Stinging Nettles!!

A post on their uses, how to propogate them, and their attributes.

If you're like me, you get a little pissed off when you're out foraging and get stung by one of these suckers. I get it, it's a pain; but did you know that Stinging Nettles are incredibly useful to us?

This is the first part of an upcoming series where I talk about the herbs that I see a lot (I am currently in the United Kingdom). Enjoy!

Quick info:

Ortica dioca, of the Urticacaea family.

Other names include: Devil's Claw, Devil's Plaything, Nettle, Burn Hazel, Burn Weed, Ortiga Ancha, sting-leaf, Hoky-poky, Heg-beg.

Gender: male/masculine

Planet: Mars

Element: Fire

Associated deities: Hades, Horus, Cernnonus, Jupiter, Osiris, Pluto, Thor, Vishnu, serpentine deities, and Vulcan

Zodiac signs: Aries and Scorpio

Commonly found in moist and shady places in Europe, Asia, and North America.

They are important larval foods for many different species of butterflies and moths.

Propagation

Plant nettles six to twelve inches apart in moist, rich soil that has access to shade (they usually do well in a pot as well). If they are grown in a garden they should be surrounded by a barrier of some kind (both above and underground) to prevent them from taking control of your garden. Cut nettles back before they seed so they don't spread out of control.

Harvesting and Storage

Be sure to wear thick gloves and long sleeves and jeans when harvesting as their stingers can pierce through thin fabric. Pluck young nettles in the spring and dry/steam then freeze to store; cooking or drying them will destroy the sting. Do not harvest or eat later season leaves as they will start to get tough and grainy which can cause urinary issues.

Cut the stalks to the ground in Autumn, strip them of their leaves and flatten to dry. You may use the stripped leaves in your compost bin to be used as fertiliser for your plants. Once dried, the stalks can be broken up to to retrieve the long fibres for hand spinning or shredded to make paper.

If you wait until the first frost to harvest your nettles for fibre, you will find them a lot easier to work with.

Magickal Attributes

Nettles can be burned to drive out negative or unwanted spirits as well as being used in protection bags. Also, they can be ground into a powder and used in spells to break curses. It can remove/repel hexes; keeps fear, anxiety, doubts, and stresses at bay, as well as being quite effective at keeping sickness such as colds away (I find this to be very effective when used in tea).

Stinging nettle is a strong purifier and is great at attracting abundance, courage, and inner strength.

Medicinal Uses

You can make it into a tea as an addition to diet for anyone recovering from a long illness or if you suffer from chronic weakness, fatigue, or anemia. Steep dry or fresh leaves in boiling water for 10 minutes and strain. This will destroy the sting and you will have a tasty and nutritious broth to show your witchcraft buddies.

It is also great for urinary tract/inflammatory conditions. Freeze dried nettles are useful for keeping hayfever at bay and with allergic conditions. You can also mush the leaves up with boiling water and apply it to closed wounds like bruises (let it dry and cool down first!).

Warnings

While they are generally perfectly safe to consume, they can act as a diuretic and stimulate stomach/abdominal contractions when eaten in large amounts. If you are already taking diuretics, have problems with your blood sugar or blood pressure, or are pregnant, approach nettles with caution

If you are taking this for a condition or serious illness, contact a doctor first to make sure that it is safe for you to use. NEVER use as a replacement for prescribed medicine.

Litha, Summer Solstice, Midsummer, Witches Lesser Sabbat

A time when the life of Gaia is blooming and Summer is in full swing. This is the height of the Wheel of the Year; the turning point of Light to Dark halves of the year. This really should be a greater Sabbat, but who am I but a humble Crone that attempts to write without biases. The Sabbats can be celebrated on the day of, a few day, a week, or weeks, it is all based on your path and personal preference. (Remember this- Your Craft, Your Way please)

Based on where one lives the Sacred 8 Sabbats are flipped around for the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres. It’s all based on the Equator, the Tropic Of Cancer. Litha is one of those Sabbats that is celebrated in June for the Northern Hemisphere, whilst in the Southern Hemisphere we celebrate our Winter Solstice and Yule during December. For the Southern Hemisphere Litha the date is December 21, 2021. Litha is also known by the names of: Midsummer and St. John’s Day.

The Summer Solstice and Litha is when the Day is the longest and the night is the shortest. In the Southern Hemisphere the Winter Solstice and Yule the day is the shortest and the night the longest. Litha is a time to honor Father Sun or the Son of the Goddess. The Solstices both share a similarity of both of them revolve around Fire. Regardless of the Pantheons that you follow and honor the Solar Godform is honored now.

Litha is about a celebration of the abundance of our hard work, our “crops we have sown”, growth, maximum strength & power of the Sun within you & upon you. The Earth is full of life, the springtime animals born are growing up; as we continue & grow- or as our Intentions set on Beltane are growing/grown. On Litha it’s customary to hold a Bonfire Ritual, or a Cauldron Fire and toss in your intentions to bring forth or to banish. Our ancestors did this for luck, protection, fertility, and many other reasons also. The term Solstice in Latin means, “Sun Stand Still” roughly. We too should stand still for a bit before we start preparing for the Dark Half of the Year.

Alright, new headcanon blog! I love these! Alright, so, here's a shot in the dark: What job or career path(s) do you think everyone would take? Or volunteer work even. Please and thankies, and I can't wait to see what new material you come up with!

Career Paths/ Volunteer Work

Sans: It could go two ways for this big brained dude, he would either be in the teaching field, or the scientific field. I feel like he'd only do it related to either astronomy or geology (keeping that pet rock has it's uses). But I do feel that ultimately, he might lean more towards teaching, there's just something about spreading knowledge that pushes him. He also gets to learn new things as well, everyday, which is a bonus for him!

Papyrus: Papyrus really loves doing humanitarian work but he also loves a fun and conducive environment. I can see him being a kindergarten teacher because he works the best with kids, they're all curious little things, and he loves their enthusiasm for even the smallest things possible. Besides that, he would be a firefighter, he is absolutely fearless and with his stature and his energy, he's equipped for even the most difficult tasks. (Also, it'll result in really buff Paps-)

Blue: Believe it or not, he'd do something that's heavy in marketing. Blue knows he's charismatic, and that charm can go over well when used properly, and boy does he make sure to do that. He would also be a good motivational speaker, he's got a silver tongue and knows how to lace and etch his words into people and monsters minds alike.

Stretch: Stretch gets stressed out easily, so he prefers an environment that's calm and not chaotic. He would be a beekeeper, it's calm and he only has to deal with the bees and distribute their honey, it ain't much and he likes it that way. He also prefers working with animals as he feels like he connects better to them on emotional level as he just can't bring himself to trust other humans/monsters besides his own brother.

Red: Red loves to get into the tiniest detail of things, it's one of his ways to cope and he ended up sticking with it. He likes to take stuff apart and see what makes them tick, how they function and what improvements could be done if there are any. It's why I feel like he might get himself into engineering. The process of tinkering and fixing something not only keeps him calm and has his mind focused on something, but he also feels useful, that he can fix something instead of damaging further.

Edge: One of the things that have stuck with Edge after coming onto the surface was his love for cooking. Overtime, he does accept the fact that his food is not.. Up to par for human consumption. He does make the effort to learn, despite not liking the criticism. Eventually, he starts small, selling food at events like weddings and parties but with enough money, he does open his own restaurant. (His lasagna and penne ala vodka are to die for)

Black: Because of the fact that he's so factual and loves to have the upper hand, he would most likely be a lawyer. He's very hard headed and doesn't give in easily, and with his loud, booming voice full of confidence, it's impossible for him to not win the case.

Rus: He doesn't like staying in one place, he loves traveling so much. He also adores getting memorable photos of beautiful places with little to no effort, he has an absolute talent for photography. But he may also be involved with touring and being in bands, more as a guitarist or drummer rather than taking center stage because he's just not that confident. The adrenaline of it and hearing the loud tunes blasting really gets him going.

Wine: He doesn't really work after reaching the surface, after all, the gold he has is enough to last him and his brother for several lifetimes. Though if he was inclined to do so, he might have a winery of only the finest kind, or maybe he'd have a boutique. He does love making dresses and he makes sure that he's quality is one of a kind that even name brands envy him.

Coffee: Now, Coffee initially decided to take it easy and lay back, enjoying the leisure time of doing absolutely nothing. But then.. He got bored, and he had wanted to do something, he had wanted to do it for himself, to be more exact. So he got a job at a pet shelter, like Stretch, he feels more comfortable around the presence of animals, especially those that are rather skittish and afraid due to being placed in terrible homes.

Thistle: When he heard the concept of gardening, he got very excited about it. The ability to grow an abundance of foods and to also bring life to something and watch it flourish before his eye had just effected him so personally that he couldn't see himself doing anything else other than that. All his notes are filled with info for each fruit/plant available, growing a rich vegetable garden and everyone had flocked to buy it from them, making his job a whole lot easier.

Chestnut: He decided to follow a similar route to his brother, but instead of vegetables, Chestnut had decided to go with a botanical garden. He couldn't help but admire how some flowers would end up surviving even in the harshest climates, along with the fact that he just enjoys learning the meanings that each of them have. He also enjoys being outside, sitting in the bright sunlight as he planted a new seed into the ground, there was a serenity to it that he can't quite place a finger on, but it made him fulfilled.

As for volunteering, all of the skeletons would do it every now and then, but the ones who do it the most are Papyrus, Blue, Stretch, Rus, Thistle and Chestnut. Papyrus also tends to bring his students along to show that kindness goes a long way, Blue does it while also making an effort to encourage others to join more in volunteering. Meanwhile, Rus, Stretch, Thistle and Chestnut tend to help out the homeless, Rus taking photographs and making sure all the proceeds go to charities while the other three donate food that they've harvested.

If you’re like me, you’ve been spending these last days of summer dreaming of fall. Its closer than ever, with the Fall Equinox on September 23rd this year! I like to plan my sabbats ahead of time, so I’ve begun to plan for Mabon.

Here is a compilation of info on Mabon from my Book of Shadows!

🍂Date: Mabon falls in between September 21-23. 

🍂Basics: Mabon celebrates the beginning of Autumn, the Second Harvest, and the Fruit Harvest. Physically and metaphorically, it is a time to reap what you sow and give thanks to the Earth for the abundance of Summer. The Autumn Equinox is a time of equal light in dark in the day, bringing forth themes of equality and balance. 

🍂Reflect on: The Summer, and the blessings that came with it. Think of the ever-turning Wheel of the Year, and the changes that Fall and Winter will bring. Begin to change your mindset to the darker side of the year, a time for comfort, rest, and thanksgiving. Use this time to give thanks and count your blessings. 

🍂Corresponding herbs: Sage, pine, cinnamon, rosemary, thyme. Smells and spices that make you feel at home. 

🍂What to do: There’s so many things to do to celebrate the coming of Autumn! If you are a Kitchen Witch, or just enjoy cooking, this is your time! 

     Use your dried herbs from the Summer, if you have any. Make pie, bread, herbed butter, and fall vegetables like squash and pumpkin. 

     Drink apple cider and spiced coffee and teas. 

     Watch a fall movie/tv show. I’d recommend Over the Garden Wall, Gravity Falls (even though it takes place in Summer), and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Save the spooky movies for as it gets closer to Samhain.  

     Do Fall crafts

     As always, spend time outdoors! Go on a hike in the woods, collecting fallen leaves and acorns for your altar. Responsibly harvest some of last flowers of the year before it gets too cold!

🍂What I’m doing: This Mabon, I am planning quite a lot to welcome Autumn! The day before, I have plans to go apple picking. I’ll definitely pick up lots of apples, cider, and more to enjoy the next day, and in the coming weeks! The day of, I want to make an apple crumble, bread, a vegan roast, and some other things to enjoy with my family! I’ll do some fall crafts (currently undecided) and post them when I do! I’ll go on a little walk in the woods by my house, collecting things for my altar. To finish off the day I’ll watch something that makes me really feel like its Autumn. The whole day I’ll give thanks for the Summer and reflect on the coming months. As Mabon nears, I’ll think of some tarot spreads, prayers, and rituals to do during the day.

🍂 Lammas is a celebration of harvest; it’s the realization that the green earth’s energies and bustling growth are beginning to slow down, darker and the colder days will arrive soon and summer is coming to an end. The warm days are still lingering, the sun god is losing his strength; he is finishing putting his energies into the earth now, producing the first of the two harvests, but he has not yet come to an end. The goddess’s condition has now changedl she is the grain mother. She will dry the crops and let the seeds fall from them into the earth now, where they will rest all through winter,returning at Imbolc. The main theme of Lammas is fulfilment; the earth is producing a harvest and providing us with food.

🍁 HOW TO CELEBRATE IT🍁- 

Lammas celebrations reflect the achievements of the physical,mental, emotional and creative labours of the last few months.

🍁 ACTIVITIES 🍁:

🍂 Create a corn mother or a corn dolly. These can be made from things left over from the first harvest in the fields- corn,reeds,wheat,etc...

🍂 Relevant spells to cast at this time of the year are for abundance, connection, career, mental or physical gain. Cast your circle with relevant grains such as oats,corn and wheat; this can strengthen your circle.

🍂 Also, if you have any spells where you require the sun’s energies, cast them now!

🍂 This is a time for fulfillment, especially  when it comes from the harvest.

🍂 Create a meal for your loved ones with all the home-grown food you may have produced in your garden and herb garden.

🍂 This is the last opportunity of the year to enjoy the outdoors, while there is still some warmth, so if you haven’t already done so,go on picnics,walks,bike rides and visits to the beach. Go out and collect fallen seeds from nearby fields, parks and paths and plant them ready for next Imbolc.

🍂 This is a perfect time for you to create your broom, gathering old twigs, reeds and wood which are easy to find at Lammas. They’re an amazing magical tool and a representation of fulfillment and home.

🍂 Perform Lammas harvesting rituals to honour the sun god for the last time.

Light  gold,yellow,brown,orange and black candles to represent the earth changing from green to brown,autumnal colours, and black for the darker days arriving.

Tie ribbons and drape cloth at your altar, in the colours of gold,yellow, orange and brown. You can also wear these colors to honor the Sabbat.

Scatter relevant grains from the harvest to honour the fulfillment you feel at this time of the year: wheat,corn,onion,oats,barley and rye.
