The problem with Boeing is that all the planes they make are still based on designs from the 1960s. When those designs were made they were really good as evidenced by the fact that they made hundreds of thousands of them and they performed really well for decades. But unlike Airbus who actually make new designs when they introduce a new model Boeing have just taken the legacy designs and added and removed shit as needed. This cargo-cult approach has led to a huge amount of technical debt which has made their new planes awful and unacceptably prone to catastrophic malfunctions.

The 737 MAX situation occurred because they couldn't fit modern high-bypass turbofans under the wings because they're like four times the size of the jet engines that the original 737 was designed to use in 1968. Instead of drawing a new plane which would have been expensive (and who knows if anyone at Boeing even knows how to design a plane from scratch anymore) they decided to force the engines to fit and fix the ensuing aerodynamic instability in the fly-by-wire software and not even tell the pilots because retraining is expensive and they incorrectly believed that the fix would be completely transparent. Incidentally the 737 MAX only has fly-by-wire spoilers and everything else is still hydraulic because retrofitting a full fly-by-wire to the 1968 design would have been too difficult and/or expensive.
