This is all I needed to speak all my thoughts:

Now, literally zero percent of this is research based. It's all observational. Save for the fact that people are having children later, and more people are moving out of their parents' house later. Oh, and the thing about teen culture coming about in the west is something I learned from a book I read in AP Lang (it also referenced The Jungle and the creation and success of McDonald's. So if anyone has read that and remembers it, please tell me the name because that's where I'm the getting teenagers as a culture and a consumer base idea from)

But basically, I've been noticing within the past like 5 years so much adult exclusive or adult oriented stuff has popped up around me. And not even just adult oriented, catered to an older GenZ and younger Millienial crowd.

If I go into clothing boutiques where I live, a lot of them sell stuff I would've bought in highschool or middle school. What became extremely popular when I was a teen? Environmentalism, small artists, long standing memes to name a few. What about when I was in middle school/even a little younger? I remember like raunchy juxtaposition (like go fuck yourself on a floral background), pizza rolls not gender roles. I find that stuff.

"Oh, Nik, you're 23. It was probably there before and you were overlooking it" I mean, maybe. But I pretty distinctly remember turning 18 and noticing there was almost no where to shop that wasn't either juniors or a little elderly. Like, for women in their 50s and on not 5-10 years older than me.

At first I typed out a million "y'know, it could also be this" suggestions. But I decided I'm gonna leave it at this: there obviously could be other explanations. And there are obviously other contributing factors. But I believe it was mostly labor laws that created adolescence and teen culture in the US. Almost the exact opposite has shifted the culture of young adults. It's changed our choices (like choosing to have kids, choosing to move out on our own) and our relationship with money (the way we think about debt and savings). I think what also may have an impact is that we're a generation hyper aware of mortality by having the concept of our deaths shoved down our throat from pretty young ages. I think it makes us a strong demographic of consumers. And I think it's gonna take off from here and then either fall back out or shift down in age when the people who've waited to have kids and waited to move out do those things.

"Media caters to teens" "media only shows teens never adults" go boohoo about it. Read a book. It's because 16 and 17 year olds are better to market to because they're more likely to have income but no bills, and it's easy to peddle cheap garbage to them. And they're more likely to binge watch because they don't have kids or as many chores to worry about.

Teens have been preyed upon by corporations since teen culture was created in the west.
