Eugh... Getting grounded by weather is the worst... I once got stuck in Vancouver overnight bc they got 1 cm of snow... 1 CM!!!! Wtf?! This is Canada people!!

This made me snort! 🤣 Yeah, if Canada can't handle 1 CM of snow, Texas certainly has no hope! That said, it has more to do with visibility and possible icing on the wings than the amount of snowball. Not me whiling away an afternoon becoming an expert on what weather conditions cause flight delays.

Sooo..... I googled what European country gets the most snow and several sources told me it was: (du du duuuun!)

Which lead me to researching the climate there (negative 30 degrees Fahrenheit is normal in the winter 🫥🥶). From there I took a little poetic license (or chalk it up to Max being dramatic). I could find no definitive answer about the most blizzards, but they definitely get the most snow.

Hahaha. I stayed at a hotel once that had a theater in it (two actually, although one was more of a resort). But I googled over the top amenities luxury hotels might have and that's how I found out some hotel chefs give cooking lessons to the guests!!!

A/N: Listen. I had an idea for the @choicesprompts #rewritechallenge holiday edition. I had the whole scene in my head, but then I decided it needed a little lead-up. Then I decided the lead-up needed a lead-up and then these characters completely just took over, threw my script out the window, and took a whole detour to examine a little budding romance between Liam and Max when this story was supposed to be focused on Drake and Riley (and it still is, mostly).

Long story short, it got a little out of hand so I have split it into two chapters. I'm tagging all of the following:

@choicesprompts rewrite challenge, holiday edition TRR x Untamed Heart (one of my all-time favorite movies). @choicesficwriterscreations holiday prompt: Stuck together in the snow; @choicesdecember2023 Christmas and @choicesholidays: This is the worst Christmas ever.

“Goodbye, Mrs. Lassiter, have a pleasant stay!” Riley waved with a smile painted on her face as the last passenger debarked. The smile faded from her face as the guests disappeared down the jet bridge and her eyes took in the heavy snowfall blanketing the runway.

Max noticed her despondent expression. “You okay, Ri?”

She turned toward her best friend and coworker with a sigh. “Remind me again why I volunteered to work this flight?”

“Uh…because your sister is getting married in less than two months, and you needed the overtime to pay for the ridiculous over-the-top bachelorette party she wants.”

“Right. Amelia,” Riley nodded to herself, “I’m doing this for her.”

“I think you do too much for her, Ri,” Max clucked at her like a mother hen, “She takes advantage of your generous nature.”

“Oh, Max, it’s fine. You only get married once!”

He arched an eyebrow at her.

“Okay,” a giggle burst out of her, “Hopefully, she only gets married once!”

“Frankly, I’m surprised she found anyone willing to marry her. Is there something wrong with him?”

“Max!” Riley laughed as she thumped him playfully on the shoulder before turning serious. “I just hope we’re able to take off tomorrow as planned.” Tomorrow was Christmas Eve, and she had promised her mother she’d be home so she could spend Christmas day with her parents and siblings.

“I wouldn’t count on it.”

Riley turned toward the voice to find the pilot striding toward them. Captain Liam Rys stopped in front of the flight attendants to announce, “There’s a blizzard headed straight for us.”

“Maybe we could just fly out right now—” Riley started hopefully.

“That’s a negative,” Liam cut her off, “that would put me over my flight limit for the day. We’ll proceed to the hotel as planned and hope for the best but be prepared to spend Christmas here.”

“Remind me why you agreed to fly into Estonia, the blizzard capital of the world, two days before Christmas?” Max grumbled.

Liam’s eyes flicked to him in annoyance. “Because of the obscene amount of money Mr. Lassiter was willing to pay for me to do so. You’ll thank me when you get your next paycheck and there’s a substantial bonus on it, on top of the holiday bonus you just received.”

“It’s okay,” Max shrugged with a tinge of disappointment in his tone, “My brother is in Japan anyway.”

Liam’s expression softened a little. “I’m sure he wishes he could spend Christmas with you.”

“Well, he’s flying with Leo, which he loves. I’m just disappointed that we’re almost never assigned to the same flight.”

Liam averted his eyes, unwilling to tell Max that was on purpose. Bertrand had requested that Max not be on the same flight as himself after the younger Beaumont’s enthusiasm became embarrassing for him. Max had gushed to a passenger about his pride in his older sibling, proudly articulating that, “My brother’s the co-pilot. He’s really good at it. He’s almost good enough to be the pilot!”

Liam shuffled his feet awkwardly, then nodded at Max, “Yes, well…. See you at the hotel.”

“You will?” Max’s head whipped around in surprise. Liam had never expressed an interest in seeing him outside of work before.

“Well, he was a little snippy,” Riley observed as Liam disappeared down the sky bridge.

“But did he seem….I don’t know…interested in-“ a flush crawled up his neck and then flared across his face, “Never mind. Of course not.”

Riley’s brow furrowed. “Interested in what?”

“Nothing. Let’s just get this cabin cleaned up so we can go.”

Riley awoke the next morning to sheets of snow pouring from the sky, blanketing the city in white as far as she could see from her hotel window. Which wasn’t that far. The snow was coming down too fast and too thick for her to see past the parking lot.

“Shit!” She aggressively pulled the curtains closed and dove back under the covers.

“So, what have you two been up to all day?” Liam asked as the four-member flight crew sat down for dinner in the hotel restaurant.

“Well, I slept in, then I called my mom to let her know I wouldn’t be making it home today and probably not tomorrow either. Then I drown my sorrows in a steaming hot bubble bath.” Riley responded as she pulled the menu over to her.

“Yeah, but then we saw a movie,” Max reminded her. Turning to Liam, he rambled excitedly, “This hotel has a theater in it. There was popcorn and everything! And then we took a cooking class! Can you believe that? The hotel chef hosts a class here once a week, but they did an extra class today because it snowed everyone in.”

Liam smiled at Max’s enthusiasm. “That sounds like fun. Now I feel boring. I read all day. Drake, what about you?”

“What about me?” Drake was busy shoveling a complimentary roll into his mouth.

Riley laughed. “Have you not been listening to the conversation? He wants to know what you did to keep busy today, you dork.”

Drake grabbed his water glass and chugged the cold liquid down to cover the fact that he had not heard a word of the conversation since Riley stopped talking. He was still picturing her in that bubble bath. When he sat the glass down, he responded, “I did my usual morning workout. The gym here is excellent. Since I couldn’t go for a run, I hit the heavy bags and then swam a few laps.”

“How many is a few?” Max asked.

“Twenty.” Drake’s eyes flicked to Max as he answered before landing quickly back on Riley’s face searching for any clue that she was impressed, or at least interested in him.

Not that he cared. She was a coworker, and he didn’t date coworkers.

“All before lunch?” She raised an eyebrow.

He wasn’t sure if she found his morning activities impressive or stupid. Her expression gave away nothing. “I find it hard to sit still,” he answered.

Liam scoffed, “You sit in the cockpit for hours at a time.”

“First of all, that’s different. I’m doing plenty as you well know and second of all, that’s why I need more physical movement when I’m on the ground.”

“Makes sense to me!” Max nodded emphatically as the waitress arrived with the menus.

They ordered their food and ate while making companionable chit chat. After dinner, Max suggested they continue the night across the lobby.

The hotel bar was crowded. The four coworkers quickly parted in the crowd. Drake and Liam navigated to a small table in the back and ordered drinks.

“You don’t want to ask her to dance?” Liam nodded across the room to the dance floor where Max and Riley were laughing and twirling to the music.

Drake followed Liam’s eyes and froze as he watched her sway and shimmy to the thump of heavy base. “I don’t dance.”

“I’ve seen you dance.”

“Not well.”

“So, you’re worried about embarrassing yourself in front of her?”

“What? No!” Drake reached for the tumbler of single malt scotch as the server placed it on the table in front of him and took a long pull as his mind spun with ways to shift the conversation away from his nonexistent love life. “What’s going on with you and Max?”

Liam startled so hard that bourbon sloshed over the rim of his glass. He stared at Drake in a blind panic. “What do you mean?”

“I mean….you usually pay no attention to what the flight attendants are doing when we have layovers. Yet you invited everyone to dinner tonight and you’re the one that was watching them dance. I’m pretty sure you’re not into Riley because if you were, you wouldn’t be pushing me toward her. So that leaves Max. Tell me I’m wrong.”

He lowered his glass to the table with a sigh. “It’s that obvious?”

“To me, but I’ve known you for a long time, Li.”

Liam blew out a long breath. “Shit.”

“Why don’t you just tell him you’re interested?”

“No,” Liam shook his head vigorously, “I can’t do that!”

“Why not?”

“So many reasons! Starting with the fact that I’m his boss and that’s a sexual harassment suit waiting to happen.”

“Not if he likes you back,” Drake countered.

“That’s not likely.”

Again, Drake asked, “Why not?”

Liam scoffed as he gestured toward the dance floor. “I mean, look at him! He’s fun and popular and hilariously funny. And look at those dance moves! He’s interesting and cool. What could he possibly see in me?”

“Hey, don’t sell yourself short, man.”

“I’m a stick in the mud and you know it. I was the president of my debate team. He was the lead in his school’s production of Beetle Juice.”

“How do you know- “

“Bertrand told me.”

“So, you’ve been pumping his brother for information?”

“Not the point. He’s amazing and fun and talented and I’m….me.”

“Liam, come on, man, you-“

“When I was twelve, I read law books for fun.”

“Geez, okay. Never mind. You’re definitely going to die alone.”

“Shut up,” Liam laughed, “I know you think I’m being dramatic.“

“You fly planes for a living,” Drake reminded him. “In my experience, a lot of people find that sexy.”

“Yes, well, I know your experience is quite extensive in that area but-“

“Are you calling me a man whore?”

“If the shoe fits….” Liam muttered into his drink.

“Insult me all you want, but it isn’t going to change the fact that you’ve got it bad. You should just tell him.”

“Oh, okay, Mr. I don’t like Riley.”

Fuck. Drake took another long drink. The conversation had come full circle. His eyes drifted across the room to find her again. She was still with Max.

Riley led Max off the dance floor and to a table as she flagged down a server for some water. “What’s up with you tonight?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, you’ve been acting squirely all night and you keep looking around like you’re searching for somebody. What’s that about?”

Max flushed, “Ah….I think I might have a thing for Liam.”

“Wait…what?” Riley shrieked, then clapped her hands over her mouth.

“I don’t know….” Max dropped his eyes to the table. “I mean, you know, he’s hot or whatever.”

“Max!” She slapped his shoulder. “Since when? And why didn’t you tell me?”

He shrugged. “Just recently I’ve started to notice him more, that’s all. He’s always being nice to me and- “

“He’s nice to everyone.”

“I know, but it’s more than that! I can’t explain it, okay? It’s just…the way he looks at me sometimes….”

“I have never seen you act shy before! You hit on that model last week!”

“Oh, him? Yeah, but that was just--”

“That man is an international star, and you had zero qualms asking for his snap.”

“I know, but- “

“And he gave it to you!”

“Sure, but Liam isn’t just a pretty face, Riley! He’s so fucking smart and serious. He’s sophisticated, and there’s just no way he’d be into a goofball like me.”

“Ah, Maxey, anyone with half a brain would be into you.”

“You’re just saying that because you’re my best friend.”

“Yes. But also because it’s true.”

“No, it’s not. I’m the general fuckup in my family. Just ask Bertrand. Or my father.”

“Max, you’re not a fuckup!” Riley admonished. “You’re just different from your brother and father, thank God! I’m sorry, I know you love him, but Bertrand is the most boring man alive, and your father is a dick, so please don’t judge yourself by his opinion of you.”

“Bert’s not boring. He just had to grow up fast. My father put a lot of pressure on him and he, unlike me, rose to the challenge. I mean, look at us. He’s a pilot and I’m a flight attendant. Do you remember what my father said when I told him I wanted to be a flight attendant?”

“Yes, but on the bright side, it was the first time he acknowledged your sexual orientation.”

Max snorted, “That’s not funny, Riley.”

“You laughed.”

He bumped her shoulder with his own with an amused shake of his head, “If your point is that my father is a homophobic, controlling, abusive asshole whose opinion should mean nothing to me or anyone else with a lick of self-respect, then point taken.” He lifted his glass to her.

She lifted hers and tapped it into his with a grin. “My work here is done. Now go over there and ask him to shoot darts or something.”

“All right, well, this has been fun, but I’m going up to bed now.” Liam pushed away from the table and stood up, stretching as he did so.

“You really are a stick in the mud,” Drake laughed as the server cleared their table and asked if he could get them anything else. “Yeah, an unopened bottle of what we’ve been drinking tonight.”

Liam turned to go but froze as a voice that sent heat shocking through him spoke, “Hey…Liam….you wanna…go play darts or something?”

He turned to find Max smiling at him. Trying to push down the rising panic in his throat, his eyes flicked to Drake, who just gave him an amused smile, then back to Max, who looked uncharacteristically nervous. “Uh…. sure.”

“Great!” Relief washed across Max’s features. Then he remembered himself and begrudgingly turned to include Drake in the invitation. “Would you like to join us?”

“Nah, I’m good. You two go ahead. I’ve got a bottle of top-shelf whiskey, and this hotel has steak on their room service menu. I’ll be fine.”

“Okay then, goodnight and Merry Christmas,” Liam didn’t meet Drake’s eyes as he waved bye and then followed Max to the dart boards lined up against the far wall.

Drake chuckled to himself as he took the bottle from the server and thrust a handful of bills at him. He started for the door, then thought better of it and backtracked to the bar, reaching across and grabbing a clean tumbler to take to his room with him.

He had to dodge a bunch of drunk people on his way back, causing him to veer off course until he was damn near on the other side of the room.

It wasn’t so much that he saw her as he felt her presence. His head lifted and his eyes somehow went straight to her despite the dozen or so people between him and the table she was seated at. Without making a conscious decision, his body angled in her direction, and he made his way over to her, reminding himself the whole way that he didn’t get involved with coworkers.

San Marino Totally feels like something you’d see on an awards show but with tons of pyro. Maybe the most polished entry from San Marino. Taking advantage of the pre-recorded backing vocals.

Estonia This is boring. I’m not an anti-ballad person, BTW. I don’t like video inserts.

Czech Republic It’s like everything I hated about this song got hidden. I still don’t like the song though.

Greece Not fond of these types of presentations. Also, I missed a lot of this because my living room is doubling as someone else’s office right now so I’m a little bit pissed off.

Austria I know this guy’s had a rough year. This song is appropriately sad. A lot better live.

Poland Oh, one of those throwback retro songs. Another song that seems to be taking advantage of prerecorded backing vocals. Very mid-80s sound with early 90s aesthetic. Just sort of the same thing over and over though.

Moldova More of this aesthetic — like a lot of the staging has been inspired by screensavers. Fun but blending in.

Iceland Poor pre-recorded iceland. Every ESC fan weeping or mad. Hmm... hmm... There’s a part of me that suspects that iceland would win just because of Dadi’s Internet coolness factor but they’re totally legit as is.

Serbia Nice, singing in their own language. It’s not just them but I’m not a fan of a lot of the black costumes this year. Pretty good for just the three of them and some wind machines. Lots of energy.

Georgia Feels like a mood song on an independent movie that plays during the movie. He sounds out of tune in parts, unfortunately. I mean, he’s probably not getting out of this semi but I actually like it.

Albania Singing in their own language! Weird to get solo singers in row with totally different songs.

Portugal Taking throwback very seriously. B&W and a 3:4 ratio. It could be the drugs I’m on but everything is working for me today so far. I’m really digging that light screen. Wow, that song went fast...which I was not expecting from Portugal.

Bulgaria This is very well put together. Is she singing the right words though? (I’ve only heard this song once before today.)

Finland Ahhhh, very welcome change of pace here with rock. Seems like the purpose of this song is just to be very loud and use a lot of pyro.

Latvia More pagan/witchy stuff! Totally not my jam though. I like that they’re not dressed in head-to-toe black. You know, this song feels like you took a bunch of the other songs, shoved them in a blender, and funkified it.

Switzerland I’d have staged that differently. As in “simpler.” Because the vocals do a lot of the work. It’s like throwing something on top of the vocals that you don’t need.

Denmark Back to the 80s. Eurovision of the 80s. I mean, wasn’t it the last time the Dutch won? Could play it off as a tribute to the last time the Dutch hosted or something. Their energies are different. Not sure if that’s on purpose. And then it feels very repetitive in the last 30.

Only really concerned about Iceland getting through. Won’t feel like I’ll suffer during the Grand Final if any of my least favorites make it through (but would probably consider them for a snack or bathroom break).

Maybe I’m just very happy to have the ESC back that I’m not as critical.

I’m not really an interpretative dance person. AND THERE IS THE DUTCH TRIBUTE TO BICYCLES! LOL

“Martin Osterdahl” is not as fun to say as “Jon Ola Sand.”

Albania (good on you singing in your own language), Serbia (same), Bulgaria, Moldova, Portugal!!!, Iceland (most obs!), San Marino, Switzerland, Greece (I always wonder about them when Cyprus isn’t in the same SF), Finland (which I expected).

I think the other SF might have been more interesting but this one was good too.

I will be shocked if Italy, Iceland and Ukraine don’t make the Top 5 on Saturday. I also will rage if somehow Sweden ends up with the most jury votes again.

Thank you so much for writing that Korest piece; it was really interesting and I am slowly eyeing it in order to perhaps expand upon it a little... anyways I was gonna ask if you could expand on the logistics of getting back the spell book/dictionary? You definitely don’t have to but I’m a little curious :) anyways besides that this is just an appreciation ask,,, thanks for feeding the microscopic korest fandom lol

AHHHH I’m unbelievably flattered! I’ve always been one to like rarepairs. Microscopic ships unite!

For the ones confused on what this is about, here’s a link to the Korest piece we are referring to.

To be honest here, I did not have the best of world building, and by the time I got to the point I got to that location in the story I didn’t really look too far into like… how it would work. I say, feel free to take your own creative stance on this.

That being said, totally not in a way that will like… leave me an excuse to just info dump… haha, I think it is good to lay some sort of foundation of my thought process so at least you aren’t totally lost within a magical system that I made myself. But I also don’t want to hinder any creative solutions that you come up with though, so feel free to change/disregard some of the information I wrote below. I go over my thoughts on the fire specifically. Afterwards, I made sections with Eduard and Yong Soo’s abilities and why I gave them the magical “powers” I did. Feel free to use the information and piece together a possible solution. As usual I wrote way too much, but the benefit of that is that you’ll have plenty to look through. Good Luck!

Logistics of Saving the Burning Book

So the remains of a burnt book is probably a ton of ashes, some flying away in the wind as solid clumps, some breaking off and turning into gaseous molecules, and some remaining on the ground. How does our duo get them back together?

I go into Eduard and Yong Soo’s skill sets a little further into this long post. I’d love to see what sort of ways you can piece together this puzzle (I mean, I myself haven’t even really solved it, so I’m intrigued. Maybe I’ll give it a go when I have time.)

Eduard 

Eduard’s inherent power is teleportation. I would like to think that the beginnings of his magical abilities began when he figured out he could transport objects to and from him. (Sort of like the chopstick scene in the portion I did write in my WIP). In my WIP, I had the object disappear and reappear again, but I am also open to having the object “float” in the air to/from him. He can also teleport himself (like his body, clothes, luggage) short distances. I never bothered to lay down a specific length for maximum distance and such, but he could definitely not go from Estonia → Korea. Maybe the distance is transporting from room to room in his house/apartment. Or maybe extend it further so when he’s really desperate he could teleport to work or something? Since I didn’t lay down hard boundaries, that distance he can transport himself to is up to you. I don’t have any instances of this happening in the fic itself, but I would think that Eduard can also transport other people as long as he was holding onto them. Teleporting, especially teleporting himself, takes a lot of magical energy to do, so he often has to chill and recharge. I think that it runs out rather often, but especially when he is not well rested and such. After all, his strength lies in his smarts, not in his power (in this AU, magical ability). I would like to think that he lives life largely like a “normal” person would. He doesn’t necessarily have as much control over his powers because he doesn’t practice them much.

TL;DR: Eduard can teleport short distances, transfer objects from one place to another (no touching non-living things necessary), and bring other people with him as long as they hold on to him.

I gave this ability to Eduard because in canon, hws Estonia is the one that gets to see the alternate universes of mochi-talia and nyotalia in person. It kinda fits in here because Eduard is once again beamed to somewhere that is very foreign to him! I also think that, if you want to add on, feel free to see Eduard improve on his ability while hanging around Yong Soo. After all, I think it is difficult to improve on magical abilities if every single “magical” person is spread out across the world. There’s one “sorcerer-type” per country after all. Meanwhile, Yong Soo had his brother to practice with for a bit, so I think that the increased exposure made him better at magic compared to Eduard.

Yong Soo

Yong Soo has many abilities as he has his spellbook. I brushed up a bit of this in Eduard’s section, but since he and his brother both are magical, I would think Yong Soo is a bit more powerful than Eduard. (I meant for Yong Soo’s brother to be hws North Korea, but I know that there have been other discussions of what sort of country representation(s) Korea split into. Feel free to switch up the siblings and such). Yong Soo’s inherent ability is a brief rewinding of time but it is solely isolated on one object. Physical changes, like fixing broken glasses, for example, would be a demonstration of what Yong Soo would do. Chemical changes, like paper burning, would be harder but still achievable because Yong Soo is pretty experienced. The boundaries to his inherent ability would be that he can’t do anything to a living being: someone got stabbed/broke an arm/drank poison/died? He can’t reverse the wound. However, if a once-living being was affected, Yong Soo can manipulate it. (This could lead to some really creepy story lines. But I leave this open because he manipulates paper, something that came from a tree once) Honestly, you could go into a deep, deep rabbit hole seeing what sort of manifestations of a time-manipulating ability. I decided not to go down that rabbit hole and instead have Yong Soo spend his time researching into other spells: light/fire manipulation (the lamp scene), language translating (“why are you a polyglot?” scene), magic boost (I assume this is how Eduard made it back home, but I kept that vague. I leave that up to you to decide).

TL;DR: Yong Soo can rewind time but only for an object. The object cannot be living. Physical changes are easier to backtrack compared to chemical ones.

My thought process behind giving Yong Soo this ability was that he could be an inventor of some sort. I still had him do this a tad when he was working for the Emperor and such. Like, he would do his normal advisor job and return to his little nook where he would create new inventions. The reason why this would work was because he could just totally screw up on his experiments and all he would have to do was rewind a bit. Hence the whole “____ originated in Korea” would make sense. It’s a bit of a stretch, but it made sense in my head.

ALSO ALSO keep in mind that I give you the power of absolutely whatever you want regarding what Yong Soo can do regarding the spell book. Make him struggle though because he just got the spell book and they slowly translate the text. Maybe his skills are half-baked, or maybe there’s a spell that he uses earlier on regarding flames (Maybe the lantern scene?) that is not so strong but he works on it and at this moment it works! Idk just some thoughts.

Conclusion:

If you do end up expanding on this premise, feel free to cut out the accidental burning of the book. Your story structure might end up a bit different from mine. How vital is this section to the overall story? If it doesn’t fit, don’t force it.

Eurovision 2011 my top 43

Hello, and welcome to another episode of this ESC series, as I go back to May 10, 12 and 14, 2011, when the 56th edition of the contest was held in Düsseldorf, Germany, after Lena’s victory in Oslo last year. 43 countries took part, equaling the record of Belgrade 2008, and this year, Austria, Hungary, San Marino and Italy returned to the contest, the latter after 14 years of absence, and became part of the Big Five and an automatic qualifier. The stage that year was so huge and it’s also one of my favorites ever. The winner was Azerbaijan with Ell & Nikki and the song Running Scared, making this their first and to date only victory in the contest. And now, let’s review the songs!

1st Place: SWEDEN/Eric Saade-Popular (Real Placing: 3rd-185 points) 

I know the lyrics of this song are so cheesy, but THIS IS AN AWESOME SONG, I love the performance, also Eric is one of my favorite Swedish singers and here his voice is so good, also he’s so cute. The music is so perfect and it’s a very catchy and engaging song, and it would’ve been a stunning winner. 

2nd Place: IRELAND/Jedward-Lipstick (Real Placing: 8th-119 points) 

Oh the epicness, this is one of my favorite songs from that year, catchy, memorable, they sing nice, the performance is so perfect, everything here works so well, and the music is so good, it’s one of those song once it enters your head, there’s no way you can forget it. 

3rd Place: GERMANY/Lena-Taken by a stranger (Real Placing: 10th-106 points)

Our defending champion, this song I must say it’s a bit better than Satellite, it’s darker, more mysterious, and more mature, her voice is better here, the only thing I don’t understand is the performance, she looks so stunning and beautiful, but the dancers... still, this song is one of my favorite German entries from the 10′s and I think this deserved a better place. 

4th Place: SPAIN/Lucía Pérez-Que me quiten lo bailao (Real Placing: 23rd-50 points) 

Awwwwwwww this is so beautiful, the music is so happy, her voice is so good, the staging is okay and the lyrics are so perfect, this is one of the songs I play when I’m feeling down and lifts my spirit. I don’t know how this finished so low on the scoreboard because this is a very happy song. Sincerely this deserved so much love that night. 

5th Place: UNITED KINGDOM/Blue-I can (Real Placing: 11th-100 points)

Another song that is so good, the music is so amazing, they are so great on the stage, the lyrics are so nice and everything here works perfectly, also this finished so high in the televote, surprisingly for the UK recent history. I think this deserved to be in the top 10 but indeed this was a strong year. 

6th Place: HUNGARY/Kati Wolf-What about my dreams? (Real Placing: 22nd-53 points) 

Again, how this song finished so low, it’s a perfect retro pop song for me, catchy, memorable, her voice is so good, her outfit was a bit weird but she’s stunning, the lyrics are so cool and her is perfect on stage, the music is what my pop heart needs to feel better and it’s a very inspiring song for me. 

7th Place: SLOVENIA/Maja Keuc-No one (Real Placing: 13th-96 points) 

Another perfect song, her voice is so powerful and strong, also the melody is catchy and makes me feel so good when I listen to this one. She’s so beautiful and the lyrics are good, I simply enjoy this song so much. 

8th Place: SWITZERLAND/Anna Rossinelli-In love for a while (Real Placing: 25th-19 points/last) 

Awwww so cute <3, this song is simple, catchy and I always hum this one when I listen to it, the staging is so perfect for this song, the music is so pleasant and wow, this song makes me feel in love actually, she’s so lovely on stage. Sadly, this came last, and I don’t know why because it’s a likely song.  

9th Place: BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA/Dino Merlin-Love in rewind (Real Placing: 6th-125 points) 

OOOOOOO, this is such a perfect and pleasant song, the music is so cute, the lyrics are brilliant, his voice is so good, the performance is lovely and IMO it’s one of the best Bosnian songs ever, it’s so cheerful, happy, and I always smile to this song. SITO. 

10th Place: SERBIA/Nina-Čaroban (Real Placing: 14th-85 points)

OH THIS IS A CUTE SONG, I love the retro feeling in it and her voice is nice, it’s a very refreshing song and I’m in love with the background, so colorful and hypnotic, also this always makes me smile and it’s a very enjoyable song, I love her dress and the whole performance. 

11th Place: DENMARK/A Friend in London-New tomorrow (Real Placing: 5th-134 points) 

Another lovely song, his voice is so good, the music is cute and the lyrics are so beautiful, still it reminds me of a song from Andreas Johnson, but I always sing to this song and the performance with that giant ball is very cool and perfect, also Tim is so handsome. 

12th Place: CROATIA/Daria-Celebrate (Real Placing: 15th SF1-41 points)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but this is so catchy and entertaining, I loved it since the first time I heard it and the performance is so perfect, I love the dress changing because it’s so weird. Her voice was a bit bad but this is so memorable and yeah, lovely. SALAD BREAAAAAAK. 

13th Place: FINLAND/Paradise Oskar-Da da dam (Real Placing: 21st-57 points)

Awwww a very lovely and stunning song, his voice is so sweet, the music is calm, the performance is lovely because of the projection, also the lyrics are so good, I think it was a bit forgotten because it was the first song of the night. Still, this song is very cute. 

14th Place: GEORGIA/Eldrine-One more day (Real Placing: 9th-110 points)

PROGRESSIVE ROCK OMG, this is a very good song, her voice is so good, the staging is perfect, except for those dresses, the music is breathtaking and surprisingly I enjoy the rap part because it reminds me of Linkin Park. A very good rock song. 

15th Place: GREECE/Loukas Giorkas feat. Stereo Mike-Watch my dance (Real Placing: 7th-120 points)

Hi Loukas... this song is very ethnic, the music is so good, maybe the rapping was too much and kinda ruined the song, but when Loukas starts singing everything rises and delivers all the strength for this song. Also when he sings fotia I love the fact fire rises. 

16th Place: AUSTRIA/Nadine Beiler-The secret is love (Real Placing: 18th-64 points)

This is one of the songs I always like to sing in the shower, the music is so charming and her voice is so stunning, I love also the staging because it’s so intimate and the backing singers lift this so much. 

17th Place: SLOVAKIA/TWiiNS-I’m still alive (Real Placing: 13th SF2-48 points)

I must say that this song is much of my taste and reminds me of another song, and I find it good, the music is cute, they sing so good, sadly the backing singers were louder than them and it was a shame, also the performance is simple but sweet. 

18th Place: FRANCE/Amaury Vassili-Sognu (Real Placing: 15th-82 points)

Oh this is another epic song, his voice is stunning, the staging is amazing, and it reminds me of a song from Lès Miserables, and the whole atmosphere here is perfect, sadly, it was a bit forgotten, also I have a soft spot for Corsican and opera. 

19th Place: ITALY/Raphael Gualazzi-Madness of love (Real Placing: 2nd-189 points)

A long time ago I hated this because I thought it was boring and I had it lower on my top, but now I find the music brilliant, his performance is so jazzy and it’s a very relaxing song, also what a comeback for Italy, and if this won that night I would’ve lived with it, it’s a nice song. 

20th Place: ISRAEL/Dana International-Ding dong (Real Placing: 15th SF2-38 points) 

Poor Dana International, a former winner stuck in the semifinals, the song is good, her voice is as good as in 1998, it’s catchy, memorable, and I can’t understand how this song failed to qualify, the performance is very good and she looked like a true queen on stage.  

21st Place: BELARUS/Anastasia Vinnikova-I love Belarus (Real Placing: 14th SF2-45 points) 

I love this song, at first I didn’t pay attention to this but now I find it amazing, the music is so nice, her voice is a bit flat but this has a nice touch, the lyrics make me wanna go to Belarus and find it out by myself, the instruments in the music makes this so pleasant. 

22nd Place: BULGARIA/Poli Genova-Na inat (Real Placing: 12th SF2-48 points)

AHHHH POLI <3 this song is very good, the music is so great, her voice is stunning as ever and the performance is nice and enjoyable, this entyr makes me feel so powerful and free, it’s a very strong rock song. 

23rd Place: AZERBAIJAN/Ell & Nikki-Running scared (Real Placing: 1st-221 points) 

The winning song of the night, and it’s my least favorite winner of all time, certainly it’s catchy, the music is lovely and they sing well together, but a winning song? No. Top 5? Maybe, in a year with a strong field of songs, this came as a surprise and even if I enjoy it, I hate the fact that they won with this song and not with other better entries. 

24th Place: LATVIA/Musiqq-Angel in disguise (Real Placing: 17th SF2-25 points) 

Again another good song, the music is so pleasant and the vocals were nice, the performance is a bit of a letdown but I like it, also the lyrics are a bit funny at some point but I like the song overall, it gives me a calm vibe and it’s lovely. 

25th Place: ESTONIA/Getter Jaani-Rockefeller street (Real Placing: 24th-44 points)

One of the biggest flops of the year and I can see why, if you asked me 2-3 years ago, this was one of my favorite songs from 2011, but then more songs came in and I think my tastes changed, now I find it a bit annoying and her voice wasn’t on point that night, but the performance is so good and perfect. 

26th Place: NORWAY/Stella Mwangi-Haba haba (Real Placing: 17th SF1-30 points)

Awww what a happy song! The music here is so playful, her voice isn’t the best here sadly but still it’s a very cheerful song, the lyrics are also cute and it’s catchy, this renews my energy and makes me feel so good. 

27th Place: POLAND/Magdalena Tul-Jestem (Real Placing: 19th SF1-18 points/last) 

This song is very catchy, her voice was a bit all over the place but still this song is so good, the music is so perfect and the performance is very good, I remember the dancing, and the chorus is nice, and this is in Polish which works for me so well. 

28th Place: UKRAINE/Mika Newton-Angel (Real Placing: 4th-159 points)

This song is quite bland and it isn’t my cup of tea, but her voice and the performance are stunning and perfect, which lift this song so much, though I would’ve preferred to see Jamala’s Smile in the stage that year.  

29th Place: ICELAND/Sjonni’s Friends-Coming home (Real Placing: 20th-61 points) 

This entry always makes me cry because of the meaning of the lyrics, also the music is so lovely and they have a lot of charisma together, and the fact that this was dedicated to the original singer that died that year, makes this better for me. 

30th Place: SAN MARINO/Senit-Stand by (Real Placing: 16th SF1-34 points)

A very lovely ballad, her voice is so smooth and the feeling here is so calm, the music is relaxing and it’s so cool, IMO this is one of San Marino’s best entries and deserved more than other songs that finished higher than this one. 

31st Place: ALBANIA/Aurela Gaçe-Feel the passion (Real Placing: 14th SF1-47 points)

HER VOICE IS STUNNING, the music is so powerful and the performance is full of passion and fire, the chorus is so amazing and it’s very good, it’s a very nice song and it’s so pleasant, love her red hair too. 

32nd Place: ARMENIA/Emmy-Boom boom (Real Placing: 12th SF1-54 points)

Another guilty pleasure of mine, I love the music, maybe her voice was bad and the performance a bit too much, and that resulted on Armenia’s first non qualification, BOOM BOM CHAKA CHAKA, this is catchy but a bit bad, still, I enjoy it. 

33rd Place: RUSSIA/Alexey Vorobyov-Get you (Real Placing: 16th-77 points)

One of the many pop songs that year, and by the team of Poker Face by Lady Gaga, this song is enjoyable, his voice could’ve been better and the performance is nice, I like it, also he’s handsome.   

34th Place: LITHUANIA/Evelina Sašenko-C’est ma vie (Real Placing: 19th-63 points) 

Awww Evelina, this is a very lovely song, her voice is so strong, the music is like out of a movie or a musical, also the performance is simple and cute. If this was entered in other year, it would’ve done better. 

35th Place: CYPRUS/Christos Mylordos-San Aggelos S’agapisa (Real Placing: 18th SF2-16 points) 

The music here is so beautiful and the performance is so good, also he sings nice and it’s a bit memorable, but as with their song in 2000, I think this needed more to deliver it’s greatness. 

36th Place: ROMANIA/Hotel FM-Change (Real Placing: 17th-77 points)

This is a cute song, the music is catchy and he sings so well, but still it’s a bit flat and a bit boring after a while, the lyrics are so beautiful but I think this song needed something else to really impress me. 

37th Place: FYR MACEDONIA/Vlatko Ilievski-Rusinka (Real Placing: 16th SF2-36 points) 

Ah this song is so nice, the music is so charming, and also I love one of the backing singers, Vlatko’s voice here sounds so good and the background is so nice, and the bridge is my favorite part. But still, I like another 36 songs more than this one. 

38th Place: MOLDOVA/Zdob si Zdub-So lucky (Real Placing: 12th-97 points)

Wow, such a... weird song, sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it, but it’s memorable because of that performance, this is a bit mediocre compared to their 2005 entry, which I enjoy more than this one. Also, I want a cone like those. 

39th Place: THE NETHERLANDS/3JS-Never alone (Real Placing: 19th SF2-13 points/last) 

A pleasant song, but also it’s a bit forgettable, the voice of the lead singer is a bit bad and the music is a bit boring as well, not one of The Netherlands best recent songs. 

40th Place: TURKEY/Yüksek Sadakat-Live it up (Real Placing: 13th SF1-47 points) 

I like the music on this one so much, but I still think it’s a bit mediocre because of the main vocalist voice, it’s a bit flat, also it’s Turkey’s only non qualification, and I see why it happened. 

41st Place: BELGIUM/Witloof Bay-With love baby (Real Placing: 11th SF2-53 points)

I admire the talent of the people that can sing a capella, but, as with the Latvian entry in 2006, it’s one of the genres I can’t listen at full, they sing nice, sadly, not my cup of tea. 

42nd Place: PORTUGAL/Homens Da Luta-A luta é alegria (Real Placing: 18th SF1-22 points) 

This is such an interesting and weird song, the lyrics are brilliant, and the music is enjoyable, but I can’t place it higher because of the performance and my overall impression of this song, a nice message with this one.

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?

Gosh it’s been so long. I think I started working on this fic in 2013-2014 so the details have gone very hazy. I remember RPing with a fantastic Iceland in our ring at that time and as much as our characters’ relationship was platonic, it was those RPs that got me really interested in shipping them. There wasn’t much content to be found so I guess I decided to take up the task of filling the void lol.

The ending I have planned is what really got me to finally to start getting things down and the story started forming around that. The 1920s setting formed as a part of that. c:

2. What scene did you first put down?

I think it was actually a small part of the ending that is not published at the moment. It’s probably going to be scrapped though because the writing on it is absolutely atrocious on it haha.

5. What part was hardest to write?

Not so much a “part” per say, but Iceland has been a bit tricky to write out. Estonia comes naturally for me because I’ve been writing him for so long but Iceland I don’t have as much experience with and I sometimes feel like he’s a bit OOC.

13. What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

PLEASE I’ve got a whole playlist for this damn fic. We’ll be here for a while if I post the whole thing!

Couldn’t tell you. This fic was brought into existence out of no where as I desperately wanted to do a birthday fic but didn’t have any ideas.

When it comes to Liet ships, EstLiet owns my heart and it was clear that’s what it was going to turn into the more I wrote down.

11. What do you like best about this fic?

I like the vibe of the fic. It’s not heavy at all and just a fun, feel-good type of fic. I love writing stories like that!

ESC 2018- My thoughts to the performances

Ukraine: Singing vampire? Omg he’s playing piano. Burning stairs. God that’s a lot of fire. Calm down Brendon Urie. Good song though. Has a nice beat. 

Spain: Awwwwww. They’re so cuuuutttee. Their voices harmonize really good together. I’ve got chills. Are they gonna kiss?? (From Commentator: “The perfect love song for High School Musical 4″)

Slovenia: A song i could see playing in a club. “Are you ready to sing with me?” *cue faces of I don’t speak your language tho* All in all, nice party song. 

Lithuania: Oh that’s smart putting soft moments/memories on screen next to the singer. And there’s her husband holding her hand. A soft love ballad, very nice. She sounded like she was tearing up, lot’s of emotion in her voice. 

Austria: What a deep voice omg!! Kinda gospel-esque. Odd choice of wardrobe. DAMN THAT FALSETTO!! A song to clap to. (From Commentator: “The most beautiful tooth gap of the night”)

Estonia: You can tell she sings opera. Oh wow, how is that dress even real??? No wonder it’s the most expensive of the night. A beautiful soprano. (From Commentator: “That last note probably broke a lot of glass”) Stop being so mean narrator, it was beautiful. 

Norway: Can’t type, gotta snap. Great animations, great job producers. Oh god he’s scatting.... is that really how you write a song?? Oh, a casual violin solo, cool cool. This boy is all smiles. I wish him all the best.

Portugal: Another ballad. They’re kinda half jamming out to their song and it’s kinda hilarious. There was like half a beat... and the second person barely sung... not digging the song tbh...

United Kingdom: Already a good beat. “I still believe in chasing rainbows”...same. Someone just tried to steal her mike... like i’m pretty sure he tried to pull a Kanye. How rude... But she still rocked the stage. At least she gets to perform again at the end.

Serbia: Is that Albert Einstein playing the recorder?? Started off ballad-y and now they’re dropping beats.. nice. Honestly they look like they just came from Roman Empire times and i’m here for it. 

Germany: Oh it’s THAT song!!... did not know we voted that into the ESC... Ngl, when i first heard this song on the radio, I thought he sounded like Zayn. Really love the pre-chorus. Boy’s got some vocals. I’ve got chills. Boy deserves all the applause. 

Albania: Ooh acoustic guitar. And now it‘s gone. Going full rock now. That singer’s got some lungs. WHAT A FALSETTO!! I really wish I knew what he was singing about.

France: Smoke. Lot’s of it. Song got me rocking back and forth. Merci indeed, France. Those shoes don’t really go with that outfit though... you can’t be straight edge black and then put on pink trainers.. Oh now we’re just throwing our fists in the air and singing Merci, Merci. Alrighty then. 

Czech Republic: OHMYGOD YOU LOOK LIKE OLLY MURS IN HEART SKIPS A BEAT!! OH AND YOU’VE GOT A BACKPACK TOO!! AND NOW YOU’RE RAPPING???!!!! thank you for shaking thAT BOOTY. I LOVE THE BEAT!! I LOVE THE SONG!! I LOVE YOU!!

Denmark: VIKINGS. JUST VIKINGS. YEP. this sounds like a war song vikings would sing... Somehow those eyes are very piercing. Now there’s snow and fog. It really is as if we were on a viking ship sailing to battle. 

Australia: Omg the vocals. Sing it girl!!! The crowd does not want to sing with you but i will!! AND A BREAK DANCE!! This song is making me dance. WE SURE DO GOT LOVE!!! (From Commentator: “She’s wrapped up like a present in that dress” she sure is buddy)

Finland: I was not expecting high notes from her. And now she’s spinning. God that would make me dizzy.. Those back up dancers are amazing wow. Another club song. Digging the beats. She really knows how to control the crowd. FIREWORKS!! AND STAGE DIVE!! 

Bulgaria: This has a lot of soul. They’re really jamming out. Really great beat. Amazing vocals. The 5 of them harmonize really well. The song is cool. Didn’t understand the concept but that’s not what this contest is about. 

Moldova: JESUS CALM DOWN!! JAZZY AND LOTS OF ILLUSIONS. Are you singers or magicians??? Such naughty hands... OH AND ANOTHER DANCE BREAK. AND SCATTING. Nice. Listen, the song was catchy and made me tap my feet. Good job. 

Sweden: Wait is this a dude?? Yep.. That is a high voice. He looks like Kendall from Big Time Rush but dances like Michael Jackson. The song’s giving me both MJ and Timberlake vibes... not a bad thing tho. The crowd loves him and so do I.

Hungary: Oh god metal.... Dude’s got a good voice tho wow!! Sing it bro!! Again, lot’s of fire. Lot’s of head banging. NO SHOES!! WHERE ARE YOUR SHOES BRO??!! Dude sounds vicious but they seem like cool guys. Normally not a fan of metal but the song is not bad. 

Israel: Weeaboo?? Sound board magic. Is she bawking like a chicken??? Are any of those words that she’s singing?? Yes i do believe she is bawking. She’s got good vocals tho. I think this is a song i would make fun of with friends but secretly jam out to in private... Definitely a guilty pleasure song. 

The Netherlands: Ahhhh rock. Sounds like a country singer tho... Country rock?? The band knows some moves. AND THE FLIPS ARE THERE!! Leopard country boy/Bon Jovi imitation is pretty a-okay... don’t get the break dancing bandmates tho.

Ireland: (welcome back :)) Oh gosh a lonely lamppost and bench. He’s on guitar, she’s on piano ... already love them. OH AND THE DANCERS!!! THEY’RE BEAUTIFUL. PETALS FALLING!! SUCH CHEMISTRY!! LOVELY DANCE MOVES, SO FLUID!! A BEAUTIFUL SONG!! i can’t think of anything else but his voice and their dance moves..

Cyprus: WHOA!! CALM DOWN SHAKIRA!! THAT IS SOME BODYSUIT!! THOSE ARE SOME STRUTS!! AND A QUICK DANCE BREAK! This song is FIRE!! Literally... lot’s of fire. 

Italy: I do love a song with a good message. A great comment on current events and humanity. It’s a very simple performance but that doesn’t make the song less powerful. Lot’s of heart and soul was put into that song. So many chills. LOVE IT!!

ohhh since I live in Europe I have visited many countries! Luxembourg, Lithuania, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Sweden, The Netherlands, Latvia, Estonia and USA (just NYC and DC though)
