so here’s the deal folks, since apparently life has to be explained to you. our lovely little tv show th.e 1/00 has one of the biggest white-savior issues i’ve ever seen. two of it’s main female charactes fall into this almost 150% ( c.lrke & oct/via ) and various other characters on the show also have pulled this card as they’ve spend time on air ( m/rcus k.ne is a good example, mostly due to the fact that its far more subtle ) now i’m not saying this takes away from any of the characters at all m/rcus is one of my favorite characters on the show and both c.lrke and oct/via are strong female characters but it is something that needs to be awknoledged with how the show is written, because i think some people are taking the ‘ white ’ part of it too seriously ( which is why i included m/rcus in here too ). what ska/ikru as a whole represents is WHITE COLONIALISM. you litterally see it happen time and time again. for some broader examples: in season one when they land and expect no one to be there, and again when they think that the land they’ve landed in should belong to them even though it 100% belonged to someone else befor ethey landed, and in two & three where a sk/aiperson decides that they know more about the gr/ounder culture than a gr.ounder that they can train and be better than the gr.ounders at their own culture, and again in season three where they insert themselves into the polotics of another culture and try to dictate what should and shouldn’t be done, and again in season four when they try to ‘save’ the ‘savages’ by ruling themselves. it’s a. obvious that’s why ska/ikru is meant to represent with the ground.ers and b. those are just the broad very obvious times they do it, this concept perminantes into more suble things into the show. honestly it’s a very well written show on this front, but it’s important to realize what it is they’ve been writing. you don’t just get to dismiss it.
it’s WRONG to support any sort of white-savior tropes in general. and to be honest i only put up with canon characters because they have been created for the setting in a very specific light. however when i see original characters being made with white-saviorism as their entire premise it’s a little worrysome. not only is it distasteful but it’s something that in no way should be supported. roan put it wonderfully with:  “Because you think we’re savages and need saving”.  the grounde.rs aren’t more primitive people than skaikru, while they do not have more technology they’ve shown time and time again to be not only more human but often better infomed of what’s going on that skaikru themselves. which is another part of th/e 1/00′s narritive ---- the debunking of the NOBLE SAVAGE trope in regards to the gr/ounders which honestly we were supposed to have gotten over by season two but apparently not. the show itself has enough white-saviorism in it that they understand the need to balance it out on occasion. adding more to the fire ? supporting and basing characters in the white-savior trope is not okay. your sk/aiperson is not someone the groun/ders would bow too just because they are from the sky. we’ve seen this already ( remember season one ). becca wasn’t who she was to them because she was from the sky, she became that figure because she raised them up.
ive seen this community write characters beautifully. i’ve seen them take cl/rkes character and awknolege her faults and write her in a way that pushes past them and creates and understanding of the problem while staying loyal to her character. and if we can do that with one of the show’s strongest agressors then we can honestly fight this issue anywhere. it pains me to see that characters are starting to come up with this as an issue. there is absolutely no reason we should be supporting this kind of character. and that’s just based on the morals of fighting a trope completely based in fantasy. but if basic morality isn’t enough for you please take this final paragraph into consideration. white saviorism is based on a narritive of colonialization, in which the white man had to come save people of color from themselves. colonization while it was good for the white man, caused nothing more than destruction to the people already native to the lands they conquered, destroying cultures, civililizations in their wake. Mass genonice was a result of colonization, and it’s something rarely covered in the education system, they often ripped children from parents so they would be taught ‘ correctly ’ ( the white way ) and that’s just the start. Any time you’re supporting the white savior trope especially when you do so without awknlowledging the faults of the issue, you’re turning your back on millions who’s families and cultures have suffered as a result of white-colonialism. so please, don’t make original characters that further support this narritive. it’s bad enough when a television show does it, it’s a little striking to see those that pretend to be more informed about issues than the hollywood elite are truely no better.
think of it this way: you wouldn’t support a character that was a child rapist, so why write one based on a concept that often led to it as well.
