FINALLY saw the Mario movie today and....idk as someone who is very close to their siblings I rlly appreciated how their sibling dynamic was handled like they actually felt like real siblings
Like even beyond foregoing the tired "siblings be fighting" tropes I rlly loved the sibling affection and how there wasn't a "useless younger sibling vs overcompensating older sibling" dynamic. Like YA!!! Mario looked after his little brother but Luigi never felt like wasn't mario's equal. No jabs at Luigi like some of the games do (superstar saga I love you but I'm squinting)
All in all a very cute movie
#i generally like all the character dynamics!#the narrative was a bit pushy at times w/ mario and peach Being A Thing#like they had to fulfill the heterosexual quota...but they didn't explicitly end up A Thing by the end iirc which was nice#this is not including the plot being bowser being jealous of mario i thought that was fine!#a much better alternative to the 'chosen hero' trope imo#bowser is just jelly becos he thinks peach is into Some Guy and not him lmao#ALSO DIDDY KONG!!!!!!!! YAY I LOVE DIDDY!!!#and dixie and chunky too!!!!! ehehehehe#scout.txt

Opinion on the Mario movie? Likes. Dislikes.
It probably helps that I watched it with a friend, which makes the viewing experience better, because it was fun! I wouldn't rank it as high as D&DHaT, but I immensely appreciate any Easter eggs in video game movies; the Punch-Out Pizzaria with photos of boxers like Glass Joe and a Donkey Kong arcade with Jump Man on the side, Mario playing Kid Icarus on his NES, all the auditory references, that Brooklyn bit in the beginning that played out like an original Mario level, Diddy and Chunky Kong showing up and a riff from the Donkey Kong 64 rap (was THIS close to performing the rap right in the theater), King Boo and King Bob-omb were wedding guests, the fact that Unagi (that creepy as hell eel) from Mario 64 shows up and is GIGANTIC! I would've lost my mind if Luigi ran afoul of a certain piano while in that old castle...

My "had a Nintendo 64 as a kid" heart was eating well.
Love to see the brotherly love between Mario and Luigi! I dig how this version of Peach was proactive and spunky, forever protective of her subjects, and would tease Mario a bit but always supported him no matter what. But of course the real star was Bowser and his sick piano playing! I'd have married him in a heartbeat, just look at him! With the face and the eyes and the smile!
As for dislikes, it goes without saying that Chris Pratt's slightly Brooklyn take on Mario is pretty lackluster compared to everyone else nailing their roles. Also that dog needs a very stern finger wagging, only an Illumination animated dog would have such a vendetta over a broken snack, or toy, whatever it was. My dog would've been like "Yay! Treat turned into two treats!"
