I really wish Good Witch didn’t write Gwen Harrison (George’s second wife) off in the series. They don’t even mention her at all! Not sure if the actress had some scheduling conflicts when it came to reprising her role, but they just play it off like she never even existed, which is a shame.

I actually have an AU fic in mind where she’s present in the series and helps Abigail run her flower shop, because let’s be honest, those two would probably get along well, considering she has experience working with flowers and could definitely give Abby some pointers. Maybe even sorta have a mentor-mentee relationship at that. :)

Whatever happed to Gwen’s nursery, however, shall remain a mystery…XD

Which Witch? 

This moment in "Donnie vs. Witch Town" has repeatedly caught my notice, and I’ve now recovered enough to break it down! 

First off, here’s the list verbatim:

Unfamiliar names plus cursive plus a lack of high-quality stills meant decoding this took a little longer than expected.

I have attempted to minimize spoilers for the mentioned horror movies when possible, but in pursuing two contradictory goals, I have accomplished both imperfectly. C'est la vie!

Please note: I am by no means a film buff, so feel free to add any relevant context! 

Oh, the Horror . . . [films]!

"Suzy Bannion" would be a reference to the 1977 film Suspiria in which Suzy, a ballet student, finds herself investigating a supernatural coven of witches.

"Heather Donahue" is a homage to the 1999 "found footage" movie The Blair Witch Project*, wherein three student filmmakers investigate a legend of a witch in the woods.

"Nancy Downs", from the 1996 R-rated film The Craft, is one of a trio of students rumored to be dabbling in witchcraft.

"Minnie Castevet", on the other hand, hails from the dark 1968 film Rosemary’s Baby (based on the book by Ira Levin), wherein Minnie’s character is suspected of being a member of a coven. 

"Katia Vajda", originates from the 1960 film Black Sunday, (loosely based on Nikolai Gogol’s short story "Viy"). Katia was accused of being a vampiric witch and executed by her brother—but that isn’t the end of her story.

"Miss Anjelica Ernst" simultaneously references Roald Dahl’s 1973 novel The Witches and its 1990 film adaptation of the same name. One member of the notorious child-hating coven is the Grand High Witch, Eva Ernst, who was portrayed by Anjelica Huston on the big screen.

"Samantha Stephens" lives the life of a "good witch" in the 1964 television series Bewitched.

Special Bonus!

"Abigail the Good", founder of Witch Town, may be an allusion to the character "Abigail Pershing" from the 2015 television show Good Witch. 

I’ll go ahead and credit my dad as my research assistant; he described these references as "deep cuts".

BACKSTORY

Abigail is the daughter of Arthur Pershing and the late Patricia Merriwick. She is the maternal cousin of Cassie Nightingale, Joy Harper, and Grace Russell, and a descendant of the Merriwick line.

Like most Merriwick women, Abigail possesses unique gifts, which she uses to coyly help people realize their full potential; her methods, however, are notably more elusive than her cousin's. Her guarded persona often affects how she delivers advice or presents her gifts, as opposed to Cassie's open-book personality.

Abigail originally moved to Middleton to enact revenge on her cousin after learning that the Merriwick's had property there. She initially feuded with Cassie and resorted to dark magic to get her way. She disliked the small town and refused to partake in events. After learning the truth about Cassie's past, the pair formed a friendship. Abigail befriended Cassie step-daughter, Lori, and they began a mischievous friendship. She would eventually move into Grey House where she grew close to Grace, Cassie's daughter.

Now, Abigail owns her own business, Abigail's Flowers and Chocolates. She also helps her cousin run Grey House Bed & Breakfast and had a brief stint as the Mayor of Middleton. Abigail and her ex-fiancé Donovan Davenport were entangled in the centuries-old Merriwick-Davenport Curse. Despite breaking the curse, their relationship ends when they realize neither of them will put their relationship first. Vying for a change of scenery, Abigail leaves Middleton to travel Tuscany, and is contemplating the permanence of her travels.

Abigail grew up in Greenfield and was primarily raised by her single mother. Abigail's father, Arthur, left them in 1999 when she was thirteen and travelled all around the world on business. Abigail's mother was ill and wrote to Cassie's parents asking them for help. They never responded, and a year after her father left, Abigail's mother died and Abigail went into foster care. In season 7, Abigail mentions that she is a Taurus.

She remained bitter over the fact that Cassie's parents never helped her mother and clung to the idea of making it out of foster care one day. She was placed into a foster family presumably in Greenfield, that was loving and kind, but they had little-to-no money. Instead of going to homecoming, Abigail made corsages and sold them to the girls who did go so she could afford to buy a prom dress for later in the year. Her foster parents purchased her a bike and took care of her, however, Abigail dreamed of leaving the home.

Abigail moved out of the home when she turned eighteen, only taking a few suitcases with her. The box of mementos that she had kept over the years was left at the last foster home when she moved out. She went to college and got a job in advertising, quickly moving up the ladder in the company and made partner. Years later, Abigail discovered that her remaining family was living in Middleton, after Lori Russell contacted her. Abigail decided to travel to the town to meet them - especially after learning she was behind in her rent. Cassie invited Abigail to stay with her and her family at Grey House, an invite that Abigail graciously accepted.

After bonding with Cassie and the rest of her family, Abigail decided to stay in Middleton while the sale of her company was going through. She was especially close to her youngest cousin, Cassie's daughter, Grace. Years later, Abigail opened her store called Abigail's Flowers and Chocolates and gradually became a prominent member in Middleton society.

One of things I really admire about Good Witch is how when the franchise started whether it be the movies or TV show, a lot of the characters were shall we say "weren't their best selves" when it all began (a kinder way of saying how they were complete JERKS).

But it's amazing how eventually by the time the series ended, they all became better people and even better version of themselves. Prime examples being Martha Tinsdale, Abigail Pershing, Nick Radford and dare I say even... Sam Radford.
