#AI electricity use

I appeared on the Shift Key Podcast on April 3, 2024, talking about electricity used by AI and ICT, with a focus on load forecasts
This conversation was a fun one. here's the description:
Will the rise of machine learning and artificial intelligence break the climate system? In recent months, utilities and tech companies have argued that soaring use of AI will overwhelm electricity markets. Is that true — or is it a sales pitch meant to build more gas plants? And how much electricity do data centers and AI use today? In this week’s episode, Rob and Jesse talk to Jonathan Koomey, an independent researcher, lecturer, and entrepreneur who studies the energy impacts of the internet and information technology. We discuss why AI may not break the electricity system and the long history of anxiety over computing’s energy use. Shift Key is hosted by Robinson Meyer, executive editor of Heatmap, and Jesse Jenkins, a Princeton professor of energy systems engineering.

I cannot believe how fast misinformation spread about ai energy use like I get it you want to have ethical backing for your anti ai argument and discussions of things like “labor laws” and “copyright” are much more complicated than invoking global warming or the human soul but like jesus. It’s becoming very clear to me that most people don’t know how the internet or technology works at all.
#like im starting to think you guys don’t actually care about artists and just want to say shit…#most of the articles I’ve found abt this are either projections for if ai use keeps growing at its current rate (doubtful) or comparing it#to things like a single plane flight#the comparisons are never to smth like bitcoin mining or a city’s electricity or something actually on its scale#or even crediting ai with the increased amount of data centers like we haven’t needed more processing power As Humans with the more complex#shit online and being calculated by scientists rn#and all of this is only to train the model. not even to use it.#and like to be clear. I am an artist who has lost jobs to ai#but it’s here now and we have to think about living with it into the future#warlock wartalks

Against all odds, we have survived. We're taking a university course now, because the government will pay us for it and we do need the money, but it has unfortunately been eroding at our sanity somewhat, and we are learning nothing that we don't already know. We are, however, getting money.
We have somewhat of a backlog on Discord at the moment, as it doesn't have a daily upload limit and also it's easier to stick things on while we are being told things that we already know by people who are phrasing in in ways we find significantly misleading or incorrect (note: we don't use apps for things the vast majority of the time and if we access Tumblr via browser it immediately fucks up our formatting on PC, which can last several months). We will, hopefully, be posting these soon, but all is dependant on if we can actually scare up the time between courses to conglomerate that and fix any formatting errors in thoughts and such.
If that will happen any time soon... good question! Every time that our work practicum teacher opens her mouth, we take points of physical damage, and we don't think she understands the fact that getting back after we walk to a place also involves walking. We've had a lot going on for a while now and very little of it has been good. We're on new meds, and if the gods prove merciful, we won't have to tolerate this particular clown show past March. If there is no mercy to be found, however, we might have to keep doing this until June, in which case you can probably expect the quality of this to take a sharp downturn as the short time we have already spent in this program is already having immediate and catastrophic effects on our mental health.
We do not recommend going to university in any circumstances, but we are unfortunately aware that it may be necessary to get such things as a fancy piece of paper saying you are employable. Additionally, we would tell you to calibrate your expectations for anyone with a degree lower, but apparently what we consider the basic level of knowledge you should know before saying anything on any topic is everyone else's "bachelor degree and a bit", so our estimations on what people think is a high degree of knowledge to have are probably also off.
Any donations go to the Fund To Compensate Us For Having To Correct A Teacher Multiple Times In A Lecture And Then Looking Up Her Sources Later And Discovering They Are Blatant Misinformation. We are very tired. Please do research on things before talking about them. Thank you.
#we speak#not liveblog#necessary context: we have filed three different behavioral complaints this quarter and we highly suspect we will be filing more later#and if we did not need the money for this we would have dropped out already#we keep googling pieces of information that are mentioned in class and finding out they are incorrect or misleading#which as you can clearly see is not great for us#we pulled up an article on the ways that AI is actively poisoning data the other day because that is Often Relevant To Us#as well as a handful of articles around the hideous amounts of electricity and water it uses up#that we had on hand because it's Relevant To Us And The Things That We Care About Which Directly Affect Our Life#and we were told that our teacher didn't want us to talk about that because it made her feel bad for using ai#which we don't believe is something we can actually put in a formal report but it's sure going in our petty grievances bin#most of what we're actually putting in there is stuff we are likely to be able to actually get her on#such as lack of disability accommodation#hmm. this is rapidly becoming a rant. hopefully this sheds some light on our absence. we're getting into higher education#the only things currently keeping us sane are the presence of our fiance. and also getting into fountain pens#because they're something that we can actually carry into class and they overlap enough with areas of study we were previously interested i#that we can integrate learning very specific things about their mechanics and functionality into our general workflow#your mileage may vary if you are not already experiencing this particular brand of madness btw#but it does help when the pen we're using to doodle in lectures is something it actively feels Nice To Write With#our other non-practicum teacher is fine btw. his lectures are unbearably dull but he can't help that he's lecturing#on things that we already have large amounts of in-depth knowledge on#at least he's not actively spreading misleading information

someone explain why that last sentence absolutely broke me
#“AI aims to make computers more brain-like while OI aims to make brain cell cultures more computer-like” 🥹🥹#i am SOBBING#biocomputing biophysics and neuroscience have my whole heart#organoids are my new fav thing after monoclonal antibodies btw#random but an OI takeover sounds way scarier than an AI takeover bc firstly the organoids would have to become sentient (TERRIFYING)#secondly they would have to become more intelligent than humans (MORE TERRIFYING)#reason why it's so much scarier is we would have essentially created lifeforms that are superior to us#and there is literally nothing we can do about it#AI? put the electricity off or pour acid on them#OI? say your prayers#i would go on but this is tags not a post#shitpost?#shitpost#idk#random#😼

I really enjoyed early ai imaging it was cool seeing how a computer imagines things
heres some polar bears i asked an ai tool to make in 2021
They look more like mashed potato heaps but i can tell its digital hollow muscular circulatory organ was in the right place
#the first one looks like a cheeky eye-boogery white fluffy dog#Also i was very bad at using ai. i havent used it often currently so i can only assume i am still bad at it#i feel like ai art in some way can be an 'art' just for the effort needed to generate a coherent image#however i wouldnt say the person is an artist the robot is more of an artist than the guy typing '4k big boobed anime woman smoking pot'#That said i am not into ai at all. theres a bunch of ai server things in my town and now the electricity is 3x as much

I will once again state for the record that my issues with generative AI begin when money starts changing hands or individual artists are materially affected by the output of prompt jockeys (impersonation, etc) and I don't consider use of it otherwise to be a huge deal.
Lizard Brain gets jumpy about the idea of creative output being outsourced to machines but like. until neural nets become ACTUALLY intelligent, Smart Brain knows that there's no real replacement for a human being who can make real revisions and critique and adjustments and deliberate choices instead of an algorithm that places pixels down based on the data in its training set.
#spitblaze says things#and at THAT point i cant imagine that the creative output of real intelligent sentient ai would be anything close to human art#i wonder what a machine would create if it could#do robots dream of electric sheep etc#YES the datasets are unethical theres a lot of fucking issues with that. assuming that all got solved. this is my opinion#the gay sex cats are fine they make me uncomfy bc of lizard brain but i recognize that its not materially different than a complex photosho#i mean it is. but i feel like random internet photos are generally less egregious in use than. yknow. Artwork#dont ask me to elaborate this is a gut opinion not an informed academic take

where are people getting the idea that ai is bad because it takes a lot of electricity? feels like a holdover from their understanding of crypto.
#like crypto requires ever-increasing computing power#baked into the core concept#and you have crypto farms around the world famously using shit tons of electricity#ai is simply not that at all#op

any of those pokemon obsessed knuckleheads figure out why sometimes the AI in gen IV battle frontier just completely gives up
#idk maybe its just entirely random. i dont remember the ai using electric on ground/ground on flying etc so often though#usually at worst it'll just use a status move at a very unhelpful time#i know it freaks out sometimes if you take too long to be killed or you use status but other than that

i watched an 80s movie with my husband last night, for the nostalgia. The premise is that the guy buys his first personal computer to help him with his architecture drafting (keep in mind that in 1984 personal computers were still a novelty) and through a series of comical mishaps, the computer achieves a sort of sentience. It starts making its own music, which the guy's beautiful cellist neighbor overhears and falls in love with. At one point, when trying to figure out where the music is coming from (she thinks her neighbor is a closet composer), he asks her what she thinks about artificial intelligence creating music or art.
"What's wrong with artists?" she asks.
I've been thinking about that ever since.
#ai discussion#the movie is called Electric Dreams#it's a quintessential 80s movie and not great but a fun nostalgia trip#but this line stuck with me#and it hurts because it feels like a lot of people have just decided that artists aren't necessary anymore#that ai is enough#artists are looking at the possibility of their livelihood disappearing overnight#because corporations would rather use a computer program than pay artists for their hard-earned skills#yes i'm salty

oh yeah totally unrelated but guess who accidentally fried the motherboard on their laptop by trying to replace the broken hinges?
me.
#i was very upset over losing my files for a day or 2 but I'm kind of over it now#if you're wondering how i accidentally fried my motherboard I'm not entirely sure but it was probably static electricity 😔#anyway i bought a new one and I'm getting it delivered on monday#it was $1500 which ngl kinda hurt *but* the specs are better than my old one and it has more storage#i do think I'm going to buy an external storage thing and do weekly backups now since while stuff shouldve been going to my onedrive its-#been full for the last like 1.5 years so uhh yeah#anyway I'm more upset I'm going to have to re download my ~completely totally 100% legally purchased software~#also i had a 2 year long free clip studio thing from my tablet that i never claimed until earlier this year and uhh yeah that was only good#for one device and ngl i like the program and that's what ive been using since i claimed it and i don't really want to purchase it bc of-#recent stuff like them planning on switching to a subscription based thing when v 2 comes out or smthn and also the ai art thing so#yeah I've got stuff to think about lol#mine#text

It's old but here's a video from 8 years ago about one factor of it.
youtube
Some numbers from it:
The internet used 2% of the world's electricity in 2011
The internet used 91 billion kilowatt-hours in 2013 just in the US.
The internet data transfer rate was 28,000 gigabytes a second in 2013.
And those are numbers from over 10 years ago. I couldn't find any exact number but I see online advertising specifically uses the same amount of electricity as a small country these days.
And here's a study from 2018 about it if you want something long and crunchy.
From the highlight:
Online advertising consumed between 20.38 to 282.75 TWh of energy and 11.53 – 159.93 million tons of CO2e was emitted to produce the electricity consumed.
Of course there's no exact number as it's not recorded and, if it is, it's guarded (hence the wide range) but it's safe to say it uses a lot of electricity.
At least with TV commercials, they gave actors, directors, and screen writers a way into the film and TV industry and also employed a crew. There were even dedicated crews/houses for specific types of ads. They also had to be interesting or entertaining enough to draw attention given how many people used commercial breaks as bathroom/snack breaks and stopped paying attention to ads.
Sure they were trying to sell you something but at least there were others who were getting a paycheque and building up a resume from them. The more successful or viral an ad went (and going viral before the internet was a big thing), the better it was for the cast and crew and more than a few celebs got their start from a commercial or three.
Not so much now, especially when the whole ad is just CGI. They aren't interesting or entertaining and the production value is low to keep the costs down on that end. If an ad is more than lukewarm, odds are it was designed for TV first because internet advertising is all about quantity over quality.
honestly advertising is so fukcing wasteful not even just in the convincing you to buy shit you never actually wanted but like
how much electricity is wasted displaying ads that could've gone to keeping houses warm. How much paper is produced just to be turned into pamphlets and ads that will just be thrown away. how much internet bandwith is wasted just on the amount of ads that are on the internet nowadays. How many hours worth of labor went into producing ads that are going directly into my adblocker or my waste bin that could've been time spent doing literally ANYTHING useful?
#i roll my eyes so hard at ads that are trying to pretend someone is a streamer#at least it employs a person but it's staring into a camera and reading a corporate copy#usually on a bland and boring set because why bother buying/renting props#and llms and generative ai is already making things worse#even fewer people are directly involved and llms/generative ai uses a fuckton of electricity#we're not up to crypto levels... yet#but there's not no impact from it#and those numbers predate llms/ai and i don't know know if they would even account for them if they did#because companies are very cagey about that sort of thing#and would invite government investigations and regulations if it was common knowledge#crypto farms largely got attention because they got greedy and moved too fast#and also made headlines due to scalping gpus and the chip shortage#also focusing on a handful of areas rather than spreading things out#don't make waves; spread the impact out; set up shell companies to obfuscate#i'd bet dollars to doughnuts that that's what advertising firms are doing#because if a data centre's usage goes up 5-10% that won't draw attention#usage going up over 50% in a year makes people notice and get concerned#but iirc over 40% of internet traffic is bots and ads now#and the closest thing to ads of old are probably the shorts for content farms#which are exempt from safety standards and regulations because they're 'user-generated content'#so you get ones promoting mustard gas or fractal wood-burning that can and do kill people#and the only way to pull them is to report them to the company instead of fcc or other regulatory body#and companies tend to not want to do that since those videos make them money#and they sure as shit don't want to have a content farm consider leaving the platform#not when content farms make up the bulk of daily activity and the company makes a pretty penny off of ads on the content farm's videos#Youtube
