hunt, Truth or Dare Jenga, a Rave Igloo, Dinner on the Beach, or a Car Wash. That’s right! It’s a Clothing Optional all-adult resort hosting a huge lifestyle party for couples and throuples ages 19-45… OH, wait… You’ve already aged out of that bracket. Well, shoot. Uhm… You could just stay home and be nude all you want instead. It’s a lot cheaper too. Sorry. (That good enough, Kali? Oh, OOPS! Sorry!)
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know - or check out the Ko-Fi page ( https://ko-fi.com/icarusthelunarguard )! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Discord, and BLUESKY.
