The only thing that I got's been bothering me my whole life
Mister state trooper, please don't stop me

Radio relay towers gonna lead me to my baby
The radio's jammed up with talk show stations

232: Mississippi John Hurt // Today!
Tumblr media
Today! Mississippi John Hurt 1966, Vanguard
For good heart health, doctors prescribe Mississippi John Hurt, who can keep you going with the steady pulse of his picking and soothing storytelling even if your ticker’s been ripped out. Hurt’s of that generation of early blues guitarists who recorded a handful of sides in the 1920s, fell out of fashion, and were rediscovered by mid-century ethnomusicologists, with the decades between spent working jobs that involved like punching hogs or clearing obstructed industrial lawnmowers by hand. Hurt’s legendary 1928 sessions are regarded by most as his definitive statement, but I’ll throw in for 1966’s Today!, his third effort, which finds his brisk acoustic fingerpicking undiminished but his voice weathered and rounded by age in a way that suits his gentle, conversational style.
youtube
Hurt is my favourite country bluesman, and probably my favourite bluesman period, largely because his music is such a rich soup of folk, rag, jazz, and gospel sounds. At times it’s spooky (“Talkin’ Casey,” a piece that underscores Hurt’s connection to artists like John Fahey), at times it seems to suspend a mirage of American myth on the horizon (“Spike Driver Blues”), but mostly it offers comfort and the quiet joys of companionship, as on “Make Me a Pallet on the Floor” and “Beulah Land.” Hurt was a remarkable and innovative player, but the overall impression you get from his music is one of simplicity, and the immense grace true simplicity contains.

Nat Myers - Yellow Peril
The blues is alive and well, at least according to Kentuckian Nat Myers. Myers plays pre-World War II acoustic / delta blues akin to the late Robert Johnson, and he released his debut album, Yellow Peril, earlier in the summer with the help of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. With his record label, Easy Eye Sounds, he contacted Myers about possibly helping him write some songs and release a record, and he agreed, but they banged the album out in just a few days. Yellow Peril deals with Myers’ experiences during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, being that he is a Korean-American, especially living in the south. You hear Myers talk and you can immediately tell that he’s a Southern boy, because he’s got a deep voice with a southern accent, but his singing voice reflects that.
Yellow Peril is a fantastic album to boot, too; it doesn’t reinvent any kind of wheel, per se, but it has a great sound to it, especially for having a sound that’s over a century old. The blues have been around for a long time, and it’s such a timeless sound; I don’t have a lot to say about this record, since it’s around a half hour long, and it has a sound that’s quite straightforward. It’s an acoustic blues album, and the melodies and hooks are quite good, as well as his voice is very nice. This is one of those albums that has such a timeless sound to it, and it doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary, but it works for what it is. I’d say check this album out if you want a solid blues album that works well.
