I have never been a big paranormal manga reader, but ever since last year when I read Beasts of Abigaile from Seven Seas, I feel that's changed!

I've picked up more series with vampires and werewolves the past few months and I have LOVED it! This shoujo was so good and definitely think it set the bar high for other series I try!

Beasts of Abigaile, Vol. 1

By Spica Aoki. Released in Japan as “Bara Kangoku no Kemono-tachi” by Akita Shoten, serialization ongoing in the magazine Princess. Released in North America digitally by Seven Seas. Translated by Alethea and Athena Nibley, Adapted by Marykate Jasper.

Once again, a manga I had very few expectations for manages to please me greatly. I always enjoy it when this happens, particularly when it’s shoujo. The premise of this seemed to be ‘Werewolf reverse harem’, which did not inspire confidence, and I admit that when I first read the words ‘Alpha, Beta and Omega’ midway through, my heart sank. But it won me over anyway, partly due to the art (the artist is really good at facial expressions, particularly in the case of Nina, the heroine) and partly due to Nina herself, who is a great combination of spunky, stubborn, and sort of goofy in the best way. We haven’t seen a title from the ‘Princess’ magazine in quite some time – Tokyopop used to do a lot of their stuff before they shuttered their manga line – and I like that it feels different from the Big Three’s shoujo titles.

The premise is that Nina and her uncle have arrived at the vaguely Mediterranean country of Ruberia, apparently to get a fresh start after getting bullied so bad in Japan she had to flee the country. Unfortunately, no sooner has she gone exploring then an escaped convict runs past her, and when she tries to stop him using her martial arts fighting skills (because yes, she’s that sort of heroine), he tackles her and bites her neck, causing her to pass out. After some brief suspicious guards catch the convict, they shove her into the paddy wagon as well. When she comes to, she finds herself on the prison island off the coast of the country, which turns out to be populated by werewolves, all of whom are prisoners of sadistic human guards, trained and tortured to be servants to the country’s human population. Which is troubling enough, except… Nina now has wolf ears and a tail too! Did the bite turn her into a werewolf? And how will she survive?

As you may have guessed by the description above, this title is gloriously silly and over the top. If you take it seriously, I’m not sure it would actually work. The characters are not blazingly original – we get the seemingly nice guy who’s actually in thrall to the Queen Bee, we get the incredibly jealous girl who hates Nina getting the attention of her love (no doubt she will attack Nina viciously in Volume 2), and of course we get Roy, who’s the sort of smug but sexy and mysterious jerk that every shoujo manga needs. Luckily, Nina fights back – in fact, the final moment in this volume made me laugh out loud at a shoujo cliche getting subverted, and I daren’t spoil it. Nina also ends up in a pack of trans werewolves, and while they tend towards the stereotypes and sometimes a punchline, they don’t seem to be there to be made fun of, which is nice.

Basically, as long as you don’t mind werewolf cliches (I did mention the alpha thing), this is a hell of a lot of fun, especially Nina. I look forward to the next volume.

  Eigentlich wollte Nina in Ruberia nur die Highschool machen, doch dann kam alles anders. Für sie war Ruberia schon immer ein wunderbarer Ort, der durch die Legende der Werwölfe nur noch spannender wurde, aber ihr Onkel trieb ihr das aus. Als sie aber mit ihren 16 Jahren wieder dorthin ging, stellte sich heraus, dass es keine Legende war. Sie wollte einen Flüchtigen aufhalten und den Beamten gegenüber hilfsbereit sein, da biss sie dieser und auf einmal fand sie sich auf der mysteriösen Insel Abigale wieder. Was sie zuvor für ein Gefängnis gehalten hatte, stellte sich nun als Erziehungsanstalt für Loup-Ga heraus – ein Internat für Werwölfe.

    Ich habe den Manga gekauft, weil die Geschichte eigentlich ganz witzig klang, aber von den Neuerscheinungen von Tokyopop, speziell von den Shojo war ich in letzter Zeit etwas enttäuscht. Daher bin ich auch ohne große Erwartungen heran gegangen und wurde tatsächlich positiv überrascht 😊

  Ninas Gerechtigkeitssinn übersteigt ihre Körpergröße bei weitem. Sie stellt sich vor jeden, der ungerecht behandelt wird oder der nach ihrem Ermessen falsch handelt. Dabei ist ihr egal, ob sie einer autoritären Persönlichkeit gegenüber steht oder nicht. Sie wirft sich zwischen einen kleinen Loup-Ga und dem strengen Lehrer, der ihn mit der Peitsche schlagen will, auch wenn sie nicht weiß, wem sie da gegenüber steht. Die Erkenntnis nicht Heim zu dürfen trifft sie allerdings hart. Auch, wie sich die Wölfe in ihrer Gegenwart benehmen, aber genauso widerfährt ihr gutes.

Der Rüpel Roy ist der Alpha des Hauses Hunter. Er hat sie gebissen und kennt ihr Geheimnis. Für ihn war es aber ebenso überraschend, dass sie sich plötzlich in einen Wolf verwandelt hatte. Obwohl er sie nicht in seinem Rudel – oder Home, wie sie es bezeichnen – haben möchte, markiert er sie in aller Öffentlichkeit als seines, was Eva sehr wütend macht. Sie hegt deutlich Gefühle für den Alpha.

Ganz anders ist hingegen Gil. Er ist ein hilfsbereiter Junge, der allerdings sehr unter der Fuchtel seiner Alpha steht. Was noch nachvollziehbar ist, denn immerhin ist sie die Schülersprecherin und er im Schülerrat. Trotzdem könnte er meiner Meinung nach etwas mehr Rückgrat zeigen. Zudem hat er gleich bemerkt, dass Nina kein geborener Wolf ist.

Kurz zu erwähnen wären an dieser Stelle auch noch Dario und Poh. Kurzfristig ist Nina in den Home von Dario eingestiegen. Er ist eine kleine Diva und möchte Designer werden, aber ein netter Wolf. Genauso Poh, der etwas kleiner – auch jüngere? – Wolf ist nicht sehr beliebt, er ist ein Gamma und gehört zu keinem Rudel. Mit ihm spricht keiner, doch alle lieben seine Bilder. Mir war er allerdings sofort sympathisch und auch Nina findet, dass die anderen ihn ungerecht behandeln.

  So, bevor ich noch mehr verrate, höre ich an dieser Stelle auf. Auch wenn es noch ein paar Charaktere gibt, das nun waren wohl die Wichtigsten.

Eigentlich wirkt der Manga wie eine Teenager-Internats-Geschichte. Doch durch die Loup-Ga und die Hintergründe von dem Ganzen, ist er wesentlich spannender. Ich möchte an dieser Stelle nicht mehr zu viel Spoilern, doch für mich hat er sich gelohnt und Tokyopop hat da wieder etwas sehr gutes gebracht.

Doch etwas muss ich schon noch los werden, denn auch hier habe ich wieder so meine Theorien 😉

  ACHTUNG SPOILER 

Es wird bereits erwähnt, dass sich kein Mensch von einem Biss in einen Loup-Ga verwandelt. Eventuell braucht es also mehrere Bisse, sprich Nina wurde schon einmal gebissen oder(unterstreichen) sie ist von Geburt an ein Loup-Ga und es wurde nur durch den Biss aktiviert.

Des Weiteren sprach Dario von einem König, auf den alle warten und ich wette und bin mir relativ sicher, dass Nina etwas damit zu tun hat. Dass sie eine Nachfahrin davon ist oder letztlich Roy der König wird. Eins von beidem kann ich mir sehr gut vorstellen.

Ebenso könnte ich mir sehr gut vorstellen, dass Nina ihr eigenes Rudel bildet. Auch wenn sie dann kein männlicher Alpha wäre, zuzutrauen wäre es ihr. Vor allem, dass sie dann Poh bei sich aufnimmt und auch einige Ausgestoßene.

  Nun noch einmal zurück zum Internat … Immerhin kann man es mit einem gleichsetzen, auch wenn in einem Internat niemand auf diese Weise bestraft wird.

Es gibt eine Sache, die frage ich mich noch in dem Manga. Deutlich zu sehen waren zu Beginn kleine Kinder – etwa sieben Jahre alt – aber die sind dann weitestgehend verschwunden. Denn später wird erklärt, dass sie in drei Klassen unterteilt sind. Es gibt die weiße Klasse des Schülerrats und deren Anwärter, die … darin sind die Normalos und die schwarze Klasse, alle schwarzen Schafe tummeln sich dort, in der auch Nina ist. Sind die Kinder noch im Kindergarten oder in blau, gelb, rot unterteilt?

Wie ihr sehen könnt, der Manga wirft schon einige Fragen auf. Ob er was für euch ist, müsst ihr natürlich auch selbst entscheiden. Doch ich muss sagen, nach meine wunderbaren Brüder, Ai startet durch und was es in letzter Zeit nicht alles gab, ist es wieder ein gelungener Shojo Manga.

  Und was wäre ein Shojo Manga natürlich ohne Shoco Card? Ein Manga ohne Shoco Card. Gut, darüber schütteln wir den Kopf. Natürlich hat Beasts of Abigale eine Shoco Card für die Erstauflage bekommen und sie sieht ganz ok aus. Sie haut mich jetzt nicht so vom Hocker wie die von Ein Freund für Nanoka, ist aber auch nicht so übel wie die von Citrus (nur meine Meinung). Ich hole mir die Mangas aber auch nicht speziell deswegen, es ist ein nettes Gimmick, mehr nicht 😉

Auf den zweiten Band bin ich doch recht gespannt darauf. Immerhin fällt mir sehr viel dazu ein und ich möchte meine Theorien verfeinern oder über den Haufen werfen 😉

Da der Manga allerdings 2015 heraus kam und erst drei Bände existieren, hoffe ich, dass keine Lücken entstehen werden. Ich bleibe einfach mal gespannt und wir können gerne diskutieren 😉
