It was a very rainy day on Sodor, but it was also a busy day for the workers. Many were with their engines, waiting for their passengers to come aboard, and some were waiting for their trucks to deliver. A splatter and splosh came when Gordon arrived in Knapford Station. The walls were rather damp and the rain came down hard. The hall was filled with many visitors, that the station was rather cramped.

Gordon walked down the puddle-ridden floors, making sure he didn't slip. Passing through, he stopped and took a look at Sodor's Rumours. And there he saw what he didn't want to be reminded of everyday:

SODOR NEWS NWR'S EMPLOYEES DROPPING DEAD LIKE FLIES!

Here on Sodor News, drivers in the North Western Railway have been starting to disappear with no trace. The reason for this event is unknown, however.

Many of the police have been looking for the missing drivers, as they were an important part to this railway.

“What a shame, what a shame”, said one. “I knew one of them. He was a very kind soul, and I'd say he was friends with many people. I don't know what cruel person would wanna lay a finger on him”....

Gordon stopped there as he couldn't stare at it any longer. Waking up alone was already hard enough. His heart had sunk deeper and deeper the more he read the article. He shifted his attention to the rain. The earthly smell and the calming sound reminded him of another rainy day he had with two other people, whom he cherished very much...

“Gordon, look!”

“Oh, bother. It's raining...Henry, do you have an umbrella?”

“What? Why are you asking me? I wasn't aware it was going to rain.”

“Well boo-hoo, neither did I. Edward?”

“Nope. Sorry, Gordon. Looks like we’re all gonna get damped here. Oh, here it comes!”

“Heavens sake! I just got this dried!”

“The rain isn’t that bad, Henry.”

“Huh...wait a minute....”

“Gordon? What are you...—”

“Here, get in.”

“Ah! Come on Henry!”

“Finally! Some shelter from this cursed weather!”

“Hahaha, we're all rather cramped up here! Not that I don't mind.”

“Pah! Of course. It's always an honor to be under the rain with me. After all, I was the one who came up with this clever idea.”

“Well, congratulations, Mr. Cleversome. So wonderful of you to help us ’damsels in distress' with the rain.”

“You were the one complaining about it, you hypocrite!”

“Hush, you two! That's enough. Now, let's go back home, shall we?”

He winced at the memory that was once jovial, now painful to think about. “If only you were still here with me”, he muttered under his breath. Gordon let out a heavy sigh as he turned away and continued walking down the station. “After all, I still have a student to train”, he said to himself.

But just as he was making his way down the crowd, he had a hard collision with someone. The person was just about to fall, until Gordon grabbed them.

At first, he was annoyed. He had enough to deal with this morning and didn't want to add more to his plate. He was just about to lecture them. “It’s okay, just.. please, watch where you’re going next ti....”

But his words trailed off when he saw who was in his arms.

He couldn't believe his eyes.

This person...was..rather old. His skin was wrinkled and he had an average structure. He was shorter than Gordon. His hair had been grayed out with two whiter streaks showing, and he wore a black collared shirt accompanied by a blue vest that had a number 2 imprinted on his right arm, and vibrant overalls, all with red and gold touches. His frail skin had beautiful ivory patches all over it, and most importantly, glasses, that looked similar to the ones put on his face right now. Gordon couldn't believe what he was staring at, and refused to do so. Until, the person opened his voice....

“...Gordon? What happened to you?”, he said in an concerned voice. “You look pale, and...your eyes.. You look terrible! What's the matter?”

His voice was tender and gentle, but the hints of firmness and hoarseness was enough for Gordon to tremble in realization.

To say he was shocked is an understatement. He was terrified. “I must be dreaming”, he thought, as his chest grew tighter and tighter. “This can’t be possible...”

He looked down at the man with a mix of emotions; regret, misery, shock and fear. But the image of this mysterious person only made Gordon hold him tighter. It's feels the same way when he once held one of his friends like this. He felt warm, reassured, safe... But the feeling in his body made him wake up to the reality that this person isn't his, and it made him feel bitter. It was a long moment of silence before Gordon finally spoke...

“...Edward..?”

Hello! Not an ask, just wanted to say I adore your content; you're so skilled. I came across your art first, and the drama of even the smallest panel; I'd been eyeing JoDT & sequels for awhile because it was a WIP, but I caved and binged bks1-4 in about three days. I reread the "Eat your heart out Pureblood society" scene at least once a day, thank you for that, superb execution. I also really liked, in the first book, the interactions between Malfoy & Harry, and the very gradual "well, he's our friend now." The development of their friendship has done a great job of re-defining the characters and their relationships. The series feels like its own thing, and the fact that Ginny never even had the diary in book 2 only cemented that. I've really appreciated the deviation from Draco-the-tortured-hero/Draco-making-amends (which I also love to read). Horrors of the Heir was a great twist and really put the whole series in another tier, tbh. CoS was like, my least favorite of the series as a kid (alongside GoF, which has grown on me as I read fanfic) and your version of bk 2 easily established the micro-obsession of your series for me. Also, Crabbe & Goyle?? "They're actually really good friends"?? "Just to see if we feel anything"?? Adorable. Obsessed.

tldr; Your rewrite of the series is incredibly unique, and I admire how you've really taken the series and made it something completely fun and new and modern 💜💜💜

I adored writing the "Eat Your Heart Out" scene. People tend to forget that Draco Malfoy is canonically *very* dramatic when he wants to be. Yes, he can be sulky and scheming, but he also shouts taunts across the courtyard, and puts on scenes to make older students laugh at Harry’s expense, even going so far as to dress up as a Dementor to make his "rival" lose in Quidditch.

The Horror of the Heir was such an experience for me as the author, because CoS is my favourite book from the series (weird, ik) and looking back, I sort of realise I could’ve squeezed in so much more. But last May, 45k was a HUGE amount of words for me! And now I'm churning out 100k like nobody's business 💀

And speaking of growth, the reason I had Draco take Tom Riddle’s diary was purely because of growth. It would've taken him far longer to change as a person if he hadn't taken Ginny's place. A pivotal character development moment, as he reflects on his upbringing etc...

Crabbe and Goyle generally get overlooked in the fandom, and it really bugs me. Vince dies canonically, yes, but I absolutely love it when fic writers incorporate Greg as an actual character in post-war fics, and acknowledge that Vince was Draco’s friend.

It's always Blaise, Pansy, and Theo because they're intelligent and societies definition of "attractive." I mean, each to their own of course, but I could write an entire essay on the injustice I feel for Crabbe and Goyle!

And then, of course, the development of Draco’s relationship with the Golden Trio, specifically Harry. Just -- Ugh-- these silly kids make me so unhinged!😂

It wouldn't be all sunshine and rainbows to begin with. Of course it wouldn't. It's a rocky start, with bumps along the way (and more big bumps to come), but I really do love the way I have progressed their relationship, and I'm not even gonna be humble about it! I really do love my own fic!!!

All this to say, thank you so much!!! I realise fix-its are a very popular type of fic to write, but I really do try to keep it as fresh and unique as possible, so the fact that I really am able to give my readers an experience means the world to me💖

Thank you so much for the kind words about my writing in that series, it’s one that specifically holds a very dear place in my heart as a neurodivergent person!

I have been meaning to continue working on the series, I already have multiple WIPs going even, but the reason I haven’t gotten to upload another part to it is because I’ve been running into a couple roadblocks that I can’t seem to figure out, largely due to continuity.

(You don’t necessarily have to read this next paragraph, it’s partially me voicing my thoughts out loud as I ruminate on things, though if anyone has some input on it, I’d love to hear what y’all think) The main one is that I realized about a year and a half ago that alongside being ADHD, I’m also autistic, and it occurred to me that I’ve unknowingly also been writing Bokuto as autistic as a result, but I haven’t included anything about him being autistic in the narrative and introspection of the stories. With the timeline of the main events of the series, he’s already established in his career, but what made me realize that I’m autistic is how much I was struggling with the massive change in routine of living away from home for my last two years of university. Maybe I’m overthinking this and just getting in my own head about it and it really isn’t that complicated but part of me is wondering if it’s too late to incorporate him being autistic??? I want to have his realization be due to the same circumstances but even though I’ve included things into the other stories that allude to him also being autistic, I don’t know if it’d mess with the continuity. Granted, most of the neurodivergent-specific things I’ve touched on in the series have been ADHD-related but Idk if there’s an organic way to just slot in him being autistic too

Either way, I do hope to get to writing more for the series and there’s already a couple I can think of where I could include that little detail you mentioned in your post, so that’s absolutely going to be in the series if I have anything to say about it (And I do, because I’m the author :D)! kit's fics year in review (2023)

it turns out i wrote a LOT this year (last year now, i guess) according to my ao3 stats, and i saw one of those recap games for another fandom floating around my dash so im absolutely gonna pilfer some of those questions for my own little review + add a few!!

how many fics did you write in 2023? it was definitely the year of the silly short fic for me -- i published a total of 6 new oneshots on ao3 along with 5 fics only on my kofi! i also added at least one chapter to 9 other fics that were already posted. and i started and completed 1 long stand alone fic this year (if you love me let it remain unnamed, clocking in at 37k)

what are you most proud of fic-writing wise in 2023? i finished foolproof, foolhardy! it took more than a year to write, from first published to last updated, but i think the lion's share of the work happened during 2023; it's sort of rare for a fic of mine to get that long (72k), so it was fun to write through all the developments. truly a cracky premise that grew legs and ran away from me, but i'm really proud of how it turned out. the last 4 chapters contain some of my best writing in my opinion and the whole story is a love letter to padawan obi-wan, who will always be my beloved lol

what is the fic you had the most fun writing? this is a tough question because i'm torn between two fics; sun, sun, sun here it comes is probably my favorite oneshot that i've ever written. it sorta incorporates everything that makes a silly little au in my mind, from miscommunication to banter to bonus babies. but then there's i pray the same, but my gods have changed, aka the democratic fic- now that's such a fun fic to write, and i'm going to get more into it this year again. it's the one where tumblr votes on what should happen next, which i absolutely enjoy - especially when people send me propaganda about which option should win....thought the amount of ties that have happened is mind-boggling lol

what is a fic you didn't expect to write? hahaha well this is easily 'a more perfect union' which has been sooo fun to write so far but also definitely has had a very short gestation period from nascent tumblr au post to 25k on ao3 lol and still one more chapter to go!!!

what fic surprised you when you were writing it? oh hands down this is 'hand me down dreams got me high in the rafters', aka the pool boy au from tumblr. the adaptation of it from tumblr au to a fic on ao3 has a crazy tone shift where the obi-wan in that fic is much, much darker than the one in the tumblr au - i really ended up leaning into the unequal power dynamics of a boss/employee relationship and exploring how unhealthy it could be while keeping it consensual -- but only because anakin would allow obi-wan to do whatever he wanted to him

what's a fic you wanted to write but didn't? my poor neglected hunger games au!! i really want to get the first chapter of that posted because i am so excited about this fic and writing it as a new big, long project -- i'm excited about the dark anakin, the differently dark obi-wan, the hunger games set in the gffa, etc etc etc

what is something you learned this year that you'll take into 2024? set is the only acceptable name for anakin to use undercover <3 we will be taking the set cinematic universe into 2024 <3

what's a project you're excited to carry into the new year? um all of my wips lol but especially time & tide and the couples counseling au - i have about half of the next chapter of t&t written, and before i got sidetracked by a more perfect union, i was on track to get that posted by christmas....obviously that did not happen lol but i'm expecting to get back to working on a few more chapter updates at the beginning of this year!

Tricky, I don't usually finish on angst. Echo (Wtfock) follows on from a very horrendous part of the show or Season 5 - Magnus (Skam) never got finished so it's been left in the midst of angst.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of them end on a happy note but Love, Henry (RWRB) is probably the happiest.

Do you get hate on fics?

I think there was a little back when I started in Riverdale but I think it more anger on their part for a topic I could have written more sensibly I suppose? I've had critique on fics now but never hate.

Do you write smut?

I've written it one time years ago & it felt weird. I loooove writing foreplay though! But I've not ventured into smut in my current fandoms. That might be something I do though, my bigender Alex fic might go into that if there's sequel.

Craziest crossover:

I've only done one and it was a Riverdale meets Teen Wolf, it was a Christmas special and they had to help reunite Santa with his reindeer. While I haven't watched Riverdale for ages, I'm still really proud of that fic!

Firstprince (RWRB) probably. Wilmon (Young Royals) is a close second atm, I'd love to write some YR fics soon. I'm still a massive Yousana (Skam) and Davenzi (Druck) shipper too. Oh and Nathan/Annalise/Gabriel (TBSATDH) - can't remember the ship name! That show got cancelled too soon & it was basically like a fix it for the books.

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I have a Teen Wolf reader insert fic with a pregnancy story line that I left on a huge cliffhanger but frustrates me but not enough to motivate to finish it. I also have my Skam season 5 - Magnus fic that I'd love to finish one day but I haven't found the plan I made for it originally.

What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and character voice I think?

What are your writing weaknesses?

Plotting? I'm good at writing scenes but writing a longer storyline in fanfic is something I struggle with.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

If you can do it, go for it! I wish I could incorporate more Spanish in my RWRB fics but alas I only got French or German at my school, I only stuck with French. Maybe I'll brush up & add some in for Henry (RWRB) or Nick (Heartstopper).

I don't celebrate holidays myself. or like, I kinda do because family does and I get pulled into that whether I like it or not, but holidays in general aren't my thing. I love to incorporate them into stories because festivities can be perfect for giving characters different environments to act in and/or be really good to show the passage of time. sometimes some one-shots use holidays to build off canon in those ways and I like those, but I don't seek out holiday fic. and anything based on western chirstian holiday traditions for shows based in non-christian countries has to do the gymnastics to explain why the fuck that's happening or i mute.

if I still like it after I post! I go thru cycles of hating my posted fic but overall, I like what I have up more often than the days I don't. which is really good, because I'm my most frequent reader and!! gotta keep that bitch happy!!

and also, on a more serious note, my reaction to a story is the only thing I can control about it after I post. what gets attention vs what doesn't is impossible to control or guess and I just really, really hate when I feel discouraged because I didn't hit a certain number of comments or notes or whatever on a thing. any time after I post, I pretty much just spend the next several hours pretending I'm the only person with any opinion of value and taking screenshots of the bits I like. I try (and usually fail lol, but I try!!) not to read comments until after I've hyped myself on what I posted so that I'm just excited to gush about what I wrote instead of using any of people's lovely responses as a measuring stick. which isn't the best for helping me respond to anything in a timely fashion, but idk a better way to ensure I'm posting for me rip.

3. on a scale of 1-10 how much do you enjoy incorporating romance into the average story?

Oh my goodness, I am a slut for it. It is almost always a focal point of every damn thing I write. I cannot help it.

11. what’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?

Every since I posted the story Silver Coins, I am haunted by the fact that she brought out two plates instead of one, which was more of a common practice in the 9th century England.

As a result, I now pride myself in my research. I spend days on an idea or concept, and even go as far to check the etymology of a word to see if it can actually fit.

Spoiler? I hardly know her!

31. tell us about one of your characters who’s an absolute joy to write

It is Osferth. He is definitely my comfort character, I truly adore writing for him. I just love the tragedy of his character and how he responds to the world around him. It is so much fun for me.

Tom Bennett is a close second, though. And currently, I am enjoying writing for Satoru Gojo. 😆

40. best piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten.

I had someone who mentioned I needed to emphasize more of time jumps, if they were in my stories, so that will haunt me forever.

54. what’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?

Do not force it. You'll burn yourself out. If the words aren't coming, you can revisit what sparked the idea originally, to see if they'll flow again, or just step away and write something else entirely.

55. do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?

No WIP is abandoned for me.

They are horrible neglected and accumulate a large amount of dust before I clean them up and post. Sometimes my muses flit off for other things or sometimes you hear nothing for feedback, so that uncertainty settles into your bones and you go off to do something else entirely.

But I always go back. I have posted stories that have sat in my drafts for a year before I finally went back and finished it.

60. where is the most dangerous place that you’ve written fic?

At my job. They gave us notebooks and now everyone thinks I am an avid note taker, but it is smut, it is pages of research on how to make soap or random blurbs that spill from me.

After much thought, I want to start writing about my ace discovery and journey because there really is not much out there for anyone struggling with being asexual. On a personal note, I feel that if I had never ventured into fic writing, I may not have had the courage to start a project like this.

so i have absolutely decided to make a director’s cut version of my current wip that will be published when it’s finished because of that one post about making directors cuts.

so i’m just gonna post a couple of examples of the range of commentary you can expect from me when i’m not limited to ao3 end notes.

everything below the cut is from chapter 25 of and your heart love has such darkness so don’t read it if you’re not up to date on chapter 25 and care about spoilers.

Grandfather cut him off before he could get any further, “Cornelius, what in the name of Merlin, Morgana and Hecate made you think that an appropriate course of action was to not inform me that a member of my House, my previous Heir no less, escaped Azkaban, before running your mouth to the Prophet.”

this i think really highlights a clear difference in how wizarding society is organised as compared to ‘general western government’ or even than extent compared to other governments in the wizarding world though as of writing this i really haven’t fleshed that out.

but fudge is only the head of one branch of government even though he’s the head of state. but beyond that fudge is a new house. so technically it’s not disrespectful for arcturus to address fudge by his given name since arcturus is the very top of the social hierarchy. but at the same time there is a blatant disrespect considering the fact that they are in the ministers office and fudge just addressed them by their titles. it’s the fact that arcturus can do this and face no backlash that illustrates the position in society he holds.

Once he had accounted for everyone, he had summoned Lord Black engaged the wards of Black Manor making it so that no one could move beyond the perimeter of the dining room without his express permission. The silence broke at the realisation of what he had done, an eruption of indignance of complaints of how he had trapped them, Arcturus took stock of who had joined the three residents of Black Manor: Lucretia Prewett, Phineas Black, Callidora Longbottom, Cedrella Weasley, Cygnus Black, Marius Black, Narcissa and Draco Malfoy, Andromeda and Nymphodora Tonks. Merlin’s balls the state of his House, laden with Blood Traitors and the elderly and decrepit, it was disgusting.

this definitely wasn’t an original thought i had this is definitely a concept i’ve seen in fics over the years.

the duality of man guys. some of this is genuine literary analysis, some of this is just jokes, some of this is just me being like i read this concept once 10 years ago and now i’m incorporating it. some of this is just anecdotes from my life like i start waxing poetic about peafowl in chapter six.

so this is the type of thing you can expect from the directors cut it really is just my normal a/n’s but on crack and with colour coded line references. and i am writing this whether or not anyone wants to read it because i genuinely find literary analysis to be really fun but whether it sees the light of day is down to you guys as my readers letting me know if this is the type of thing you want.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes, I try to always respond, but then I often don’t succeed at that. I like to say “thank you” when I can and I love getting comments so it feels nice to say thanks. But if I ever fail to reply to comments please know how much I appreciate them and how happy it makes me that anyone else enjoys what I write! It’s so fun to share. 

What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? It doesn’t have its ending yet but probably The Bargain. It’s … a weird story that’s headed to weird places. That symbiote snippet I posted a while back? Yeah, that's where The Bargain gets these idiots.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Ooh, I’ll pick a completed one and say The Law Is Reason (Free From Passion).  

Do you get hate on fics? I haven’t yet, but I have been appalled at the disgusting harassment members of my fandom have experienced on AO3 and elsewhere. It’s really sad and gross. The amount of abuse my fellow Haladriel/Saurondriel writers have endured is absolutely abhorrent and wrong.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yeah, I think most of my fics include smut. I have written an Aronwyn/Haladriel foursome, one of if not the first Bronwyndriel-without-the-guys fics on AO3, multiple rounds of Haladriel virginity loss, random gratuitous smut, and Omegaverse smut. 

Do you write crossovers? If so, what's the craziest one you've written? Nope! 

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of, but I’ve definitely seen it happen to varying degrees, and it’s another one of those things that makes me shake my fist at the clouds about the internet. 

Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! Such an honor … although I only wish I could read the translator’s work in their language, which alas, I definitely cannot. But ALSO, I have a fic that's being podficced and I literally cried with joy the first time I listened to the first chapter.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? No, I haven’t! I have done loads of brainstorming and “yes-and”-ing with writing pals though and that’s so fun and creatively rewarding.  

What's your all time favourite ship? It’s fucking Sauron and Galadriel, guys. It just is. I can’t. I wasn’t built to withstand TROP Season 1 without becoming permanently damaged and fully unhinged for this ship of doom. 

What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Errrr … yeah, I do, and it annoys me because I want to read the story. It’s a Drarry AU I started probably 12 years ago featuring Amnesia!Harry and Psychiatrist!Draco. 

What are your writing strengths? Feelings. Porn with feelings. Banter.

What are your writing weaknesses? Action. Plot. Really need to figure out how to plot, and then, you know, do it. I prefer to vibe and chill with the characters, which is why I have a bunch of vibes-y one-shots and then some really long WIPs that have some serious question marks left on their outlines.  

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? When it’s incorporated smoothly, it can be really nice, but I don’t do it much, because I am not fluent in any of the languages my characters speak. Parf Edhellen is my bestie.

First fandom you wrote for? Uhhh it may have been some accidental semi-RPF back in the day in a composition book while I was in junior high. First online-published fandom? Harry Potter, like every other millennial of a certain age.  

Favourite fic you've ever written? Whaaaat no, how do I choose? I love them all in different ways. My favorite non-TROP fic: Drarry Forever. It's so cute. I loved writing it and I love reading it. My favorite TROP canon AU: The Chain. It's very much my exercise in "writing what I think TROP should have done instead" and there are parts that always give me chills. My favorite modern AU: Just What I Needed. It's the most personal story I have going and it's so much fun to write!

My Hylink story Adore I wrote for Zelink Week 2023. It's 5 chapters of angst and 2 of marital bliss (I do wish it had gotten a bit more traction on AO3. I was pretty proud of it when I wrote it) many thanks to my beta @fioreofthemarch!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not yet! I only have 14 dedicated readers and they're all so lovely, and leave positive comments. TYSM!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Um, not until recently 😂🤣 I wanted to try my hand at smut with I Belong to You (which was supposed to be a one-shot)

So it does have some smut in it, but honestly, it's story driven and the steamy scenes add to the story, characterizations, and motivation. I actually am very proud of this story and think it's the best thing I've written to date. And many thanks to my fantastic betas @hyylia and @zeldaelmo

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

No. Although I do think you could easily write a cross-over with Legend of Zelda and Adventure Time.

No. My stuff isn't that good 😂

No, but I would like to with someone who is good at transitions, etc. Sometimes it will take me days to wrap up chapters because my mind goes completely blank when it comes time to write sequels to a scene 😭

Zelink. It's the ship that brought me back to writing.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Well...my current WIP Captain Link Araki and the Harbinger of Destiny is giving me a WORLD of trouble, but I do love the character of Link I've created for it, so I'm going to try my hardest to complete it by the new year!

I have a HP WIP I started, and will probably never complete. It was an expansion of a short story I wrote called Aphrodite's Destiny (which I still absolutely love, even though the writing is probably not polished)

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and characterization (at least, that is what I think my strengths are! My readers may disagree!)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Descriptive writing (like the setting, lighting, what the characters are wearing, etc) that isn't boring or like reading a list! I worked on it in I Belong to You and hope I can continue to incorporate what I learned in my future stories.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Hmmm, I haven't thought much about that. I did include some song lyrics in I Belong to You that were in French and were supposed to represent the Rito language, but I included Zelda's thoughts about what those words meant.

I suppose if I were to write dialogue in another language, I would write the dialogue in italicized English but reference that they're actually speaking in another language.

hi morgan! i hope you're well. i've got a Lot of asks for the end-of-year ask game, but hey, it's the end of the year, we may as well go out with a bang! how about 1, 3, 9, 10, 15, 16 (I know you like to match your songs to your wips), 18, 19, 20, 21 and 30? <3

honey! thank you for this! i've answered 10 and 19 here for spook, but let's tackle the rest of them! i can't really do short answers, so this is going to be monstrous.

1: this year i've definitely tried to write things that are a tiny bit more adult! i still won't do explicit sex scenes, but i've definitely pushed my boundaries in songs from within birdcages, lichtenberg, and the minchan vampire au, and it's been pretty fun to push myself out of my comfort zone with that and figure out how to incorporate those scenes into a story.

3: i think i've learned that i genuinely enjoy writing things closer to horror! with lichtenberg, the vampire au, and my nanowrimo original project (currently on hiatus while i recover from the health issues and nano burnout) i've had the opportunity to write things that are kind of weird and awful and uncanny, and i've found that i absolutely love doing it. here's to getting spookier in 2024!

9: the red thread au has meant so much to me to write; as a queer person, and someone autistic, and someone who frequently experiences the very weird sensation of not being quite as real as everyone around me, it's been a joy to write the story of seungmin slowly being drawn into humanity and all its joys by his soulmate. it's gentle and soft and i've loved exploring things like new sensory experiences and seungmin learning to understand his perception of his gender and sexuality and the idea of feeling like he belongs. it'll be a while before it's finished to a degree i think is satisfactory, but i'm excited to share it eventually.

15: i only posted two fics this year, so i'll rec the one i'm not currently posting! songs from within birdcages is a science fiction adventure romance between a freighter pilot and the high-end prostitute he falls in love with and plans to set free; it's a story of hope, and home, and love enduring despite darkness, and a determined belief in fairytales; it gets dark at times, but there's always a light at the end. i'm genuinely very proud of it, and i'm planning a sort of spin-off next year covering my favourite side ship and how a romance could develop between a man and a machine who's only just learning how to feel.

16: writing songs!!!! hell yes!!! you know i love a writing song!!!! i'll include five, one for each fic i've worked on this year.

20: my favourite ending line of the year is definitely the last line of songs from within birdcages:

The lights of the Rinan Cluster fade away behind them, electric lilac and artificial green; and by the time Chan and Hyunjin remember to try to watch them go - to witness their past blur into nothing but pinpricks in the far distance, indistinguishable from the stars - they’ve disappeared entirely.

it's a good end to hyunjin and chan's journey, i think, to be so absorbed in one another that they forget to watch the old life that hurt them so badly fade away. they deserve that.

21: my favourite piece of dialogue is this little snippet from the beekeeper au; i think it just really shows off chan's warmth and his enthusiasm for his bees!

“You don’t have to get right up close,” he tells Jisung. “But it’s worth it if you feel comfortable with it. They’re beautiful little creatures, and amazing builders.” He smiles, looking almost giddy with joy. “Every time I look in the hives I fall in love with them a bit, you know? Seeing what they can do.” “I don’t really know a lot about bees,” Jisung admits, and Chan shakes his head animatedly. “That’s ok! I can tell you a few things. Just, uh- let me know if I go on about it too much, yeah? I tend to get carried away.”

30: i have so much i want to write in 2024 on top of finishing current projects! i'd love to finally sit down and write the minchan hanahaki au (hanahaki is next after vampires on the list of 'tropes i've been desperate to write but only once i think i have something unique to bring to it'), as well as the 2min songs from within birdcages spinoff. i think i'd also love to write something for another fandom; i have a small store of wangxian ideas i'd love to write, but i keep getting drawn back into skz.

Under the cut for some observations.

I have written a lot over the years and most of it is not fic, but here is what I can observe from original, fic, poetry and nonfiction. These are in no particular order, though I saved the best for last.

Identity I like to write about what makes a person themselves. A lot of my early spoken word poetry talked about body image and how to exist in a world like ours as a person who is not considered thin. Some of my favorite nonfiction pieces discussed what it was like to be a college student working retail and being recognized as other-than-a-retail-worker in public and how identity shifts between roles. In my fic, I explore a few things like what makes a hero a hero? Who are you when change/fate/destiny upends everything you've ever known? How do you become the person you're supposed to be?

Strength Especially in a lot of my fic, posted or otherwise, I think this crops up perhaps almost as much as identity. What does it mean to be strong? What sort of events do we weather and get to the other side of it? For who are we strong? Is being strong the same as being brave? What kinds of strength do we need in our daily lives and how does it affect our decisions? In the fic, we see a lot of the strength to overcome adversity by nature of the quest. But we also see, which dives into another point, the strength to forgive, the strength to confront ourselves for our behavior, and the strength to move forward, even when it hurts.

Friendship Ah, the power of friendship :> But no, even in a lot of my fic WIP ideas and fragments, there's a lot to be said of relationships within fiction that show different kinds of love and support than what is expected of a certain pairing or tag. There are a ton of different expressions of love, and I think one of the most underutilized is strong, solid friendships. This also incorporates found family or portraying a group of people who have decided against all odds that they will go out of their way for one another regardless of circumstances. When I write good friendships, I do it because it reminds me irl that we are worthy of this kind of support and we are capable of giving this kind of support, and not everything has to be as one-dimensional as popular media can sometimes show. Fic is the perfect place to explore it because it's decoupled from marketing, generally, and we don't have to worry too much about what sells (: So I lean into it where and when I can.

Mistakes This one is kind of rather broad. I could have listed specific kinds of mistakes but then we'd be here forever LOL but suffice to say I do write flawed characters that don't always know the next right thing. In my poetry, I talked about the mistakes I've made and observed in my time. I have given some of the mistakes I've made and observed to my characters in original and especially in World. Part of this category though is asking the question of how do these mistakes affect others? What does it take to forgive? Can they be forgiven, and why or why not? Is the character flaw so deep that there is no redemption for them? Are there certain kinds of mistakes that change who a person is completely? What is the cost of forgiveness? There's a lot to play with in this category without even having to get down to specifics. :>

Hope This is my favorite thing to write into any of my work ever. Perhaps because real life can be so very difficult and can seem so very bleak sometimes. Combined with everything above, I absolutely write hope into things, even if my stories seem rather bleak at the outset. For World, all of my POV characters have bits and pieces of tragedies that I have had to endure in my life and it's extremely cathartic to see them get through their drama, hardship, grief, self-inflicted chaos, and other things. Because it reminds me that there is hope yet for this place, if there is hope in their world. It is a form of healing for me to put them in situations they can get out of. So hope. The most important theme, I think, for my writing. (:

*sigh* Not as often as I should. If someone leaves a long comment or an enthusiastic one or asks a question then I'll usually respond. But I don't like that AO3 includes replies in the comment count. I don't like inflating the number by responding to everything.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hmm. I guess Eighty-Sixed? My dark version of SPN but I did kind of subvert it right at the end because I'm me.

Probably Braver Than You Think. My middle finger fuck you to canon deaths!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Hate is a strong word. The one I posted anonymously ended up with ✨️drama✨️ on it because someone accused me of stealing their friend's idea and then some other people swooped in to attack that person and defend me and then some other person said I needed Jesus lol. But other than that one fic, no 😂

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I have done but I don't write it nearly as much as I used to and the more I don't write it, the more I don't think I probably can anymore. But I do have some in the back pocket should the mood strike. And it's usually pretty intimate stuff these days. Actually depends on the pairing, I guess. Not really opposed to trying my hand at anything.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

If we're talking actual crossovers and not just AUs, I have written one and that was my Supernatural/Santa Clarita Diet one which was a LOT of fun to write. I do have two other SPN crossover fics on my to-do list that I'm excited to get to eventually 👀

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes! It was forever ago, over on ff.net. I don't even remember how I found out. I think the "author" actually messaged me asking permission to plagiarise my fic even though they'd already done it. But they took my Castle fic, did find & replace on the character names and turned it into a Big Time Rush fic. Absolute shenanigans.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I had someone ask if they could but I don't know if it ever actually happened.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

I have not. I don't know that I'd be able to, tbh. I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to writing.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

At this point, it probably has to be Destiel, right? It's endured this long. I still look back fondly on all my ships but none make me quite so feral as those two do.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Ugh. I made the mistake of rereading my Reed900 fic the other day and I actually really love it still. But I have no memory of where it was going and no clue where any of my notes are so it's probably dead. There's also my "Richie goes back to Derry to dig Eddie out of Neibolt" fic but I DO still have all my notes for that one so foolishly I keep telling myself maybe one day...

I think I'm good at coming up with novel ideas. Or at least unique approaches to things. And I'm quite good at capturing a character's voice.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

You mean aside from actually...writing? I suck at writing action or setting a scene. I focus so much on dialogue and internal emotions that I don't realise I've never said where anyone is or anything to paint a clear picture.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic.

I've done it a few times but unless I know someone who speaks the language, I don't really like relying on Google Translate to get things right.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Knowingly, it must have been The Monkees. But I was writing self-insert stories when I was a little kid involving Sonic and Bill & Ted and The A-Team...

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

This is an impossible question. I guess Braver Than You Think. Especially because a fic author I'd been following for over a decade commented on it and that was the coolest shit ever.

hi rae!! i was wondering if you could tell us more about your writing process :)) im very curious about it. like, do you brainstorm then write or write whatever flows or both. do you painstakingly line edit after or just give it a glance for any mistakes. im mostly curious about atydsp bc its so exceptionally well written and it absolutely boggles my mind that you were posting a ch a day. how much of your time for atydsp involved editing/scrapping & rewriting/etc? xx

hi sure i'd be happy to!! gonna put this under a cut tho bc it got long lol

for atydsp (+ my captive prince rewrite) my process was pretty different from my other writing in that i basically descended into a feverish haze of obsession and literally abandoned all other hobbies just to write bc i loved the story so much lol. for atydsp especially that thing was like...my only hobby for half a year like i was not reading or watching tv or movies or playing video games etc bc the only thing i wanted 2 do in my free time was. write.

when i'm rewriting a story from another character's pov i usually have the ch of whatever i'm rewriting open next to word doc and just kinda go 2 town. i think it's much easier when you aren't having to do the heavy lifting when it comes to plot and are following an outline, bc obviously you aren't having to do much story planning urself--although for the later chs of atydsp where i sort of broke off from the og version + the chs where r + s are separated + i had to write new scenes for s i did have to spend more time planning, writing, editing, etc, but i didn't start posting the story until i'd already written the first 20 chs so. i had a pretty large buffer and that combined with the obsession combined with the shorter chapters + outline to follow is why i was able to post so frequently.

when i'm writing a new fic there's much more brainstorming involved bc obviously i am having 2 come up w a whole new plot!! but bc i'm only writing fic for fun i don't really take it too seriously and usually i just cobble together a couple of fun scenes or tropes that i like and then sort of...fill in the blanks? like if i'm like "ok i want to write a scene where x happens and then later a scene where y happens" i usually end up figuring out a plot/how to keep the story moving between those two scenes, rather than vice versa (having like...a coherent plot and then coming up with fun scenes that fit into it). like my current wip started as just a single idea of "ooh what if there was a werewolf fighting ring" and then it become a voldemort-won au bc i was like hmmm in what situation would r + s meet at a werewolf fighting ring...and then i decided it would eventually turn into a horcrux hunt bc i was like "ok if r + s grew up in a voldemort-won au...what would james be doing...." and now the story is continuing to change as i continue to have ideas of like "ooh what if i incorporated this trope" or "ooh this would be such a fun scene to write." like lily + james's entire dynamic in this fic basically grew out of an idea that i had for a single argument that i wanted to write lmao

anyway when it comes to actual writing process i usually go into a ch with just a vague outline of a few bullet points, and if i'm stuck on something i send a voicenote to my sister just like...talking through my thoughts + what i want to happen + usually by the end of the voicenote i'll have figured out what direction i wanna take things. or sometimes i'll ask her opinion (the ending i'm planning rn for atwmd changed completely after one such consultation...had an idea but then talked myself out of it but then my twin was like wait....i think that idea works better than what ur currently planning....and i was like damn maybe ur right....). so most of my planning + brainstorming is basically just me daydreaming + then talking 2 myself lmao.

when it comes to actual writing i'm pretty slow because i'm too much of a perfectionist and i need everything to sound right. immediately. like i have heard the advice so many times "just get something down on the page then go back and edit it later" but i am like. incapable of following it lol i will write a sentence and then read over it three times to decide if i like it before i move on. the plus side to this is that my chs usually need very little editing; i generally just read over them once or twice and make a few minor tweaks and i'm good to go!
