ranking 1300+ music genres: PART 1
so, i have added enough images (162) that i can start ranking music and continuously add onto the near endless musical alphabet i have going on. this is the tierlist
feel free to "erm, akshually..." me, i know fuckall about most of these genres! im here to learn!
with that being said, lets start this, quite frankly, probably multi-year journey.
(learned how to add a read more tag so that you guys arent in scrolling hell.)
(1) Absolute Music
According to Wikipedia, Absolute Music is music that "is not explicitly about anything". Dawg that is so vague. Does something become Absolute Music if i can't pick a meaning out of it? What if the lyrics are distorted, in a language I don't understand, or not there at all?
I could not find anything to narrow down what this is on Spotify, I think people just add music to playlists called "Absolute Music" that they think is awesome or really touching. I'm sure real Absolute Music is neat, but unfortunately I could not find anything to concretely or even guess that I can call Absolute Music, so this is going in a new tier: "Too vague for me to rank/could not find any examples on Spotify"
Absolute Music song recs
none, because Read Above
(2) Abstract Hip Hop
I listened to this one in the previous unfinished series, but I will give it another listen. This also means I will give you new song recs! But do go check out my original set of song recs for this though. They're good.
Anyway, this feels like gen Z stoner music on my second listen. Make of that what you will. This music reminds me of what an old friend of mine would listen to often. He has made some dookie choices but listening to Abstract Hip Hop is one of the better choices he made.
That being said, I think I ranked Abstract Hip Hop too highly last time. Don't get me wrong, its good, but it did NOT need to be in the second tier from the top. Going in "Acceptable" tier.
Abstract Hip Hop song recs
(3) A'Capella
I don't have much to add to my previous review of A'Capella to be honest. Still impressive but also still not something I would regularly listen to, so its going in "Plausible".

I've been formulating my Dandy's World AU a little bit more and I finally have a name for it! Say hello to
Mundane Aftermath!
I'll have to get the energy to work on a proper presentation of it like other AUs out there, but is the first part of the details, which I'll put under a readmore so it doesn't flood the tags (THIS IS REALLY LONG, I RECOMMEND TO OPEN IT IN A NEW TAB IF YOU'RE USING DESKTOP/LAPTOP):
The designs I use to draw toons are how they look in the AU, both in the show and outside of it!
The AU is divided into two primary parts, Mundane Prelude and Mundane Aftermath. Prelude focuses on what happened in Gardenview from its inception to its closure, while Aftermath focuses on what happens decades later, which is when the ichor operation of canon!DW happens in this AU.
The main theme of this AU, as the title would suggest, is a certain mundane reasoning behind everything that happens in the story. Ichor in this setting doesn't have supernatural properties, nor was anyone working on the toons deliberately evil, and the downfall of Gardenview happened much more akin to how similar companies shut down IRL.
The worldbuilding surrounding toons and ichor is also a lot more, well, mundane, and less geared towards horror. The toons are definitely still little weird abominations, but they're their own persons, and in this AU, they are treated less like property and more like employees of Gardenview, and after the museum closes they have to set out into the real world and make lives of their own, just like their human coworkers.
There will definitely still be drama, action, and a little bit of horror, but my AU is much more oriented to a slice-of-life comedy. Most everyone in the AU will have a happy ending after a lot of suffering!
The following details lay the general setting and the three "main" characters in the Prelude section of the AU!
Gardenview Before the Toons:
In this AU, Gardenview started out as the Gardenview Chemical Research Center, a laboratory which specialized in the development of polymers (the chemicals that are the basis of plastics).
Gardenview has areas that are above ground, as well as several underground floors. They don't bore deep into the Earth, though, at most there's 10 floors, excluding undeground parking. This is due to the fact the laboratory was built to take as little space as possible above ground.
Unlike canon!Gardenview, the common areas and most offices of Gardenview are NOT underground. Before the toons, the lower floors of Gardenview had a select few offices, laboratories, computer server rooms and several storage areas.
A certain someone worked as one of the lead researchers among the staff...
Delilah Keen:
Before elaborating, I must preface that the designs that I made for both Delilah and Arthur were made before we had a confirmation of their canonical appearances. In this AU, Delilah is the older person, while Arthur is the younger one!
Delilah is a brilliant chemist with a penchant for developing inorganic chemicals that have bizarre properties.
Unlike what's implied of her canon counterpart, Delilah in this AU is NOT evil. She never worked on the toon project with the express purpose of trying to play god or anything of the sort, and she never abused the toons.
She is, however, very bad at giving out necessary warnings and reading between the lines of someone's true intentions. She is also not very emotive and typically speaks with a flat affect. Despite this, she's diligent and fundamentally a kind person.
She developed an odd, intergenerational friendship with Arthur after they both met at a local arts and crafts festival and interacted further through their city's usenet group.
Speaking of...
Arthur Walton:
Arthur is an animator turned director. The young man responsible for the creation of Dandy's World.
He worked as an animator in the late 80's, and got a lucky break when the pitch for DW was greenlit for (at the moment) only one season.
He's a bit naive and very emotional, but just like Delilah, his kindness is genuine and so is his optimism (and eventually, his will to make things right after it all goes to shit).
Even before the toons were brought to life, he loved each and everyone of the characters he created. Especially a certain rainbow flower.
One fateful day, his friend Delilah invited him to her workplace, wanting to show him something as a birthday gift.
Ichor:
Ichor in this AU is a liquid plastic made out of synthetic polymers. In its natural state it's an almost-black dark brown thick liquid (think of the consistency of honey or really thick ink). It's safe for handling for humans (as it has similar properties to PET plastic), and technically safe for toons to handle (though for them lab equipment is extremely recommended).
Its most outstanding feature is not the fact its a liquid at room temperature, but the fact that it has the unexplained quality of creating synthetic life.
How did Delilah discover this? IDK, she just did, don't think too hard about it (it's funnier that way).
Can only cause the iconic infection when an extremely large amount of raw ichor enters a toon's body via a wound/excessive ingestion.
Despite its life-creating properties (with the right equipment), ichor didn't have a lot of other practical uses, so when Gardenview closed down most of it just sat in storage tanks abandoned.
The Printer:
Delilah also has plenty of engineering knowledge, and created the Printer, a device about two-three times as large as the typical office copy machine.
The Printer takes three inputs (apart from the obvious which is electrical power): Ichor, VHS (and later on, also DVD) recordings of the Dandy's World show, and copious amounts of reference sheets that Arthur has created of the show's cast.
The output? At the start, only a few inanimate objects. But Delilah wanted the Printer to reach its intended production. What was that? Toons, obviously!
Although the Printer was operational by the time Delilah showcased it to Arthur, they still spent a few months adjusting both it and the input materials as making life wasn't quite as easy as both of them thought.
One fateful attempt, though, the Printer finally spitted out a certain someone...
Dandy:
The first toon to ever be printed into life. Both in canon and in this AU. However, in this AU, he was born sometime in the very early 90's.
Just a little guy! Just a little dude! The shortest of all the non-pet toons, standing at around 101cm/3.3ft.
Definitely an adult, even when he just got printed. However, at the very start he was very sweet and innocent, since his only memories at that point were the events of the show's first season.
Doesn't technically have a canon voice in this AU, but I really like to imagine he sounds a lot like Dana Synder's role as either Scratch (from The Ghost and Molly McGee) or Master Shake (from Aqua Teen Hunger Force). It's just funny, okay?
Dandy in this AU came out... a little wonky. Instead of always having his cute looks, his default facial features make him look like some cranky old man. This is due to the fact that, in their frustration trying to make the Printer work, Arthur accidentally messed up the reference art for his face, and Delilah lacked the eye for illustration to notice the mistake before feeding the information to the printer.
Delilah offered to "decommission" Dandy and redo the process, but Arthur refused since, despite the flaws, holy shit Delilah, that's his son you're suggesting to kill! His baby boy! Plus, literally everything else about Dandy was like it should be, appearance and personality wise.
Dandy eventually learned to scrunch up his face to actually look like his show counterpart, and his real face ended up being a sort of secret among key staff of Gardenview.
Dandy was surprisingly chill about the prospect of suddenly "waking up" in some mysterious facility filled with strange, giant creatures. Arthur and Delilah told him the lie of being in a hospital for a rare, paralyitic illness he somehow catched, which is how they managed to wave away his facial features. Years later, he also took the truth about being a fictional character brought to life surprisingly well.
Okay that's enough yapping for now, if you have any questions about what I've been laying out so far send a reply to this post! I'll yap more and the next parts describing this whole AU will come out Soon (TM).

I want one of those scenes in a dude bro film where “tomboy” chick has to wear a dress to go undercover or whatever, but instead of the guys drooling as she walks down the stairs, they’re like “k. U need to stop. Go put the cargo pants back on. You look super uncomfortable and awkward in that. Brutus, you go be the fake prostitute.”

theres bikes around the city you can rent but you have to use an app that needs your drivers license. theres buses that drive right to your destination, but if you dont have change you need the app. you can wash your car here if you sign into the app. you can go to the bathroom here you just have to unlock it with the app that needs your location on. you can order at this restaurant if you scan the code and download the app. im losing my freaking mind

ive labelled all the A genres... my music rating hiatus may be longer than i thought.
tiermaker makes you post your tierlist after adding 500 items before you can add more though, so once i reach 500 genres (currently at 88) i will start rating music again.
fellas... i am thinking of revamping the ranking 550+ music genres series. im learning that there are so many genres this tiermaker has missed. i will briefly go back and listen to genres that i didnt really give an accurate listen to, as well as bump in some new ones that were not on the list before. the genres i have already ranked probably wont move around too much. im making my own tiermaker for this. stay tuned.
i do have a post queued up to post about an hour from now, but after that it may be a few days before the next post as i build the tiermaker and get everything sorted.
perhaps i will even post the tiermaker here if anyone else wants to take up such a diabolically long endeavor.
i better not miss any fucking genres this time! i will explode if i do

hopefully these sources cover everything:
(and the remaining parts)
youtube
(and parts 3 and 4)
there are a couple genres, namely 8-bit, 16-bit, and 2 tone that are not mentioned in either of these as far as i can tell, so the tiermaker i have been using will also be a source as well still.

ranking 550+ music genres: PART 9
oh god i forgot alt rock was a thing.
(25) Alternative Rock
Tumblr media
This is where I'm getting tomato'd probably... this shit mid. And guess what, this is another genre that happens to place a lot of importance in lyrics, at least as far as I can tell. This is what all the kids are bumpin these dayz. Mid mid mid. It is a little bit interesting that this is a genre that both plenty of straights and plenty of gays listen to regularly. I think the joining factor has to be self loathing. I have depression too but not like This.
This is going in "No, I don't think I will" because I don't care anymore and I don't care to hear more of this. Goodbye.
Alternative Rock song rec
(26) Ambient House
yippee yippee yippee yippeee
Aphex Twin Time
Bump ts while I'm sorting through our disaster of a soda cooler at work. This music is colorful and curious and blobby. Unlike the previous genre this sparks a sense of wonder. Everything is squiggly and at peace. This is a pretty recent genre I've taken a liking to. I can ignore the world and retreat into my mind. So much creative potential.
To be honest, I haven't really dove deep into this genre, I have mostly been on the outskirts. But I am more than willing to dive deeper. Almost every song is intriguing and interesting to me. I can picture a variety of different shapes for each song. This genre is also weirdly nostalgic, despite having never been familiar with ambient house as a kid. This is good music to study to but also good music to just listen to on its own I think. Each song is a new, entirely foreign and conceptual environment to explore.
I can virtually guarantee a vast majority of people would put alt rock above ambient house. Maybe one of you will enjoy my takes.
My friends and enemies, this is our second "🗣️️‍🔥️‍🔥".
Ambient House song recs
(27) Ambient
Now, this is a genre that I used to listen to a lot since I used to write and draw a hell of a lot more. [Post-writing-this-post-edit: it wasn't ambient but dark ambient, usually].
The "ambient" I'm finding on spotify is a little more... socially acceptable than the ambient I used to listen to? As in, there's a little more substance to these songs than the hours of droning and occasional other song elements that would interrupt that I was accustomed to. Like I was on that "2 Hours of Dark Ambient Music Compilation" on youtube type shit (now that I'm listening to ambient vs dark ambient, what I just described is closer to dark ambient than ambient).
Obviously, somber movie scene type shit. It's simple in composition usually but leaves you with a lot to think about. The world is large and you will never know everything but you can learn a lot in one lifetime. Go learn things. It's ok to make mistakes. That's something I need to drill into my head. Make sure your loved ones know how much you appreciate them. Time is fickle. Do something nice for someone this week. You are more than you can ever know. Be at peace brotha.
This is going in "In the right time and place, fuck yeah" because sometimes you need this type of shit, idk. But this is not something I would listen to regularly or throw on the aux, ykwim?
Ambient song recs
hmmm... the current tierlist perhaps. if youre pissy about my opinions you can garbage react me or something idk

ranking 550+ music genres: PART 8
oh dear. alt metal and alt pop are up next... hang onto your tomatoes!
(22) Alternative Metal
I used to listen to a fair chunk of alt metal, but I've since become less prone to metal and rock in general. That being said, alternative metal still holds up to some extent. Also, I listened to Deftones for the first time today. I think I can understand the hype.
I can't promise any new, niche alt metal recs unfortunately; this series doesn't really get into the meat and potatoes of it usually unless I'm particularly knowledgeable about a genre. Shoutout to my younger cousin for the third song rec though. Her music taste ain't too shabby.
I was never a diehard fan of any particular alt metal band but I did listen to a fair bit of Three Days Grace pre-covid. I've de-edgified since then, so less "angry" sounding music lands on my radar nowadays. God I feel like Le Boomer writing that (?????)
Only three alt metal song recs because I'm far from an expert on it and I'm sure theres many-a-blog or youtube video you can go pull more from where that person or people are more passionate. Alternative Metal is going in "Pretty good".
Alternative Metal song recs
(23) Alternative Pop
I'm not sure there's anything new or interesting I can add to such a widely listened to genre. Something something brat summer yeaaah
Pop is a genre with a heavy, heavy focus on lyrics, and y'all already know how I feel about lyrics. Unless they're singing about something particularly heinous I don't have a shit to give for what the lyrics say.
"Plausible". Yeppp throw your tomatoes now or forever hold your peace fellas. The hits are pretty good but the misses are near unbearable sometimes. PinkPanthress would have Saved but apparently her music is considered bedroom pop, take ts up with spotify brotha.
Alternative Pop song rec
(24) Alternative R&B
I hope this is a less heated genre for people than the previous two.
Ohhh I see Thundercat. Immediate Boost. Spicy try not to judge every genre based on an artist he already fucking knows challenge (impossible)!!! I promise you guys I am listening to new artists and new songs, but I can't help preconceived notions.
Ugh ts so chill mane. Expensive coffee at a bougie coffee place in the evening type shit. Sparkling lights, no pressing commitments. Not a worry in the world. Also lowkey smoking a blunt with an interesting fella on the rooftop of a building type shit (I'm asexual and likely demiromantic, but if youre not either then they can be a hottie I guess). Ngl this is a genre I can confidently call various deep shades of dark purple and fuchsia.
"Incredible. I FW this heavy". Now I need to go find someone interesting to sit on a roof and smoke a blunt with.
Alternative R&B song recs
extra post today, as a treat for posting jack shit for like two weeks.

ranking 550+ music genres: PART 7
we had our christmas today, put together a new desk chair and im feeling pretty happy :)
(19) Alpen Rock
I have never heard of this before, so going into it, I had no expectations. Coincidentally, I have recently started learning German, and unless I'm dumb (which is entirely possible) this seems to be a German, or at least Germanic, genre. Once again I am pleasantly surprised by a rock genre (can you tell I hear too much overplayed, socially acceptable rock in public yet?). Overall, I am hearing light-hearted music fit for a road trip (at least it sounds light-hearted, once again I am not fluent in German, so for all I know they could be singing about something really depressing and putting an upbeat tune over it like is the case with a lot of Spanish music I've heard).
Since this is one of the first genres that is predominantly not in English on this journey, I should mention I am not a lyrics guy. Lyrics are just another instrument to my ears. That being said, I like listening to music that isn't in English because its easier to concentrate on other tasks and I like experiencing bits of cultures that are not my own. Once I become fluent in more than one language the lyrics being easy to meld with the rest of the song might change, but as it stands now, throw on some non-English music on the aux brotha.
Something is telling me to put this genre in "Pretty freaking awesome", so there it will be for now.
One more thing before I move onto genre 20, if any of you reading this have any experience with these genres I'm less familiar with, I would love to hear about it!
Also, I love accordions. Very nostalgic and happy as someone who grew up hearing an assortment of hispanic genres of music at family gatherings and barbecues on my dad's side.
Alpen Rock song recs
(20) Alternative Country
I have a sin to confess, I had a country phase back in like 2023. And it wasn't "good country" Johnny Cash ahh shit either, it was HIXTAPE and other equally braindead music. Please save your throwing tomatoes for any worse information that may come up (but I can't exactly prevent you from throwing them now).
Having listened to a few songs, I would describe this as Country Lite. You could probably wedge one of these songs into someones Easy Listening or Alt Rock or Soft Rock playlist and they might not be the wiser. I had to go check the tiermaker to make sure I wasn't going to be subjected to any Stomp and Holler, and thankfully that did not make the list explicitly, but this shit is pretty damn close. Can you tell I am not exactly fond? This is white people force me to participate in campfire karaoke type shit. I ain't doing that shit again (I was forced to participate in white people campfire karaoke a couple years back when visiting my partner's step grandpa and family across the country. I reluctantly muttered the lyrics to Freebird with all eyes on me and pibbed out the rest of the time. Not enough liquid courage in me I suppose).
Sorry fellas, this is our first "No, I don't think I will", and also the lowest genre yet.
Alternative Country song rec (AKA the singular one that was kind of ok that I heard).
(21) Alternative Dance
Chat are we back? Hell yeah brother
Immediately clocked some TR/ST songs on the first playlist I clicked on. Hell yeah. TR/ST is awesome on the za, but also perfectly fine sober as well. Of course, the main purpose of this project is for me to branch out musically, so I will be listening to a variety of artists and songs. But you will not escape the TR/ST song suggestion. It's right there.
I'm seeing a fair bit of what I would (naïvely?) consider darkwave or goth-esque. Shoutout to my nonbinary friend irl for unintentionally getting me into this shit. The queers always have something interesting in their liked songs (I say, as yet another queer. Hopefully all you alphabet soup fellas can find enticing a song that I suggest).
Figure I might as well address why I keep switching from past to present-tense, if anyone cares about that. It's because most of the time I am writing this live as I listen to the genres, but I cant guarantee flawless grammar because I might write something up two hours later or something.
I feel like everyone's heard New Order - Blue Monday, so that won't be linked here but that's like, the most stereotypical song I can think of for this category of music, and it's pretty good.
The last song suggestion is a little breakbeat-esque, but I suppose it still fits. Anyway, easy "Incredible. I FW this heavy" tier.
Alternative Dance song recs
