A researcher's fight for forgotten cancer patients — young adults
A researcher’s fight for forgotten cancer patients — young adults
A cancer diagnosis can be devastating and isolating for anyone. But there’s one particular age group that’s being left out in the cold, according to a Halifax-based cancer researcher.
Almost five years ago, Emily Drake, a PhD student at Dalhousie University, co-created the hashtag #AYACSM — “adolescent and young adult cancer societal movement” — to give young patients and survivors from around…

Tonight I wrote in my journal for the first time in a while. It felt amazing. I wish there weren't so many gaps in it, but it makes the entries these amazing puzzle pieces to fit together, building my odd conglomerate of a life story. Or at least college-life story. I wrote 4 pages but left out a bit, and I haven't written here in a while, so here are some shower thoughts. 1. Hair Loss part 23460 They don't tell you the real story about chemo hair loss. Cancer patients are imagined as these long haired beauties who all of the sudden one day become thinner with shiny bald heads and strange eyebrow-less faces... But we aren't. I shaved my head with the idea that my hair would behave as my leg has. One shave, and you're good until the last weeks of treatment, when it all miraculously falls off and you finally look like the cancer patient you are. I got a gorgeous and edgy buzzcut that has since grown...a lot. It has also fallen out a lot. I can tell that I'm reaching the last days of hair on my head, but it's an uncomfortable annoyance. I'm ready to be shiny-headed. Every night I check for bald spots and wait for my beauty routine to become a bit easier. Until then, I try to stay fabulous. 2. Mood This is the point in chemo where the symptoms are mildest, I've been told. I got through the terrible first month and the following multiple infections and hospital visits. I survived that with a grace I hadn't previously realized I had. I exuded positivity that was pure and deeply routed. Now I feel grumpy. The grumpiness is bizarre and comes along with my reduced physical symptoms and increased brain fog. I wish it would go away. I am hoping that having acknowledged it will make things better. Today was definitely happier than yesterday. 3. School School has been one of my greatest struggles through all of this, but I'm learning to forgive myself for the things I cannot do. I will let myself finish my classes for last semester with increased ease. My reduce course load for next semester seems (at least now) like the perfect next step. I can't wait to live with my three lovely roommates next year in the same apartment that I moved out of in a rush in December. I can't study abroad in the spring, sadly, but I'm learning to be thankful even at forks in the road. I'll be glad to spend an uninterrupted year back at school. Normalcy with feel like the life of a queen. I cannot wait to be stressed about normal college student things again. I crave those everyday annoyances. Love and wisdom and victory (as always) Eva

AYA Cancer Awareness Week
[photo from September 2020] IT IS AYA (Adolescent and Young Adult) CANCER AWARENESS WEEK. I’ll be sharing throughout the week, but here are just a few of my thoughts that I want to share. The Hippocratic Oath states “Do no harm.” However, story after story in the AYA Cancer Community proves that physicians are indeed doing harm. They are doing harm by not listening to their patients when they…
