'We were all as one': Mike McCartney on playing with Wings on McGear (1974)
SDE: So, how did you get on with the sessions with Paul, what was the working practice because obviously you wrote a lot of songs together, did you come in with lyrics and ideas? MM: He said, “right, now, the Eastmans have said to do an album [after they listened to the single Leave It and liked it], have you got enough stuff for an album?” I said, I’ve been writing for years, quietly in the background with my own ideas. With the Woman album that got me going and I kept going, so I’ve got lots of ideas for songs, but I was going to work and do another Woman album at some stage, you know, when I could afford it. So I had lots of ideas that I was going to do in the future, but I just couldn’t afford to do them. So I said, yes, I’ve got loads of stuff, it’s not finished. He said, “well, that’s great because we’ll work on it together. So, I’ve got Denny and you’ve got your drummer and we’ve got another guitarist which I’m thinking of, so what we’ll do is go into … down here in London, Abbey Road, is too expensive, and so that place you recorded the Woman thing, Strawberry [Studios, in Stockport], sounds great. So we’ll just go to there from our houses” – which were only three quarters of an hour away in Heswall on the Wirral – “and we’ll see what comes out”. So, that’s what we did, I had all these ideas, I said, right, here’s the lyrics for this one, and here’s the song for this… and we just worked on them together, with Denny. So, these things started to magically come together, with Gerry Conway and then Jimmy [McCulloch]. It was a labour of love, it wasn’t like a nine-to-five. With our kid, his business was always with love, with his chums, and then going into Wings. You don’t do things for sessions, you do it for the love and the communicate and spread the love. So, to work in an environments like that is so much freer and far more productive. I listened to this after 40 years, this McGear album, and I suddenly realised how important it is in terms of music – how relaxed, how together, how professional, how joyous, how unique it was. SDE: Did you get on well with Denny Laine and Jimmy McCulloch, were they a nice group? MM: We were all as one. I was like a member; I was a member of Wings for a bit! Because, you were all there for the same reasons, you were all there for the love of music, and so that is a very strong powerful concoction, and that’s what produces these songs that have longevity. They transcend all of the other stuff I did, all The Scaffold stuff, if you listen to it, the majority of it – unless it’s things like ‘Liverpool Lou’ which was Wings [anyway] – but all the Scaffold stuff is all manufactured, all session people, and so there’s very little … I mean, one good one, again was [1971 single] ‘Do the Albert’, we did that with Mooney [Keith Moon] on drums. We did that in EMI [Abbey Road] in studio one, where we did ‘Lily the Pink’. Mooney was there early morning, and I remember him lining up his stuff, his drums, his side drums, his bottle of brandy [laughs] this was in the morning… absolute magic.

This Month In History - September
What a month for landmark anniversaries! Here's some I'm raising a glass to:
Sept. 12, 1989: Pump released
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1989 Aerosmith' 10th album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 35th Pump!
Sept. 12, 2014: The Skeleton Twins opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2014, one of the best dysfunctional comedies of the 2010s opened. I was lucky enough to see it early on when it screened at the 2014 Independent Film Festival Boston, where my doc Life on the V: The Story of V66 was premiering. I was very proud to be in the same company as this film. It balanced sadness and humor delicately and both stars Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig swung it out of the park! Happy 10 TST!
Sept. 14, 2004: Funeral released
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2004, the debut album from Arcade Fire was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 20th Funeral!
Sept. 16, 1984: Miami Vice premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1984, possibly the greatest cop show of the 80s premiered on NBC. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 40th Miami Vice!
Sept. 19, 1984: Amadeus opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1984, Milos Forman's biopic masterpiece was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 40th Amadeus!

Tumblr media
In Sept. 2004, Green Day's best concept album was releasd. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 20th AI!
Sept. 24, 2004: Shaun of the Dead opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2004, the zombie comedy to end all zombie comedies was released. Director Edgar Wright's genius has always been in not trying to make a straight up spoof of genres he loves, but actually making a great movie in that genre that's also funny. As a zombie apocalypse takes over London, a slacker tries to survive it with his friends and girlfriend. It is a movie people still talk about and quote today. Got my copy on DVD! Happy 20th SOTD!
Sept. 25, 1984: Three's a Crowd premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1984, the spin-off that followed Three's Company premiered. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 40th TAC!
Sept. 25, 2009: Paranormal Activity opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 2009, one of the best found footage horror movies was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 15 PA!
Sept. 26, 1964: Gilligan's Island premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1964, one of the great 60s sitcoms premiered on CBS. A group of differing castaways all find themselves trapped on a desert island together. I used to love it as a kid, watching syndicated reruns. They never got off the island, but that was part of the fun. Happy 60th GI!
Sept. 26, 1969: Abbey Road released and The Brady Bunch premieres
On the same exact day in Sept. 1969, two historical pop culture moments occurred!
Tumblr media
First up, The Beatles' 11th studio album was released. There's always been a argument among Beatles fans about the final Beatles album: Abbey Road, the last one recorded, vs. Let It Be, the last one released. It is one of my personal favorites and I grew up with the vinyl. Here is my album review of the 2019 Super Deluxe Edition. Happy 55 Abbey Road!
Tumblr media
Next up, the family sitcom The Brady Bunch premiered on ABC-TV. The story of a blended family with six kids became the standard for TV families. The series was on from 1969-1974, but I got into it in syndicated reruns (much like Gilligan's Island). No matter what age you were you could relate to at least one of the Brady kids, i.e. Bobby when I was younger, then Peter, and later on Greg. When I was in college, actor Barry Williams spoke and signed copies of his book there too. Happy 55th Brady Bunch!
Sept. 26, 1984: It's Your Move premieres
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1984, one of the best short-lived sitcoms of the 80s premiered. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 40th IYM!
Sept. 27, 1994: Monster released
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1994, R.E.M.'s 9th album as released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 30th Monster!
Sept. 30, 1994: Ed Wood opens
Tumblr media
In Sept. 1994, one of the best Hollywood biopics was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 30th EW!

The Beatles’ Abbey Road Super Deluxe 50th Anniversary Mini-Review
Tumblr media
Format: Reissue, Studio Album, Long Play (LP)
Genre: Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Art Rock
Length: 2:12:25
Label: Apple Records, Capitol Records
Media Type: CD
Released Date: September 27, 2019
The final album from the legendary band The Beatles, Abbey Road needs no introduction. It’s a fantastic album, a classic, and some would argue the Beatles’ best. For the 50th anniversary of the album, Abbey Road got a new release with a new Stereo mix and up to two discs of outtakes, demos, and alternative takes. A couple of The Beatles’ previous albums (Sgt. Pepper, White Album) have got a similar treatment, and Abbey Road is the latest and probably the last. But with it having the least of the three re-releases, does the Super Deluxe edition of Abbey Road fall short or is it a concise and tight package of one of the most diverse and polished albums in the Beatles’ catalog?
Let’s begin with the original album itself. I will not review the actual album as it’s a classic that needs more than just a few paragraphs to critique. This review will focus solely on what’s new here, specifically the new mix done by Giles Martin, the long time Beatles producer George Martin’s son. He was also behind the new stereo mixes for Sgt. Pepper and the White Album, and just like those re-releases, the new stereo mix sounds great. However, some of the remixes I believe are from the previous new remix used on the compilation Beatles 1’s remaster. Regardless, it sounds fantastic and it’s the definitive way of hearing this album now. If you like this album, this mix alone makes it worth picking up at least the single disc version.
As for the Super Deluxe content, it’s fine. Nothing here is extremely different from the finished songs but it has some studio chatter and some interesting alternative tempos for some tracks. An alternative recording of the Abbey Road medley is probably the coolest thing here, as it also has “Her Majesty” placed back in its original place after “Mean Mr. Mustard.” Demos of “The Ballad of John and Yoko” and “Old Brown Shoe” are also here, despite not being during the Abbey Road sessions. A home demo of a McCartney song called “Goodbye” is also here, as well as a demo of “Come and Get It”, which was intended for Abbey Road but ended up being given to Badfinger.
What’s here is fine and hardcore fans of the Beatles will be happy with what’s here. Hardcore fans of the Beatles will also know, however, that this collection isn’t comprehensive. In fact, there’s other takes and demos that were previously released on the Anthology Vol.3 release that are NOT included here. Considering that all the bonus content and the original album could’ve fit on two discs instead of the three that it’s on, that’s kind of a dick move packaging wise. Either cut some stuff and make it a two disc set, or including more stuff and earn those three discs.
With that said, although it’s not a perfect collection, it is compelling enough to warrant a purchase from casual and hardcore listeners alike. The remaster justifies picking up the album itself, even if you already own it, and the super deluxe version still has enough interesting content to intrigue the hardcore. The two disc normal deluxe version is sort of an awkward edition but I suppose it does have enough of the interesting outtakes to be a valid option. It is missing the alternate Abbey Road medley though.
Final Rating 7/10 Good

2. Preferred album?
It really shifts all the time. I go through pockets of obsession with all of them but my top 3 tend to be Revolver, The White Album and Abbey Road and atm I’m deeply obsessing over the White Album and the Esher demos so today that’s where I land. Great decision maker over here! lol
10. A song that needs more recognition?
FIXING A HOLE. It’s SO dreamy, I love the lyrics.
“I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in…and stops my mind from wandering..where it will go”
His voice literally sounds like a wandering mind. It reminds me of the that dreamy headspace when you’re high and creative and maybe drawing or painting and following your thoughts wherever they go and it all feels kind of ecstatic
“I'm painting a room in a colorful way..and when my mind is wandering..there I will go”
And also shout out to the Ooo ooo AhhAhh Heh! Heh! Hey! at 1:11 for always giving me life.
I just love it so much, every version. Takes 1 & 3 on the Sgt Pepper Super Deluxe edition are gorgeous and perfect as well.
18. Is there an album or song that you hated but learned to love?
Hmm. I don’t think so? My real skips (songs not entire albums) are still skips ..and those are very few honestly. I did have some neutrals that I’ve grown to love. I Will and Mother Nature’s Son used to sort of wash over me and seemed pleasant but nothing special but now I think they’re both painfully gorgeous and adore them.
Thank you for asking @charlottesharlottes ! 😊

For fun, a micro episode! A reprise of RAM’s critical reception over time. Positive reviews referenced in the episode: Pitchfork “..Paul McCartney's Ram is a domestic-bliss album, one of the weirdest, earthiest, and most honest ever made. What 2012's ears can find is a rock icon inventing an approach to pop music that would eventually become someone else's indie pop.”
ALL MUSIC
“This made Ram an object of scorn and derision upon its release —and for years afterward in fact — but in retrospect it looks like nothing so much as the first indie pop album. Ram has a fuller production yet retained that ramshackle feel, sounding as if it were recorded in a shack out back, not far from the farm where the cover photo of Paulholding the ram by the horns was taken. It's filled with songs that feel tossed off, filled with songs that are cheerfully, incessantly melodic; it turns the monumental symphonic sweep of Abbey Road into a cheeky slice of whimsy on the two-part suite "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.".All three of these are songs filled with good humor, and their foundation in old-time rock & roll makes it easy to overlook how inventive these productions are, ... These songs may not be self-styled major statements, but they are endearing and enduring, as is RAM itself, which seems like a more unique, exquisite pleasure with each passing year.”
LOUDER THAN WAR
“Cool is the most overrated component of rock roll. It blinds the fools and sends the insecure up grubby back alleys of music taste.  ...Maybe it’s a measure of the times but what people ragged on about Paul at the time was the good bloke/family man/simple things in life/not very rock n roll personae that are now seen as assets and that brings us to Ram.At the time the album was buried by the media but now sounds forward thinking and full of that buoyant pop imagination that the supremely talented Macca seems to effortlessly ooze. With the luxury of history the album now sounds like a decades too early precursor to lo fi indie with all the post late sixties bombast stripped away.Of course this simplicity is deceptive. The precociously brilliant McCartney is playing many instruments and he’s great at anything he picks up, dealing out guitar licks, bass runs or pastoral acoustics with an ease for his perfect pop voice to fly over with those cascading and exquisite melodies.”
SUPER DELUXE EDITION
“Ram has McCartney’s DNA all over it. It is endlessly melodic … with a maze of musical ideas; vocal harmonies,...and, perhaps uncharacteristically, there is a steeliness of purpose evident.Ram works so well for many reasons. McCartney’s voice is at, or near, its peak – everything sounds completely effortless, including the performance on the throat-shredding ‘Monkberry Moon Delight’, and the whole thing just feels so real. Paul wasn’t struggling for things to write about, whether it be the seemingly constant backbiting with Lennon or his new-found love of family life and spending time with his new wife.” FAR OUT MAGAZINE
‘...You can trace everything from Britpop to pure jangle indie back to this record. What started as a piece of pure pop innovation would provide a sure footing for a host of other groups to spring from … there is no denying that Paul McCartney’s Ram is a seminal moment in musical history.’
50Thirdand3rd
“Paul McCartney has rarely sounded more exuberant than he does on Ram. With Linda’s emotional support, he found his way through the darkness occasioned by the collapse of The Beatles and shed all traces of depression and disorientation that marked his first solo effort. On Ram, he sounds positively thrilled to embark on a new, independent musical adventure, as is evident in the unbridled energy he displays throughout the record and the blessed return of his sense of humor. His melodic gifts remain intact, he sings as well as he ever did and he’s still one hell of a bass player.”
THE QUIETUS
It’s a record by a man and woman unburdened, enjoying the happiest days of their lives. It’s full of hope and honesty and goofing around. Unlike so much music from the era, it wasn’t trying to shift units or promote itself as ‘real’ music. In fact Paul McCartney probably doesn’t give a toss if you like it or not.”
SPECTRUM CULTURE
“...it’s clearer than ever that this is one of the great magical experiences in rock … The key to Ram’s power is the two equal and not-necessarily-distinct modes it toggles between. Domestic life between the album’s credited artists is portrayed with earthy whimsy; the instruments crack and splinter, content that the center will hold. Meanwhile, the material dealing with the meaning of the most coveted Beatle’s decision to settle down with the woman of his dreams is painted in the same grand, sweeping strokes as Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, and the Abbey Road medley: symphonic pop that pines for transcendence.”
RAM ALBUM CLUB:
“I listened properly the next morning, I sat in front of it and played it loud. My god, what a fool I’ve been, what a joy this record is. There’s hardly any of the 12 bar I was expecting and there isn’t a twee moment to be found. I adore the first bars of Too Many People, his beautiful tramp voice over those fab four chords into Pet Sounds snare hits. Honey to my bee. Lyrically he sounds like he’s kicking some demons around, eating apples, settling scores and having a ball doing it. Ram sounds like it was recorded at 9.12am amidst a sea of sunflowers under a hazy sun. It’s high as monkeys, full of itself and oh my, what a fool I’ve been. Ram On sounds like the whole of the Department of Eagles album In Ear Park (which I love) and Uncle Albert is fine as it is, all of it. I’m not that bothered about Eat At Home. The Back Seat Of My Car is like a track off the Beach Boys album Friends except better, much better. It’s one his best songs and I’ve never heard it. Third time, I take it downstairs. I light candles. I dress smart and bring gifts. I’m in love and o’ what a fool I’ve been. I’m uplifted, uploaded and upended. His singing is great, the musicians are right on the money and the sound is perfect (it is a truth that all records made in the early 1970s sound fantastic).”

I'm listening to the super deluxe edition of The Beatles' Let It Be and I'm having an out of body experience listening to Them™ laughing and being silly and singing stupid songs or throwing Please Please Me in the middle of nowhere and that aching need to go back to basics, to their old times with songs like Maggie Mae, AND at the same time we get them singing their next solo hits like Gimme Some Truth which John sings here with PAUL of all people??? And George rehearsing All Things Must Pass both WHILE recording Let It Be????? WHILE writing the songs for the Abbey Road medley akfjsjskgksj I just... The hard-core beatlemaniac within me honestly is having her mind blown, I'm dying here.
