The Comprehensive Guide to Oral Health: Insights from a Toronto Dental Clinic
Oral health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked. Many people only visit the dentist in Toronto when they experience pain or discomfort, but regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene can prevent many issues before they become severe. At our Toronto dental clinic, we believe in educating our patients about the importance of oral health and providing comprehensive care to ensure their smiles stay bright and healthy.
The Importance of Regular Dental Check-Ups
Regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining good oral health. These visits allow dentists to identify and treat potential problems early, before they escalate into more serious conditions. During a routine check-up, your dentist will:
Examine your teeth and gums: This includes checking for signs of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
Perform professional cleaning: Removing plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing might miss.
Evaluate your bite and jaw alignment: Ensuring your teeth align properly and identifying any issues with your jaw.
Screen for oral cancer: Early detection is crucial for effective treatment.
Skipping regular dental visits can lead to the progression of minor issues into major health problems, potentially requiring more extensive and costly treatments.
Preventative Care: The Key to a Healthy Smile
Preventative care is the cornerstone of maintaining excellent oral health. Here are some tips to keep your teeth and gums in top condition:
Brush twice a day: Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush for at least two minutes, ensuring you clean all surfaces of your teeth.
Floss daily: Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the gumline, areas your toothbrush can't reach.
Use mouthwash: An antimicrobial mouthwash can help reduce bacteria and freshen your breath.
Eat a balanced diet: Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay and erosion.
Avoid tobacco: Smoking and chewing tobacco can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer.
Understanding Common Dental Issues
Even with diligent care, dental issues can still arise. Understanding common problems can help you recognize symptoms early and seek treatment promptly.
Cavities: Also known as dental caries, cavities are caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that produces acids. These acids erode the enamel and create holes in the teeth.
Gum Disease: Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums caused by plaque. Early-stage gum disease, known as gingivitis, can cause redness, swelling, and bleeding. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, leading to tooth loss.
Tooth Sensitivity: Sensitive teeth can result from worn enamel, exposed roots, or cavities. This condition causes discomfort when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks.
Tooth Erosion: Tooth erosion occurs when acids wear away the enamel. This can be caused by consuming acidic foods and drinks, acid reflux, or certain medical conditions.
Oral Cancer: Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, and throat. Regular dental check-ups include screening for signs of oral cancer.
Advanced Dental Treatments
Our Toronto dental clinic offers a range of advanced treatments to address various dental issues and enhance your smile:
Dental Implants: Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. They consist of a titanium post that is surgically placed in the jawbone, topped with a custom-made crown.
Invisalign: Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional braces. These clear, removable aligners gradually straighten your teeth without the need for metal brackets and wires.
Teeth Whitening: Professional teeth whitening can significantly brighten your smile. We offer in-office treatments and take-home kits to suit your preferences.
Veneers: Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the front surface of your teeth, improving their appearance. They can address issues like discoloration, chips, and gaps.
Root Canal Therapy: Root canal therapy is necessary when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This procedure removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection.
The Role of Technology in Modern Dentistry
Advancements in dental technology have revolutionized the way we diagnose and treat oral health issues. Our Toronto dental clinic utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to provide the best possible care for our patients:
Digital X-Rays: Digital X-rays produce detailed images with less radiation exposure compared to traditional X-rays. They help us identify issues that are not visible during a standard examination.
Intraoral Cameras: Intraoral cameras allow us to take high-resolution images of your teeth and gums. These images help us explain your treatment options and show you areas of concern.
Laser Dentistry: Dental lasers can be used for a variety of procedures, including gum reshaping, cavity detection, and treating gum disease. They are often less invasive and promote faster healing.
CAD/CAM Technology: Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology allows us to create precise restorations, such as crowns and veneers, in a single visit.
Patient-Centered Care
At our Toronto dental clinic, we prioritize patient comfort and satisfaction. We understand that dental visits can be anxiety-inducing for some, and we strive to create a welcoming and relaxing environment. Our team is dedicated to providing compassionate care and personalized treatment plans tailored to your unique needs.

Discover the Benefits of Acupuncture Therapy and the Best Acupuncture Clinic in Toronto
Tumblr media
In today's fast-paced world, stress, chronic pain, and various health issues have become common challenges that many individuals face. While modern medicine offers effective solutions, some people seek alternative therapies to complement their treatment or find relief where traditional methods fall short. One such alternative therapy gaining popularity is acupuncture. In this blog, we will delve into the reasons why you should consider acupuncture therapy and introduce you to the best acupuncture clinic in Toronto.
Understanding Acupuncture Therapy
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. These points, known as acupuncture points or acupoints, are believed to be interconnected pathways that allow the flow of energy, known as Qi (pronounced "chee"). By stimulating these points, acupuncturists aim to restore the balance of Qi and promote the body's natural healing process.
Benefits of Acupuncture Therapy
Pain Management: One of the most well-known benefits of acupuncture is its effectiveness in managing pain. Whether it's chronic back pain, migraines, arthritis, or menstrual cramps, acupuncture has been shown to provide relief by releasing endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and reducing inflammation.
Stress Reduction: In today's hectic lifestyle, stress has become a common companion for many. Acupuncture can help alleviate stress by promoting relaxation, reducing anxiety levels, and improving overall mental well-being. The calming effect of acupuncture can also improve sleep quality, which is essential for overall health and vitality.
Boosting Immune Function: Acupuncture has been found to enhance the immune system's response by stimulating the production of white blood cells. This can help the body fight off infections more effectively and reduce the frequency of illnesses.
Improved Digestive Health: Digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, and bloating can significantly impact one's quality of life. Acupuncture can help regulate digestive function by reducing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, improving gut motility, and restoring the balance of gut bacteria.
Enhanced Mental Clarity and Focus: Many people report improved mental clarity, concentration, and cognitive function after acupuncture sessions. By promoting better blood circulation to the brain and releasing tension in the muscles, acupuncture can help clear the mind and sharpen focus.
Holistic Approach to Healing: Unlike some conventional treatments that target specific symptoms or organs, acupuncture takes a holistic approach to healing. It addresses the root cause of the problem by restoring balance and harmony to the body as a whole, rather than just treating the symptoms.

What is the Best Natural Treatment for GERD Toronto
GERD or gastroesophageal reflux is a chronic condition that causes uncomfortable symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion. Most rely on reflux medication and antacids to find relief but these are temporary and cannot offer the long-term support that you need. Some types of stronger prescription medications may also cause side effects that are difficult to control. But when you work with a naturopathic doctor, they introduce alternative or natural remedies that are kind to the body. Most importantly, the remedies they introduce offer lasting relief without harsh effects.
To help you find a natural treatment for GERD Toronto naturopaths offers the following tips to assist with relief.
Monitor What You Eat
By monitoring what you eat every day you can determine which foods are acting as triggers. For some, there are certain types of foods that lead to irritations of the gastrointestinal tract that cause acidity, reflux, bloating, and cramps. The first step that you can take is to create a food journal. This journal should include documentation of each type of food that you consume through the course of the day. This way, you can look back at the items on your menu and take note of when your symptoms started. Through a process of elimination, it helps you to control foods responsible for discomfort.
Get Enough Sleep
A lack of proper rest can have a profound impact on your health. Poor sleep increases stress and disrupts normal hormonal function in the body. It can also affect healthy digestion making it harder to process food which leads to the symptoms of bloat and abdominal discomfort. By ensuring that you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep and that you properly manage chronic stress, you can find relief from a multitude of abdominal symptoms.
Structure Your Meals
It is better to have small portions or meals spaced out across the day. If you are consuming large meals, it can be harder to digest placing strain on the abdominal system. Consider the types of food consumed and break these into smaller meals or portions to determine whether there is an improvement in your symptoms and digestive health.
Wear the Right Fitting Clothing
Many people may not connect the type of clothes that you wear to the experience of debilitating digestive symptoms. Wearing tight clothing such as button-up pants can make it harder to digest food because of the pressure placed on this area of the body. Try relieving this pressure by wearing clothes that are fitted yet lightweight or that allow you to move around and breathe with ease rather than have the discomfort cause stress and strain on the digestive system.
Speak to a Professional Naturopath
The only way to achieve long-lasting results and the best forms of relief is when you consult with a certified naturopath. With a gastrointestinal specialist, natural remedies and measures are suggested that you can try to relieve discomfort and feelings of poor digestion. Naturopaths use alternative therapy so they will create a wellness plan that you can rely on to find long term relief.
By working with you, they will break down the steps that you can take to manage digestive problems. With natural treatment for GERD Toronto, it is easier to work towards improvement and stress management. You will not be concerned about costly prescriptions and the side effects that some medications might have on your body. Natural remedies are gentle and with the aid of a naturopath, these measures are fully customized to address your specific health and wellness. It is possible to find relief from digestive problems that cause uncomfortable symptoms and compromise the quality of life.

Tumblr media
Acupuncture for Digestive Issues:-
Acupuncture for digestive issues is the process that once the food is swallowed, digestion begins in the mouth. Food is broken down and prepared for passage through the digestive (gastrointestinal) tract by chewing and saliva. Peristalsis sends food further downhill into the stomach as it passes through the throat and esophagus. The stomach produces acid to break down food, begin nutritional absorption, and prepare the food for passage to the small and large intestines. Because nutrients are extracted and by-products are transported to the large intestines for faces, absorption occurs largely in the small intestine.
The liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are accessory organs that serve a supplementary function in digesting. Bile is secreted by the liver, which aids in the breakdown of lipids (fats) and the detoxification of toxins. By storing and secreting bile as needed, the gallbladder collaborates with the liver. The pancreatic is a muscle that generates digestive enzymes and regulates blood sugar.

An Integrative Functional Medicine Approach to Acid Reflux
Tumblr media
Acid reflux may be quite painful at times, yet it may also go unnoticed at other times. The symptoms' on-again, off-again character is always an indication of a problem that has to be addressed. In the United States, over-the-counter 24-hour antacid tablets were the seventh most often prescribed drug in 2019. Because it is also accessible over the counter, many more people are taking it than we know about. Acid reflux is a major concern in the United States. There's also an issue with the medicines that are used to manage it. You may be familiar with over-the-counter brands such as Prilosec OTC, OmePPi, and Zegerid. Omeprazole comes in a variety of forms.
Omeprazole belongs to a family of pharmaceuticals known as proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, which includes a variety of different treatments. These medicinens, as the name indicates, block a mechanism that dramatically reduces stomach acid production. In principle, this sounds fantastic to patients, but in practice, we observe that acid suppression causes serious complications such as osteoporosis, Vitamin B12 insufficiency, renal illness, an increased risk of dementia, and circulation disorders.
To avoid a rebound impact of acid production (pain! ), stopping a PPI needs patience and a careful weaning procedure. This is something that an integrative functional medicine practitioner or a health coach may assist you with.
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows into the esophagus, as the term indicates. The stomach lining, unlike the esophagus, is adapted to withstand the acidity of hydrochloric acid (stomach acid). As a result, it produces discomfort or, in lower doses, irritation or increased mucus production, resulting in a dry cough or frequent cleaning of the throat.
Low stomach acid output is the most prevalent cause of acid reflux.
The following are some of the most common reasons of low stomach acid:
The most frequent cause is magnesium insufficiency. The majority of us do not consume enough magnesium.
high cortisol from stress- when a person is in a "fight or flight" condition, stomach acid drops by 80-90 percent.
a lack of eating hygiene - most individuals eat too quickly or under stressful circumstances.
Infection with H Pylori is caused by an excess of a bacterium present in the stomach.
hypothyroid
It is impossible to overestimate the value of having enough stomach acid. Maintaining a proper pH balance is essential for our bodies to break down protein and generate amino acids, absorb vitamins and minerals from diet, and promote the growth of our key gut flora.
Paying attention to how you eat is one of the most functional methods to lessen or manage acid reflux concerns. Sit down for a meal, take a deep breath, and relax for a minute before beginning to eat, then enjoy your meal while chewing, chewing, chewing. This may appear to be a simple concept, yet it is really crucial and practical. And it will take some time to get used to, so start with your next meal!
Speak with an integrative functional medicine practitioner to get to the source of your acid reflux once and for all. You don't have to be as self-assured as Proud Mary. You are not obligated to continue burning.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Tumblr media
Naturopathic nutraceutical is dedicated to recognizing the root causes of persistent disease and then making use of a customized medicine technique to intervene as well as turn around these underlying sources of condition, returning a patient to a state of wellness. The ultimate goal is to return a patient to a fully functioning, medicine cost-free, wellness state. This technique may be made use of to target importantly any kind of persistent clinical problem. Traditionally educated MDs who have adopted this approach and technique this approach have produced the names Practical Nutraceutical, or "Anti-Aging" Medicine.
How is Naturopathic Nutraceutical Different from Traditional/ "Allopathic" Medicine? Traditional nutraceutical is focused on acute illness, injury, subduing the signs and symptoms of chronic ailment, or heroic end-of-life interventions utilizing a disease-based version: you either have the "illness" and are taken with, or you do not meet all the standards and also are ignored or placated with therapy of signs and symptoms, (i.e., taking an antidepressant for PMS or Advil for joint discomfort, or an acid-blocker for indigestion, or a cholesterol tablet, or a blood-pressure tablet). Yet, you may still feel unwell, you need assistance as well as you do not want to take nutraceuticals forever to treat symptoms. Therapy is customized based on particular useful imbalances discovered using this strategy. Drugs might coincide in many cases as those made use of by traditional doctors, but commonly medicines are compounded or made just for the private person. In addition, dietary supplements, dietary IVs, various other all-natural substances, diet plan, physical fitness regimens, and bioidentical hormones might be used to return the client to a state of health and wellness.

5 Cast Iron Reasons to Visit a Naturopath
Tumblr media
As a practicing Naturopath I often hear from my patients about their health concerns and worries. It is very evident that as we get older, we start to feel more vulnerable about our health and our mortality. As the veneer of youth wanes, aches and pains start to become more frequent, and we start to wonder just what might or might not be happening in our bodies that is unseen and unknown but could have potentially negative consequences for our long term health, wellbeing and vitality.
This is something I personally observed as a young girl with my grandparents. One of my grandmother’s became disabled through illness and the other died in her early 60’s from complications of type 2 diabetes. I witnessed the devastation caused to my grandfather who’s own health rapidly declined and he died of a broken heart.  Intuitively I knew that my grandparents health could have been managed better, that they didn’t need to suffer so much and they were robbed of years of enjoying being grandparents.
My studies to attain a degree in Health Science, have taught me that by seeking the guidance of health professionals such as Naturopaths many of the chronic diseases associated with ageing are avoidable.  However, I have found that many people are unaware of the benefits of working with a Naturopath, so here are my top 5 reasons for visiting one.
1.     Naturopathy works!
Naturopathy encompasses a multitude of natural therapies including nutrition, herbalism, massage, energetic medicine plus many more.  There are literally 1,000s of scientific studies supporting the therapeutic benefit of these therapies for a vast array of conditions.  For example, the science tells us that there are many different nutrient deficiencies that can lead to chronic inflammation, the number one cause of chronic disease. A Naturopath can help to uncover and treat any nutritional deficiencies either through food or supplementation.
2.     Naturopathy addresses the cause of symptoms
Whilst a Naturopath can help you to manage any uncomfortable symptoms, the ultimate goal is to treat the cause.  The cause is often a complex interaction of genetics, environment and diet.
For example, stress and anxiety can be caused by genetics, your environmental exposures, diet, lifestyle or other factors. A Naturopath will help identify the real cause of your stress and anxiety and work with you to remediate this and increase your resilience.
3.     Positive Side Effects!
We all know that pharmaceutical medications may help with symptomatic management, but they come with a long list of unwanted side effects and may increase the risk of other disease states.  However, the right natural medicine for you can come with a long list of positive side effects and avoidance of future disease states!
For example, proton pump inhibitors (e.g. omeprazole) are one of the most commonly prescribed medications and are used to treat symptoms of acid reflux.  PPIs are associated with increased risk of bone fractures, community-acquired pneumonia, clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea, SLE, B12 deficiency, magnesium deficiency and kidney disease.  Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhoea (Drugs.com).
A Naturopath will seek to understand the cause of reflux, this may be due to a nutrient deficiency, for example zinc (please note there may be many causes of reflux which should be explored thoroughly with your health professional in order to treat appropriately).  If you have a zinc deficiency, then taking a zinc supplement will not only improve your reflux but will also aid skin health, immune health, hormonal health and mental health, to name a few.  In fact, zinc is a co-factor for more than 300 enzymes and proteins that keep us healthy (Osieki).
4.     You can take control of your health
A naturopath will help you understand your health and give you the tools to take control.  So as we get older and start to feel more vulnerable about our health and wellbeing, and worry about what might be lurking inside of us, a naturopath will provide you with the know-how to optimise your health and your environment so that there is less likelihood of you becoming victim to chronic diseases associated with ageing.
5.     It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
The knowledge and tools you will gain from visiting a Naturopath may benefit you now and well into the future.  For example, the zinc deficiency in the above acid reflux example may also be affecting other areas of your health, albeit at an almost imperceptible level, such as catching an extra cold this year or wounds healing slower than usual.  These are all a barometer of our health and what is going on inside our bodies. In other words they are not normal and simply to be dismissed. Visiting a Naturopath can help you to understand the signs of health and well-being so you can take action before you experience more significant health issues in the longer term.

What are the Symptoms of Muscle Tension Dysphonia and What Are The Treatments Available for That Voice Disorder?
The term Muscle Tension Dysphonia is a general term which could be associated with an imbalance in the muscle’s coordination and breathing patterns required to create a voice. Muscle Tension Dysphonia (often called MTD) may occur on its own, or as a result of a strained voice being pulled into the neck muscles. The reason behind this disorder is not always clear. It may be triggered by allergies, illness, acid reflux or whichever other means...
Symptoms
The most common symptoms for this disorder is a change in voice quality, often associated with discomfort of the vocal cords (or voice box) while speaking or singing. Also, almost always, symptoms like hoarseness and rapines will be associated with an increased effort to talk or sing, coupled with subsequent fatigue during continuous voice use.
Treatment
There is an alternative form of voice therapy which is the gold standard for the treatment of Muscle Tension Dysphonia. There are no other known treatments (outside of the Vocal Science™ Method and Technique) that can restore the muscle balance in the vocal mechanism. With that said, this unique form of therapy will help alleviate the above vocal symptoms.
If you are suffering from any vocal disorders like MTD or any other ones like Vocal Paralysis (Paresis), vocal cord nodules, polyps, cysts, lesions, or what have you, The Royans Institute for Non-Surgical Voice Repair can help you with virtually any voice problems in Toronto, Ontario and even worldwide. No matter what your voice/vocal problem(s) are, they can solve it with their revolutionary vocal technique, and specially designed speech and singing exercises (when needed) to help you recover and regain your healthy voice!

How to Manage Acid Reflux Treatment Toronto
Feeling a burning sensation in your throat or moving up towards your chest, could be a sign of acid reflux and heartburn. Acid reflux occurs when the stomach acid moves upwards rather than remaining in the stomach. It causes significant discomfort and irritation of the soft tissue. If you experience these sensations a few times a week, you could be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
You may have tried over-the-counter medication or home remedies to relieve symptoms with little to no success. With naturopathic acid reflux treatment Toronto clients can receive the gentle and safe support needed to overcome the effects of GERD.
Tumblr media
Why Naturopathy for Acid Reflux
Naturopathic medicine focuses on alleviating symptoms, addressing the underlying causes, and restoring the balanced, healthy condition of the esophageal and stomach membranes. This is achieved with lifestyle changes and the introduction of natural medicine. The goal of therapy is to reduce reliance on harsh prescription medication and to restore internal balance.
Naturopathy is a recommended treatment of acid reflux because it provides supportive care and addresses the source of the problem. Clients receive a comprehensive assessment and professional recommendations from a qualified naturopath. Naturopathy is an alternative medicinal practice focused on holistic treatment for a variety of chronic conditions. As acid reflux is responsible for major discomfort and limitations on general function, it remains a trusted and a recommended treatment for the restoration of health and balance.
Acid reflux can be treated with supportive care and lifestyle improvements. The purpose of therapy is to restore balance in the gut and to prevent the occurrence of reflux. Therapy also focuses on decreasing the use of conventional antacids and heartburn medication. This is owed to the long-term adverse effects these medicines have on physical health.
How Naturopathy Helps Relieve Acid Reflux
Simple steps including exercises to aid digestion and the introduction of a balanced diet are part of naturopathy. An anti-inflammatory diet is introduced to prevent persistent irritation and the buildup of acidity which causes reflux. With the assistance of your naturopathic doctor, an individualized treatment plan is created based on the severity of your symptoms.
To experience relief from acid reflux, seek treatment from your trusted naturopathic doctor in Toronto. You can achieve healing and balance from acid reflux, the natural way. NATUROPATHIC FAQ
Tumblr media
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST VISIT WITH A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR?
You should expect a lengthy dialogue with your doctor – not with a nurse, not with the receptionist, not with a lab technician. Most importantly, you should expect a follow-up visit once your doctor has evaluated your history, your concerns, your current health status and any lab tests the doctor has ordered. Listening to and understanding the individual patient is the fundamental basis of naturopathic medicine. This approach allows for individualized treatment, rather than a cookie-cutter approach to patient care.
HOW WILL A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR TREAT (INSERT CONDITION HERE)?
Naturopathic doctors do not treat conditions, they treat people. For example, a naturopathic doctor is less likely to prescribe a drug to treat gastric reflux than they are to analyze diet choices and eating patterns, suggest digestive bitters to normalize acid production, and/or prescribe demulcent herbs to soothe esophageal irritation. Rather than simply prescribing a pain reliever for chronic headache, a naturopath will work with the patient to determine the root cause of the headaches, whether it is dehydration, low blood sugar, muscular tension, stress, chemical sensitivities or even meningitis.
A naturopathic doctor will be less likely to treat any single, acute condition than they are to make your whole body healthier so that it can fight off infection and build the strength to heal itself. A naturopathic doctor also has more options than medical doctors for chronic conditions such as fatigue, heartburn or insomnia. Finally, naturopathic doctors have longer office visits than medical doctors, typically 45 to 60 minutes each. This allows enough time for you and your naturopathic doctor to work through any questions or concerns together.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE TREAT?
Because of the naturopathic doctor’s approach of treating the person, not the illness, there are very few illnesses or conditions that naturopathic medicine cannot alleviate. Naturopathic medicine may be a great adjunct to more conventional medicine for ailments that might otherwise be considered outside the naturopathic doctor’s scope.
Certain conditions and ailments, however, have been shown to be particularly receptive to naturopathic care. Some, but certainly not all, of these are gastrointestinal disorders, environmental and food allergies, chronic sinusitis, asthma, skin conditions, obesity, blood sugar disorders, painful or heavy menstrual periods, migraines, fatigue, infertility, mood disorders, PMS, menopause, chronic heartburn and insomnia.
WHAT SORT OF TREATMENTS WILL A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR PRESCRIBE?
Naturopathic doctors may prescribe things like botanical medication, vitamin and mineral supplements, exercise, dietary adjustments, aids for coping with stress and other lifestyle changes designed to help strengthen your body’s immune system and health. Much time will be spent on education – about your condition, how to make you feel better, and things you can do to improve your health without conventional medication. However, naturopathic doctors may also prescribe more conventional treatments such as antibiotics, thyroid medication, hormones, birth control medications, antidepressants, or blood pressure medication, depending on your unique situation. Your naturopathic doctor will also carefully integrate your care with any existing prescriptions or treatments your conventional doctor has chosen for you.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A “NATUROPATH” AND A “NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR”?
Yes, although the differences can be confusing. The term “Naturopathic Doctor” can only be used by licensed medical practitioners who have attended an approved naturopathic medical school and practice in a licensed state. In an unlicensed state, both terms can be freely used by anyone, regardless of their background or training. Some of these practitioners may have an extensive background of information and years of experience treating patients. Others may have only attended a weekend workshop. Naturopathic doctors are very proud of their schooling and the education they have received. If you have any questions about your practitioner’s background, you should ask them or look them up on www.RealizeHealth.org.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR AND A HOMEOPATH?
Yes. Naturopathic doctors learn many modalities during their training, such as botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, counseling, nutrition and homeopathy. Naturopathic doctors have extensive training in most modalities and tend to specialize in several. Homeopaths learn one modality – homeopathy. They are also not medical practitioners and do not practice medicine. They will not do physical exams, blood tests, or diagnose your medical condition (all things that a naturopathic doctor does) and cannot prescribe medications other than homeopathic remedies.
DO NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS USE ACUPUNCTURE OR CHINESE HERBS?
Sometimes. Some naturopathic doctors spend extra time (usually a year’s worth of education, and usually earning a Master’s Degree in the process) training in the use of these two modalities. A naturopathic doctor requires further certification before being allowed to practice either of these modalities in California.
ARE MY VISITS TO A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR COVERED BY MY HEALTH INSURANCE?
Sometimes, depending on the state you live in and the company that provides your health insurance. In some states, naturopathic doctors are considered primary care physicians (PCPs) and are covered just like any other medical provider. Some insurance companies will cover blood work ordered by your naturopathic doctor. Some insurance companies will cover your entire visit. Most naturopathic doctors are happy to provide you any necessary documentation to help with this process.
California has only licensed naturopathic doctors since 2004 and although insurance companies have been slowly integrating naturopathic medical care into their benefits packages, there is no uniformity across the industry. The easiest way to determine what aspects of your visit will be covered by your plan is to contact your insurance provider.
I ALREADY HAVE A PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN (PCP). IS THERE A REASON TO SEE A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR AS WELL?
Certainly. Keep in mind that a visit to a naturopathic doctor is like a tune up is for your car – just like scheduled maintenance keeps the tow truck away, regular visits to your naturopathic doctor can keep you healthy and out of your medical doctor’s office. Disease prevention and wellness optimization are basic tenets of the philosophy of naturopathic medicine, while the education of medical doctors tends to focus on emergency care and crisis resolution. Your naturopathic doctor and your medical doctor can be part of the same team, focused on different methods to keep you healthy.
AREN’T NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS AGAINST ALL CONVENTIONAL PRESCRIPTIONS AND MEDICAL TREATMENTS?
Absolutely not. Ever since the discovery of penicillin, scientific advances in pharmacology have saved countless lives and improved wellness for generations of people. There are some modalities in conventional medicine for which naturopathic medicine provides no substitute. However, there are many levels of intervention that can be used to return a person to health and the most modern method may not be the healthiest method for the patient.
As a general rule, naturopathic doctors favor using the least invasive methods. This might mean rest, hydration, or immune-boosting herbs with antimicrobial properties for a respiratory infection. If that approach fails, then a naturopathic doctor might opt to prescribe antibiotics or refer the patient out to another specialist – the health of the patient is the ultimate concern of any doctor, regardless of whether they are naturopathic or medical.
In fact, naturopathic doctors often work with medical doctors to provide adjunct care, such as natural treatments for the side effects of oncologist-prescribed chemotherapy. The basic philosophy of the naturopathic doctor is that the patient has the ultimate responsibility for their own health and always has the final say about what level of intervention is used for their care.
WHAT DO NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS THINK ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE?
Chiropractic medicine has been shown to be very effective for certain health conditions and less effective for others. Although their scope of practice in California does not allow them to provide manipulations, naturopathic doctors are familiar with many general chiropractic techniques. A naturopathic doctor may prescribe chiropractic care or refer out to an associated chiropractor as part of your overall wellness plan.
WHAT ABOUT IRIDOLOGY? OR CRYSTAL THERAPY?
There is no scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of iridology or crystal therapy. Licensed naturopathic doctors are generally unlikely to use or recommend these modalities for this reason. Naturopathic doctors do not generally believe that all conventional medicine is bad and all alternative medicine is good; most naturopathic doctors feel that the practice of modern medicine sometimes neglects long-standing, traditional healing methods in favor of quick-fix palliative cures. In all cases, naturopathic doctors practice evidence-based medicine and concern themselves with the ultimate health of the patient, not the politics of healthcare.

Natural Solutions For Colicky Babies
New moms are extremely resourceful, because they have to be. It's why moms lean so heavily on each other for information and support.
Many moms nowadays are looking to natural infant care to complement traditional medicine.
There are many different reasons for this. One we sometimes hear from our patients is that they would prefer non-pharmaceutical strategies to help their babies and their symptoms.
Colic is one of those afflictions where parents are often presented with pharmaceuticals by their medical doctor. As a result, we have many parents turn to us for help finding alternatives to this recommendation.
One of these strategies includes finding out the reason WHY the baby is colicky.
Where does colic come from? Is a crying baby necessarily colicky? And what can you do about it?
Keep reading to find out more.
What Is Colic?
Everybody knows babies cry when they're upset. Whether they're cold, hungry, need their diaper changed, or just need some attention, babies cry. It's what they do.
Colic is the name given to an infant who cries despite there being no obvious reason.
Sometimes, usually in the first few months of life, a baby will cry furiously, despite being well taken care of.
Some people think that it can be a response to the unfamiliarity and overly-stimulating “outside” world. Often, they grow out of it as they acclimatize to life outside the womb.
However, there is no real evidence to measure this effect.
Is A Crying Baby Necessarily Colicky?
Not necessarily. It could be that they need a visit to the doctor to establish if there’s an internal issue. This could be a blockage, an internal injury, or another issue that isn’t readily observable.
However, if your doctor runs tests and can't find anything wrong, they may diagnose colic.
But just because they are crying without obvious reason doesn’t mean there isn’t something to cry about.
It could be that they are experiencing acid reflux (GERD), or gas that refuses to pass, making them feel bloated and exerting painful pressure on their little bodies.
Symptoms Of Infant Colic
A baby who is colicky is one who will cry loudly, ferociously, and often for quite some time.
Bouts of crying often happen in the latter half of the day and evening.
Infants with colic will cry so hard their faces may get red and flushed. They may also ball their hands into fists that shake as they exert themselves.
As well, their bodies can go quite rigid, with a tense stomach, and often their legs will be fully extended and locked straight.
What Causes Colic?
Because colic is the absence of recognizable symptoms, it’s hard to say what causes colic.
It's likely discomfort or pain in the gastro-intestinal system. But since your infant can’t describe it or tell you, they cry instead.
Don’t panic though: colic usually only lasts a few weeks, so you won’t have to deal with this forever.
Stay focused on finding out what the triggers are, trying different treatment options, take note of what works, and build a plan around that.
Natural Solutions For Colic
To help you out, since you may be reading this at 2am after hours of dealing with such a situation, we’ve put together some things you can do.
Some of these are quick solutions, and some are long-term, but knowing about them can help you understand what might be the problem.
1. An Elimination Diet
Moms who breastfeed are well aware that what they eat ends up in their breast milk.
That’s true for the coffee you finally caved and ordered, but also the milk in that extra-hot, no-foam latte.
Lactose intolerance is fairly common in infants, which means every time you cut another slice of brie, baby is more likely to feel it later.
By starting an elimination diet, you can cut out all possible allergens. From there, you can slowly reintroduce them to figure out which one is causing the problem.
Some new moms discover they need to go dairy-free for the duration. This may be a drag if you're a cheese lover, but it's worth the extra sleep and reduced stress.
One warning about this solution: make sure you speak to your naturopathic doctor before starting. Altering your diet and caloric intake as a breastfeeding mom can be problematic without the proper guidance.
As well, your infant depends on the nutrients delivered through your diet, so you need to make sure you're eating a well-balanced diet.
2. Hold Them Upright After You Feed Them
Holding babies upright in general seems to be favourable, but this is especially important after a feeding.
During feeding, babies tend to swallow less air if they're upright versus lying down. However, this position while feeding can be difficult to manage.
After they finish, hold them upright and help them burp. The easiest way to do this is usually by holding them against your chest with their chin on your shoulder.
Rubbing their back in a gentle motion with the occasional gentle tap will help to release the gas from their tummies.
They may need more than one burp, so if your baby is prone to colic, keep going until you’re sure they’re done.
3. Use A White Noise Machine
White noise machines are great for infants and adults alike, especially when it comes time to fall asleep.
However, for babies, a white noise machine can produce sounds that mimic what they heard inside the womb. This includes waves, which sound like the muffled noise from outside, and mama’s heartbeat.
For an immediate solution, you can always ‘shush’ into your baby’s ear gently, in a rhythmic fashion. This mimics the sound of your heart pumping blood through your body, which baby would have heard.
There are some great YouTube videos for white noise as well. Take a look at this one below - it's 10 hours straight of white noise.
Peep the comments while you're at it. There are loads of parents chatting with each other while they're awake at 3 am because they can't fall asleep and they can't close the video.
Maybe you’ll join in on their chat?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oewj_XEM1js
4. Try A Different Formula
If you’re using formula to feed your infant, then the problem could be the brand and its ingredients.
Try picking up a lactose-free formula, an elemental formula, or one with a different protein source.
Keep in mind that it will take at least two days to notice a change, so you’ll have to have patience to determine success for this remedy.
Another formula trick is to add a little bit of cereal to thicken the formula. This can prevent acid reflux. However you may then need a nipple with a larger hole for the thicker liquid.
Take note that this tip comes with a caveat: speak to your doctor first.
Giving infants cereal too early can cause them to get full too fast and not get enough of the nutrients in the formula that they need to grow.
There will be a delicate balance, and your doctor should first check out your child to ensure they’re healthy enough to proceed with this option.
5. Hold Them Close
Babies love to be held, for the most part. They're almost always happier when snuggled in someone’s arms than when they’re left alone.
It’s part of how they become socialized, develop emotions and learn.
However, some babies are born with a natural separation anxiety. This means if you put them down, they get uncomfortable with being alone.
If your baby is being particularly colicky, try holding them to stop the crying.
As well, anecdotal reports suggest that spending more time holding a baby in the early part of the day can help them be more settled at night.

These are the reasons why you may have ... Everyone has a cough every so often, says Dr. Matthew Stanbrook, a pulmonologist at Toronto Western Hospital, Canada. "But chronic cough is the one that lasts more than two months," he says. If smoking or medications were ruled out as possible causes, and radiographs are normal, there are three conditions that cause chronic cough in 90 percent of cases. Asthma Asthma that manifests with coughing is the same as usual asthma: an inflammation in the airways caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There are several effective treatments for asthma, says Stanbrook. They may indicate a bronchodilator (a puff), which instantly opens inflamed airways, or prolonged use of inhaled corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. "In general, when treating asthma from the beginning," he explains, "medication can be reduced over time and then controlled with small doses when necessary." ERGE The classic symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) include heartburn, chest pain, and reflux, but up to 20 percent of patients have chronic cough. No one knows why. The best way to diagnose the disease is to treat it with proton pump inhibitors, which block acid production. To work, the inhibitors must be taken twice a day, preferably before meals, thus reducing the amount of stomach acid that is generated when eating. The treatment can take between two and three months to work. Then, the condition is controlled with a diet to reduce reflux. The key is not to eat too late at night and avoid heavy or fatty meals. Not eating foods that make the disease worse - such as coffee, chocolate, alcohol, soda, citrus, and spicy foods - is also beneficial. Upper airway cough syndrome Formerly called postnasal drip, this disease, which is now known as Upper Airway Cough Syndrome, is a problem that usually arises from the sinuses, says Sanbrook. In general, the cause is allergies that inflame the nose or sinuses and produce additional mucus that drips down the bottom of the throat and generates a reflexive reflex. As with GERD, the best way to treat it is with a nasal steroid medication. It is recommended to avoid direct contact with allergens, such as mites and pet hair.

The Pain of Bordetella Pertussis
The Indisputable Truth About BordetellaPertussis That Nobody Is Sharing With You
Bordetella Pertussis - Overview
https://bordetella-pertussis.com
Though, recent studies have demonstrated that tissue invasion might occur. There are plenty of agents that are accountable for this infection. This procedure for obtaining a wound till the growth of infection is called pathogenesis.
Tumblr media
The Hidden Truth About Bordetella Pertussis
Though there is absolutely no cure for acid reflux, the indicators can be lowered with medication and by avoiding certain sorts of foods. As stated previously, using over-the-counter medicines for a baby isn't safe, thus don't use any of the medicines. With the aid of medications and remedies, it's important to keep it from turning into a persistent or chronic cough.
This seed infusion is claimed to work for other medical problems also. It's possible to add honey at a better taste. During the time you are taking lobelia extract, you ought to make it a point to adhere to a nutritious diet to take care of the ailment you're experiencing.
The lungs are among the main organs of our entire body. Your muscles will gradually become accustomed to the quantity of weight you're lifting and your body building will hit a plateau. A scratchy throat, together with a runny nose is often experienced by people who have common cold, a state that affects individuals of all ages.
A scratchy throat accompanied with dry cough may be caused due to quite a few explanations. There are mucolytics which thin the mucus and help it become simpler to cough out the surplus phlegm. A dry cough is distinguished by a high-pitched cough, a tickling sensation at the rear of the throat, and the most crucial is the lack of mucus or phlegm.
Cough suppressants may also be useful, even though they can lower clearance of infectious organisms and typically aren't advised for cats with pneumonia. There are several non-drowsy cough syrups out there. You might also be in possession of a persistent cough.
The Do's and Don'ts of Bordetella Pertussis
Repeated paroxysms may ensure it is hard for individuals to catch their breath. It's the child who will cover the mistakes created by the mother when pregnant, for all its life. It happens when you're talking loudly for quite a while.
In Canada, the variety of pertussis infections has varied between 2,000 and 10,000 reported cases every year over the previous ten decades, and it's the most popular vaccine-preventable illness in Toronto. Unfortunately, outbreaks of this preventable disease are increasing, due in part to the simple fact that numerous children aren't vaccinated or aren't fully vaccinated. These antibiotics result in the individual becoming less infectious but in the bulk of cases does not alter the results of the disease.
The Fight Against Bordetella Pertussis
At least 3-4 doses are essential to guard a kid from pertussis. Although the respiratory syncytial virus is among the usual causal agents, influenza virus could also lead to bronchiolitis. The infection isn't going to be considered laboratory-acquired until proven otherwise.
Host Defenses Infection induces substantial immunity, even though the protective antigens have yet to be identified conclusively. Vaccination is a crucial part of infection prevention. It does not confer lifelong immunity.
At age 2 months a collection of pertussis vaccinations is begun. An accelerated schedule of doses might be employed to finish the DTaP collection. Efficacious vaccines must be long-lasting, prevent transmission, and decrease disease burden.
