The Vow (2012)
My rating: 6/10
Better than I expected. Tatum and McAdams have really good chemistry, enough to overcome the movie's problems - like the somewhat uneven plotting, the one-dimensionally douchey romantic rival and general soap opera-ness of it all, or Channing Tatum's awful little straw hat. Also, you don't get a lot of romance movies where everybody actually respects each other's boundaries (which in and of itself is pretty fucked up honestly), so good on them for that.

Girls are taught a lot of stuff growing up. If a guy punches you he likes you. Never try to trim your own bangs and someday you will meet a wonderful guy and get your very own happy ending. Every movie we see, every story we're told implores us to wait for it, the third act twist, the unexpected declaration of love, the exception to the rule. But sometimes we're so focused on finding our happy ending we don't learn how to read the signs. How to tell from the ones who want us and the ones who don't, the ones who will stay and the ones who will leave.

Title: I Feel Pretty (2018)
Director: Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein
Starring: Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski, Rory Scovel, Aidy Bryant, Busy Philipps, Tom Hopper, Naomi Campbell, and Lauren Hutton
Brief Synopsis: A woman with low self-esteem wakes up after hitting her head and sees herself as the most beautiful girl in the world.  This changes how she interacts with her surroundings.
Review: I’ve never been a big fan of Amy Schumer and was actually interested in this movie.  The vague plot sounded like it could be very body positive and accepting and I had hopes of enjoying it.  There were some moments of humor but overall, it was a bit of a mess and the major jokes were bad.  I felt saddened by the fact that I could have really liked Ethan, Renee’s love interest, but all they did was make gay jokes at his expense.  I guess these movies always have to have some sort of offensive humor.  I did think Michelle Williams did a good job, but I had no belief she wouldn’t.  She’s a talented actress.  Her character could have been more than a high-pitched self-hating boss but I think Williams did as much as she could with Avery.  I hope one day we get a movie that truly is positive in the  way I was hoping this movie would be.  *Spoilers from now on* I think it’s disappointing that the movie’s message wasn’t to just love yourself for who you are but the change your personality. Although in a way it was body positive, it made fun of everybody’s personality.  What type of message was that?  Ethan had some traditionally feminine traits and he was mocked for it by his coworkers and by Renee.  Nothing was really resolved with Avery and her muttering about being a stupid bitch. Renee did stop treating her friends shitty but it wasn’t like she really learned anything.  I had a hard time finding the chemistry between Renee and Grant. His character was very basic and under developed.  At one point I thought Avery was asking Renee on a date and was trying to see if she was straight or not but I’m not sure what was with that whole situation.  The movie was a disappointment and I have learned my lesson.

I Feel Pretty (2018), Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein
For a film which essentially just utilizes SoulCycle’s literal mission statement to progress its plot and define its themes (“Our mission is to bring Soul to the people...”), the end result is surprisingly much more enjoyable and not (quite) nearly as eye-rolling as one may imagine, because while Amy Schumer certainly has her sometimes rightful critics, she and her impressive supporting cast (Michelle Williams + her baby voice!!!) carry this silly, juvenile film to a moderately “uplifting” (aka “totally obvious”) conclusion, encouraging women (yet again) to rediscover their childhood innocence and remember that it’s their beauty within which counts and ultimately plays the biggest role in how one chooses to express and carry themselves, which I guess is fine enough, even if the film doesn’t feel like ever once mentioning that sometimes that still won’t be enough...

I Feel Pretty (2018) dir. Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein. 7.1/10
About a girl who doesn’t think she deserves anything because she isn’t beautiful. She gets a head injury and all of a sudden sees herself as beautiful and her newfound confidence opens up new doors.
What an interesting concept of beauty standards. I really hate how much she hates herself though. Why is the world this way? Why must we hate ourselves so? This is real.
I feel like these opportunities won’t open up as easily even if I were that confident, but I sure as hell won’t be as unsatisfied with rejection.
I actually really like Avery and Ethan.
