Why India’s IT Sector Is Stumbling?
Hey there! So, imagine this scenario: you’re sipping your coffee. You’re scrolling through your phone, and you see a headline. It’s about India’s IT giants—like TCS, Wipro, and Infosys—hitting a rough patch. You’ve probably heard how India’s been this massive tech hub for years, right? Coding, outsourcing, all that jazz. But lately, things aren’t looking so shiny. I’ve been digging into this, and…

Appen is still her sole source of income. Pay ranges from 2.2 cents to 50 cents per task, Fuentes says. Typically, an hour and a half of work will bring in $1. When there are enough tasks to work a full week, she earns approximately $280 per month, almost meeting Colombia’s minimum wage of $285. But filling out a week with tasks is rare, she says. Down days, which have become increasingly common, will bring in no more than $1 to $2. Fuentes works on a laptop from her bed, glued to her computer for over 18 hours a day to get the first pick of tasks that could arrive at any time. Given Appen’s international clients, days begin when the tasks come out, which can mean 2 am starts.
It’s a pattern that’s being repeated across the developing world. Labeling hot spots in east Africa, Venezuela, India, the Philippines, and even refugee camps in Kenya and Lebanon’s Shatila camps offer cheap labor. Workers pick up microtasks for a few cents each on platforms like Appen, Clickworker, and Scale AI, or sign onto short-term contracts in physical data centers like Sama’s 3,000-person office in Nairobi, Kenya, which was the subject of a Time investigation into the exploitation of content moderators. The AI boom in these places is no coincidence, says Florian Schmidt, author of Digital Labour Markets in the Platform Economy. “The industry can flexibly move to wherever the wages are lowest,” he says, and can do it far quicker than, for example, textile manufacturers.

AI exploits people of color in the global south.

DeepSeek Censors Tiananmen Square, West Philippine Sea, and Taiwan
A few days ago, DeepSeek was released in China which caused shockwaves to the Generative AI community. Claiming to be able to develop the LLM at a considerably cheaper price, NVidia stock price immediately plummeted around 17%, dragging stocks across the Semiconductor Sector along with it. We tested DeepSeek and how it responded to politically charged questions. It seems that the response is actively being censored on some key issues such as those involving the West Philippine Sea, Tiananmen Square, and Taiwan. However, the censorship comes a few seconds after the actual response is rendered.

woo I've got 3 of 4 crochet projects done! I'm taking a quick break before i return to the final one, but here's what I've been working on for the past month!
brief explanation: a friend of mine talked me into putting together some crochet stuff for the fiber arts part of my local fair! all submissions are due may 26th (including photography and art, which I'm going to figure out after I'm done with my crochet work) so I've been scrambling ever since finishing up with my dcrb stuff
the first of the projects is an elephant themed handbag. it's technically a bit of a collab with a friend of mine who came up with the initial idea and is going to be dealing with the interfacing and the lining, so I'm going to have to sort out how to represent that in the submission but

here's what it will look like, minus the ears, tail, and feet. i photographed it before sending it off to her! i also made a trial bag ahead of time

i also made this to trial run my design ideas. it's got some major flaws though i do actually like the head shape more lol even though I spent a LOT of time trying to make the final one work properly.

project 2 is these parols! if you're unfamiliar, an actual parole is a star-shaped paper lantern made in the philippines as a christmas decoration. now i can't make paper lanterns but i can make these, which i did, based off of a design i worked out last Christmas to make some as a gift for my mom. most of these were made using lily sugar and cream yarn which was a Huge Mistake lol.
project 3, which i actually finished a while ago before finishing up the parols are these...things. it's a bit tricky to explain but basically i made these both for fun and as an experiment to test out the capabilities and limitations of chatgpt. if you're somewhat familiar with me, you'll know I'm a programmer by career. which means i have to keep abreast of technological developments NOT because i need them for my job, but because i WILL get pestered by other people who think i know the answer (a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy, that). plus, machine learning is a bit fun cause it's a) it's fun to see it flop and flail around cause it doesn't actually know shit and b) it's a fascinating reflection of the world we've created and the failures and limitations of the structures we create to define and control it.
which is to say that i asked it for various patterns with varying levels of specificity and oversight and crocheted what it gave me with varying levels of "forgiveness" (damn thing doesn't even tell me where to sew or attach things most of the time). IF my submission is accepted, I'm hoping they'll let me submit some explanations to go with lol. and also after finishing the last pattern, which i generated maybe 2 weeks ago, I've finished off the project in solidarity with WGA and the newly unionized "AI" content moderators.
(the most powerful tool i think i have personally is my ability to explain why chatgpt and it's siblings are so limited in their ability and why people ought to be careful implementing them in any meaningful way)
so now that I've adequately proved that i am not a tech bro, actually. observe: my children
the absolutely comical moray eel

i requested a separate jaw piece and that it be long and thin. it gave me this in the silliest way possible.

yes the fins are all wrong and the body is weirdly twisted. i don't know why it gave me a trapezoidal panel. it didn't even tell me to make a tube out of it or how but idk what else i couldve possibly done. anyway, i love him
next, a small collection of flowers.

one looks like a sunny side up egg but pink. chat gpt claimed the one on the left was specifically supposed to be a rose, which is genuinely funny. it's a flower doily, at best, and not even a good one at that.
poppy, orange

im actually quite impressed by these, especially the poppy petals and the leaf of the orange (though the orange is rather flat... i squished it in a bit for the sake of the picture. also check out that stem. wild.)
mystery patterns 1 and 2

these were supposed to resemble actual things, when i was done with them. they do not.
my beloved pill quail

the pattern actually had the dots misaligned because it miscounted the number of stitches in the round, making the instructions mathematically impossible. for the sake of not accidentally creating a physical impossibility and plunging the world into a spontaneously generated black hole, i decided to fix it instead. though that didn't stop my poor quail from literally being capsule shaped, having coffin shaped wings, and the largest quail beak ever. i actually was very specific about this pattern and had to ask it for modifications and answer regenerations a lot (if you do this, you'll find that the average crochet pattern it makes is JUST outside the bounds of it's character limit), so the fact it turned out so funny looking will never not be hilarious to me
mushrooms

for the first, it actually just gave me a panel for the stem, but not cylindrifying it made no sense. for the second it literally just gave me two balls but the nature of crochet balls is you can kinda squish them into shapes.
the "flower basket"

i asked it for an idea to put into the fair, it gave me the flower basket—a small, deflated ball. 10/10. the biggest failure, which is why I love it so
the water lily

it did not adequately tell me how to put the petals onto the circular back panel (which it called the flower). I'd say what i did is probably what it was going for, but it's literally incapable of going for anything. that's not how text predictive models work. and fun fact! no water lily patterns on the internet look like this
self-representation

if chatgpt looked like a little crochet guy, it would look like this, according to it. (once you get past it insisting that if has no visible/physical form) apologies for the very mediocre glasses—i did not get into this hobby to embroider. i am very specifically not good at that. also it's feet were literally too big to have it NOT be sitting. and i did ask for the size safety eyes i should use, which is why they're so small lmfao
and finally:

Ert the hedgehog. it told me i COULD add spikes by using a crochet hook to add yarn at the top of its head. it did not tell me how. so i did that...for at LEAST as much time as it took to make the rest of it. Ert is my newest scapegoat whenever i have a problem. also i forgot to style his spikes for this photo lmaoo
bonus:

#new post#crochetposting#i think i shall put any crochet related projects in that tag now#ok I'm gonna zone out for a bit and then get back to project 4#i was at work nearly 12 hours yesterday so I'd like a bit of a break lol

Modern Missions and Maritime Moves: Unpacking Recent Navy News Around the Globe

The ocean has always been a dynamic theater of strategy, power, and diplomacy. In 2025, that hasn’t changed—but the technologies, threats, and tactics certainly have. If you’ve been tracking recent navy news, you’ll know that navies around the world are undergoing major shifts. From climate missions and submarine warfare to AI-powered fleets and new geopolitical alignments, today’s naval forces are redefining their purpose and posture.
Submarine Activity Making Waves
One of the most notable developments in global naval movements this year is the rapid increase in submarine deployments. Both traditional and nuclear-powered submarines have been making headlines—particularly in areas like the South China Sea, the Arctic, and the Mediterranean.
China has bolstered its submarine presence with a mix of conventional diesel-electric submarines and newer nuclear-powered vessels. Meanwhile, NATO allies have responded with increased patrols. France, the U.S., and the UK have carried out joint exercises focusing on submarine detection and tracking, underscoring the growing importance of undersea warfare.
Even smaller navies are investing in this capability. Indonesia and Vietnam have recently added submarines to their fleets, seeking to better protect maritime borders and increase their deterrent power in contested waters.
Artificial Intelligence Onboard
Automation and AI are no longer experimental in naval operations—they’re operational. Modern warships now carry onboard systems that help with threat detection, data analysis, and even basic decision-making.
For example, the U.S. Navy's new Constellation-class frigates will be equipped with AI-assisted radar systems capable of distinguishing false positives from real threats within seconds. This makes missile defense more effective and reduces the need for constant human monitoring.
AI is also making its way into logistics. Naval supply chains are increasingly using machine learning to forecast maintenance schedules, predict equipment failure, and streamline cargo loading for rapid deployment. This is proving especially useful during disaster relief missions and combat readiness operations alike.
Arctic Expansion and Melting Ice Frontiers
Melting ice in the Arctic has created new shipping routes, territorial disputes, and resource opportunities. Russia, with its extensive northern coastline, has taken the lead in establishing a permanent naval presence in the Arctic. It has reopened Cold War-era bases and deployed icebreaker-equipped patrol vessels to assert sovereignty over the Northern Sea Route.
In response, other nations have stepped up their Arctic policies. The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy have increased operations in the region, and Norway has unveiled a new fleet of ice-capable ships built specifically for high-latitude patrols.
This shift is not just about defense—it’s about climate and commerce. With trillions of dollars in natural resources beneath the ice and potential for faster trade routes, naval activity in the Arctic is expected to remain in the headlines for years to come.
Naval Humanitarian Response Grows
One positive trend seen in recent navy news is the expanded role of naval forces in humanitarian operations. From delivering aid during natural disasters to supporting evacuation missions in conflict zones, modern navies are being equipped and trained for rapid response.
The Philippines Navy played a key role in distributing relief supplies after Typhoon Bising devastated coastal provinces. Similarly, the Royal Australian Navy recently provided firefighting equipment and medical aid to Pacific Island nations affected by volcanic activity and drought.
To accommodate these missions, several countries have retrofitted older vessels to serve as hospital ships or floating logistics hubs. These upgrades reflect a broader understanding of naval power—not only as a force of deterrence but also as a tool for resilience and humanitarian support.
Drone Fleets Take to the Seas
Naval drone programs have expanded significantly. Surface drones, underwater vehicles, and aerial surveillance drones are now deployed regularly for both reconnaissance and active defense.
Israel has deployed autonomous surface vehicles in the Mediterranean to monitor suspicious activity near offshore gas rigs. The U.S. Navy has tested swarms of small drones that can overwhelm and confuse enemy defenses, mimicking attacks while feeding data back to central command.
These platforms are cost-effective, reduce human risk, and can operate in environments that would be too dangerous or remote for manned ships. Their versatility is helping even medium-sized navies enhance their maritime presence without massive investments.
Political Oversight and Ethical Tensions
Not all news has been celebratory. With increased investments in naval technologies and private-sector collaboration, ethical questions have surfaced. Oversight into naval contracts, labor practices, and spending is tightening as governments respond to past scandals and public demand for transparency.
Several recent investigations have examined failures in ship maintenance, cost overruns, and fraud by defense subcontractors. The implications go beyond wasted budgets—lapses in quality or oversight can risk lives and compromise national security.
An example making headlines involves allegations of contractor misconduct tied to the maintenance of naval vessels—an issue detailed in this recent navy news report that raised questions about safety protocols, accountability, and the balance between public and private responsibility in military operations.
International Cooperation Still a Priority
Despite rising tensions in some regions, many navies are still committed to partnership and cooperation. Joint maritime exercises, anti-piracy operations, and search-and-rescue drills continue to bring together ships from diverse backgrounds.
India and France conducted a successful joint patrol in the Indian Ocean, while ASEAN navies participated in cross-border maritime safety exercises. These collaborations help build trust, promote interoperability, and ensure open communication during crises.
They also demonstrate how naval forces can be a stabilizing force—even in areas where political relations remain fragile.
Conclusion
Naval power is changing—not just in terms of firepower, but in purpose, scope, and capability. Whether it's drones monitoring the Arctic, humanitarian missions in the Pacific, or ethical questions around defense contracting, the sea remains a mirror for the world’s shifting priorities and tensions.
By analyzing recent navy news, we gain insight into the policies, partnerships, and technologies that will define maritime security in the years ahead. For those seeking in-depth reporting on these topics, The Veza remains a reliable source connecting complex defense issues with real-world implications.

In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 7192, also known as the "Women in Development and Nation Building Act," granted women the right to serve in the military, including combat and frontline duties, and attend military schools like the Philippine Military Academy. This law, passed in 1993, opened the doors for women to become cadets and serve in all branches of the military.

On 10 February 2025, a young girl was allegedly attacked and murdered inside a school in Daejeon, South Korea.[3]
On that day itself, the police responded to a report that an eight-year-old girl went missing after she never showed up for her after-school programme, and the girl attended a school located at the western part of Daejeon. After a search, the missing girl was later found inside an audiovisual room with stab wounds on her neck and face, together with a female teacher in her 40s, who also had stab wounds on her body.[4][5]
Both the teacher and girl were rushed to hospital, but upon her arrival, the eight-year-old girl died. The teacher, who was hospitalized for stab wounds on her neck and arm, was placed under arrest as a suspect behind the girl's death. A police spokesperson also said that the teacher was formerly on a leave of absence due to depression before she returned to her job in late 2024, and it was found that prior to the killing, the suspect had bought a knife at a store near the school during her lunch break and the possible motivations behind the attack was likely due to anger over being banned from teaching.

How do we achieve equality of sexes in today's modern world?
By: Cuyos, Prince Arthor M. (GE 1213 16-248)
Gender equality remains one of our time's most pressing human rights issues. Despite significant progress in women's empowerment, the World Economic Forum estimates it will take another century to close the economic gender gap at current rates. In the Philippines, where I've witnessed cultural disregard for women and systemic barriers to their advancement, this challenge takes on another unique extent. From corporate offices to rural farming communities, achieving true equality requires addressing deeply rooted social norms, economic disparity, and political underrepresentation. Drawing from global practices and lessons from Philippine history, including those of José Rizal, the pathway toward achieving gender equality can include legal reforms, financial empowerment, cultural transformation, and political inclusion.
While the Philippines has some progressive laws, implementation remains inconsistent across regions. We should look to models that require companies to prove they pay employees equally for equal work. Expanding legal protections to cover emerging issues like cyber harassment and AI-based discrimination. Economic independence also forms the base of gender equality. In the Philippines, women comprise half the workforce but work low-wage jobs in retail and hospitality. We must scale up programs that implement corporate policies supporting working mothers, including flexible work arrangements and returnship programs for women re-entering the workforce. Financial literacy programs tailored for women entrepreneurs could further bridge the economic gap, particularly in rural areas where microenterprises dominate.
Furthermore, deeply ingrained cultural stereotypes continue to hinder progress toward equality. Changing these narratives requires a multifaceted approach, with media representation mattering a lot. We need more content showcasing women in leadership roles and men as engaged caregivers. Schools must also integrate gender studies across all levels, moving beyond the "women's month" activities to drive feminist perspectives in the curriculum. Religious institutions, influential in Philippine society, should be engaged as partners in promoting egalitarian interpretations of scripture and tradition.
True equality remains unattainable without equal political voice. Despite the Philippines' history of female presidents, women hold only a small portion of congressional seats and mayoral positions. We should build on this by establishing leadership academies for aspiring female politicians and implementing stricter penalties for gender-based election violence. Local governments could further boost participation by creating gender-sensitive civic education programs and reserving slots for women in development councils.
The path to gender equality demands coordinated action across all sectors of society. From strengthening legal protections to transforming cultural narratives, each strategy creates a system where women and men can thrive equally. As a student witnessing Filipino women's struggles and triumphs in our community, I'm convinced that change is possible when we combine policy reforms with personal accountability. The classrooms where girls now outperform boys, the courtrooms where more VAWC cases are prosecuted, and the homes where young couples share childcare duties equally. These are the battlegrounds where true equality will be won. While the challenge is vast, our collective action today will determine whether future generations inherit a world of equal opportunity or continued disparity.
