I keep forgetting that the Perfume members consist of a Capricorn (Kashiyuka), a Virgo (Nocchi), and a Aquarius (a~chan). I was gonna say why is the Aquarius the most emotional one then I remember she's got a Gemini Moon and a Scorpio Rising so it makes a little more sense.

Confession
Joshua 7: 20-23. And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done: When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under…

Isaiah 65: Even the Valley of Achor
The people Isaiah was prophesying of had strayed far from God’s way and were bent on continuing along their own path. But they did not seem to have a realization of their spiritual adultery because they also were very religious. #Isaiah65 #Religiosity
The people Isaiah was prophesying of had strayed far from God’s way and were bent on continuing along their own path. But they did not seem to have a realization of their spiritual adultery because they also were very religious. “… who say, “Keep to yourself;    do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.” Isaiah 65:5 (NRSVUE) Religiosity It was the same in Jesus’ day. The people were very…

How One Man Was Conquered By Sin
Neal Pollard He’s introduced to us right after the end of the stunning victory at Jericho (Josh. 7:1). He is from the same tribe that the Messiah would hail from. Three other ancestors besides Judah are named, and they are roughly laid out for us in 1 Chronicles 2:3-7. Achan lives in infamy as “the troubler of Israel” (1 Chron. 2:7). A man who stood shoulder to shoulder with the conquerors of…

Sin in the Camp
13 “If the whole congregation of Israel sins unintentionally and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they do any one of the things that by the Lord‘s commandments ought not to be done, and they realize their guilt, 14 when the sin which they have committed becomes known, the assembly shall offer a bull from the herd for a sin offering and bring it in front of the tent of…

Betrayal
Joshua 5:13-7:26, Psalm 50:16-23, Luke 22:39-62
Achan's betrayal of his God at the battle of Jericho is treated with collective punishment. It says that thirty-six soldiers die when the Israelites are routed from the city of Ai, a route that happened because someone took plunder from Jericho when God asked otherwise. After he confesses, he and his entire household are stoned to death.
This is the sort of thing the ancient myths are full of. Violence and human sacrifice to appease the angry gods. I have a hard time considering it holy when it looks so bestial, lower even than human. Achan confessed. He admitted his wrongdoing and appeared to repent, I think. And still he was killed.
We live in a world where collective punishment happens. Many people suffer for the sins of others. People in the middle east suffer droughts and starvation because poeple in the west burned far more fossil fuels than we need. The collective punishment for screwing up the environment is going to fall heavily on those who did not cause it. Does this prove that God is evil? Does it prove that we are evil?
I don't think those are terribly useful questions. I think this collective punishment is just one facet of the beautiful jewel that is our collective nature. We evolved collectively. We thrive and suffer collectively. And when one human starts enriching themselves at the expense of others, we cut them out like the cancer they are. Just kidding. We worship them. But we're working on that.
And God? Well, he showed up to be one of us. When Peter betrayed him he forgave. He made Peter breakfast and asked him, "Do you love me? Do you still want to be a friend? Would you sacrifice for me?" And Peter did. He didn't claim to sacrifice himself, not after failing so hard, but he wanted to be Jesus's friend. And he did, eventually, die for Jesus or so the traditional story goes.
Could God have made a better world where collective punishment doesn't happen? I have no idea what that would look like. Is there a good theoretical theology book that suggests better concepts of God? Maybe that's presumptuous.
