Reading chainsaw man is really just putting yourself in so much emotional pain but still you continue to read it and when you think it can't get any worse yeah it can and it hurts so so much but you keep reading it and you hope that that's it the pain is over but then it get even worse again and-

Why do you think nightmare smells like the ocean?

Ok this is something I want to make a comic about at some point so I won't go into too much detail beyond the basic idea

but

I love to think that at some point after Nightmare's corruption, as a scared 6 y/o without a home of his own simply hopping from one AU to another, he usually looked for trees whenever he wanted to sleep as they made him feel safe, and usually that is where you would find him

but at one point, when in an AU without trees for miles, he resorts to another method of hiding, the ocean

he just walks to the shore and buries himself between the calm waves, eventually falling asleep there, thing is, what started as a mere desperate attempt to feel safe becomes a habit

Nightmare finds that water helps with the pain he feels in his back and legs, the waves that rock him gently and the very slight floating make the pressure in his back feel a bit lighter, it’s not even that much better than what he usually deals with, but for a child? that's heavan

Nightmare also finds ocean waves to be calming, they help him emotionally and mentally, especially with feelings of fear, anxiety and depression

And so he finds himself always going back to oceans, the smell sticks within his goop
