B:Ā Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?
T. Any fandom tropes you canā€™t stand?
[from this Fanfic Ask Game]
Thank you for the asks! šŸ’™
B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?
I wouldnā€™t say that any of my fics are inspired by my personal experience per se (tbh my life has been pretty boring anyway šŸ˜)ā€¦ but given that I really envision myself in the readerā€™s position when Iā€™m writing fanfics, I do write myself into the reader character in lots of ways (while of course trying to avoid specific characteristics). She is a better and more badass version of me basically.
Tumblr media
If I had to pick, here are a couple examples of somewhat personally-inspired fics ā€“
In Jax Teller: Pro Boner, reader like me is a lawyer šŸ‘©šŸ»ā€šŸ’¼āš–ļø
In Youā€™re Wet, Youā€™re Naked, reader is a smutty fanfic writer āœšŸ¼šŸ”ž though obvs I canā€™t relate at all to the fact that Charlie likes her šŸ˜‚
T: Any fandom tropes you canā€™t stand?
I honestly canā€™t think of anyā€¦? Admittedly Iā€™ve been a lot more focused on writing fics rather than reading lately... Iā€™m sure there are some tropes that Iā€™d find less appealing than others, but for the life of me I canā€™t recall a single trope that Iā€™ve disliked from all my time on tumblr šŸ„“
Tumblr media
Thanks again, and hopefully that satisfactorily answers your questions! šŸ™ƒ

Definitive grading of vampire tv shows according to me (an expert)
Disclaimer I honestly havenā€™t finished a bunch of these but I gave them a good college try.
Also there are spoilers
Tumblr media
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 8/10:
It is the 90s and you will not forget it. If I see one more cardigan worn as a shirt with just one or two buttons done up I will scream. Good ensemble cast, struggles a bit with plot sometimes, but come on we all know Buffy is iconic. Feels very teen, the whole set in high school things gets old really fast, but I get that itā€™s a convenient way to have all these people grouped together by default. If you are looking for a satisfying relationship or women actually being treated fairly you have come to the wrong place, yes it makes me sad too. Also good lord Dawn got on my nerves and decreased my enjoyment of the last couple season. Overall some feisty good humor and fighting. Buffy really did the high school vampire genre first, and it gave me quite a few chuckles so that earns it some points.
Tumblr media
Angel 7/10:
This one is a bit tough... I love my boy Angel, but he really is quite angsty. But his understated humor and awkwardness make up for it. Spike coming in at the end was a real bonus. I always thought Cordelia was a bitch so I wasnā€™t thrilled with her being a regular, but then I got even more mad at how she got treated on the show and was written off. It lacks some of the ensemble charm that Buffy had, and I know itā€™s trying to be more edgy and appeal to boys but I think the relationships and every day stuff was what made Buffy interesting.
Tumblr media
The Vampire Diaries 7/10:
Look was the dialogue and plot always outstanding? Absolutely not. Did it piss me off when I was like 13 that they deviated from the books? Absolutely. But all in all a real fun time. Very over dramatic, a bit like Riverdale but somehow less contrived despite being about literal vampires. Has a nice mix of different personalities and character tropes, lots of witty one liners, attractive cast, Iā€™d say itā€™s pretty solid. Got a bit weak towards the end when some cast members left but what can ya do.Ā Ā
Tumblr media
True Blood 1/10:
I hated it. The fact that it takes place in the south with gross confederate flag touting people already made this show pretty unappealing. Combined with the main character having a really dumb name (Sookie??? excuse me???) and the main vampire not even being a hottie (and also quite un-charismatic imo) it was a miss for me. The plot was mediocre, and while I appreciate Sookieā€™s can do attitude she routinely fell short of expectations. Also some interesting POC characters, but it made me a bit uncomfy that they were the only ones being shown with fucked up home lives and emotional issues.
Tumblr media
Kindred the Embraced 8/10:
Gone but not forgotten RIP, this baby only lasted 8 episodes due to the lead dying in a motorcycle accident but man I really liked it so it gets one point per episode that aired. It has admittedly been a long time since Iā€™ve watched it, but the concept of vampire society being pretty organized and categorized into different gangs was interesting. Some really great characters with pretty decent nuance, especially for a vamp show that didnā€™t even last half a season.Ā
Tumblr media
Moonlight 4/10:
I mean a vampire private detective seems pretty swell, but the main guy was so bland and boring that he managed to suck the joy out of it. Points have been awarded for a great performance by Jason Dohring as a pretty charming and fun recurring character. I know there was a girl bc thereā€™s always a girl but tbh donā€™t remember her, she was probably fine.
Tumblr media
Being Human (US version) 6/10:
It had potential, and some of my disappointment is just that I was hoping for some cute slice of life stuff but there was just so much DRAMA. If you pitch me a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost become roommates I will be expecting a kinda funny sit com vibe but absolutely not. Had some good moments for sure but I just wanted it to be less serious.Ā
Tumblr media
Blood Ties 5/10:
The first one with a historical figure as a lead! Kyle Shmid plays a very attractive Henry Fitzroy (fun fact he also played a vamp named Henry on Being Human). Kind of a reversal from Moonlight, in this one Vicki (a human) is a detective and Henry helps her out with extra stuff. Would have higher marks, but for the entire two season they drew out the whole will they/wonā€™t they with the two of them and it got old real fast. Also there was a plot point about Vicki being in the process of losing her vision but I donā€™t think it ever actually played into the plot?? Anyway Henry is very hot and mysterious, so Iā€™ll take it.
Tumblr media
What we do in the Shadows 9/10:
Very close to perfection but marred by the fact that the movie really was perfect and nothing can ever replicate that. I like the re-imagining, I like the cameos, Iā€™m a sucker for things that are usually dramatic and serious being made comedic. What can I say, go watch What we do in the Shadows.
Honorable mentions for shows that have vampires but are not about them:Ā
Tumblr media
Preacher 10/10:
I love Preacher. A lot. I was a bit devastated when it ended, but it had a fair run. The plots were absolutely wild, the characters were so great, just absolutely pristine. As for our vampire fellow, Cass is vulgar, funny, violent, but with a heart of gold (well, maybe gold plated at least). It did kind of get me down towards the end when he and Jesse were being mean to each other, because the team of the two of them with Tulip was so good. The really drawn out foreskin in face creams joke?? iconic.Ā
Tumblr media
Shadowhunters 7.5/10:
This really is the Riverdale of fantasy shows. Terrible plot and dialogue, weak acting, kinda iffy cgi sometimes. But the drama really is iconic, and itā€™s a great show to genuinely enjoy laughing at. Pretty good representation of LGBT and different ethnicity characters. Itā€™s not every mediocre fantasy show that has pretty respectful examples of gay, lesbian, bi, and ace characters. If youā€™re looking for heartwarming romance THIS is the one, lots of genuine love and affection not just straight couples arguing and being mean to each other. The vampires in it are pretty cool, one main and couple of side characters, overall would recommend, the rating is a feature of my enjoyment of it not actual quality.Ā Ā
Tumblr media
Midnight, Texas 5/10:
Man this one really tried, I think it had some real spicy ambitions but sadly didnā€™t quite meet them... I loved the range of supernatural characters and the kind of open secret nature of their existence. The vamp character was very unique, and a some nice variety from the norm as he was a POC. Also Manfred was a real champ and did his best to deal with all the wild crap that was going on.
Tumblr media
NOS4A2 3/10:
I love Zachary Quinto but Charlie Manx is an incel and that is unforgivable. Heā€™s also not really a vampire but he keeps getting refered to as one?? Heā€™s pretty similar to an energy vampire though, so close enough. I feel like the whole christmas gimmick thing is really weird and makes situations seem ridiculous when they are supposed to be serious. Vic is nice as a female lead, but then she has a kid and suddenly I do not care. Obviously this is a personal preference of mine, and I know that it follows the graphic novel, but motherhood and having a child around diminishes the experience for me. Yes I know a main part of the plot is Charlie kindapping children, that doesnā€™t mean I need them to be main characters. I like Maggie a lot though. Overall, it kind of feels like thereā€™s not really much plot there, itā€™s just Charlie taking children and Vic trying to stop him over and over again.
Tumblr media
Penny Dreadful 6/10:
There were a lot of aspects of Penny Dreadful that I liked quite a lot, and as a whole I would recommend it. Unfortunately the rushed and disappointing conclusion has kind of soured its memory for me :/ The vampire aspect of the show was ok, the kinda low level vampires were nice and weird but that whole Dracula arc was very badly done and felt unnecessary/not enough in some ways. So like Iā€™d give it an 8/10 until you get to the end of the last season.
If a show you like did not appear on this list (Iā€™m looking at you Legacies...) it is because I did not watch it and I do not care

I think you should do ALL THE ASKS :D
WELL ALL RIGHT THENA - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They donā€™t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.1) DCAU TimSteph2) ItsuHaru3) Logan x Diana Prince4) Itsuki Koizumi x Kyouya OotoriB - A pairingā€“platonic, romantic or sexualā€“that you initially didnā€™t consider, but someone changed your mind.*looks at WonderWolf and SuperBats*C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.BatCat.Ā  Even back when I wasnā€™t a fan of Batman I remember I read one DCAU comic involving Catwoman, and her character just didnā€™t appeal to me.D - A pairing you wish you liked but just canā€™t.Any Kagepro ships tbh.Ā  Idk Iā€™m just not really invested in the romance of the series.Ā  I prefer them all as friends/platonic.E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?Ahahaā€¦Ā  Iā€™ve contributed a fair bit of Kagecrack through vids/posts, though I think my favorite are these BTASĀ crossover edits. Also Kyorange and Skitzo!Kyon for TMoHS.Ā  (Plus the ā€œgenderbent cast is the previous generationā€ theory if that counts?)F - Whatā€™s the longest youā€™ve ever been in a fandom?Well Iā€™ve been a PokĆ©mon fan since elementary school.Ā  While I no longer watch the show/play the games, I still follow the new generations and RP on occasion.G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?Eeyup.Ā  While I donā€™t ship too often, when I do I ship HARD.Ā  ItsuHaru was my first real ā€œobsessiveā€ OTP, but I think the honor for the *very* first ship I had goes toā€¦ Cody x Ken from Digimon S2, in a sense. *shot* ^^; Idk I was just really focused on the idea of them making up and becomingĀ ā€œfriendsā€. XP Though I also shipped Ken with Kari too bc of the Dark Ocean stuff.Ā  (Also Gary Oak x Molly Hale from PokĆ©mon but thatā€™s a whole other story. >.>; )H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?Iā€™m still mostly a weeb so animu is my go-to, but Iā€™ve been branching out to more Western stuff lately.Ā  (Although when it comes to Kagepro the songs are still the best medium. =3=)I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?Steven Universe.Ā  While I still love the show, hearing about all the toxicity in the fandom really turned me off so I just try to avoid it.J - Name a fandom you didnā€™t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You donā€™t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)Again, Steven Universe.Ā  Also Over the Garden Wall and Bojack Horseman (the former of which I still really recommend you see).K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?Iā€™m also gonna say Sunset Shimmer from Equestria Girls. Ā She went from being a seemingly one-off villain to a fully redeemed good guy and leader in her own right. Ā Though she still has her insecurities, it lets her relate to and help others in the same situation to not let those feelings of inadequacy or jealousy overcome them. Also Midna from Twilight Princess. Ā Her change of heart from servicing her own needs to selfless sacrifice after observing how hard Link tried to save others mirrors my own feelings when I met Link in OoT/MM and watched him grow into a true hero, working to help both the people of Hyrule and Termina even when he had no obligation or was openly blamed for Ganonā€™s rise to power.L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isnā€™t one of your faves. (Characters youā€™re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)So Iā€™m not a big fan of Dick Grayson in the DCAU (or any of his animated adaptations aside from Lego Batman; his YJ version being especially egregious) since I see him as rather childish and bad at dealing with conflict, but heā€™s admittedly a lot better in the tie-in comics, which give him some much needed development as Nightwing (whereas he barely got any screentime in TNBA).Ā  There he acts as a genuine big brother to Tim, and is shown to not be as nearly as bitter at Bruce as the Old Wounds ep would have one believe.Ā  I also like that they highlight Dickā€™s fondness for music, wherein his musical knowledge actually comes in handy to solve a couple cases.M - Name a character that youā€™d like to have for a friend. All of the Mekakushi Dan, SOS Brigade, or Host Club tbhN - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).1) More Kagepro content in general2) More DCAU TimStephĀ 3) More ItsuHaru
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?Growing Up - Run River NorthDefinitely a Timmy Todd/TimSteph song now that I think about it.Ā  Especially the lines ā€œI found my way without your help, with a broken familyā€ and ā€œmonsters in my headā€. ;(P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).ā€¦Tbh Iā€™m really liking theĀ ā€œLegion x Ouranā€ idea lately. XD *shot*Q - A fandom youā€™ve abandoned and why.Hmā€¦Ā  I donā€™t think there are any Iā€™ve reallyĀ ā€œabandonedā€, per se.Ā  Most of them are still there, just not at the forefront anymore.R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom? All the relationships in Kagepro *shot*S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)Molly Hale from the third movie is the god of the PokĆ©mon world.Ā  Justā€¦ donā€™t ask lol.T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?Already answered, but Iā€™ll add a few of my favorites for DCAU TimSteph:1)Ā Tim cuts his own hair after RotJ (or rather just lets it grow long) since he doesnā€™t trust anyone else with sharp objects around him. Ā Steph is the first person he allows to trim his hair for him (even though she has no experience with it either), since I imagine him feeling comfortable enough around her that he even falls asleep like Sousuke does with Chidori in Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. Ā (For context, he was raised as a soldier from an early age and this is what happened when they tried to take him to a salon. Ā Played for laughs, but probably an accurate portrayal of people suffering from anxiety/PTSD having to deal with mundane tasks that trigger them.)
2) Similarly, Steph plays piano to help calm Tim down whenever heā€™s having a panic attack.3) After RotJ Tim refuses to wear red for a long time until Steph knits him a red scarf and tells him it ā€œsuits himā€ bc red is the color of heroes.
As an aside, I also recently like the idea that Logan was at Lexā€™s party in the DCEU and saw Bruce and Diana together, based on this playlist that I made.Ā Ā U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why theyā€™re your favorites.Gonna talk about a few I donā€™t mention too often nowadays.
1) Link from The Legend of ZeldaLink will forever be my greatest trueĀ love.Ā  Heā€™s the first real ā€œheroā€ I believed in, and he honestly changed my life at one point to actually want to be a better person.Ā  While that faith has faded and I donā€™t think I can ever reach his example, I still wish I had that kind of courage and kindness - or at least be able to inspire others in the same way he did me.2) Meroko Yui from Full Moon wo SagashiteIf Link was the first (and only) person I ever truly fell in love with, Meroko was the one who taught me what ā€œtrue loveā€ was in the first place.Ā  I wonā€™t say too much since I still sincerely hope you will check out the series someday, but suffice to say thereā€™s a scene towards the end where she makes a choice that shows how much she has personally grown, and come to understand what it really means toĀ ā€œloveā€ someone wholeheartedly.
3) Gary Oak from PokĆ©monThis is a bit of an odd one, but Gary is a character I related to a lot when I was an adolescent since, of the main series cast, he was the first and one of few to really change hisĀ ā€œstatus quoā€ by quitting training and deciding to become a researcher instead.Ā  In my eyes it seemed like a shockingly conscious choice toĀ ā€œgrow upā€ in a world where you can ostensibly remain aĀ ā€œchildā€ forever, and I both admired and deplored him for it (especially at that tender transitory age I was going through at the time, where it feels like youā€™re being forced to ā€œbecome an adultā€ whether you want to or not).
V - Which character do you relate to most?Already answered.W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.Romance in general is really not my thing, so I dislike when itā€™s the focus/the writers feel the need to pair every character.Ā  Iā€™d rather leave things open-ended most of the time.X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.Family/friendship stories + tragic adopted children wanting to be heroesY - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you arenā€™t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?X-Men, Kingdom Hearts, Dangan Ronpa, Fate/Stay Night, Various Magical Girl series, Various RPG Horror games
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)I feel like Iā€™ve rambled enough already phew. OTL Thanks for asking though. =P

idk... comparing f-h to g-f (which i quit maybe a yr... 2 yrs? ago)
story: they both have really annoying stories but in different ways. g-fā€™s protagonistsā€™ hypocrisy was what annoyed me the most- ā€œohhh belial is too horny we cant ever summon himā€ but then ā€œtheres a sexual killer and oodles of other nasty ppl were best buds lol!ā€ and just the cutesy and kinda bland tone of a lot of the stories- always around the same cluster of characters who you have to like but theyre just so generic and bleh.
with f-h its still like a.... cutesy ā€œyou have to like themā€ tone w the main characters, but i think its a different annoyance. whereas the g-f ones are admittedly just bland and bleh, they arent rlly doing much bad? necessarily. whereas the f-h protagonists are. murdering ppl for their own agendas, being creepy, ect.
gameplay: for g-f what turned me away was the difficulty spike and the fact a lot of content was inaccessible if you dont have the whatever grid build bullshit. whereas in f-h i can count on my fingers things you lose without grid build nonsense and its all pretty inconsequential (sure, somes like ā€œ1 orb a weekā€ but honestly its a fair payoff imo. the other stuff is like.. rokkr acces, those throne thingies, bragging rights, all stuff that i dont need). in f-h at least you can enjoy the game without pooling huge amts of time and energy and stress into the like.... nitty gritty, and what nitty gritty it does have is at least fairly ok to understand.
gacha: i think theres likely more characters i like in gacha in f-h than in g-f, since most of my favs were event free characters or npcs. i think the fact that f-h (and go tbh) are based on an existing source/story makes me more invested in the characters added to gacha rather than g-fā€™s ā€œgeneric anime character trope number 24ā€³. i think for me its bc i already have an impression on the character, good or bad, so i know if i want to roll them or stay away from the gacha. i never got the appeal of gachapin bc theres like a 1 in... how many chance of rolling selfi or on rare occasion sturm and drang, so it didnt rlly pay off. also sparking was too steep imo, i think the f-h method of guaranteed summon is more fair/achievable (like... clear 3 temp trials without spending orbs? thats tote fair)
and to be fair also go bc im not quitting it lol. im in it for the long run bc of sal and izou
story: ranges from rlly good and satisfying (ooku, lb 1-5.1, white day ā€˜19) to insultingly bad (gw ā€˜19-20, mystery ā€˜19, part 1/1.5, lb 5.2). unfortunately a lot of the stories dont understand that comedy and drama arent mutually exclusive and tend to be either ā€œthis character is so random xdā€ or ā€œthis character is so badly written they read like an ow the edge fanficā€. but some concepts are kinda cool- heck, most concepts are cool as concepts at least. so theres a lot of self-imagining potential. and like i said, some are good. most recently 5.1 was super nice and had a good balance of comedy and drama, which was awesome. and sad. very depressing
gameplay: difficulty spikes are rlly ew. but besides that it can be kinda fun and enjoyable. heck, even some of the difficult stuff is satisfying to complete in a way, just bc u can use your favorite/trusted characters to defeat someone really smug and annoying, looking at my ruler team and a 51 turn clear. imo a lot of draw in the ā€œseriousā€ story things is my personal gameplay/experience w it so seeing just the ā€œow the edgeā€ story isolated really kills a lot of the enjoyment. which means the gameplayā€™s doing something right lol. the class strengths and weaknesses mean a lot of fun opportunities to use a variety of characters.
gacha: absolute heck. but it has gotten kinder- the most notable is the sorta yearly? free 4 star tickets and the very generous free 5 star due to gw delay. (unfortunately permanent/non locked only but still! it was a tough choice between sanzo and nastaya!). the gacha itself has gone from no pity rate 40 quartz/10 pieces to yes pity rate 30 quartz/11 pieces. theyve even added low rarity characters (albeit only 7... rip but its a start!) that also become relevant in the story.
so yea, i think go is obviously winning. i honestly have no urge to go back to g-f, and depending on what happens w f-h i could end up putting it on the backburner (esp if more 16 characters are added, considering i rlly dont like the game lol)

Blu Blogs:Ā First Thoughts on OK K.O.!: Let's Be Heroes
So after a long day of highs and lows, I arrive home at around 5:40 pm with little expectation for anything big. I'd already heard about the teaser picture of Metal's leg and how Smash is totally, maybe (stay-tuned-for-more-news-because-this-is-how-Nintendo-rolls), coming to Switch . At best I was expecting the highlight for the new content to beļæ½ļæ½some cute new thing related to NEO-KOSMOS (even though we just got a new update the day prior). But no. We got something big, something unexpected. We got...
Tumblr media
STEVEN UNIVERSE: SAVE THE LIGHT (A SEQUEL TO THE 2015 APP ATTACK THE LIGHT) WHICH IS A FULL FLEDGED CONSOLE RPG WITH PAPER MARIO GAMEPLAY, 4 PLAYABLE PARTY MEMEBERS BEYOND THE 4 MAIN CRYSTAL GEMS AND A NEW STORY WRITTEN BY REBECCA SUGAR YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
But that isn't what we're here for today. Today we're here to talk about the long-awaited show 3+ years in the making: Lakewood Plaza Turb--
Tumblr media
Oh.
So I log onto tumblr and the first thing I see is this:
Tumblr media
So my eye is immediately drawn to the girl because girls are cute she's in the foreground, and I just don't recognize her. I look at the other characters and think "wait is that rad and k.o. what the HELL is going on". So logically, that means the girl is enid, ergo something is going on relating to Lakewood Plaza Turbo. I read the comment below that said "woooo OK KO! theshow iā€™ve been boarding on for over a year is finally announced!!!!"
Tumblr media
I immediately have SO. MANY. QUESTIONS. Is the series getting another app? More shorts? A game? What's going on?! And as I scroll down the truth comes alll the more clear:
Lakewood Plaza Turbo is finally becoming a show.
Tumblr media
REDEMPTIOOON SOOOOOOOONG
But not without some changes (ala Steven U). The artstyle, name of the show, and theme were all changed and just like Steven U my kneejerk reaction was "what the fuuuuck IIIIIIIIIIIIIIS this shit?". And also like Steven U it quickly grew on me and I accepted that this was the righteous path. Well, the artstyle and theme anyway, I'm still a bit iffy on the name. But enough context, let's talk about the show!
ok i lied, more context. so part of what contributed to my kneejerk reaction was the fact that Lakewood Plaza Turbo was in development purgatory for 3 years and in that time we got the app/shorts, but also in that time shows that had been in circulation for less time like We Bare Bears and Magiswords had gotten onto CN without seemingly as much struggle. I'd just given up hope for the series becoming a show and on top of that I'd even begun to lose my liking for the pilot, but then again Early Installment Weirdness is my Achilles heel of Tropes so make of what what you will. So when I saw the show come back in such a different form I was instantly turned off. Just from how it looked I was getting Teen Titans Go! & PPG16 vibes: a loss of the show's soul.
The artstyle looked so rudimentary and basic and the theme/intro wasn't doing it any favors, with its lyrics being very non-infortmative to the premise of the show: all fluff no substances. I had come to really like Lakewood Plaza Turbo's theme because its lyrics just felt as though they encompassed the tone and subject matter of the show: stupid(in a good way)ly-awesome with a video game/anime flare). But this was just....a non-event. And once again, the simplistic artstyle is so lame! Until I began to think of it another way...
Lakewood Plaza Turbo/OK K.O.! are clearly rooted deeply in gaming/anime culture and in some ways the new theme, title, and artstyle reflect this. Starting with the new theme, check out the opening shot of it panning from space all the way down to the plaza and the shot of K.O. staring down Lord Box Man with the opposing sides behind them.
Tumblr media
Not only is this shot really badass, but it just REEKS of anime influence! And that extends to the theme! The simplistic subject matter and referenec to being friends/heroes feels very reminiscent of 90's anime with Engrish lyrics that have a very simple, positive vibe. It fits! The subtitle "Let's Be Heroes" also reflects it but I'm not as fond of it. You know it's going to be akin to "Adventure Time with Finn and Jake", "The Amazing World of Gumball, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" and "The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius": extra parts of the title that'll all be abandoned in advertising and common discussion in a year. Regardless, the title/opening grew on me. And the artstyle? Awesome! While initially reluctant I came to realize that Lakewood's artstyle wasn't all that impressive. I never really liked K.O. and Enid's noses so the cute little square Elmo/Stan Pines gumdrop is cute.
Tumblr media
Precious.
And in general, Lakewood sort've had a generic 2010s base artstyle. It definitely had defining features such as the eyes, aforementioned noses, and character designs but the colors used along with the thin lines didn't do much to set it apart. The new proportions, radically unique way of drawing things, and scraggly crayon-like lines should help. I initially thought the style was too squishy and inconsistent but not in the good, Ren and Stimpy/Steven Universe way. But after I got addicted to the visuals in the opening, I began to really enjoy the style and see the merits of it. Especially in this shot.

It looks SO cool.
I have no idea what this artstyle resembles but the closest I can attribute it too is Sonic CD/Mega Drive and Mega Man which I LOVE.
Tumblr media
Also forgot one thing! Both Mega Drive and OK K.O.! have scraggy outlines
It does wonders for K.O., Carol, Lord Box Man (especially Lord Box Man, the way his mouth is drawn all muppet like gives him a real sense of dimension and it's great),

Perfection.
and the other tertiary/background characters but Enid, Rad, and Mr. Gar...
Tumblr media
Umm....
Yeaaaaah. Now granted, that opening shot of them isn't doing many favors since admittedly they look REALLY bad (mostly Enid), but even without it they still look a bit. The simple geometrics really makes Gar and Rad's muscles look not very good due to how, well, simple they are. Enid on the other hand suffers an almost opposite issueā€”her legs are Ā sometimes drawn with definition/shape (like with the black and white photo storyboarder's picture from the beginning of the Blog) which makes sense considering she's probably based on Chun-Li. Other times, like the picture just above this paragraph, and this one:

Her legs are basically parallel lines that bend. Even worse is that shot above seems to be from an actual episode, meaning Enid will likely look like that a lot. In general, I think I don't think I'm happy with the new design choices for Enid. Not only is there the leg thing, but her ponytail and bandaged torso from Lakewood were a lot more appealing.
Tumblr media
Even so it's not impossible to make any of these design choices look great. Just check out the official poster and you'll see all of them, especially the 3 we've been talking about for the past while look great.
Tumblr media
One last thing to note on Rad/Gar/Enid's proportions: The strange Garnet-esque chest proportions on Enid and Rad's shirts despite their lower torsos indicating that there's nothing under said shirts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enid is a bit more understandable, as nothing about her lower torso indicates that something should be up there but this man Rad is /shredded/. You should definitely be able to see his biceps leading into the shirt, as made evident by Mr. Gar. These don't necessarily detract from the excitement of the show, but they're worth note and could become problematic if made out to be very obnoxious out of proportion in show.
Two more design changes to note before we wrap up: K.O. has a darker skin tone (which I like) and now has buttface.
Tumblr media
Buttface, along with flat simplistic colors and thin lines will go down as the defining aesthetic traits of the 2010s.
And also Rad's antenna have gone from being on the front of his forehead to in the middle of the top of his head, which looks a lot less awkward tbh. Overall good choice.
Despite the many issues it has, the artstyle still looks pretty different from everything else we have atm, and the simple way the characters are drawn should be beneficial as with said simple characters action scenes will be a lot easier to make and thus we'll be able to get higher quality, well-animated fight scenes. Despite the bad initial reaction, I have high hopes for OK K.O. Long as they keep the tone and spirit of Lakewood Plaza Turbo alive we could be looking at the next big show. Oh, and great on Ian for percerviering and becoming the second African American to create a CN original. Can't wait to see the young K.O. rise up to greatness just like his creator.
p.s. for being the defensive teammate, steven's hp sure is garbage in that screenshot of attack the light
