All The Lessons I Never Learned

13. Room Repair

Synopsis: Loki was a little late on ordering all the furniture and toys from Frigga's list, so they came a little later than expected and he didn't have time (or motivation) to set up the room on his own, so now Thor needs to help him unbox toys, put together furniture, and carry heavy boxes.

Notes: I promised myself this story would be "slow burn", both when it comes to the rebuilding of Loki and Thor's brotherly/caregiver-&-little bond and the future plots with [REDACTED NAMES], but alas… I have no impulse control. Bring on the fluff. You've waited 13 chapters. Here you can have a taste before I plunge you, dear reader, into the depths of the sweet soup.

It was only three or four hours until Thor woke up, and although it wasn’t ideal for Loki, he woke up too, to the sound of his morning work alarm which he had neglected to turn off. 

The first thing he did was check the other side of the bed for wet spots, then asked Thor if he needed something else to eat while making himself a cup of tea. 

More furniture was scheduled for delivery that afternoon, just after one, so up until then, Loki got to work setting up more of what he had been able to get on short notice yesterday.

It was all unpacking, or “nesting” as Thor and Frigga called it. 

When deliveries came, Thor helped his brother lift things and move boxes into the apartment one by one.

However, afterwards, the little made no motion to help Loki with unpacking the boxes or putting together furniture. But, this problem was remedied when Loki asked if he could have a “big strong boy” to help him out, and the preschooler leaped into action and immediately took a box that Loki handed him and began to open it. 

With his rather strong, and tall, brother on his team, the boxes just began to go quicker from there, as Thor would play “find the item” and Loki would open up the packaging and put it together for him, and together they’d decide on a location for it together. 

Some pieces of furniture, like the rocking chair, were simply in boxes, fully assembled, for Thor to just take out and set inside the room which, after the bookshelf, and rocking chair had been added, actually started to look like a little’s bedroom. 

After that, the brothers could begin with the fun parts: the toys, books, and clothes which they worked through together-- the pieces which didn’t need much setting up or preperation. They could just go into the drawers or in closets after being taken out of their boxes. 

To Loki’s surprise, his brother seemed to actually have a fairly good grasp on not only how to sort things, but also how to fold his clothes and organize them in an aesthetically pleasing manner, putting his books and clothes away in the dresser and closet without Loki’s prompting as soon as the adult brought in the boxes. 

“Loki? Why’s hvit?” 

“Hm?”

“Why’s hvit?” Thor pointed at the toy ambulance Loki was taking out of the package. 

“Oh, it’s white because… um… the elves at Santa’s workshop wanted to repaint it,” he lied. “They restored all your toys. See? That’s why they’re all neat and in packaging.” 

Thor nodded. “Why dinn’t he get Mjolnir?” he asked, a little sadly. 

“Because Mjolnir’s perfect as he is.” Loki told him while busily wrestling with a few zip-ties. 

A quick bathroom break allowed Loki a moment to survey the state of his apartment outside Thor’s room, and to realize that there were at least four more boxes to unpack plus the play kitchen that he’d be shipped in a week or so.  

“Why don’t we take a break for the day?” he sighed after poking back into the nearly completed, and already crowded, nursery. 

But instead of agreeing as expected and maybe asking about lunch, Thor whined and threatened another fit. 

“Do you want to keep going?”

“Mjollnir don’t have his cradle! How’s he gonna sleep?!” the little whined. 

“He’s a snake, I’m sure he can just sleep with you like he did on the plane.” 

“No! He’s a baby!”

“You slept in my bed, why can’t he sleep in yours?”

That did not help. 

Loki sighed, pinched the bridge of his nose, and opened up a couple more of the boxes, building the doll cradle first, which barely fit into the corner of Thor’s bedroom, and then the highchair which Thor insisted went at the table by the kitchen. Finally, a 9-bucketted, primary colored, toy rack, unfortunately had to be set in the living room, right next to the credenza under the TV.  

By the end of it, Loki felt as if he had a colossal glistening, neon sign looming above his head that said “I’m A Caregiver” in huge colorful letters as he looked around his apartment. He slunk down onto his couch and rested for a minute. 

“Loki! Loki, wanna play?” 

“Absolutely not,” Loki answered as he emotionally deflated. 

“But, brother!”

“Big brothers need their naptime, too, little one. I’m ever so tired. Won’t you play by yourself for a few minutes?”

Thor huffed in response to that and left. 

At first, Loki assumed that meant that the little would follow his instructions, but soon he came back with his stuffed snake and crawled onto the couch next to him, nestling into Loki’s lap and making himself comfortable.  

Loki looked down at his elder little brother inquisitively, and asked what he was doing. 

“Napping with you,” Thor replied, not realizing how much he was crushing Loki’s legs, which the adult pretended not to mind. 

Instead, he let Thor stay there, petting the little absently as if petting a cat and accidentally causing him to chuckle and twist a little bit when Loki accidentally tickled a sensitive part of his side. 

Maybe if he could keep things like this, life wouldn’t be so hard. They could make this work.--

“Brother? Can we watch TV?” Thor asked. 

“Yeah, what do you wanna watch?” Loki tiredly asked with his eyes still shut, fumbling for the remote he knew was on the side table. 

Thor hummed as he considered. “Um, do you have Peppa Pig?” 

Loki searched for it and put it on for Thor before needing to turn the volume slightly down to save his ears from the child (or at least child-sounding) voices and music, but Thor took the remote and turned it back up almost immediately. 

Well, maybe this would still be a little hard. A little bit.
