AI and Art
One of the primary celebrated differences between humans and non-human animals is ‘Art*’.
It is exclusive to humans, it came to us with advanced neurological evolution.
For argument’s sake, some would like to say that other non-human animals, do create art too, in the form of nests or elephants learning how to paint. Well, that might appear to be true, but it deviates us from the core and purpose of art: aesthetic pleasure and communication. Animals, do not create art to enjoy the process or result, the elephants paints, simply because it has been trained to do so, they might get a reward from the keeper for this and birds create nests for survival; to attract mates, lay eggs, and live safely, they do not try to fancy their nests or reflect their idiosyncratic selves into their nests, all nests of the same bird species look the same.
Art being so sacred to humans has been dedicated for centuries by devotees to the mighty god, lovers to the ailing moon, rivers to mountains, and developers to computers.

Europe's AI Innovators Pin Hopes on 'Jevons Paradox' After DeepSeek Setback
After the sudden and sharp downturn of DeepSeek, one of Europe’s most anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) startups, many AI advocates in the region are turning to the economic theory of Jevons Paradox as a beacon of hope. The paradox, which suggests that as technology improves efficiency, the demand for that technology may actually increase, has become a key focus for European AI innovators who are navigating a rapidly shifting market.
Tumblr media
DeepSeek's Struggles: A Wake-Up Call
DeepSeek, once considered a promising player in Europe’s AI landscape, recently faced a major setback, with its stock plummeting and its future uncertain. The company, which had been at the forefront of developing advanced AI models and tools, struggled to meet its ambitious goals amidst mounting competition and market fluctuations.
While the AI sector in Europe remains poised for growth, DeepSeek’s difficulties have caused some to question the pace of development and its long-term sustainability. However, despite the setback, many AI leaders in Europe believe that AI still has a bright future in the region, bolstered by the principles of Jevons Paradox.
Understanding Jevons Paradox in the AI Context
At its core, Jevons Paradox argues that as technological advancements make processes more efficient, they often lead to increased demand rather than a reduction in consumption. In the context of AI, this could mean that as AI technologies become more effective and accessible, businesses and industries may adopt AI-driven solutions on a much larger scale, leading to increased usage and demand across various sectors.
European AI experts are now looking at Jevons Paradox as a potential framework to guide future investments and developments in the field. China's Tech Dominance: The UK's Struggle to Keep Up
Tumblr media
China’s growing success in technology is not a mere accident but the result of deliberate, long-term policy investments. A recent example is the emergence of DeepSeek, a ChatGPT competitor created by a little-known hedge fund in Hangzhou, which claims to have spent just $5.6 million to develop the AI. This development is indicative of China's broader efforts to dominate the tech sector.
At the core of artificial intelligence (AI) development are three critical elements: microchips, data, and PhDs in science and technology. On two of these fronts—advanced education and data—China is already ahead of many Western nations. Chinese universities produce over 6,000 STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) PhDs each month, compared to about 2,000 to 3,000 in the United States and 1,500 in the UK.
China has also surpassed the US in patent filings, with 1.7 million patents filed in 2023, compared to just 600,000 in the US. Two decades ago, China filed just a fraction of the patents that the US did, but today, it has taken a leading position globally. While questions remain about the quality of some patents, China has also outpaced the US in "citation-weighted" patents, which measure the influence of innovations based on how often they are referenced.
In addition to AI, China’s advances are notable in other industries, such as electric vehicles (EVs), where it has become the world's largest exporter. Chinese manufacturers have cornered supply chains and technology for lithium-ion batteries, drastically lowering costs over the past decade. This success in EVs is paired with China’s efforts to lead in "electric intelligent vehicles," a sector where traditional automakers are struggling to compete, especially in software development.
China is also electrifying its entire economy at an unprecedented rate. The country now files for three-quarters of all clean tech patents globally, a massive increase from the start of the century, when it filed only a small fraction.
In AI, China is positioned to become the global leader, as highlighted by a recent US National Science Board report, which noted that China now outpaces the US in AI research publications, patents, and the production of STEM graduates.
The UK has recognized China's technological rise, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves visiting Beijing earlier this month. The trip underscored the UK's interest in strengthening long-term economic ties with China, particularly in the realms of AI, clean technology, and innovation. Chinese tech companies like Huawei are also attracting attention, with UK executives noting the company’s impressive campus and its role in global tech development.
However, there are significant concerns about data security, censorship, and democratic values, especially as China's tech industry thrives on access to vast amounts of data—something much harder to obtain in the West. This raises questions about the implications of China's AI dominance, particularly with regard to privacy and geopolitics.
While the UK government faces a delicate balancing act in its relations with China, the country's tech innovations, such as DeepSeek and advancements in AI, represent a major challenge. European nations like Spain have already encouraged China to share its advanced battery technologies, and there are growing concerns about whether China’s influence will extend beyond consumer goods like electronics and EVs to include data-hungry AI models. This shift could have profound implications not only for the tech industry but also for the global economy and geopolitics.

"With technology playing such a big role in today’s business world, what tech-related skills do you think are the most important for aspiring entrepreneurs to succeed?" I approached a fellow student, a tech-savvy girl who radiated quiet confidence. When I asked her about the role of technology in entrepreneurship, she took a moment to reflect. It was clear she had thought deeply about this topic before.
"Honestly," she began, "the most important skill is knowing how to leverage technology to scale your business. It's not enough to just have a great idea anymore. You need to understand the tools and platforms that can amplify that idea." She talked about how technology drives everything now — from digital marketing to data analytics, even automation. "You have to be comfortable with tech, and not just the basics. I’m talking about using social media strategically, analyzing customer data, and automating repetitive processes."
I nodded in agreement, but then she said something that really made me sit up. "You know, entrepreneurs today should also be thinking about how technology can solve real-world problems, not just make businesses more efficient." That’s when she gave me an idea that completely shifted my mindset.
"What if there was a way to create an automatic earthquake detector for our campus buildings? Something that could detect tremors and instantly trigger an alarm without anyone having to manually push a button?" Her eyes lit up as she explained further. "Think about it — a system that could send alerts through the building's intercom, text notifications to everyone’s phones, and automatically alert emergency services, all without human intervention."
It was a brilliant concept — and it immediately got my gears turning. I could see the potential for something like this, especially in earthquake-prone regions. It wasn’t just about making businesses more profitable; this was about saving lives with technology. "An automatic earthquake detector," I repeated, imagining the possibilities.
Her idea opened my eyes to the broader role technology can play, not just in entrepreneurship, but in society. Entrepreneurs who can harness technology to address real-world challenges, like safety and disaster preparedness, have the potential to make a lasting impact.
She continued by stressing how important adaptability is in tech-driven industries. "The skills you learn today could be outdated in a few years, so you have to be a lifelong learner. And don’t be afraid of failure — it’s part of the process when you’re innovating with new technology."
We talked about specific technologies that are shaping the entrepreneurial landscape, like data analytics and cloud computing. But the real takeaway from our conversation was the power of combining technical skills with creative thinking. Her idea for an earthquake detector wasn’t just a reminder of how crucial technology is — it showed me how entrepreneurs can use tech to create real, meaningful change.
As I walked away from the conversation, my mind was racing with possibilities. It was clear that technology is no longer just an accessory to entrepreneurship — it's a driving force. And entrepreneurs, like this student, who can combine technical know-how with visionary thinking, are the ones who will truly make a difference in the future.
