(1) Will is not automatically the “weaker” partner thANK YOU!!! 👏👏👏 if anything like you said it’s this slipping in between qualities/behaviours/interests that are seen as traditionally masculine/feminine for both Hannibal and will thats so interesting in addition to everything else! Without even touching the fact that Hannibal textually runs along w impulses that can conflict (eg. wanting to both monxh Will to escape dreaded FEELINGS and to run away with him)

(2) and Will is also dealing w so much internal conflict in his desires when it comes to Hannibal (delight or tolerate in violence etc,) so it comes across in this wonderful push/pull power dynamic where by S3 there’s some form of equilibrium but its kinda like water where it’s shifting all the time - tho ultimately I’d say far more power lies in Will’s hands since Hannibal comes to a point where he abandons his own freedom just to ensure Will can’t forget him

asjdkdhskd thank you I’m glad you agree! Honestly the push pull of their dynamic is their big draw for me, and I feel like to an extent it’s a large part of the draw for them?? They’re so evenly matched, and neither of them is really used to having someone who can think on anything like their level… Hannibal considers himself better than everyone and Will considers himself cursed but they both are crazy good at reading and manipulating others. Having someone who can actually surprise them is incredibly novel. Having someone who can outplay them is unheard of.

Like I firmly believe that Hannibal wouldn’t have wanted Will nearly so badly if Will hadn’t demonstrated that he was capable of and interested in standing up for himself against him?? Will was kind of an asshole to him from day one and Hannibal was like “I want this asshole to be mine” not “I want Will to stop being an asshole” (which is also a mischaracterization I’ve seen: Hannibal hates rudeness in general but he loves Will as he is, rudeness and sarcasm included)

Hannibal absolutely follows contradicting impulses, many many times. I really don’t know how anyone could watch Mizumono and think that Hannibal was in control of his feelings in regards to Will. How do you watch a man stab someone and then clutch them close and weep without recognizing there’s some internal conflict there lol. And the entire Italy arc.... is it not obvious that Hannibal has lost it a little bit there???? He’s a mess. It’s very clear to me that he’s a mess. I don’t really know how people interpret that storyline without coming to the conclusion that he is, again, a mess. 

And when they come back from Italy, and Hannibal not only saves Will but carries him home and tucks him into bed... the devastation on his face when Will rejects him... the decision to GO TO PRISON, something he has actively fought and could easily have avoided, simply bc he cannot handle the idea of Will not having to think about him anymore???????????? Explain to me how to interpret that as an act of a man in control. A man acting for his own amusement who secretly has the upper hand. Explain to me in what way spending years in prison is an upper hand. 

Making that choice puts him entirely at Will’s mercy. Even if he could’ve broken out on his own, he clearly wasn’t going to, bc that would’ve had the same problem that not getting arrested in the first place would have had: no Will. He very literally would rather be locked up (with nothing, not even a goddamn toilet!!!!!!) than not have Will in his life!!! Someone tell me how they imagine that that puts Hannibal in the place of dominance!!! 

It’s Will’s choice to break Hannibal out of prison and it’s Will’s choice to not let the Dragon kill Hannibal, and if they go forward the relationship is gonna be on Will’s terms bc Hannibal has tipped his fcking hand!! All Will has to do is threaten to leave and Hannibal is at his mercy!!! Turning himself in is as good as saying “I’d do literally anything to be with you” and he can’t unsay that!!! It got said and it got heard and Will knows he has that power now!!

Meanwhile Hannibal hasn’t gotten anything like that kind of reassurance from Will!! He can snark and snipe all he wants about Will’s relationship with his wife being terrible but Will totally did move on and get married... sure he ended up picking Hannibal but he very nearly did not and then he threw them off a cliff so there’s some evidence that Will may still be conflicted about that decision... and I mean, let’s be real, after everything that’s happened between them Will is probably going to hold onto that emotional advantage for as long as he can get away with. And Hannibal will take that, bc it’s what he can get, and he’d rather have any part of Will than no Will at all
