Abe Lincoln wax sculpture melts in brutal DC heat
He kept a cool head during the American Civil War, but a heatwave proved too much for his statue. A wax effigy of President Abraham Lincoln has melted as temperatures soared over the weekend in the nation's capital.
The head went first, then one of his legs dripped off its torso and a foot turned into a blob. The chair sank into the ground.
The head from the 6ft wax sculpture of the Lincoln Memorial is now under repair, leaving behind a wire sticking out of the 16th president's neck.
The memorial rests on the site of Camp Barker in Washington DC - a Civil War-era refugee camp that housed formerly enslaved and freed African Americans - now home to an elementary school.
It was placed outside of Garrison Elementary School as part of The Wax Monument Series by Virginia-based artist Sandy Williams IV.
The replica is more than just a wax statue - it is also a candle. And this is not the first time it had issues with melting.

Abraham Lincoln
But of the handful of men who have held that office, a few have stood out for their great achievements and leadership in a time that changed the country for ever. And one of these truly great presidents was Abraham Lincoln. Probably more than any other president, Lincoln had to handle an internal civil war that was far more than shouting and name calling. This was a dispute that could have torn the country in half and starting a rupturing that could have resulted in dozens of small weak independent states instead of the powerful nation we know as America today.
African Americans Revolution Academic Research Paper Pdf
It was Lincoln’s leadership, his commitment to values and his strong moral fiber that made it possible for America to find its way through that war and then to begin the healing process that would eventually lead the nation back to unity once again. Lincoln’s term of service from 1860 until his death was one of considerable challenge. If he only had the problem of dealing with the attempt by the south to succeed from the union and his ability to keep those states as part of the American national territory, he would be lauded as a great American indeed.
One of the little known leadership styles that Lincoln used to his advantage in the organization of his presidency was his appointment of talented national figures from opposing political parties to be part of his cabinet. Lincoln felt that he needed to have close advisors from the opposing viewpoint to keep from having his presidency become insulated from the American people and one sided. By gathering members of the “loyal opposition” into his trusted inner circle, Lincoln was always aware of both sides of every issue which made him a stronger leader.
But that is not even his greatest accomplishment or the one that we remember him for the most. His bold and unchanging opposition to slavery is without any doubt his greatest contribution to the history of America and indeed to world history as well. When he was willing to put everything on the line to stop this barbaric social sin, Lincoln made a stand, against the popular opinion of the time in many cases that he would be the figure to bring slavery to an end.
It was not a stand that came without cost. The civil war was one of the bloodiest and costliest in the nation’s history if for no other reason than all casualties; on both sides were casualties of America. It would take many decades for the ravages of that horrible war to be repaired. The schism between north and south continued for decades and is still a part of our national personality in this country.
But the end result was what Lincoln wanted to be his legacy. By issuing the Emancipation Proclamation to make the end of slavery permanent, Lincoln followed that up with the passing of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments which made permanent the freedoms that were hard fought and won in the Civil War.
The freedom that was won for so many black Americans in that war permanently enshrined the memory of Abraham Lincoln as one of our greatest presidents in the hearts and minds of all Americans. Small wonder the monument honoring him on Washington’s national mall is one of the most revered spots in the nation and one that thousands flock to each year to give respect for this great president that made liberty and freedom a reality for all Americans, not just a few. And his face on Mount Rushmore is well deserved so the very mountain itself shouts out, this is one of the greatest leaders in the history of this great country.

In December 2020, the city of Boston listened to protesters' demands and removed its replica of the Emancipation Memorial built in Washington DC's Lincoln Park. The statue depicts Abraham Lincoln holding his hand over a kneeling Black man, imagery that was criticized as far back as 1876 by none other than Frederick Douglass: "The negro here, though rising, is still on his knees and nude. What I want to see before I die is a monument representing the negro, not couchant on his knees like a four-footed animal, but erect on his feet like a man." #presidentsday #goodblacknewscalendar #blackhistorymonth #americanhistory🇺🇸 https://www.instagram.com/p/Co5BZaauT9n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

HE DIED BROKE
HE DIED BROKE - https://keywestlou.com/he-died-broke/Several years ago, I visited Washington, DC as a tourist. Previously, only as a lawyer who never had the time to visit our national monuments. I was especially interested in the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln majestically seated. It was the Jefferson Memorial that affected me the most, however. A bronze Thomas Jefferson standing 19 feet tall. Atop a large granite block. Impressive! Overwhelming! Jefferson's public career was outstanding. Few political leaders have achieved the successes he did. Abraham Lincoln referred to Jefferson as ".....the most distinguished politician in our history." Some of Jefferson's accomplishments included being a Founding Father of our Nation, the author of the Declaration of Independence, President of the United States, Vice President before, a spokesperson for democracy, a member of the Continental Congress, Governor of Virginia, Minister to France, first Secretary of State, the Louisiana purchase, opposition to slavery (though he owned over 200 slaves), signed the law banning the importation of slaves to the United States, founded the University of Virginia, spoke five languages, designed the mansion at his 5,000 acre plantation Monticello, and authorized the funding and construction of West Point. A special person. A special President. His image sits on Mount Rushmore. Unfortunately, Jefferson died broke. Not a penny available for his family. His beloved Monticello sold to pay debts. Jefferson was born to wealth. His was a wealthy slave owning family. Wealth back then could be measured by the number of slaves one owned. Slaves were property and had a value. Jefferson had everything going for him from an economic perspective. His problem was he could not manage money. There was not a time when he did not have cash flow problems. He had difficulty balancing his check book. He always spent more than he took in. At the time of his death, Jefferson owed more than $1 million in today's money. His final days before his death were not spent in fond remembrances of the past. He was sickly and bed ridden. He spent most of his waking hours going over his finances and debts. In the end, there was no estate to pass on to heirs. His estate, possessions and slaves were sold at public auctions. His daughter was forced to sell Monticello. His final services did not befit a man of his stature. By choice. Jefferson had directed that no one be invited. His wishes were honored. The services were simple and quiet. His remains were carried by servants, family and friends to his Monticello grave site. Jefferson was distrustful of banks his entire life. Living on the edge of economic disaster, he developed what can only be described as a hatred for banks. He viewed banks in a fashion similar to how they are looked upon today. Regarding banks, Jefferson wrote the following. His prophecy relatively correct: "If the American people ever allow banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless.....I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies." Jefferson's was a sad ending to a brilliant career. Though of his own making, he was poorly treated in his later years. The Upper Keys have installed AED's. Emergency cardiac arrest boxes. Key West should do so. I have a heart condition. I put my money where my mouth is. I wear a Medical Alert System. Hangs around my neck. I press a button and within minutes the world is around me to help. Ambulance, emergency assistance, fire engine and police. The System costs $54.95 a month. Only needed it once in the 3 years I have had it. Fell down the stairs, fractured 2 vertebras. Couldn't get up. Two in the morning. Glad I had it! I can afford it. Not everyone can. Everyone should have some sort of protection. The AED boxes are a partial assistance to the second biggest killer in the U.S. Heart attacks. Key West pisses a lot of money away. AED is not a waste of tax dollars. It is a protection available all. The Front page of today's KeysNews carries an excellent article concerning the AED's. The La Concha Hotel is almost 100 years old. Opened to the public this date in 1925. The formal grand opening took place January 22, 1926. What follows are excerpts from page 2 of the Executive Summary to the January 6 Committee Report. The page overall testimony by certain insurrectionists. These persons openly acknowledging they had betrayed their country. Remier: "And I'm sorry to the people of this country for threatening the democracy that makes this country so great." Pert: "I know the peaceful transition of power is to ensure the common good for our nation and that it is critical in protecting our country's security needs." Markofski: "My actions put me on the other side of the line from my brothers in the Army. The wrong side. Had I lived in the area, I would have been called upon to defend the Capitol and restore order.....My actions brough dishonor to my beloved U.S. Army National Guard." Witcher: "Every member - every male member of my family has served in the military, in the Marine Corps, and most have saw combat. And I cast a shadow and cast embarrassment upon my family name and that legacy." Today a big one for Syracuse. We play in a bowl game for the first time in years. Against Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Two pm. Busy day for me. A haircut with Lori. Then rush home to catch the game. Enjoy your day!

There, at the far end, is the figure of Abraham Lincoln, four times life-size. The Dazzling Washington, DC Experiences
Welcome to the Nation's Capital, a city that has it all: historic sites, museums, shopping, dining, and, of course, friendly people. Washington, DC experiences, offers a lively city with many rich performing arts, historical attractions, fun activities, and enjoyable experiences for any age. Lovers of art can visit various museums, fans of architecture can explore the most famous monuments, gourmets will find culinary delights in restaurants, and admirers of the atmosphere can enjoy the atmosphere of colorful neighborhoods. Let's look at the many Washington, DC experiences of this magnificent place next.
Exploring the National Mall and Memorial
The National Mall is the central focus of some of the top attractions and activities in Washington, DC. It is over two miles long and has many pillars, iconic museums, and memorials, and one can spend a few days just exploring this area alone.
Begin your walk from the western end of the mall to see the statue of the president, Abraham Lincoln. Go up and touch the walls where the president's best speeches are engraved. Then, walk next door to the well-lit Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, which lists the names of over 58,000 American casualties of the war on two black walls.
The Washington Monument is a five-minute walk east of the Smithsonian Institution; if you get tickets to take an elevator to the top of the monument, you can catch a wide-angle glimpse of the entire city.
Carry on along the Mall's north side to shop for artifacts from Smithsonian institutions, including the National Air and Space Museum, Museum of American History, and Natural History Museum. The east end of the mall leads to the U.S. Capitol Building, where one can embark on a tour to behold the lavish designs and understand the history of Congress.
Explore The Arts and Cultures
Apart from the historical landmarks, Washington, DC is well-endowed with arts and cultural sites. Kennedy Center still holds a show, and theater lovers can watch the beautiful sunsets and the Potomac River.
For classical music and dance, the National Symphony Orchestra is active year-round for performances in the Kennedy Center's Concert Hall. Other events are free for visitors who wish to watch at the Millennium Stage. The National Mall has a variety of choices where one can listen to culture and arts; at the American History Museum, Jazz performances are held; at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, modern artwork by American artists is displayed.
The National Gallery of Art consists of two buildings and contains more than 140000 paintings, sculptures, and other rare cultural pieces dating back to 7 centuries. It is also advisable to look for other attractions that may be at the venue when planning.
Exploring Diverse Neighborhoods
The neighborhoods of Washington, DC are extremely diverse, and there is much to enjoy about the charm of the city. Georgetown is a famous area that boasts of houses with colonial architectural designs, upscale shops, and eateries reflected in the Georgetown Waterfront along the Potomac River.
Head down to M Street, Wisconsin Avenue, during the afternoon and walk around visiting nice shops and cafes. Go on with the D.C.'s hottest rooftop lounge, looking over the entire neighborhood even at night. For more details on Washington, DC, places, click here.
For a taste of the African-American heritage, visit the capital's Shaw district, where the National Museum of African American History and Culture is located. Spend some time in themed exhibitions that recreate stories of African Americans and reveal the achievements of black people. U Street near the referenced area was lively during the Harlem Renaissance and even today contains several African-American businesses and hangouts, with jazz clubs open late into the night.
Sampling Distinctive Cuisines
When it comes to food choice, D.C. lacks nothing; the place is an ethnic and fusion food heaven. Different food tours are ideal for getting a taste and, at the same time, enjoying the major sites.
Latin influences can be seen across the city, although it particularly stands out in Columbia Heights. For meals, sample pupusas from El Salvador accompanied by horchata in restaurants specializing in El Salvadorian foods.
Ethiopic takes the culinary experience to the next level by preparing traditional Eritrean recipes in a fine dining setting while serving spicy curries and vegetable stews over injera.
Hummus bowls and pita wraps from the Little Sesame restaurant are delicious with Middle Eastern flavors and a modern twist that can be found in Chinatown in the downtown area.
For Asians, Dear Bellingham is an utterly new restaurant that offers refined small plates where Chinese and Korean are combined in food preparation. Also, book a table at the three-Michelin-starred Inn at Little Washington, about 90 minutes outside of the city, offering a lavish dining experience amidst Virginia's rural greens.
Beautiful monuments, rich cultural and social life, and historical landmarks – There is always something new in the Washington, DC experiences list for first-timers and frequent travelers. This is ideal for use as a reference for the places of interest when getting around, as it is easily manageable on foot near the mall. But also afraid not to try taking the Metro lines, ride dockless bikes/scooters, or go around in the city via open-top, hop on, hop off bus tours! When going for some activities and tours, one can book for them in advance to help avoid long queues.

Schools should teach that America is exceptional—not because Americans are better people than others—but because we have set up a system of rights that, over time, have become available to people who come to this country from all parts of the world. To get at the core of American identity, students should ask: if a foreign country invaded the United States, what monuments and artifacts would be most important to try to preserve because they go to the essence of what it means to be an American? For me personally, the most important monuments to our nation’s values start with the National Archives, home of the essential documents of our liberal democracy—the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Emancipation Proclamation. I would also include the Statue of Liberty, symbolizing America’s openness to legal immigrants from across the world no matter their racial or ethnic origin. And I would want to protect from attack the memorials to Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr., who helped America live up to its declared values, and would encourage people to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial in North Carolina, a symbol of American ingenuity and free enterprise. The lessons in the textbooks will only take firm hold if they are reinforced by the daily experience of students. To maintain social cohesion, and underline democracy’s message that we all have equal rights, officials should take strong steps to bring children of different racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds together to learn—not through compulsory busing but through public school choice and housing policy. Community service programs in school and national service programs after high school graduation should be used to bridge divides and ignite patriotic sentiments. The federal government can support these various policies through a race to the top program to sustain promising practices centered around teaching balanced history and civics education, and promoting school integration, and community service. The stakes of teaching American identity are enormous. Human beings have a natural yearning to identify with groups that pursue a larger purpose. If educators don’t help students develop a reflective patriotism, extremists will offer false alternatives centered around race or ethnic identities. The good news is that the public supports a better path. Instilling a renewed sense of American identity could inspire a “patriotism dividend,” a strong sense of national community that has provided the precondition for all this country’s great movements for social change over time. Best of all, it could help put America on better footing to sustain its grand experiment in liberal democratic governance for another 250 years—a worthy goal to ponder this July 4th holiday.

The statue was installed at the same location last September, but the first version of the wax monument included over 100 wicks that were prematurely lit, melting a significant portion of the art installation ahead of its dedication ceremony.
The new version installed in February has strategically placed (and fewer) wicks. A plaque below reads: "Please blow out your wick within 1-2 minutes."
The installation is a "direct commentary on DC's history of Civil War-era Contraband Camps", according to its website.
The replica, commissioned by non-profit CulturalDC, is the third installation of Williams' 40 ACRES Archive - The Wax Monument series which includes wax replicas of popular public monuments and cultural symbols.
The DC-metro area was under a heat alert over the weekend. High temperatures are expected to continue throughout this week.
The wax head is set to be reattached this week, local media outlets reported.
