21. Ancestors

The members of the inaugural class of the Umbrella Academy are, for all intents and purposes, the first generation of their family. The man they call “father” is anything but, and while their android mother does live up to the title, there’s no connection to a lineage there, but they find ways to build bridges to unknown families.

Foreign language study is a requirement of their father’s curriculum, but each child takes a particular interest in the language they would have spoken if not for the man who took them from their mothers’ arms. A few go much deeper into the study, beyond mere proficiency. Ben, Diego, and Viktor make it a genuine second language, to the point that they can play out fantasy scenarios in their minds of conversations with their parents.

Ben’s imaginary mom tells him he’s beautiful and reminds him that those violent thoughts are the Horror’s, not his, because she knows her son and he’s not a monster. Diego’s puts his head between her hands and kisses all over his face as he giggles and tells her to stop. Viktor’s heaps praise on him after every performance, always amazed by her talented son.

Some find their bridges to the past in their history lessons. Luther takes a shine to the Vikings, naturally. He builds models of longships and researches symbols to craft into medallions with clay. He wants to wear them, but feels too silly, so he keeps them in his bedside drawer. Allison immerses herself in the stories of the anti-apartheid activists of South Africa. Leaders like Nelson Mandela, Annie Silinga, and Stephen Biko captivate her and teach her what it means to be a hero. She is most fascinated by the life of Ida Mntwana and wonders if she could sing a crowd to peace in the face of police agitation the way Ida did.

Klaus finds the only concrete link to his specific lineage: a name and an address, found on an old check stub. He can’t bring himself to do anything with this information, but he carries it with him. No matter how unsteady his living situation or how little he owns at any given time, he makes sure this two inch square of paper is safely stored in a secure pocket or hideaway.

It may seem a paltry imitation of a heritage, but to the Hargreeves children, it means the world.

The GFMIU: Gray Fratster Murder Investigation Unit Origin 

The Advisory is sick with grief knowing someone is evading consequences of disrupting the social order of Black Mesa. They prepared for decades to launch Operation Repop and some hot headed twerp wasn't going to ruin it all. The police being stumped over Gary Frastser's murder for four long years left the residents of the city to question everyone and everything. The Advisory does not want them to begin to question them. They assemble a trio in order to regain control.

Kent Butler is a street cop who has been selected for his enthusiasm to get the field. He has established an acquaintance with Allison Love, a main character in the case, after responding to a burglary at her prior residence. This is his chance to prove he has what it take to make detective. Will he be able to keep his eyes on case files or get lost in someone else's?

Shae Cop was born into a family of law enforcement and prosecutors. He's been a detective for ten years a few counties over where he was raised. He swore to his father he would never leave their hometown. However, the Advisory made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Can Shae lead the others into victory and the glory that comes along with it?

Finally, there's Thalina Vortex, the Advisory's own creation. But first here's some t0xic Black Mesa lore.

Before the Great White Flash of 1985, the Serenity Six were families that guided Black Mesa towards becoming an opulent oasis. Well, at least in the eyes of the Advisory.

The Hoffman Family, Love Family, West Family, Ross Family, Moon Family, and Frost Family, sound familiar?

The families patriarch and matriarch would get specimens collected by the Advisory each generation...for...reasons. Luckily, the laboratory is underground; no unexplainable occurrence could destroy what was needed for Operation Repop. First the original six, Allison, Nelson, Medusa, Tommy, Ava and Bryce, were created from the Serenity Six's DNA. The Advisory has experienced great comfort watching them adhere their family's ethics and feuds through their own behaviors unknowingly. 

Now, Vortex is the combination of the most influential leader from all six families and a seventh unknown source. She has abilities that the Advisory expects the boys to use to their advantage. Although, she aches to provide salience to her developers, she can't help catching herself getting lost daydreaming for a family of her own. Will investigating her linage provide Vortex the insight to be confident with her instincts?

Neil Young Returns to Farm Aid as Event Makes Third Trip to Indiana

- Benefit show is slated for Sept. 23 at Rouff (Pronounced “Deer Creek”) Music Center

Neil Young will join his fellow Farm Aid directors Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Margo Price when the annual benefit returns Sept. 23 in Indiana.

It will mark Young’s first in-person Farm Aid appearance since 2019. The event was virtual in 2020 and Young skipped the ’21 and ’22 dates, citing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring the Wolfpack, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Lukas Nelson, Allison Russell, the String Cheese Incident and Particle Kid are also slated to appear on stage at Rouff (Pronounced “Deer Creek”) Music Center.

“Family farmers have the solutions to some of our toughest challenges,” Nelson, Farm Aid’s president, said in a statement.

“As we face a changing climate, farmers in Indiana, across the Midwest and all over the country are farming in ways that create more resilient farms to build healthy soils and protect our water.”

This is Farm Aid’s third trip to Indiana after previous concerts in 1990 and 2001. And Mellencamp and company are “honored and excited” about the prospects.

“My home state holds deep meaning for me and for the generations of family farmers who have dedicated their lives to caring for the Earth and bringing us good food,” Mellencamp said.
