Marion Patterson nee Chalmers, was born on August 26th 1911 in Aberdeen.
Marions parents emigrated to canade in 1919, where she lived for 20 years, in August 1939, she, her husband Guthrie Patterson, (who hailed from Dundee,) and their son Douglas moved back to Aberdeen.
War broke out shortly after moving back to Aberdeen, Scotland in 1939, and Marion enlisted as an ambulance driver. She really enjoyed her job and attended classes when not on duty to become more proficient in her work. She became a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star and belonged to the White Shrine. Marion was Queen in the order of the White Shrine for two years and was also Prelate in the Order of the Amaranth for a number of years. In the summer of 1942, an emergency bulletin was issued, "All Canadian children and parents wishing to return to Canada, should apply to a steamship office in Glasgow." Marion did not think the War would last very long, but, the thought of taking Douglas to the shelter every night, effects on his schooling and his health, made her decide to send him to her mother in Toronto. She wanted to stay with the ambulance service until the War was over so that she and her husband could return to Toronto together. The next day, two Red Cross ships carrying Canadian children and 200 wounded, were torpedoed in the Glasgow harbour. Her son Douglas was not injured. The damaged ships returned to Glasgow for 10 days for repair and eventually made their way safely to Toronto.
The War raged on, the damage to Aberdeen was indescribable and times were bleak. Marion decided to open her own Hairdressing salon, which had been a dream of hers for many years. She did this with enthusiasm and was very happy to be working at hairdressing again after such a long while. Marion wanted to contribute in some way and in October of 1942, became a Senior Fire Guard for the Civil Defence in Aberdeen, Scotland. One day, while on duty, Marion was using a stirrup pump to extinguish a burning building on South Market Street, when she heard cries for help coming from the building. With stirrup pump in hand, she could see a way to start burrowing under some walls that had collapsed. It took quite some time, but she managed to get to the sailor who was trapped below. Unfortunately, his legs were trapped under some timber beams and Marion could not free him. He was too weak to help. She looked around and found some loose pieces of wood and by pushing on the loose pieces, had enough leverage to partially lift the timber. At that point, the sailor was able to wiggle himself loose. Marion kept calling above for help and finally a rope was lowered through the damaged walls. She was able to tie the rope around the sailor's waist and with help got him out of the burning building. They were both exhausted, but safe. One minute after escaping from the building, it collapsed.
The incident was written up in the London Gazzette on December 4, 1942. Marion was invited to attend at Buckingham Palace on the 12th of February 1943 to receive a presentation of the George Medal by King George VI. During the presentation, it was announced that Marion was the first street Fire Guard to win a medal while engaged in fire duties. As part of the award, Marion was also selected for portraiture in a special section of the National Gallery of England set aside for heroes and heroines of the blitz. She was also invited to be a guest at Balmoral Castle so as to be able to visit at any time she wished, for the remainder of her life. The famous Scots Artist, Mr. Robert Sivell, R.S.A. had been commissioned by King George VI to paint Marion's portrait. Mr. Sivell worked at the Aberdeen College of Art and Marion was scheduled to meet with him for several sittings.
Marion kept the portrait a secret from her family because it came as such a surprise to her; she wanted it to be a big surprise to them too. She was able to dash away from her hairdressing shop to attend special sittings for the portrait. When it was finally completed, Marion again attended Buckingham Place for the presentation. The original painting was hung in the National Gallery, London, England and was shown in a Special Wing for Heroes and Heroines of the 1939-1945 War. Her portrait had the honour of hanging between General Eisenhower and General Montgomery. Two replicas were also created and a sketch in black and white. One replica is in the Ottawa, Ontario War Museum in Canada and was part of the Women at War Display in 1985. The black and white sketch was sent to the Gallery in Aberdeen, Scotland. Just under 40 women in UK were awarded the UK George Medal. Marion was awarded another 5 medals during WWII for her actions as a Civil Defence Senior Fire Guard. Her medals are on display at the Aberdeen Art Gallery having been purchased in 2005 by the Aberdeen City Council and the Friends of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums. They form part of the Artists at War display.
Marion moved back to Toronto after the war where she worked as a hairdresser and lived with her family until her death. She enjoyed traveling and was able to make many trips to Scotland and England. She faced many challenges throughout her life during and after the war, including breast cancer in 1975, which she also battled and conquered. She had three grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. She is shown below in August of 1982 with husband Guthrie and great grandson Darryl James Wannamaker.

Planning a trip to Aberdeen? Whether you're here for business or leisure, finding the right place to stay can make all the difference. Short term lets are becoming the go-to option for many visitors, offering the flexibility, comfort, and home-like feel that hotels often lack. From modern city center apartments to cozy suburban homes, Aberdeen’s short term rental market has something for everyone. Here’s everything you need to know to choose the perfect short term let for your stay in this beautiful Scottish city.
Tumblr media
Variety of Options
Aberdeen's short term let market is diverse, offering a wide range of properties to suit different needs and preferences. From modern apartments in the city center to cozy cottages in more residential areas, there's something for everyone. Whether you’re traveling alone, with a partner, or with your family, you can find a property that fits your requirements. Some properties even cater to specific needs, such as pet-friendly accommodations or homes with disability access.
Flexibility and Convenience
One of the main advantages of short term lets is the flexibility they offer. Unlike hotels, which often have strict check-in and check-out times, many short term lets provide more lenient policies. This can be particularly beneficial if you have a late arrival or an early departure. Additionally, short term lets often come with fully equipped kitchens, allowing you to prepare your own meals and maintain a more flexible schedule during your stay.
Cost-Effective
Short term lets can be a more cost-effective option, especially for longer stays. While the nightly rate may be comparable to a hotel, the additional amenities such as kitchen facilities can save you money on dining out. Many short term lets offer discounts for extended stays, making them an economical choice for those planning to stay in Aberdeen for several weeks or months.
Home-Like Comfort
One of the biggest draws of short term lets is the home-like comfort they provide. Unlike the often impersonal nature of hotel rooms, short term lets offer a more personal and cozy environment. You’ll have more space to relax, work, and entertain guests. Properties typically include separate living and sleeping areas, which can enhance your comfort and productivity.
Location Matters
Aberdeen's short term lets are spread across various neighborhoods, each offering its own unique charm and convenience. If you want to be in the heart of the action, look for properties in the city center, close to major attractions, restaurants, and shops. For a quieter stay, consider areas like Old Aberdeen or Ferryhill, which offer a more residential feel while still being within easy reach of the city’s amenities.
Reliable Providers
When choosing a short term let, it’s important to book through a reputable provider to ensure quality and reliability. Look for providers with positive reviews and a proven track record. Reliable providers will offer well-maintained properties and responsive customer service to address any issues that may arise during your stay.
Legal and Safety Considerations
Ensure that the short term let complies with local regulations and safety standards. Reputable providers will follow all necessary legal requirements and provide properties that meet safety standards, including working smoke alarms, secure locks, and clear emergency procedures.
For a hassle-free and enjoyable stay in Aberdeen, consider booking your short term let with Grampian Lettings Ltd. Which Sales Training Is Most Often Utilized?
In the dynamic realm of modern commerce, where competition is fierce and markets ever-evolving, salesmanship stands as an indispensable pillar of success. Within this domain, the significance of effective sales training cannot be overstated. Businesses, large and small, are constantly seeking ways to enhance the skills of their sales teams, equipping them with the tools necessary to navigate the intricacies of the contemporary market landscape. Amidst this quest for excellence, numerous sales training companies have emerged, each offering their unique methodologies and approaches. But which among them reigns supreme in terms of adoption and utilization?
Tumblr media
Delving into the realm of sales training companies, one finds a plethora of options, each vying for attention and acclaim. However, certain names consistently surface in conversations regarding the most frequently utilized sales training programs. Foremost among these is the renowned Dale Carnegie Training, a stalwart in the realm of professional development for over a century. With its focus on interpersonal skills, communication techniques, and leadership development, Dale Carnegie Training has left an indelible mark on the sales training landscape.
Another heavyweight in the arena of sales training companies is Sandler Training, renowned for its systematic approach to sales processes and its emphasis on psychology-based selling techniques. Boasting a global network of trainers and a wealth of resources, Sandler Training has garnered widespread recognition for its effectiveness in transforming sales teams into high-performing entities.
As we traverse further into the realm of sales training companies, the name of The Brooks Group emerges prominently. Specializing in sales training solutions tailored to diverse industries, The Brooks Group prides itself on its data-driven methodologies and its focus on measurable results. With a client roster spanning Fortune 500 companies to small enterprises, The Brooks Group stands as a testament to the efficacy of its sales training programs.
The list of prominent sales training companies extends further to include the likes of Richardson Sales Performance, renowned for its consultative selling approach, and Miller Heiman Group, acclaimed for its strategic selling methodologies. Each of these entities brings its unique blend of expertise and innovation to the forefront, catering to the diverse needs of businesses across industries.
However, amidst the abundance of options, one may wonder: what sets these sales training companies apart? The answer lies in their respective methodologies, delivery formats, and the results they deliver. Dale Carnegie Training, for instance, emphasizes the human element of salesmanship, focusing on building rapport, fostering trust, and honing interpersonal skills. Sandler Training, on the other hand, adopts a systematic approach rooted in psychology and behavioral science, guiding sales professionals through a structured process designed to uncover client needs and drive closing success.
Moreover, sales training companies often differentiate themselves through the range of services they offer. While some may focus solely on classroom-based training sessions, others provide a comprehensive suite of resources, including online courses, coaching programs, and digital learning platforms. This diversity of offerings allows businesses to select the sales training solution that best aligns with their unique requirements and learning preferences.
In the quest for quantifiable metrics, studies have sought to ascertain the efficacy of various sales training programs. According to a survey conducted by CSO Insights, companies that invest in comprehensive sales training programs experience a 28% increase in win rates. Furthermore, a study by the Aberdeen Group revealed that organizations with formalized sales training processes achieve 32% higher team quota attainment than those lacking such programs. These statistics underscore the tangible impact of sales training on organizational performance and revenue generation.
However, amidst the plethora of options, it is essential for businesses to exercise discernment in selecting the most suitable sales training company. As renowned author and motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once remarked, "The only thing worse than training employees and losing them is not training them and keeping them." In an era where talent acquisition and retention are paramount, investing in the development of sales professionals is not merely a strategic choice but a necessity for long-term success.
In conclusion, the realm of sales training companies encompasses a diverse array of options, each offering its unique blend of methodologies, expertise, and resources. From stalwarts like Dale Carnegie Training to innovative players like The Brooks Group, the landscape is replete with opportunities for businesses to elevate the skills of their sales teams. The right PPC strategy can propel your brand to the forefront of search engine results, driving targeted traffic and ensuring a measurable return on investment. In this article, we delve into the world of PPC advertising, exploring the significance of partnering with PPC Agencies in the UK and the criteria for selecting the perfect ally in your digital journey.
I. The Essence of PPC in the UK Digital Scene:
The UK, with its tech-savvy population and bustling digital economy, presents a thriving environment for online advertising. It's an avenue that not only ensures visibility but also provides quantifiable metrics for campaign success.
II. The Role of a PPC Agency:
Strategic Campaign Planning:
A PPC agency in the UK plays a pivotal role in strategic campaign planning. Understanding the UK market dynamics, consumer behaviour, and industry trends, they craft campaigns that align with business goals. From identifying target keywords to optimizing ad copy, strategic planning sets the stage for a successful PPC campaign.
Adaptability to UK Trends:
The UK's digital landscape is dynamic, with trends evolving rapidly. A proficient PPC agency stays abreast of these trends, ensuring that campaigns are adaptive and capitalize on emerging opportunities. Whether it's changes in consumer preferences or updates to search engine algorithms, adaptability is a cornerstone of effective PPC management.
Localized Content Creation:
Tailoring ad copy to resonate with the UK audience is crucial. PPC Agencies in Aberdeen understand the importance of localized content creation. Whether it's using British English or incorporating culturally relevant elements, crafting ad copy that connects with the local audience enhances the effectiveness of PPC campaigns.
Platform Expertise:
PPC extends beyond Google Ads, encompassing platforms like Bing Ads, social media advertising, and display networks. A proficient PPC agency in the UK possesses expertise across these platforms, strategically leveraging each to maximize the reach and impact of campaigns.
Data-Driven Decision Making:
Data is the heartbeat of PPC success. A top-notch PPC agency relies on data-driven decision-making processes. From analyzing click-through rates to monitoring conversion metrics, data insights guide campaign optimization for enhanced performance.
Transparent Reporting:
Transparency is paramount in a successful PPC partnership. A reputable PPC agency provides transparent reporting mechanisms, keeping clients informed about the performance of their campaigns. Cost-Effective Marketing:
With PPC, you pay only for actual clicks, making it a cost-effective marketing strategy. A PPC agency optimizes campaigns to ensure that every click is a valuable investment, delivering a higher return on ad spend.
Flexibility and Control:
PPC campaigns offer unparalleled flexibility and control. A PPC agency in the UK can swiftly adjust budgets, modify ad copy, and target specific audiences based on real-time performance data. This agility allows businesses to stay responsive to market dynamics.

2nd March 1938 saw the arrest by MI5 of Jessie Jordan, the Dundee hairdresser who would later be convicted as a German spy.
Jessie Jordan was part of a ring of Nazi spies and agitators who worked to undermine the Allies before and during World War II.
War widow Jessie Jordan worked as a hairdresser to support her family before remarrying and trying to make it as a singer and actress. But she became infamous for a performance of a different kind.
Jessie, along with Tory toff Archibald Ramsay, was part of a ring of Nazi spies and agitators who worked to undermine the Allies before and during World War  Two.
Jessie Jordan’s double life as a spy was exposed after her landlord found a map of Scotland’s military barracks in her handbag, with the hair stylist in the pay of German intelligence organisation Abwehr arrested on March 2, 1938.
Jordan was sentenced to four years in jail after admitting to sharing secrets of Scotland’s coastal defences with the German intelligence services.
At her trial in New York, the court heard the Fife depot was of first-class national importance to the defence services with the sketch of ‘very great value to the pilot of enemy bombing plane seeking out his objective,’ a report of the court proceedings said.
She met her first husband, Frederick Jordan, from Hamburg, while he worked as a waiter in Dundee. After marrying in 1912, she moved to Germany.
She was hired by Abwehr just before returning to Scotland in 1937. On her appointment, she wrote: “I was now approaching the most dangerous and exciting period of my life. I was about to become a spy in the interests of Germany. I did not take this step because I bore Britain any ill-will or had become pro-German. Nothing could be further from the truth. I only did it to oblige friends in Germany and because I felt it would afford some excitement ...”
Jordan told immigration officials that she returned to Scotland to track down details of her birth father given she needed an Ahnenpass, a certificate based on church records that demonstrated her family line contained no Jewish heritage. It was all lies.
At her trial, the extent of German intelligence gathering in the United States ahead of the outbreak of World War Two emerged. Jordan sold military information to Nazi German for two years and was the central figure in a major espionage ring stretching throughout Europe to New York and Washington.
Letters from operatives were received at the hairdressing salon in Dundee’s Kinloch Street, which she set up after returning to Scotland. Former salon owners Mary and John Curran became suspicious of her activities given Jordan was “unusually keen” to secure the shop, offering double the market value despite its downmarket address.
The Currans surreptitiously searched Jordan’s handbag: inside they found a map of Scotland on which the location of military barracks had been marked in pencil. They showed it to the police before slipping it back in place
At the Dundee salon, letters postmarked New York were discovered, some which contained requests for spy equipment, blank American passports and cash. All were to be routed via the Dundee hairdresser.
After her arrest, she was sent to Saughton Prison but transferred to Aberdeen at the outbreak of World War Two.
She was described as a “model prisoner” who busied herself with needlework. Released in 1941 she was interned again for the rest of the war before being deported. She died in Hamburg in 1954.

University of Aberdeen scientists fight back against global public health emergency
Following the declaration by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that antimicrobial resistance is one of the top global public health threats facing humanity, a 5-year long project is now underway to find the best and most effective forms of defence against this growing problem.
The UK Antimicrobial Registry (UKAR) study, led by Professor Gary Macfarlane from the University of Aberdeen, will incorporate information from hospitals across the UK to achieve a multi-stakeholder registry of antimicrobial agents.
Funded by the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the study will determine which antibiotics are the most effective and best able to control the threat of antimicrobial resistance.
Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, fungi and viruses mutate over time and no longer respond to medicines. This can make infections harder to treat and increases the spread of disease. One common example, MRSA, often labelled a ‘superbug’ is an example of a bacteria that has become resistant to commonly used antibiotics and as such proves difficult to treat and can lead to serious illness and even death.
The UKAR study will look at how effective eleven new-to-market antibiotics are; how well they work, how good they are at treating different infections and how they are currently being used in UK hospitals on infections that cannot currently be treated. The resulting registry will help doctors and scientists navigate the ever-changing microbial environment and keep the threat of antimicrobial resistance at bay.
Professor Macfarlane who is leading the project said: “Antimicrobial resistance is a real threat to our ability to treat common infections and is one that demands urgent attention.
"Currently available antibiotics are becoming less effective against some infections, so it is vital that we use them appropriately.
“The UK Antimicrobial Registry study will look at the effectiveness and safety of new antimicrobial medications which are used to stop the growth of micro-organisms that can cause disease.
“These medications are a vital part of modern medicine and include antibiotics (which target bacteria), antivirals (targeting viruses), and antifungals (targeting fungal infections).
“This work will help us find out how widely these medicines are used across the UK, why they are being prescribed, and how effective they are.”
Dr Noha El-Sakka, Consultant, Medical Microbiology and Virology at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary who is leading the NHS Grampian arm of the study added: “Antimicrobial resistance represents a global challenge and the need for new antimicrobial agents is becoming more and more essential.
“The UKAR study is an exciting project that will help address and shed light on the available new antimicrobial agents, and the clinical value of their use particularly in the context of limited available other option. This is much needed information, and data from the study is going to be an extremely valuable resource to help shape the strategy for management of infection in the future.”

Lesson 1: How do Cooperatives Empower Workers?
The cooperative emerged during the crisis and poverty led by workers during the industrial period in England in the 1800’s. A cooperative is an association of people with a common goal and united by their common interests and aspirations. They voluntarily come together to meet their needs in the community by contributing the capital they have accumulated, patronizing their own products and services, sharing in the benefits of their bond.
The industrial era was a time when the level of production in various factories in Europe increase rapidly, successively invented various types of machines that speed up the production and transportation of various objects. Although the number of factories in the city increased rapidly, wages remained low and working conditions were harsh. The work lasts from 10-16 hours a day. Even children and women work in disgusting conditions. As the people continued to evacuate, from villages to cities and factories, they also lost their ability to plant and provide for their own needs, so they began to rely on shops to sell the necessary products. As a result, investors became richer and workers become poorer.
Industrial revolution started in the 18th century in England. It changed the social and economic life of the people. The introduction of machines in factories caused misfortunes to many people who had depended mainly on weaving for their livelihood. The traditional industries were rendered unprofitable by other factories that utilized better machines and technology. Although there have been previous experiments and writings on this, Robert Owen and Dr. William King, who were also workers, were the first to establish a formal cooperative organization. 28 cotton factory workers from Rochdale, Northern England founded the first modern cooperative called the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society in 1844. Many of them have repeatedly fallen victim to merchant fraud, such as weight fraud or hence quality product sold by stores. They had a vision for a more equitable society and they were going to do it themselves. They came together and they decided to pool their resources and for over a year, they scrimped and saved what they could and they were determined to open their own store. So on December 21st, 1844, they pulled the boards off the windows of their storefront, they lit the lantern in the front window and they basically announced the world, “we are open for business”. They opened their store for only two nights a week. Within 3 months they expanded their selection to include tea and tobacco and the business had grown so much that it was open five days a week. They were soon known for providing high quality, unadulterated goods.
Cooperative movement began in Britain in the 19th century in response to the industrial revolution and the economic transformations that were threatening the livelihoods of many workers. They were earlier efforts by workers to form cooperatives. The shore porter’s society claims to be one of the world’s first cooperatives being established in Aberdeen Scotland in 1498. The concurrent labor and social movements and the issues they attempted to address describe the climate at the time. Cooperative banks or credit unions were invented in Germany in the mid-19th Century. By 1830, several hundred cooperatives had been formed. Some were initially successful, but most had failed by 1840. It was not until 1844 when a cooperative society established the “Rochdale Principles”, on which they ran their co-op, that the basis for development and growth of the modern cooperative movement was established.
The Cooperative Marketing Law (Act 2425) was enacted and approved on December 9, 1927. The rural credit associations were designed to help finance the efforts of the farmers for more production. Wherever rural credit associations were, cooperative marketing societies were also designed to be present. The apparent weakness of the rural credit cooperatives, however, failed the enthusiasm of farmers to organize themselves into cooperative marketing associations. By 1939 only 164 societies were actually organized with a total membership of around 5,000 farmers. With this number only 35 reported their sale of products to the Bureau of Commerce. The number of associations reporting indicated that only 20% of the organized associations were active.
In recognition of the strategic position occupied by our farmers in the social structure and economic development of the country, the Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act 821 in 1952. This law established a system of liberal credit which is specially designed to meet the needs of the small farmers. It also created an administrative agency known as the Agricultural Credit and Cooperative Financing Administration (ACCFA). To implement the great task of rural financing, four general and interrelated objectives of the law were set to assist small farmers in securing liberal credit, promote the effective groupings of farmers into cooperative associations, establish an orderly and systematic marketing machinery for, and controlled by the small farmers, and to place agriculture on a basis of economic equality with other industries.
The cooperative is responsible for the livelihoods of 3 billion people, helping them to improve their standard of living and dignity. People support cooperatives, and cooperatives support the people and the community, and you can see how this economy networking just keeps growing and building, and it has a measurable effect on poverty rates, quality of life, and social engagement cooperatives exist in nearly every sector of our economy.
