Aberfeldy 12 - An Aromatic Adventure for the Tastebuds
In the twilight of my explorations among the amber elixirs, I find myself drawn inexorably to the promise held within an unfamiliar distillery’s offering—an unwritten narrative concealed within each crystalline droplet. Ah, the allure of uncharted territories, the tantalizing prospects of encountering a hitherto undiscovered gem that might, with a sip, become an indelible favorite. Indeed, the…

Release: January 5, 2024
Lyrics:
Oh, my love said to me, "Will you meet me by the sea?
You can kiss me underneath the misty moon"
She is stunning, she is pretty, she's as warm as amber whisky
And as bonny as a heather on the hill (oh, my love)
When I was a young boy, my mother said to me
"Find yourself a pretty lass, don't take her love for free"
From fields of Aberfeldy to the shores of Loch Maree
I know that she's the only one for me
Oh, my love said to me, "Will you meet me by the sea?
You can kiss me underneath the misty moon"
She is stunning, she is pretty, she's as warm as amber whisky
And as bonny as a heather on the hill
Oh, my love
She is stunning, she is pretty, she's as warm as amber whisky
And as bonny as a heather on the hill
She was dancing by the fire as a piper played a tune
She wrapped her arms around me, and she asked, "Are you my groom?"
A dram of amber whisky and a twinkle in her eye
We danced beneath the Caledonia sky
Oh, my love said to me, "Will you meet me by the sea?
You can kiss me underneath the misty moon"
She is stunning, she is pretty, she's as warm as amber whisky
And as bonny as a heather on the hill
Oh, my love
Oh, my love
Songwriter:
She is stunning, she is pretty, she's as warm as amber whisky
And as bonny as a heather on the hill

‘-‘ (Subtract) Tracklisting: 1. Boat 2. Salt Water 3. Eyes Closed 4. Life Goes On 5. Dusty 6. End Of Youth 7. Colourblind 8. Curtains 9. Borderline 10. Spark 11. Vega 12. Sycamore 13. No Strings 14. A City Cruise of Cocktails -  Flavour Blaster
Five Intoxicating Cocktail Bars in Five Minutes
This is your five minute guide to five great cocktail bars in the world’s best cities.
If you’re the kind of person who hops around on a plane with little time to research the local hotspots, this is the guide for you. If you’re heading for a stopover or stay in France, Mexico, Italy, Lebanon or Rio, you need a quick sundowner and tasty treat, we’ve got your back.
1. Paris
Little Red Door
Find the red door in the delightful, central Paris district of Marais to enter into the cosy yet cosmopolitan Little Red Door. Little Red Door pushes the cocktail menu envelope, reinventing communication, design, style and taste. Their latest menu, Flourish, builds on the bar's overarching concept of 'playfully pushing boundaries.' It is all about farm-to-glass using sustainable, eco-friendly flavour wizardry to create new cocktails. They don't take reservations, simply go and give the Little Red Door a knock.
Must Try Cocktail: Hops
Refreshing and drinkable, their house-made soda features the elegant and delicate bitterness of hops. It’s then combined with Floc de Gascogne and Roger Groult cider brandy for those looking for floral, fresh, and green notes in a sparkling and subtly sour cocktail.
 2. Mexico City
LicoreríaLimantour
LicoreríaLimantour is a Mexico City institution. Named The Best Bar in North America for the second consecutive year and Rémy Martin Legend of The List in 2022 (50 Best Bars), it is both a hyper-local and international superstar. It's busy every day of the week, the staff are friendly, efficient and well trained, their drinks are to-die-for, and the atmosphere is nothing short of intoxicating. It's the kind of place that gets everything right.
Must Try Cocktail: Margarita al Pastor
A Margarita made from tequila blanco, orange liqueur, house-made taco mix (mint, basil, chilli, agave and pineapple juice), lime juice, and coriander salt. The Margarita al Pastor is a take on tacos al pastor, traditionally served with roast pineapple and fresh coriander/cilantro that is now a modern classic in its own right.
 3. Rome
Drink Kong
Not your average Via Veneto Dolce Vita Rome hotspot, Drink Kong is a 70s futurism, King Kong and Japanese-influenced nightclub-dark, neon-lit bar set between the Stazione Termini and the Colosseum. This hopelessly hip cocktail bar has some serious cocktail chops, though. Their new menu, Perimetro, launched in 2022, uses mood and instinct to create taste profiles and their Japanese bar has visiting cocktail royalty for intimate tastings.
Must Try Cocktail: Ryuzo
The Ryuzo is an exotic whiskey drink inspired by the excellent Godfather cocktail. It's a beautiful blend of Aberfeldy 12 yo Scotch and Disaronno Amaretto with house-made pineapple and date cordial.
 4. Rio
Liz Cocktail & Co
Expect high-quality food as well as a quintessential cocktail list at this Parisian Brasserie-style restaurant in the centre of Rio. Order oysters on the half shell with the house smoked chilli sauce, and choose from any of the exquisite cocktails twisted from 1920's style European classics, American Tiki cocktails and the all-important national drink, the Caipirinha.
Must Try Cocktail: Between the Tropics
A blend of golden rum and local cachaça with pineapple, lime and the retro Tiki cocktail syrup Fassionola.
 5. Beirut
Anise
You'll have tried Italian sambuca, Greek ouzo, Turkish raki, Swiss absinthe or French pastis, but how about Lebanon's national drink, the aniseed-based arak? Arak precedes them all. Those who know their distilling history will know it is from Arabic that we get the word 'alembic' from 'al ambic' and 'alcohol' from ‘al cohol’ and that arak evolved from the Arab invention of alembic distillation in the 12th century.
If you're in the market to learn more about Lebanon's national drink, Anise is the place to go. There are also classic cocktails available if you decide that anise is not for you, and the music is worth a trip in itself. It's warm, friendly, and authentic; "a mash-up between a speakeasy and your grandmother's living room" - The New York Post.
Must Try Cocktail: Anise Bar's House Arak
Served traditionally, with 1/3 Arak and 2/3s water, with fresh ice. And if anise is not your gig, order a Vieux Carré instead.
If you know you want a Flavour Blaster cocktail then head to our 'Find a Bar’ map and get searching!

Hey guys! How's it going?🙂. . It's been a very busy week for me so this is my first post of the week but it's a new review 😉🥃. . For this week's review we have an affordable Highland single malt, it's the Aberfeldy 12yo! 🙂🥃. . This classic Scottish single malt Aberfeldy 12 Years with a fruity aroma, complete and refined, enriched with notes of honey and spices, is part of the Dewar family of scotch. Distilled in the Highlands and aged in ex-bourbon barrels, Aberfeldy 12 Years is known as a sweet single malt with a rich texture and ample flavor. Although the red squirrel no longer appears on the label, the new elegant design in black and gold-rose tones perfectly completes its intense and at the same time delicate aroma. . Here is my review:. . Nose: Subtle, flavourful and fruity, with discreet smoky accents. . Palate: The delicacy of this sweet single malt, with notes of black grass, honey and spices is appreciated by whiskey lovers. . Finish: Slightly citrusy, dominated by smoky accents and a hint of vanilla. . Color: Amber gold. . All in all it's a nice single malt, not complex but it won't break the bank either 😄. . This will make a very nice daily sipper for me 😉. . How about you? Have you tried this one yet? What did you think of it?🙂. . What's in your glass this evening?🥃. . Cheers guys and have a great weekend!🥃✨🥃. . #scottishwhisky #whisky #aberfeldy #aberfeldy12 #aberfeldywhisky #aberfeldydistillery #whiskey #scotch #firewaterxo #scotchwhisky #whiskyporn #whiskygram #whiskybar #bottle #drinks #scotland #friday #tgif #weekend #weekendvibes #highlandmalt #highlandwhisky #cigar #cubancigar #cigarlover #cigarporn #whiskyparty #cheers #romania #cluj (at Cluj-Napoca) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGaQ-ABsnR5/?igshid=1je3r3g4lbwgb

The GreatDrams Review of 2019
let’s begin
Welcome to The GreatDrams Review of 2019, a time for me to have a swift light hearted reflection of the year that was and my personal highlights of the year.
Well what a year it has been; Boris Johnson became Prime Minister – and royally wasted everyone’s time and energy, Brexit is still a thing and is still polluting our lives on an hourly basis, my beloved Liverpool FC won the Champions League and only narrowly lost out on the Premiership – something I hope they can rectify this year, our boy Archie has continued to grow into a fantastically energetic boy who loves being awake early and not giving us a break from his Duracell-like energy levels, our village – Poynton – flooded again which was quite disconcerting and the world, of course, is even more fractured than it was last year.
Crazy to even start reflecting on most of the above, but thankfully I only need to reflect on GreatDrams, and of course what’s been going on in whisky.
I say it every year, but this year has been amongst my busiest;
270,000 + GreatDrams readers this year
94k followers across social media and email
8,960 (approx) samples of our products given out at events to thirsty whisky drinkers
1,825 bottles of GreatDrams limited edition Scotch whisky sold to our awesome customers
1,510 articles now on GreatDrams (including a load scheduled for future publishing)
133 hours airborne on planes to presentations and meetings (that’s over five and a half actual days in the air…)
90 hours on trains to meetings (that’s nearly 4 full days spend on trains…)
87 events including Makers Markets and Pub in the Park promoting and selling the GreatDrams independently bottled whiskies
46 trains to meetings in London
32 flights to distilleries and meetings in six countries (India, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, USA and China)
18 distilleries visited across Scotland, Ireland, India, Kentucky
11 casks bought for our independent bottling programme
15 events attended (lower than usual due to hectic consulting schedule and family life)
5 whisky shows and festivals attended
4 publications written for including Whisky Magazine and Drinks International
4 award wins – Double Gold Star for our Girvan 11 Year Old at the Great Taste Awards 2019, Gold Star for our Craigellachie 11 Year Old at the Great Taste Awards 2019, Drinks Producer of the Year at the Cheshire Food & Drink Awards and Best Online Spirits Resource (second year in a row)
4 GreatDrams independently bottled whiskies, BenRiach 5 Year Old, Girvan 11 Year Old (which scored 91.5 in the 2020 Whisky Bible), our Christmas 2019 Limited Edition Blended Scotch Whisky and our Glentauchers 10 Year Old, available here
Countless whiskies tried, enjoyed and commented on.
Some particular highlights
Meeting so many really passionate whisky drinkers at the events we have been doing with our own independently bottled whiskies, hearing such great feedback and seeing the bottles fly off the shelves – our Christmas limited edition especially as it sold out before we even got to the 10th November!
Getting to visit India and Delhi for the first time – a place that can only be described as ‘synchronised chaos’
Visiting Kentucky again, albeit briefly (one day!) was superb
Visiting China twice in twelve weeks was quite intense… I know Shanghai surprisingly well now
Spending time with so many icons of the whisky world including, but not limited to Dr. Bill Lumsden, Richard Patterson, John McCheyne, Fraser Campbell, Stephanie Macleod, Ewan Gunn, Stephen Rankin, Billy Leighton and Brian Nation
In whisky I was fortunate to try some incredible whiskies (in the order in which I remembered them or tried them, not preference);

Along with all these stunning whiskies and a very busy year, we have seen Scotch exports up, volumes up and huge investment into new and expanding distillery operations throughout Scotland and Ireland in particular, with many new distilleries opening up in England too.
2020 looks to be another busy year with many new distilleries having spirit old enough to start releasing their first bottlings after three or more years of patience, and I’m sure a degree of nervous anticipation.
Thanks for reading, following, liking, Tweeting, Facebooking, Instagramming and tagging GreatDrams across the web this year, I’ve had a blast and it’s been so lovely to help so many GreatDrammers with their whisky choices and to meet a fair few of you at events around the UK over the last twelve months.
As always, please do send me pics of your whisky exploration, or tag me in festivities so I can share with the wider GreatDrams Network and please also keep sending your feedback, questions and comments to me, I reply to every single email I get sent; [email protected].

A Scotch Primer Perhaps...
I’ve been getting  a lot of inquiries recently about this storied spirit. Personally I’ma  bourbon man, but every once in while I am known to indulge to indulge in my Uncle’s favorite go-to tipple.
So let’s get started...
Firstly, to be called “Scotch” it must be made and bottled in Scotland, be a minimum of 40%abv (alcohol by volume, a measurement of the amount of alcohol present in the liquid) and be matured for at least three years in Oak Casks.
Also, Scotch whisky, as well as Japanese and Canadian varities, does not use an ‘e’ in its spelling. Whiskey from America and Ireland however does. The best way to remember is that countries with an ‘e’ in their name use an ‘e’ in their spelling of whiskey.
There are five main types of Scotch whisky. These are defined as:
Single malt – the product of a single distillery made from a mash of malted barley.
Single grain – the product of a single distillery made from a mash of grains other than malted barley.
Blended malt – a blend of two or more single malt Scotch whiskies.
Blended grain – a blend of two or more single grain Scotch whiskies.
Blended Scotch – a blend of single grain and single malt whiskies.
Scotland is sub-divided into five traditional regions in terms of whisky production (as recognized by the Scotch Whisky Association).
Lowland – such as Auchentoshan and Bladnoch tend to be light and floral.
Highland – such Aberfeldy, Dalmore and Glenmorangie – a large region and a diverse flavor profile.
Speyside – such as Glenfiddich and The Glenlivet tend to be honeyed, fruity and light.
Islay – such as Lagavulin, Ardbeg and Laphroig tend to be smoky and phenolic and peaty.
Campbeltown – such as Springbank and Glen Scotia tend to be peaty, briny and powerful.
Most of the regional differences come about purely as a result of the varying topography and geography of Scotland. The best example of this is the heavily peated and phenolic style of whisky produced by the Islay distilleries. This character simply came about as the only fuel they had to burn in the distilleries’ maltings was peat, which gives it that unique flavor.
When tasting, I find a few drops of water, or a slow melting ice cube does wonders to open up the flavors.
Here are 5 to start with...
1. Glenmorangie (10 Year Old)
Its smooth texture and vanilla character makes this old-school dram a perfect introduction to Scotch whisky’s rich/delicate flavor camp.
2. Glenlivet (12 Year Old)
The best thing about the Speyside Glenlivet 12 is that while delicious on its own, it mixes beautifully in cocktails.
3. Chivas Regal (12 Year Old)
For many newcomers to Scotch whisky, the rich, complex character of a single malt can overwhelm the palate and intimidate the senses, which is why blended whiskies may be the way to go. I love this Scotch.
4. Balvenie Doublewood (12 Year Old)
Scotch whisky takes much of its character from the barrel it’s been matured in, so the honey, vanilla and milk chocolate flavors derived from the ex-Bourbon barrels combine with cinnamon, stewed orchard fruit and a subtle nuttiness from the ex-Sherry casks for a well-balanced, smooth yet indulgent dram.
5. Johnnie Walker Black Label
Not quite ready for the single malts but looking for a smooth blended Scotch with a big personality? Johnnie Walker, the biggest-selling Scotch whisky in the world, has a range of sophisticated blends to suit every palate. The Black Label delivers richness and complexity with a smoothness that will appeal to new whisky drinkers. I always keep a bottle on hand.
So... there it is.. my Scotch primer... a bit long to be sure, but straight forward and not a lot of fluff.
Cheers!

Aberfeldy 12 Y.O.
John Dewar was born in poverty in 1805 near the Highland village of Aberfeldy. He went on to become a successful businessman with a thriving whisky blending business, John Dewar & Sons. Those sons took over the business, and in the 1890s, decided to build a distillery to provide fillings for their house blends. Perhaps to honor their father, they chose to build a few miles from his birthplace; thus was Aberfeldy born. The distillery became part of the huge DCL portfolio in the first quarter of the 20th century; a 12 year old bottling of Aberfeldy was issued in the flora and fauna range, but it is now rare and highly sought, fetching sizable sums at auction. When DCL formed Diageo, it was forced to divest of Aberfeldy and several other malt distillers, so those facilities were sold to Bacardi, along with the Dewar’s blend. Bacardi has marketed limited quantities of Aberfeldy as a single malt (in 12 and 21 year old iterations) for many years; in recent years, the single malt range has been revamped and expanded as part of Bacardi’s “Last Great Malts of Scotland” range alongside stablemates Aultmore, Macduff (Deveron), Royal Brackla, and Craigellachie.
Aberfeldy 12 Y.O. (older bottling) 40% abv
Nose: Crisp. Root beer or Dr. Pepper. Apples. Almost a parmesan note. Some nuts—cashew or almonds, or perhaps almond liqueur. Milk chocolate truffles. On the whole rather sweet and mild. A slight mineral note. Body: Firm, medium. Slightly chewy. Palate: Mild and balanced. Sponge cake, milk chocolate, oak, ripe plum, heather and mild honey; creamy. There’s just a bit of smoke and tobacco as it heads toward the finish. Finish: Restrained, drying and short, with a mild note of tobacco. Score: 84/100 Price: This bottling is discontinued, but I suspect the newer versions are similar; they usually run in the $30-40 range. Availability: Wide; most specialty liquor stores carry it, and you might even find some somewhere like Costco.  Comment:  A very mild, easy going, balanced whisky—very nice, but not a huge personality.
