This may be an unpopular opinion, but I really despise using generative ai in any way shape of form in fandom.

I don't really care if you use it for your school essay or asking stupid questions as this is none of my business, however I do hate how AI fanart, fanfics and character ai chat bots became a little to popular.

I can see that most people doing this are doing it for fun and don't take it seriously at all (which is fine), I just wanna give my two cents to that topic to see if I'm just going crazy or if I'm the only one feeling iffy about this topic.

that's why michael Kovach talked about it when he realized some idiot fuckers on reddit (not exactly reddit, but in general yk there's lots of lazy ai fuckers on reddit) were lazily ai-synthetizing (aka making ai covers with) his voice, to fake being him or something like that.

the people being ai-synthetized don't consent to it. vocaloid/synthV/UTAU voice provoders DO consent to being sampled.

if Crypton Future Media (for example) contacted michael and asked him nicely to collaborate and build a vocaloid together, and he DID voice a vocaloid, it wouldn't be ai-synthetizing because michael consented and the entire thing has to be adjusted long hours to one's liking.

learn the fucking difference ffs.

i swear to god people need to learn the difference between ai generated voice and vocal synth. mastering the art of a vocal synth is hard. you have to tune that shit yourself. you have to edit the vocals and do it all yourself. it takes hours to get a synth to sing a song well. when people make covers of songs with miku they are not just imputing a song and boom she sings it. not like how people do with ai. also, vocal synths were created specifically to assist musicians who struggle with finding vocalists (hiring a vocalist is fucking expensive) or cant provide vocals on their own. vocal synths are instruments and tools that one needs to learn and master, and they get their voice providers from people who 100% consented to having their vocals used. hatsune miku is not ai. using vocaloid or synthv or utau is not anything like lazily ai generating a voice at all. grow the fuck up.

AI fanfiction? Ffs!

I recently found a fanfic obviously written entirely by ChatGPT. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would “write” something that is purely for the fun of writing it using AI. I can somewhat understand if people use it to write stuff that can be considered “work”, even if I’m personally against using it for any kind of writing, but FANFICTION? I have a lot of respect for anyone who actually writes, whether it’s something I personally enjoy reading or not. This shit, however, earns my contempt.

Bit of a long video but worth a watch.

TL;DW though is that hidden in the Terms and Conditions for Google's AI Labs is a nice little poison pill that says they get access to your entire Google Drive if you opt in.

So if you're an author of some type and you keep your unpublished works in your G-Drive that means an AI will get to scrape all of it and by opting in you will have given them permission to it. The content creator goes on to predict that Google is going to let out their own streaming service where the scripts, and potentially the art if it's animated, will be almost or entirely AI generated using that scraped data as a baseline and the authors/artist's who's work was essentially stolen in its most raw form to crib from will have zero way of fighting Google on that in our current legal system.

This is of course right in the middle of the writers and actors strike where we're seeing just what lengths studios will go to in order to screw everyone but themselves.

They go on to recommend that if you keep any creative or personal works on Google Drive that you pull it off as soon as possible and delete your entire Drive. They acknowledge that of course this doesn't mean Google really deleted the data but if you do it before they start compulsory opting everyone in there's a chance your work might get overlooked. They also recommend several free editing programs that aren't run by corporations like Google with LibreOffice (the default office program of most Linux distros) being named.

Finally they go over methods of shaming Google which I feel like you just have to watch for comedies sake so I won't describe them in full.

Now this is from me: I know the majority of people don't have the ability to build and manage a big archive just for themselves, but if you're a creative NOW IS THE TIME to educate yourself on what you can do to protect your works. Cloud storage was always iffy at best, but with AI scraping entering the mix it's now downright malignant. Get a bunch of thumb drives, buy some external hard drives, if you have the money buy a pre-built NAS, and if you really want to get into learn how to build your own NAS. These are the old ways before cloud and they're coming back again, more important than ever.
