Their music is great and the lyrics are freaking phenomenal poems and I have no idea why they're not among tumblr's favorites like? To the killers of animals: nature will bury you." (The Burial) like don't tell me that doesn't go hard. (Personally I like to think of The Burial as not a threat but a loving promise. It continues "To the worshipper of justice, the reliance on reason, and the fire in your eyes: God will bury you, nature will bury you, time will bury your bones unseen. Total and absolute. Infinite amplitude. Till all the black is ripe and green." and because honoring the dead and burying them is an important act of kindness, I like to think of this as a promise that no matter who you are, no matter who you leave behind to mourn you, you will be buried. You will die and you will return to the Earth and you will be lovingly welcomed, it is inevitable and inescapable, I promise. I know I already rambled about this when I reblogged that worm poem post but I will keep talking about it because I love it and I don't know how many people actually read it.) Anyway moving on from minor infodump, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by your second question like are you asking my opinion on pets as a concept or my preferences for having pets or? I think humans love to pack bond with things that are not humans and as long as the human is able to meet the needs of an animal to create a mutually beneficial relationship that's a good thing, but ideally you should opt for domesticated animals (animals that have been our companions for so long they are genetically distinct from their wild counterparts) since they are best adapted to living with humans. I was practically raised by cats living with my workaholic single mom and our cats so personally I love cats and probably have a better time connecting with them than I would other common pets like dogs. Currently mom and I are sharing two cats, brothers, but one rarely visits me while the other is obsessed with me but I suspect this is because a) I always have his favorite snack available (potato chips. yeah I don't think he knows he's a cat) and b) I pet him the way he likes best (which is a lot of rubbing and scratching his spine by the tail intermittent with chin scritches, but he wants you to be firm with it as though he were a dog... again this man is not aware he's a cat).

A boring fact about me... Well easy mode is just "I have two feet" or "I ate a sandwich for breakfast today" but let me try to think of something a bit more personal yet still uninteresting... I have watched less than one episode of Supernatural. Yeah that's boring yet specific.

The main romance is top tier. It's so funny. And the stakes and plot twists are actually pretty good

Ooh, there’s a lot of good info to consider here. Initially, it was hard because I find Type Two’s easily compatible with most of the Redacted bois, but what said about “not being a sexual person” made it easy to choose Ollie for you.

Because he has never and will never get a BA, I love to headcanon Ollie as either asexual, low-libido, or both, so that’s one reason I think he’d be a good match for you. not fic related but i know you are an editor (i follo you on insta!!) but i wanted to ask you how did you start editing and most importantly how did you learn? i’ve always wanted to start editing bc i just have sooo many ideas but i can never figure out where to start and what programs to use. what would you recommend?

ahh omg yes!!! AN EDITING QUESTION god i havent talked about editing in so long even tho im trying to get back into itskldjf

(for those who don't know, i do have an editing insta and tt acc (though i'm not active on tt)!!! @/thae.rchxr on insta and thaerchxr on tt)

i started editing in 2020 during quarantine, and on capcut! i think that it's a pretty good starting spot, especially because it's free and it allows you to understand what you really want to make with your edits/what kinds of edits you want to make - velocities, lyric edits, transition ones, etc

i have to say i wouldn't recommend templates and i'm really not a fan of them. that's my only neg abt capcut now, even though i don't use it... yea i've seen too much of these template apps literally stealing the hard work of editors and it sucks

but anyway!! i currently use after effects, and have used it since early 2022, however it's a computer program, and - though you can pirate it and there are lots of videos online on how to do that - it also costs money if you don't wanna pirate (i got it as a christmas gift so i have the paid version but there's really no difference)

no matter what program you use, TUTORIALS!! youtube is your best friend. i have a youtube channel actually but i mainly post transition inspo instead of tutorials, however if you want some recs (for ae, i unfortunately don't know a lot of tutorial channels for other apps), i learned so much from klqvsluv, ae.chambb, and clewxdre on youtube! and, of course, lauren. she's kind of a mini celebrity in the editing communitysdklf - and there are so many more as well

if it's transition edits you're specifically trying to get into, def try and master the basics - zoom in's, out's, slide left/right, shakes and turbs if that's the kind of edit you wanna make. but honestly, the entire thing is just practice practice practice!! even though i only started editing on ae 2 years ago, i used to make edits, like, every day. i was obsessed. i would wake up and spend hours on edits, trying new transitions and new plugins and effects, and i think it really paid off :)

another thing you can do is attempt to remake edits! most editors will be completely alright with it (as long as you don't steal, ofc) and many even put out project files (i do have a few on my payhip- linked in my insta lmfaodjsf shameless self promo) that you can look at to see how they did certain transitions. remakes are good because it takes out the factor of having to figure out what transitions you want to make and lets you focus entirely on the technical aspect - which will then make it easier for you to pull off the transitions you think of yourself!

so, to conclude this ramble bc i can never shut up - i think i would definitely recommend ae if you have a computer/laptop. but i also think that other editing apps (the ones i see most often are videostar, alight motion, and capcut - all of which are mobile apps) can make absolutely incredible edits. i have friends who use each of these different editing apps and i know they can make some of the most mindblowing edits, even though i personally have no idea how to use vs or am lmaodsjf

so it's up to you! look at some tutorials, don't feel too intimidated, and go with the layout that makes the most sense to you. then just don't be afraid of making a "bad" edit bc let's be real the first edits are alwaysss shitty. i cringe when looking back at the edits all the way to last summer. but that's the beauty of it, because you can see your editing style and skill grow over time, and then you can eventually make edits that you'll be really proud of <3 i wish you the best of luck on your editing journey!! it's honestly so fun once you get into the swing of it :)

Firstly, I would like to preface this post by apologizing to myself and my online persona that this is the very first post I am making (though I am no stranger to Tumblr) and will definitely be looking back and cringing. But, I digress, this is purely for personal enjoyment and the fact that I love anonymity.

Second, there is no particular order in which I rank these men, I just enjoy them and their existence and their creations. So, I guess that's how this list came to be.

Now. On to the white men!

Number one, the one and only, Matthew Gray Gubler. Not sure how this obsession spiraled, but I'm positive that it started with an edit of Spencer Reid on TikTok.

He is both a blessing and curse to my existence. I get a visceral reaction when I see him on screen as he spews out his little factoids. I also feel very ashamed and embarrassed as I watch, to completion, a thirst edit of him and all I can is a black screen with my stupid smile reflected back at me. I feel crazy.

It has come to a point where I started watching other things he stars in. (Yes, thirst watches. I am devolving.) Today, I watched The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, which was very entertaining even without Mr. Gubler. Yesterday, it was Suburban Gothic and that one 15 minute bowling mocumentary where he humps the air. Tomorrow? Who knows. Maybe Horse Girl. Side note: I love Alison Brie.

To wrap up my blurb on Matthew Gray Gubler, I want to say 2 things. I love him as a creator and creative. He is the epitome of silly, which is something I think everyone can be just a little bit more, and he most definitely is Tumblr if Tumblr was a person. His history with art and creating is really intriguing and something I look up to! He models, acts, directs, writes, draws, and more. I just love creative people.

Next white man is Irish, has long beautiful locks, and is gigantimasaurus: Andrew John Hozier-Byrne! Professionally known as Hozier!

Unreal Unearth is actually the very first Hozier drop that I got to experience as a new-ish fan of his work. I love everything he creates; his lyrics, voice, sound has so much emotion and power. I was literally in the shower singing out Francesca as the water beat down my back.

My love for Hozier doesn't just stem from his music but also the content of his music, where he draws inspiration from, and how he's literally just some dude. Cue his handsome Squidward story and the one where he was cursing out some badgers.

The best way to describe the content of his music, in my opinion, is yearning for various releases in terms of love, hope, despair, a better understanding etc. He writes so well, and his feelings can be viscerally felt through paper and sound. He always sounds like he's on the edge of something, always anticipating a moment.

Last one, because everything comes in threes, is Thomas Straker, which is the "all things butter" guy, in case you didn't know. VERY random, I think, but I also don't think so.

Love, love, love a man that can cook. Even more so when he is nice to look at, and doesn't desecrate the food he makes (if you've seen those gross cooking TikToks where they completely violate their ingredients, you'd understand.)

Personally, I've been obsessed with this man ever since his butter series because 1) his voice is really really smooth, 2) he unapologetically loves food. Him creating these recipes and watching him eat his own dishes like they're the best thing to exist is elation.

Not sure if I'm starting to sound weird, but I think it's the same way people feel about Carmy from The Bear. Also, I cook. And it's just attractive how he cooks and enjoys cooking despite his comments telling him he uses too much butter - which is ridiculous because butter is what makes so many foods taste rich and good. Literally go shadow Gordon Ramsey as he makes a steak.

1960s - the beatles. hate to be basic but when you have been an obsessive fan of a band since you were five years old & you were known at school as 'that kid who likes the beatles' it's kind of hard not to pick them. yes i have been cringe since i was a child

1970s - genesis. i've said it before and i'll say it again they are THE band i am married to. i probably know more about them than myself and i go crawling back to them whenever i hear afterglow. that shit makes me want to cry every time & it hits different now that i can relate to the lyrics rather than when i was 7 and had no bitches

1980s - ok so xtc are my favourite band of all time. but i wanna just take this moment to talk about r.e.m. bc i've been having an r.e.m. moment lately again and i just fucking love those 4 dudes from athens georgia. they were the first band i really, truly fell in love with and i will never stop loving them (bitch). literally my gateway into alternative rock & Jangly Guitar Music

1990s - similar to the 80s, blur are my fave 90s band & i could talk about them. you couldn't have my early teens without blur, but you also couldn't have them without lush. miki berenyi WAS the blueprint for me and she was the first woman i looked up to whose experiences resembled my own. saying i like their britpop stuff more than their shoegaze stuff will probably get me crucified but i'm sorry i just like songs abt telling men to go fuck themselves

2000s - arctic monkeys my beloved. i saw them live this month so they're on my mind a bit these days (i say having not really listened to the car LMAO) but they are definitely the band i give a shit abt the most from the 2000s considering i don't really listen to much from this decade. whatever people say is such a good debut and i fucking love that it is essentially a concept album about sheffield

2010s - glass animals. how to be a human being is one of the most albums of all time and i'm still recovering from getting barricade at their show last year. i saw a video about how they only make concept albums and i love that for them. like yes give me music with recurring themes and an overarching storyline

2020s - the 1975. ok ok hear me out. they are the current darlings of tiktok and everyone is watching matty healy like a lab specimen but they FUNDAMENTALLY altered my brain chemistry when i was 16. idrc if you hate them but i love those pretentious mfs. i basically listen to 80s music & music that sounds like it was from the 80s and i like it when you sleep (2016) is the latter. their latest album slaps and restored my faith in them after noacf. no i can't keep defending matty healy but i will do it anyway

For the Redacted match-up! ^_^

A song I’m currently fixated on: “the lakes” by Taylor Swift. The whole song is just so beautiful and wistful. 😭 And something about the melody of these lyrics just hits so right.

Specific lyrics: “I want auroras and sad prose/I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet/Cause I haven’t moved in years/And I want you right here”

Enneagram type: 6w7. (And just for fun, I’m an ISFP as well)

YouTube essays: I don’t think I can focus my attention on a video for that long, tbh. It’s the same reason I can rarely get through movies in one siting. 😂

Imaginary childhood friend: I think her name was Amy? Don’t remember much else, though.

Falling asleep: I always sleep with my fan on, no matter the weather. I have to have the white noise, otherwise it’s just too damn quiet in my room. Usually I’m propped up by two pillows, cuddling one of my stuffed animals or something. If find that I can’t sleep, or just want something to fall asleep to, I’ll put on one of Redacted’s sleep-aids.

Name change: Cheesy as it sounds, if I didn’t have my current name, I’d love to be named Juliet. It just has such Main Character Energy™️ (and I mean that in a good way) and is freakin’ romantic as hell to me. (And yes, I’m aware that the play is a tragedy, not a romance. 😂)

Favorite Redacted audio: If I had to pick one, I think “Serenity Daemon Helps You Relax and Sleep”. That video is just so freaking comforting and sweet, and it’s knocked me out more times than I can count.

Redacted boi with no appeal: Regulus. Yanderes just aren’t my thing, and he legit scares me. 😅

Book/Movie/TV show you could quote entirely: I’ve watched The Breakfast Club so many times, I could quote it forwards, backwards, and sideways.

Redacted BFF: Elliott. Take away the “Lovers” aspect of his relationship with Sunshine, but keep all the playfulness, teasing, and banter that they have together, and I’d be perfectly happy. 😊

(It’s also a really perfect coincidence that Eli’s said he’s the “Protector” type, and I just so happen to like being protected. XD)

Go-to tired ramble: Most of the time when my any of my friends and I would have a sleepover and it was late at night, we’d just get really deep and start talking about life.

Go-to gas station combo: I try to avoid gas stations when I can, just because I hate the smell of gasoline. But I’d probably get a plain Hershey bar and a bottle of water. (I know, I’m boring. 😂)

In terms of Redacted, Ollie’s. If there’s angst abound on the channel, or I’ve just had a bad day at work or something, I can run to his playlist and feel like I’m getting a big, warm, metaphorical hug. 🥰

Guilty Pleasure: I still read, and love, young adult novels. I don’t care that they’re “predictable”, and that I’m “too old to be reading them”. You can pry those fluffy, romantic, cheesy-ass books from my cold dead hands. 😆

Well, if you’re a cat kind of guy (gn), you know that’s gonna make things easy for me! Though it might not be the boy you think, because I’ve got a case to make for you and Milo Greer.

What I really like about y’all is how the things y’all like (other than cats) contrast and how cute that contrast is. Like, I don’t think Milo’s a Swiftie but man shows up and shows out to take you to her Eras tour. The Breakfast Club isn’t his favorite movie, but he’s seen it with Marie; he’ll say the iconic lines with you when y’all watch it for the hundredth time. He doesn’t really love musicals but he can hum along to Alexander Hamilton with the best of them because that’s an ensemble piece and you need a backup singer.

Milo’s just a really great boyfriend who shows love with a combination of Quality Time and Acts of Service with little sprinkles of Gifts. It’s not just time spent with you, it’s time spent engaging in the things that interest you and make you happy. It’s the time thinking of you when you’re apart and bringing home fun, new candles he saw at the store. Although he is definitely not opposed to physical touch- y’all have a lot of cuddle nights, just you and him and Aggro.

Your giggles filled the hallway as you lead Tom into your makeshift studio. Since you were quarantining with him and his mates in their shared home in London, you were miles away from your crew and studio. Which, yes, made it difficult to record an entire album on your own—but it did give you the creative freedom to do whatever you pleased for the album.

The boys had their own creative outlets; for example putting together a puzzle or having a movie marathon. While you found those activities enjoyable, the inner singer in you couldn’t stop thinking of beats or coming up with lyrics in your head. You needed the studio—you needed to bring those beats and lyrics to life before you could forget them. So with the help of the houses’ tech lord himself, Harry made it possible for you to have your own little studio in the spare guest room of the house. There, you spent endless days writing and recording things like harmonies and building melodies. Little did you know that this would lead to the creation of your sixth album. Now a couple months later, your latest album is currently in its final stages and would soon be released to the world.

Tom adoringly watched your figure, which was drowned in one of his oversized jumpers, excitedly skip towards the guest room. As soon as you were both inside, you rushed to close the door and eagerly pushed him to sit on the edge of the bed.

“What have you been up to, lovey?” He teasingly asks you. He knew you were up to something, he just didn’t know if it were bad or good.

Your figure was bent over the desk where your laptop was located. Turning over your shoulder you tell him, “It’s nothing bad, I promise!” You’re met with an amused grin on his blush pink lips.

Gathering your laptop into your arms, you move to sit beside Tom on the bed. He curiously leans forward, trying to get a glance at what’s on your screen.

“Nuh uh, it’s a surprise, Thomas.” You playfully scold him and gently push his face away from your laptop. He responds with a pout against your palm before pressing a kiss onto your skin. You continue to click around on your laptop, looking through your documents for the specific file.

Meanwhile, Tom shuffles further up the bed, getting comfortable. He notices the new distance between you and him and decides that he’s unsatisfied with the additional inches. He choses to snake his arms around your waist and lifts you up, happily placing you on the empty and lonely space on his lap. Laying down on his back, he takes a moment to admire the way you look in his jumper. It was a few sizes bigger than you and stopped right above your knees. The jumper may have looked good on him, but it looked absolutely perfect on you.

“You look so cute in my jumper.” He hums, hands lazily rubbing up and down your thighs. Your nose scrunches up as you lightly slap his chest; your silent way of saying “shut up” whenever Tom would say something that made you blush.

You finally find the file you were looking for and place your laptop on your lap. You nervously glance at your screen, biting down on your lip out of habit.

“Ok, so I did something.” You started. Tom squints his eyes at you, “That sounds like the beginning of a really bad something.”

You huff, “I just told you it wasn’t anything bad! Do you want your surprise or not?”

Tom chuckles and grasps onto your thighs, “Yes—yes, sorry, keep going.”

“So you know how I’ve already finished my album?” You question him. Tom nods, staring up at you while you sit on his thighs.

“Well, I wrote a few more songs that were supposed to be on the album. But I don’t know, I felt a bit greedy and decided to keep them for myself.” You explain. Tom raises a brow at you, “Baby, you don’t have to feel guilty about keeping songs to yourself. If you don’t want to share them, you don’t have to.”

“No, it’s just that, they’re about you.” You pause, staring down at your fingers that fiddled together. “Like I wrote them specifically for you to listen to. I wanted to include them on the album, but it just didn’t feel right to share something that was meant only for you.”

You place your laptop on the bed and turn it so the screen is facing Tom.

“So...as a solution, I made you your own album.” You were too busy avoiding his stare, that you missed the twinkle in Tom’s coffee colored orbs. He carefully sits up, his arms around you getting tighter, as he pulls you closer into his chest. Tom ducks his head down to yours, nudging your nose with his to get you to look at him. When your eyes finally meet, the lopsided grin on his features grows wider.

“You made me my own album?”

“Yeah.” You shyly answer. Tom softly coos at you, cupping your face and pressing a chaste kiss onto both of your cheeks.

“You are the most precious thing in the world, sunshine, I swear.” He squishes your cheeks together and began to cover your face with butterfly like kisses. Sweet laughs erupt from you, the sounds making Tom’s heart swell.

You stuff your face in the space between his neck and shoulder, using it as a place to hide from his lips. Instead, Tom opts to lay his kisses along the side of your face, your neck, and your shoulder.

“Lemme kiss you!” He whines. You chuckle at him, finally moving away from his neck. His attention darts towards your lips more than once, prompting you to lean forward and connect them with his. Tom’s lips were soft against yours, like clouds or cushiony pillows. The kiss was short and sweet; though it didn’t prevent you from feeling the adoration and passion he felt for you in that moment. In fact, he felt it all the time, but right now, his love for you was coursing through his veins.

He finally pulls away, leaving the taste of him linger in your mouth. “Can I have a listen?” He motions his head towards your laptop beside him.

“Go ahead.” Tom’s arms unravel from your waist, the area they once occupied left cold and yearning for his warmth. He uses one of his elbows to hold himself up and the other to control the touchpad. His eyes scan the file.

He glances at you, “I start with ‘someone like u’, right?” You reply with a quiet “mhm”.

Tom clicks on the link. The opening notes of ‘someone like u’ begin to play followed by your angelic voice. You hear him release a content sigh, making a small smile to form on your lips. His arms make their way around you again, this time holding you closer against him. He rests his head on your chest and sneakily presses a kiss onto your neck. You fondly run a hand through his curly hair and rest your chin on the top of his head, listening to the songs you’ve made for him.

The two of you listen through the album in one go with no stops. You found joy in Tom’s reactions towards every song. Sometimes he would make little comments or sounds of shock whenever he heard you hit a certain note. He nodded along to the beats of ‘test drive’ and ‘worst behavior’, dancing around in his seat and making you join him. This time, you didn’t miss the twinkle in his eyes when he listened closely to the lyrics. ‘Main thing’ got him the most, leaving him with a goofy-lovesick grin plastered onto his face.

When ‘main thing’ came to a close, the room became silent, leaving Tom enough time to process the four songs you wrote about him and the meanings behind them.

You were the first to speak, “So did you like it?” You scan his face looking for any signs of dislike.

Tom’s eyes widen, “Are you kidding me? That was bloody fantastic—that was the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard! I’m obsessed with it, oh my god!” He expressed, arms moving around as he spoke.

His face was radiating with happiness, “You are the most talented and loving woman in the world. And I honestly don’t know what I did to deserve you or your love—but I just love you so fucking much.”

“I love you so fucking much too, you dork.” You laugh, pecking his lips.

“No, but seriously, thank you so much. I know you’re used to writing songs, but the fact that you actually took the time to write songs about me means a lot. They’re just a bunch of songs, but they mean the world to me and I cherish each and every one of them.” He admits, taking one of your hands and placing it onto his heart. Your palm feels the faint rhythm of his heart beating against his chest.

You tilt your head at him, mirroring the smile on his face, “I’ll always write songs about you. You somehow manage to inspire them anyway.”

Tom smirks, “Well I am Tom Holland.” You snort and roll your eyes at his humble brag.

“You’re still a dork, Tommy.” You comment.

Tom shrugs, “I’m a special dork because I’m your dork. Therefore making me superior to the other existing dorks—there’s a difference, darling.”

“And where did you come up with this hypothesis, Mr. Holland?” You question him, playing along with his antics.

“It’s Tom’s Theory.” He answers with feign seriousness. You burst out laughing, “Oh is it?”

Tom leans down to your laptop and restarts his album. “Yes, and now Tom’s Theory, believes that we should listen to the album again until I learn all the lyrics to every single song.” He proclaims.

“Babe, you don’t have to—” Tom stops you, “I’m dead serious.”

It was going to be a long night.

1. How long ago did you start reading fanfiction? Writing fanfiction?

Okay, so I started reading fanfiction when I was... probably sixteen almost seventeen? So about five years ago. As for writing it... Well my first fanfic was written in, like, 2015, so I was roughly around fourteen. I only started publishing fanfiction in 2019, and let me tell you, there is a vast difference in quality from 2015 to 2019 to now. It's ridiculous.

9. Tag 3 fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfiction community.

Hmm. See, the problem is, unless I know you on tumblr, I'm not going to avidly follow your works. So I'm just going to say: @itsybitsybatsyspider @pacificseaotter and @felicityphoenix5 (yes, you. No matter how many hits or kudos or comments or likes or reblogs you get, it'll never be enough to compensate for how awesome you are. That goes for you, Itsy, and you, too, Paci).

11. How do you come up with your fic titles?

Usually just by listening to music that fits the vibe of the fic, then picking a good lyric that encapsulates... something in my fic. It could be the character's feelings, their story arc, or the general story line. The few exceptions are when I asked for help with a name, and when I was just starting out.

17. How obsessively do you sit and stare at your fic after you’ve just posted and wait for feedback?

See, I don't just sit at tumblr/AO3 obsessively; oh make no mistake, I check on it, but really what I'm watching obsessively is my email. Because that's the one place I get to see when someone leaves kudos/comments, and when someone mentions me on tumblr. So I'll usually be checking that obsessively, and occasionally checking on tumblr.

To answer the actual question... um, 8/10. Pretty bad. I need validation.

20. What’s your favorite part about the fanfiction writing process?

Easily the part where I get to see this scene I've had in my head for days/months/years (in some instances) coming to life on the page. It's so cool. My second favorite part, is of course, interacting with my audience.

21. What’s your least favorite part about the fanfiction writing process?

Grinding out the "connective tissue" that joins together two important scenes. Like, there needs to be character growth in there, they need to get from point A to point B, but the journey is long and arduous, and I am a weary traveler with few words left in me by the time I get to where I'm going.

25. Do you listen to music as you write? If possible, link your writing playlist.

I listen to music all the time, not just when I'm writing. I have different playlists for different moods, and even different fics. Sadly, all my playlists are private, and I don't feel like trying to figure out how to un-list them as private.

30. Post a snippet from your current WIP without context - no more than 300 words.

I don't know if I'll ever post this, but it's been a passion project for years now. anyway, here's the snippet:

"The graveyard is quiet. No one’s there, no one’s watching, and he has to take several pauses to just breathe around the pain. He doesn’t want to do this. He doesn’t want to see their names on the gravestones, doesn’t want to have to talk to cold granite in order to say what he wants.

41. What’s your most popular fic (with the most notes on tumblr, most hits/kudos on ao3)?

Without looking, I'm going to guess it's Let the Brokeness Be Felt, but lemme check real quick...

Yup. It's Let the Brokeness Be Felt. I'm so shocked. Truly. Deeply.

To be fair, it was the epic conclusion of a trilogy that I poured my heart, soul, and mental health into, and I took like, three long breaks in the midst of writing it, so there were lots of people begging me not to abandon it and adding theories and such. It was great, posting it, though looking back on it now... it's not my favourite. I don't hate it or anything, I just think I could have done better.

it's really funny that beyoncé, the other Biggest Deal of the current music zeitgeist, made MUCH better use of her post malone on her OWN recently-released, critically-acclaimed album

2. The Tortured Poets Department

this is the one that's sticking in my head as the most wasted potential. I love the "oh my chosen Bad Boy is actually pretty pathetic, but so am I, and I like him (and us together) anyway" concept, but.

"tattooed golden retriever"?? "the one people put wedding rings on"???? girl???? there HAS to be better ways of phrasing these things 😭

it kills me specifically bc I can HEAR the joni mitchell influence in how taylor swift is approaching this relationship, in this song and the rest of the album, but she just never grasps the timelessness that joni mitchell had when she sang about deadbeat guys!! also this comparison is making me think about comparing leonard cohen to matty healy and that's not helping !!

3. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys

I like this one! good momentum in the production, good lyrics, no cringe moments. this is the kind of song I'll probably connect to an OC in a few months and get absolutely obsessed with. nice!!

4. Down Bad

I was not expecting alien abduction metaphors, but I'm not opposed. I AM opposed to taylor swift saying "down bad". she never sounds natural enough as a singer to make something like that work. or the constant cursing. she's the kind of artist who needs tracks that play to her strengths; not the kind who can make anything work 🤷‍♀️

5. So Long, London

another good song!! probably my no. 2 favorite on the album, which I did not think would come out of a sequel to london boy .

this is kinda corny, but she gets it over with in the first verse, which I appreciate. otherwise, the writing is PRETTY GOOD

I want to highlight how the last line of the last verse hooks vv smoothly into the beginning of the last chorus

changing "So long, London" to "(I loved this place for) So long, London"... now that's songwriting!!

6. But Daddy I Love Him

okay. first of all. from the context of the verse. it sounds like How The West Was Won represents ~freedom~ in contrast to the evil small town and Society™, which, uh. Uh. Uhhhh.

anyway, the sentiment of the entire song is basically: "screw fame (understandable), screw my fans (HILARIOUS), screw Society™, I'm gonna follow the feeling and be stupid !!" which I appreciate <3 but dear god... her writing

7. Fresh Out The Slammer

this one was doomed by the title. the fact it's repeated often in the chorus only hurts it. there was no salvaging this. I hope you die, I hope we both die, hand in unlovable hand, etc etc

8. Florida!!!

apparently she's trying to use florida as a setting that people go to to get away from their crimes? like it's an exciting, dangerous, fresh-start-of-a-place? girl idk what your social circles think of florida, but it's national reputation is as (1) the current GOP base-of-operations (2) where rich white old people go to retire. yes I know there's plenty of crazy criminals in florida. I've been there. they are, in fact, wildin'. there's also a 1:1 ratio of golf players who own a small business back in ohio and vote republican every election for every one of those cool outlaws

this is a controversial line. personally, I think it's awkward as hell, hits the ear wrong, shouldn't have made it past the first draft, throw in the fucking fireplace, I wish I never heard/read this

I do love how florence is really taking any opportunity to hype up Her Girls and put down their men. I'm glad she's decided this is her vibe. god dance fever was amazing

hearing florence's easy-breezy, "I don't even have to try to sing I just was blessed by god like this" voice alongside taylor's made me realize just how PRECISE she always sounds. she hits every note like she's picking out a move on a chessboard. sometimes, this works v well for her, but other times, it just highlights her weird, stilted writing (and makes her cursing sound soooo childish and forced)

9. Guilty as Sin?

good song!!!! next favorite after So Long, London. the puritanical guilt is HITTING

if the production supported it a bit better (it's a little hokey), this would be the sexiest song she's made since Style. once again, GOOD SHIT

10. Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?

not much to say about this one. it fails in all the ways that Anti-Hero succeeded. there's a lot of moments on this album that make me feel this way, but this is the song that made me certain that Anti-Hero was a goddamn miracle

11. I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)

this is going to sound mean, but I like how short it is 😭 the whole in-and-out, here's-a-snapshot approach really works for this one; if it was a couple minutes longer, it probably would've fallen into the same pitfalls a lot of other songs on this album ended up in. instead, it keeps some groove going, and doesn't have to take itself too seriously. I like it 👍 it feels like the other perspective to I'm On Fire by Bruce Springsteen, which is a compliment on a level I hope y'all can appreciate

good concept, good base, probably could have stuck the landing better. the switch into the pre-chorus sounds REALLY awkward to me; but maybe that'll work for me eventually (it definitely would tie into the theme in this one, lmao). it's not hitting for me, but I wouldn't judge anyone who really loves it, yk what I mean?

14. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived

more wasted potential... aughhhh. the verses are really good at constructing this wasted, pathetic dude, and then she honestly kind of ruins it in the bridge!!

this could've worked if the productions + her vocals went flat after the "good riddance" line; it would have implied that the previous lines were also some effort of building this deadbeat up, and even in hating him, she has to confront that he really just isn't worth it. which is what I thought it was going to do when I first read the lyrics. instead, it keeps building, implying that he is some kind of threat? the surrounding energy just gives the impression he ISN'T the smallest man who ever lived?? please 🙏 stick to the concept, it was so good :')

cute! I like the throughline in this album about following the feeling, and this is a good resolution to it. another one where it doesn't hit too hard for me, but I def respect it

it's perfect in every way, no complaints, this is one of the best songs of her career happening at the exact right point in her career. I'm just going to put the full lyrics here bc They're All Good

no notes! everything here works! she stuck the landing, she captured complicated emotions with grace, she wrote her heart out but didn't make it sound forced, THE OUTRO!! she's written songs about becoming/being famous but never this well. I feel actual emotions rn listening to it! 10/10, 5 ⭐, I knew she had it in her!!

I think I'm developing my own opinion on the new tswift album: it's more frustrating than boring

Did you grow up to become what you wanted to be as a child?

HAHA no. I wanted to be a *scientist* because it seemed like the smartest profession. Now, I still don’t really know what I’m going to be doing. Ultimately I want to become a writer, but the reality of the situation is that I’ll probably get a 9-5 job and you know, get financial stability. Sorry to my past self about that.

What’s something you’re good at vs something you’re bad at?

I’m good at finding the best in others and I’m bad at seeing the best in myself. But hey, at least I am somewhat self aware.

Y’all. I truly think I am a Cat person; however, I currently have the sweetest dog. As of right now? That bundle of joy over everything. Dogs.

If you draw/write, or create in any way, what's your favorite picture/favorite line/favorite etc. from something you created this year?

The oneshot I wrote for UC this year. It was like… 4 short stories inside the span of another. I’m glad that I managed to finish that beast of a fic. I guess in hindsight though, didn’t really need the songfic aspect to make it really work. But it’s fine because I didn’t make the lyrics a large part of the fic anyways. I also was just… really struggling with writers block for the longest time. So glad that I found the inspiration to break it with this.

My artwork and my writing is kind of my hidden talent irl because both aren’t my degree of choice/my profession in life. But otherwise if I had to choose? 

I guess I can mimic a good range of accents. Nothing exceptional, but good for the occasional party trick.

There’s never anyone actually interesting in these chats. 

There’s me, who actually wants to discuss music, the way it feels, the lyrics’ poetic meanings, the way the drums crash like they’re my own heartbeat. And then there’s guys who might want to discuss that, but are probably here for the other occupants of the forum: girls obsessed with band members. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against them, and I fully understand geeking out over Pete Wentz (although I’ve always been more of a Stump girl) or Gerard Way or even Chester Bennington. I just keep having to switch to new forums when it’s clear that no one else wants to talk about the music, but instead have guys who claim to look like Adam Lazarra scam the email addresses and photos off those girls. 

Which brings me here, to another new forum chat, scrolling through older posts about who drums harder: Travis Barker or Mike Kinsella, as the chat scrolls by on the right side of the screen. I was mindlessly scrolling, mentally agreeing or disparaging the opinions of other posters, too scared to comment. This site was pretty neat, and the account I’d had to create to post comments and chat had spaces for a list of my favorites, which I’d happily included. It also had a little bio, which I’d filled in with my name and age, as well as one of my favorite lyrics.

I kept one eye on the chat as it went, keeping up with the current discussion of how best to cut your bangs. I typed up a quick note that the best way to cut your bangs was to see a local hairdresser so you didn’t end up with Buffy season three bangs instead of the side-sweep you wanted. 

Emo-ward: But is it really, truly in the spirit of punk rock if you don’t cut them yourself?

HellsBells: I think to be a real punk, you’d probably need to like different bands. To be alt, you can visit a salon or resign yourself to botched hair. 

Emo-ward: Seems like the majority is going to choose the second option.

HellsBells: Well, sometimes we must suffer for the cause.

I was stunned. No one ever requested me. My cursor hovered over “Accept”, my finger twitching. My mother, as scattered as she was, had always warned me about being too open online. What if this was like, a forty-five year old man who preyed on kids in chat rooms? What if it was a serial killer? What if it was someone from school trying to humiliate me? What if it was a kid from school who wanted to humiliate me and also did a little serial killing on the side? 

Okay, I was being ridiculous. I knew nothing about this person. Hell, I hadn’t even looked at their profile. So I right-clicked the name in the chat and opened another window to his profile. Like mine, the profile had no picture, and instead had a graphic. It was Gerard Way but his hair had been edited to be bright green. I snorted, remembering my own, which was Britney Spears edited with a scene girl haircut that this chick in my Western Civ class had emailed to me as a joke after seeing the Ataris CD in my portable player. The name listed was Edward, the age as 16, and he had a lyric on his profile too. 

“Watching from the floor.”

I recognized it, small as it was. It was from “Dear Maria, Count Me In”. I was a little surprised. Great song choice. 

It seemed he wasn’t too sketchy. 

I went back to the original page, steeled my nerves and hit “Accept.” 

Emo-ward: Do you really have time in your veins? 

My tongue pressed to the inside of my cheek. If this really was a sixteen-year-old boy, I was in trouble. He had just referenced the lyric in my bio, (from “Understanding In A Car Crash”: “It starts and stops and starts and stops again.”) and made it a joke. I had to one-up him. 

HellsBells: Yes. I am also a pen.

Emo-ward: Where are you from, girl with time in her veins who is somehow also a pen?

I smiled at my screen. I couldn’t help it. He was kind of funny. 

HellsBells: Forgive me, sir, if I’m not very specific. I’m from the Southwest. You?

Emo-ward: Well, miss, I will follow suit. I’m from the Northwest. 

There was something about the way he wrote that made me want to trust him. Maybe it was that we had similar chat styles. Although… My mother had always said I talked like I was sixty. What if he was sixty?! Edward is an old man's name. 

HellsBells: You kind of talk like an old guy, you know that, right?

Emo-ward: That’s because I’m 104. 

HellsBells: Wow. You use the internet pretty well for a senior citizen.

Emo-ward: They had us take a class. So, what’s your favorite album right now?

I smiled. Funny, and hopefully not an old guy. 

HellsBells: Will you stop talking to me if I say Take This to Your Grave?

Emo-ward: Only if you stop talking to me for saying mine is Meteora. 

HellsBells: Only if you tell me your favorite song off the album is Numb. That’s where I draw the line. 

Emo-ward: While that song isn’t my favorite, it’s pretty good. Anyway, the actual favorite is Somewhere I Belong. 

I thought about that for a minute. I liked that song, but I hadn’t listened to it a lot. I’d have to give it another go. I had Meteora around here somewhere. I found the album in my bookshelf, put it in my portable player, and put the headphones on. I skipped to the right track, and let it play while I answered. 

HellsBells: Not that you asked, but mine is Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes.

Emo-ward: Aggressive. I like it. 

I burst out laughing. Out loud. In my house. On a school night. At eleven. 

“Bella?” my mom called from across the hall. “Are you on the computer?” 

Shit. “Uh… no?”

I heard Mom start giggling. “Go to bed, kid!” 

“Okay!” I grimaced at the screen. No way I was ever going to hear from this guy again. But… I had to try, right? He was funny, and he had great taste in music. 

HellsBells: Well, grandpa, if you can get the orderlies at the nursing home to let you use the computer on Friday, I’ll be here. Until then, I’m not an adult and have to deal with things like school nights. 

Emo-ward: I’m sorry about that. I never sleep, so my school nights are exactly like regular nights. I’ll be here. 

I shook my head at that, holding in a giant smile. You know what, fuck it, I let the smile loose. It wasn’t like he could see me. And I let “Somewhere I Belong” play on repeat until I fell asleep.

last song: I am ADDICTED to Lend Me Your Voice from Belle. For as many... issues... as I had with the movie itself, that doesn't take away how much I love the soundtrack, and how much I adore this song especially. Really powerful lyrics and gorgeous vocals

last show: ohh man, I can't remember what I watched before I started on Supernatural. That thing is 15 seasons long. It might have been Little Witch Academia?

currently watching: I'm still on my rewatch of Supernatural after having binged it earlier this year - watching it at a slower pace is fun. I can't say it's even a good show, but I love how well it lends itself to headcanons and fanfiction filling the gaps to make the Good Supernatural that lives in our heads. It's just a fun time! Love all the spooky stuff and Sam, Dean and Cas are usually very solidly written.

currently reading: Alongside the absolutely ludicrous amount of fanfiction I've been consuming (thank you 15 years of spn fanfic writers) I've been reading the Lord of the Rings books! The writing style is painfully slow at times, and the character writing is actually quite weak - I couldn't tell you much about the main characters from what he's written! - But I only read it just before I go to bed so it's not like I need it to be particularly exciting or deep.

current obsession: as if it wasn't obvious that I'm going to say Supernatural ahahaha

I've always loved spooky stuff - stories about witches and vampires and ghosts and magic - and this is literally EXACTLY that. The main character roster being very small means there's some solid character writing here and there that I absolutely adore. Some of it is plain silly, and I love that too. And some of it is quite creepy (I'm easily scared by ghosts) in the earlier seasons and I'm all about that!

(I love ghost stories because I'm easily spooked by them yes I'm aware that doesn't make a lot of sense)

anyway - yeah this show is just hitting that sweet spot of it becoming an obsession for me: Good characters, pretty actor men, a ship I could talk about endlessly, spooks, an insane amount of fan content... yes pls
