1st post! Just had a birthday, so I’m ready to start working on my goals. What did I gift myself? Financial freedom! By this time next year I’ll be in a much better place than I am currently. 
So what am I doing to ensure that happens? 
First, I signed up for YNAB (You Need A Budget). I’ve read countless reviews about how great it is and when my sister commented that she saved a few hundred dollars her first month, I knew I had to try it. Now normally it is $89.99 a year, but I found a promo code that offered the first 3 months free. Even better? The program offers free classes, workshops, and guides that make it easier to use. In fact, I have a Debt Paydown Class in about 5 minutes.  I’ve only been on for about 3 days, but I’m going to keep you updated about my progress with the app and my financial goals. 
Next, I signed up for Aaptiv. It’s an audio workout app that you can use on your phone. Before this, I was paying $130/mo for Lifetime Fitness. Now don’t get me wrong, Lifetime is an amazing gym, but I found that the cost just wasn’t budget friendly. I froze the membership for a while, but that was still $21.33/mo. Did I forget to mention that my apartment building has a gym? Crazy, I know. (I really wanted the saunas!) Anyway, I decided to try Aaptiv after a friend raved about it. Each workout is customized by level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced), type of workout, even genre of music. I began using fairly quick workouts (10-15 minutes) and found it was SO easy to incorporate into my workday. I even found treadmill workouts that I could use for my building’s gym. It was much easier than driving to the gym and gave me fewer excuses (weather, schedule, etc.). You can also save and download workouts, which is even better if you don’t have access to WiFi or cellular data. At the end of my 30 days I had to decide whether I would pay $99.99 up front or $9.99/mo. Fortunately, I found a promo for 6 months free and only needed to pay $45.99 for a year of workouts. 
My class has started, but I hope you’ll continue to join me as I begin this journey to financial freedom!

For this post, I’m rounding up 10 of the very best fitness apps, depending on your goals. Please share an app you’re loving in the comments section!
Hi friends! Hope you’re having a lovely week. In between the fun adventures we’ve been enjoying, I’ve also been able to catch some workouts in the gym. Usually when we’re on vacation, I just go with the flow, and get in a workout if it makes sense with our schedule. (For example, I pretty much never work out when we go to Magic Kingdom or Disneyland because the days are so full and we’re walking a thousand miles anyway. If we’re on a low-key vacation and there’s a studio nearby, I might be able to sneak in a class or two.) Since this is a longer trip and we have access to a great gym (and kids’ club!), I’ve been going for it. I know I feel better when I get in a sweat, and I change things up frequently and never get bored.
For today, I thought I’d share 10 of the best fitness apps, depending on your goals. If there are any apps you love, please let us know in the comments!
If you need to work on mobility: GOWOD
I recently downloaded GOWOD when I realized how stiff my muscles have been. I haven’t made yoga as much of a priority lately – I did purchase a month unlimited at a local studio for when we’re back in town – and have been more dedicated to spending at least 5-10 minutes each day on stretching and mobility work. This app is $11.99 per month, so it’s a little more pricey, but I think it’s an excellent complement to a solid strength or training plan. 
If you want access to the best instructors: Peloton
Oh, Peloton. We’re coming up on 2 years that I’ve used and LOVED this app consistently. It started off with the spin classes, since I used to use the app propped up on my spin bike. Then, I finally converted and bought a bike – my favorite purchase of 2018 – and since then, I’ve taken the spin classes at least 2-3 times a week. I also adore their selection of workouts, including strength, yoga, meditation, running/walking, and stretching. I’m pretty sure the app is around $20 per month (it’s more if you have a bike @ $36) but so worth it for the caliber of instructors, the music, and the variety. If you need a solid strength training plan: SWEAT
SWEAT is an app that I come back to if I just have a half hour to work out and don’t want to think about it. The workouts include simple movements that always challenge me and increase my heart rate. I love that they’ve added different formats over time, including Stronger (the gym version of the class BBG workout), PWR (long traditional strength training workouts at a gym), PWT at Home, Post-pregnancy, Fierce (gym-based combining strength and high-intensity), and Build (combining bodybuilding and powerlifting).
If you’re looking for variety: Tone It Up Studio
This app is $12.99 per month and includes HIIT, cardio, yoga, barre, and strength. You can choose any workouts On Demand, join live classes (and see who’s working out with you), and the workouts are categorized for an easy selection.
If you want to track your macros: Chronometer 
I’ve been using Chronometer for quite a while now, and like it even more then My Fitness Pal for macro tracking. It does have ads in the free version, but if you don’t mind clicking the little “x” every now and again, it’s no big deal. They have nutrient bubbles for you to fill each day, so this encourages me to eat more fresh foods instead of simply trying to hit macro numbers. The database isn’t quite as large as MFP’s, but it’s pretty easy to manually input nutrition stats for recipes. 
If you’re a beginner: Aaptiv 
These are audio-based fitness classes from personal trainers ($9.99 per month). I haven’t personally tried this one, but according to the reviews, the trainers are extremely motivational and the music is good. 
If you want to start running: C25k
Couch to 5k is a solid running and walking plan to build up to a 5k. This is an excellent app if you know you want to venture into racers or longer distances but aren’t sure how to do it. I used to use the old school plan when I first started running, and it really gave me insight into what I needed to do to build time and mileage while increasing my running endurance. It’s FREE and $1.99 to remove ads.
If you want to practice yoga more often: Alo Moves
This app includes a variety of yoga classes from top-notch instructors. This is perfect if you know you want to practice yoga more frequently but aren’t able to take studio classes due to price, childcare, or commute. This app also includes tutorials on how to safely build up to specific yoga skills and poses. I think it’s worth noting here that if you’re a yoga beginner, it’s worthwhile to check out a handful of live yoga classes just to make sure your alignment is correct and you can become familiar with the basic poses. 
If you’re looking for prenatal and postnatal fitness: Studio Bloom
This one is for all of my expecting and new mama friends out there! I personally haven’t tried this one because I found out about it after the girls were born, but it has excellent reviews. I also have to shout out my postpartum workout guide here if you’re looking for a safe postpartum plan. <3
If you want to set up your own interval workout: HIIT timer
This is a handy app for setting up your own interval or circuit training. I like to use 30-30 splits or 45-15 splits of work and rest and this way, I don’t have to think about the clock.

As a graduate student studying nutrition, I felt a bit giddy when I was asked to write about fitness marketing. While I might not be the most athletically talented individual, I’ve always been intrigued by the health and wellness industry. I have secret dreams of becoming a yoga instructor but, unfortunately, opt for the couch more often than not.
Now that the new year has started and resolutions are still fresh on our minds, it is prime fitness marketing time. Your target audience is growing because more and more people are bathing in their post-holiday indulgent guilt. Ever wonder why the gym is so crowded in January? Duh, it’s calorie-burning season!
So how can fitness marketers capitalize on these peak times? This post is going to explore nine tips fitness marketers can use to grow their businesses. But first off let’s define what exactly “fitness marketing” is. There are many types of organizations that can fall under this category, including:
Local gyms, health clubs, and workout studios (barre/yoga/spin classes, etc.) Fitness/nutrition apps Fitness gear/swag (clothing, watches, etc.) Health food/supplement companies
Basically, if your company focuses on health and wellness, in terms of food and fitness, you can benefit from these marketing strategies.
#1: Entice New Prospects with Special Intro Offers
While this tip might seem applicable to many industries, it is especially important for the fitness marketing industry, because like I said, the space is crowded. Think something more generous, like a personal training session, a week of free classes, or a free first month for subscribing to use your health/wellness app. Whatever you come up with, it needs to be compelling to give prospects a taste of what they could be getting by incorporating your product or service into their lifestyle.
Take this example from a local gym that offers occasional “open house” weeks when they provide free classes to the community.
Not only does this get people interested (who doesn’t like free stuff!), but it also is likely a successful way for this gym to get new contracts signed. Once these prospects get a taste of how they could improve their lifestyle, they will be much more likely to make a financial investment towards their personal fitness.
#2: Provide Compelling Reviews and Success Stories
One of the first things I do before investing in any health or fitness product or service is binge-read reviews.  Since these types of products can often be expensive and may or may not yield results, reviews are very meaningful in this industry. Not only do you, as fitness marketers, need to solicit reviews from happy customers, but you also need to incorporate these reviews into your marketing tactics.
For instance, if you have high rating on Google-approved review platforms, incorporate these into your Google search ads. Use customer quotes in your imagery for social and display ads. Or even go a step further and film a compelling customer testimonial video.
The bottom line is that if your customers are happy (which they should be), you need to leverage this to help market your business. It will make a substantial impact!
#3: Share Motivational Advice
While the thought of sharing motivational quotes might make your eyes roll, don’t worry! You can do this in a non-cheesy way. For instance, sharing success stories from past or current customers (which also ties in the tip above, extra points!). Your potential leads may be considering your fitness offerings, but they may just need that extra push to make the purchase. How can you give them this?

Make sure you not only provide transparent information around pricing in obvious places like your website, but also make it easy to find in other places, like your paid advertisements. This will ensure you’re getting the most relevant, and most likely to convert, clicks, because these individuals will be fully aware the associated costs.

#5: Run Instagram and Facebook Ads to Your Target Audience
Hopefully this is not a ground-breaking piece of marketing advice. In fact, you may already be running these ads, but are you targeting your audience in the most effective way possible? The really neat thing about advertising on Instagram and Facebook is that you can get very specific in terms of narrowing down your audience to ensure your ads are showing to the right people, in the right location, at the right time.
Take the example below. Here, I’m targeting an audience of people within a specific zip code who are engaged shoppers, newly engaged, and interested in weight training and yoga.
This targeting allows you to make your content laser focused on this audience. For instance, in the example above, you can craft copy about your product speaking to newly engaged brides and grooms who are looking to get fit for their upcoming wedding.
This strategy adds another level of personalization to your advertising that makes your prospects feel heard and understood – and it may even compel them to convert!
#6: Boost Your Budgets during Key “Weight Loss” Seasons
If you are in the fitness industry, you’re likely often tailoring your marketing toward individuals who are looking to accomplish some weight-loss-related goal, whether it’s to drop a few extra pounds or to make a larger lifestyle change.
The thing about weight loss is that motivation often strikes during specific times of the year.  There are the most obvious times, like New Years and right before a spring break or beach season. But you can also think outside the box, like wedding season or once the post-Thanksgiving bloat sets in. It may be different depending on where your business is located (think about the changes in weather), and the trends that your organization has seen in that past. Take into consideration all of these factors and use it to your marketing benefit by boosting your budget during these key times. Also make sure to do a stronger marketing push by becoming organized with engaging and seasonally relevant campaigns.
#7: Go the Old Fashion Route and Mail Some Postcards
Call me old fashioned, but there is something to say about getting a beautiful postcard delivered right to your home mailbox. Not only do I get extremely excited when I get mail, but it also instantly catches my attention when something is personally addressed to me. While mail campaigns were a big thing back in the day, with the rapid-fire growth of the internet and online advertising platforms like Google, Twitter, and Facebook, it’s easy to throw mailing campaigns on the backburner (with the heat off).
Now is the time to get back in the mail game! Create a beautiful hand-written postcard addressing your lead by name and making them feel special. Whether you’re sending a season greeting or promoting a special entry offer, get creative with your mailing campaigns to spark the attention of your future customers.
#8: Provide a Trial, and Make Sure It’s Approachable
The biggest hurdle to joining a fitness program for many is not even financially related; it’s motivation related. It often requires changing a routine and lifestyle that one has lived and felt comfortable in for years. This is why you, as the fitness marketer, need to break down any entry barriers for your potential customers.
One great way to do this is by offering a trial that allows leads to try out your service for a set period of time. Whether you are promoting a physical location like a gym or an online app, there is typically a way to offer a trial period. And I’m not talking about a 30-minute consultation at your gym. Rather, allow new potential customers to come in for a week or so. Giving them time to make this decision will increase the chances of getting a contract signed. They’ll be able to actually start making a new fitness goal part of their day-to-day and see that it is possible if you allow them to test the waters before committing.
#9 Remarket to Remind Leads Why They Should Sign Up
One powerful tool that every fitness marketer should have in their toolbox is the power of remarketing! Remarketing will allow you to encourage those on the edge, interested, but not ready to commit leads to come back and learn more. As we’ve discussed in previous tips, it can be tough to commit to a new fitness product or service so reminding leads what they are missing out on in a gentle way is key.
Configure remarketing ads through Google and social networks, ensuring they are relevant to that audience segment. For example, if you are promoting a specific boot camp program make sure your ads are relevant to the leads who have been visiting those pages or interacting with related content. Keeping things as relevant as possible will ensure your remarketing ads don’t feel intrusive.

Why might Aaptiv not be right for you?
If you’re a complete beginner, you might struggle with Aaptiv. The app does not provide feedback on technique or form, and it’s so important to get this right at the beginning of your fitness journey.
If your posture is incorrect when performing certain exercises, this may lead to a serious injury. Proper form also ensures correct muscle targeting, and this is something that is difficult to communicate via an audio fitness app.
This could be problematic if you are new to strength-training, yoga or boxing. However, with workouts such as running and walking, Aaptiv can still be a great tool!
My Verdict on Aaptiv
Initially, I expected Aaptiv to be just another fitness app – however, I was proved wrong!
There are hundreds of fitness apps out there, all predominantly striving for the same things: convenience and affordability. Therefore, to find an app that stands out from the crowd can be challenging.
What sets Aaptiv apart from other fitness apps is the sheer number of sports, workouts and classes you can delve into, alongside the high standard of the fitness trainers.
The fact that Aaptiv have created a fitness community based around the app is a bonus; I love the motivational kick I get from seeing others smash their fitness goals.
I would class myself as an experienced runner and an intermediate at strength training and yoga, therefore this app was a great addition to my busy lifestyle. However, as previously mentioned, this could pose some challenges for a beginner; most fitness apps are visual, meaning the workouts are in the form of videos, and sometimes vocal cues can be confusing no matter how clear and concise they may be.
Luckily, Aaptiv offers a 30-day free trial, which gives you plenty of time to explore the app in depth and see if it works for you. My verdict? 100% give it a go – it’s a fun, engaging, and time efficientway to get your workout in!

Best Fitness Apps
For this post, I’m rounding up 10 of the very best fitness apps, depending on your goals. Please share an app you’re loving in the comments section!
Hi friends! Hope you’re having a lovely week. In between the fun adventures we’ve been enjoying, I’ve also been able to catch some workouts in the gym. Usually when we’re on vacation, I just go with the flow, and get in a workout if it makes sense with our schedule. (For example, I pretty much never work out when we go to Magic Kingdom or Disneyland because the days are so full and we’re walking a thousand miles anyway. If we’re on a low-key vacation and there’s a studio nearby, I might be able to sneak in a class or two.) Since this is a longer trip and we have access to a great gym (and kids’ club!), I’ve been going for it. I know I feel better when I get in a sweat, and I change things up frequently and never get bored.
For today, I thought I’d share 10 of the best fitness apps, depending on your goals. If there are any apps you love, please let us know in the comments!
If you need to work on mobility: GOWOD
I recently downloaded GOWOD when I realized how stiff my muscles have been. I haven’t made yoga as much of a priority lately – I did purchase a month unlimited at a local studio for when we’re back in town – and have been more dedicated to spending at least 5-10 minutes each day on stretching and mobility work. This app is $11.99 per month, so it’s a little more pricey, but I think it’s an excellent complement to a solid strength or training plan. 
If you want access to the best instructors: Peloton
Oh, Peloton. We’re coming up on 2 years that I’ve used and LOVED this app consistently. It started off with the spin classes, since I used to use the app propped up on my spin bike. Then, I finally converted and bought a bike – my favorite purchase of 2018 – and since then, I’ve taken the spin classes at least 2-3 times a week. I also adore their selection of workouts, including strength, yoga, meditation, running/walking, and stretching. I’m pretty sure the app is around $20 per month (it’s more if you have a bike @ $36) but so worth it for the caliber of instructors, the music, and the variety. If you need a solid strength training plan: SWEAT
SWEAT is an app that I come back to if I just have a half hour to work out and don’t want to think about it. The workouts include simple movements that always challenge me and increase my heart rate. I love that they’ve added different formats over time, including Stronger (the gym version of the class BBG workout), PWR (long traditional strength training workouts at a gym), PWT at Home, Post-pregnancy, Fierce (gym-based combining strength and high-intensity), and Build (combining bodybuilding and powerlifting).
If you’re looking for variety: Tone It Up Studio
This app is $12.99 per month and includes HIIT, cardio, yoga, barre, and strength. You can choose any workouts On Demand, join live classes (and see who’s working out with you), and the workouts are categorized for an easy selection.
If you want to track your macros: Chronometer 
I’ve been using Chronometer for quite a while now, and like it even more then My Fitness Pal for macro tracking. It does have ads in the free version, but if you don’t mind clicking the little “x” every now and again, it’s no big deal. They have nutrient bubbles for you to fill each day, so this encourages me to eat more fresh foods instead of simply trying to hit macro numbers. The database isn’t quite as large as MFP’s, but it’s pretty easy to manually input nutrition stats for recipes. 
If you’re a beginner: Aaptiv 
These are audio-based fitness classes from personal trainers ($9.99 per month). I haven’t personally tried this one, but according to the reviews, the trainers are extremely motivational and the music is good. 
If you want to start running: C25k
Couch to 5k is a solid running and walking plan to build up to a 5k. This is an excellent app if you know you want to venture into racers or longer distances but aren’t sure how to do it. I used to use the old school plan when I first started running, and it really gave me insight into what I needed to do to build time and mileage while increasing my running endurance. It’s FREE and $1.99 to remove ads.
If you want to practice yoga more often: Alo Moves
This app includes a variety of yoga classes from top-notch instructors. This is perfect if you know you want to practice yoga more frequently but aren’t able to take studio classes due to price, childcare, or commute. This app also includes tutorials on how to safely build up to specific yoga skills and poses. I think it’s worth noting here that if you’re a yoga beginner, it’s worthwhile to check out a handful of live yoga classes just to make sure your alignment is correct and you can become familiar with the basic poses. 
If you’re looking for prenatal and postnatal fitness: Studio Bloom
This one is for all of my expecting and new mama friends out there! I personally haven’t tried this one because I found out about it after the girls were born, but it has excellent reviews. I also have to shout out my postpartum workout guide here if you’re looking for a safe postpartum plan. <3
If you want to set up your own interval workout: HIIT timer
This is a handy app for setting up your own interval or circuit training. I like to use 30-30 splits or 45-15 splits of work and rest and this way, I don’t have to think about the clock.

10 Things I’m Most Proud of From 2018
I got married this year after a short engagement. The proposal was captured on the Pure Barre national Instagram page, celebrating Valentine’s Day.
Aaptiv had a tremendous amount of coverage this year, perhaps more than you’d expect from a startup. It’s a testament to how flexible and durable this fitness brand is. We arranged for company profiles in CNN, The New York Times, and The TODAY show, among others, and we were mentioned as viable products to help get into shape on ABC News, GQ, Cosmo, Teen Vogue, Refinery29, and many other places. Our technology was also highlighted on Cult of Mac and Wareable.
This fall, we announced the launch of our app in 19 countries in addition to The United States. I secured coverage in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Singapore, among other locations. We expect several more write-ups to appear in the upcoming January and February print editions of publications around the world. Stay tuned.
We helped tell the personal transformation stories of several of our members, including one man who explained to People how Aaptiv got him to lose 200 pounds. We had other friendly coverage about our members in Women’s Health, Reader’s Digest, and Moneyish. The Aaptiv community is unparalleled in their inspirational pursuits.
Our trainers also told leant their expertise to dozens of articles being worked on, acting as experts on everything from fitness to food. With 20+ trainers available to us for comment, we can stretch our expertise near and far. They were cited in stories on Shape, SELF, Insider, HealthyWay, MadameNoire, and more.
We began to tell our music story, about working with labels to give exposure to both new artists and veteran ones. This Forbes story covered well the close ties between music and fitness, and we extended our PR grip to places like Cosmo and Refinery29. We’ll continue to push in this direction in 2019, as opportunities turn up, since this angle remains of interest and largely underreported.
This year, we pushed Aaptiv’s growth and popularity with some key demographics. The first is mothers -- both those in a maternity cycle and working mothers. Parenting.com gave Aaptiv a plug, and a writer for Working Mother gave it a glowing review. We also began to speak to the senior crowd, as retirement years are evolving for the next generation. Our CEO spoke to MarketWatch about the changing fitness landscape, and HealthyWay named Aaptiv one of the best products for the 60+ crowd.
I spent a good deal of time in 2017 outlining for reporters (and in turn readers) what makes Aaptiv’s company culture so spectacular. In some ways, this is most rewarding work you can do, since it’s so central to the mission of the company and the day-to-day activity. I was quoted in The New Yorker talking about the seltzer wars. Our team chimed in on plant life in the office, and one of our executives talked to FairyGodBoss about career development. We also secured some wonderful coverage of events and activities championed by the different groups at Aaptiv: Black Affinity Fam hosted an event in August, and our LGBTQ group celebrated Pride in June.
This fall, we hosted both in person and virtually our annual 5K Your Way, a race designed to include people of all places in life, both geographically and physically. I was able to get some nice coverage of this event in the Los Angeles Times, Mac Observer, and a Sacramento radio station. In addition, a good selection of bloggers helped us to promote the event, with several participating in the event itself. 
In addition to encouraging participation in that annual race, bloggers tested our product throughout the year and told their various audiences about the countless benefits to choosing Aaptiv for workouts. We saw some men get back into shape after time away. We heard from some experts about why Aaptiv can help people achieve new new heights. And we read with keen interest about their motivational stories. You might not have heard before of some of these bloggers and reviewers, but it’s their stories that stand out from the pack as who we’re serving best.
